There are two historic protected buildings in the vicinity of the site. There are no indications that the proposed development area was occupied during the prehistoric periods. The fort was established in the later second century AD as a timber and earthwork feature, probably expanded in the mid to late third century and then rebuilt as a stone structure in the later third century. There area was occupied during the medieval period and this included the establishment of a church in the ninth century. Any proposed development has the potential to impact upon the archaeological resource (mainly the Roman for itself). Three park and ride sites are proposed on the perimeter of Durham city. There are no recorded archaeological remains within the site of Sniperley Farm but there is evidence of human activity in the medieval or post-medieval periods. The site at Carrville Interchange covers 2.8 ha and is generally arable land. It is bounded by the bank of a disused railway. The Carville interchange was considered low to moderate with moderate to high potential for post-medieval remains. The site at Howlands farm has a moderate to high potential for prehistoric and medieval remains. Other periods are considered to have a low to moderate risk. Archaeological Desk-based Assessment Claydon, M Durham : University of Durham, Archaeological Services, 2005, 22pp, figs, refs, CD An archaeological desk-based assessment was conducted in advance of a proposed development. There were no historic or statutorily protected buildings in the vicinity of the proposed development area. Buildings of 19th and 20th century date were present within the area, but these had limited archaeological merit. There were no indications that the proposed development area was occupied during the prehistoric or Romano-British periods. The proposed development area lay outside the focus of the medieval village of Winlaton and was probably agricultural land until at least the 18th century. During the post-medieval period the area remained largely undeveloped, although some of the buildings were recorded on the western part of the site from the late 18th century. 19th century buildings were present on the site of these earlier buildings. There was no known archaeological resource in the proposed development area. Landscaping and construction works during the 20th century had substantially truncated a significant proportion of the site. There were no recommendations for further archaeological work in relation to this development. [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 2005/18

Archaeological Assessment Stobbs, G Newcastle-upon-Tyne : Tyne & Wears Museum Archaeology Department, 2005, 62pp, colour pls, figs, refs An archaeological desk-based assessment was prepared to inform a proposal to redevelop land located at the western edge of Byker, part of the urban conurbation of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The area was once covered in mid 19th century housing and businesses, presently all removed except two individual buildings, one of which was the 'Cumberland Arms' public house. A row of 1960s maisonettes had also been recently removed. Two newly built commercial premises occupied part of the area, while the remainder was either landscaped or set aside for modern allotments. A piece of public art also stood within the study area. The northern extent of the study area lay within the corridor of Hadrian's Wall, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and for most of its course, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. However only a small area of the Wall in this area was Scheduled (although this designated area did not reflect the existence of a proven piece of Wall or one of its milecastles) and only part of that Scheduled Area lay within the study area. In addition to the presence of the World Heritage Site there was the potential for encountering prehistoric features and also evidence of early 19th century industrial activity, particularly the dumping of pottery kiln waste. Further the amenity character of one of the surviving buildings, the 'Cumberland Arms' public house, needed to be considered. The investigation revealed that the north and west sides of Old Eldon Square and the north side of Blackett Square had been extensively cellared and that the Newgate Street frontage appeared to have been relatively free from cellaring. The results suggested that there was very little chance that any deposits of archaeological significance survived within the footprint of the Old Elgon Square and Blackett Street frontages. The report recommended further watching brief work. [Au(abr)]

8 The area consisted of land within the corridor of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. However, this particular stretch was not Scheduled. A study of the map evidence suggested that the site of the proposed development remained as open land up until 1921 when a 'Picture Theatre' was erected upon the site. This was a rather ephemeral building, being constructed of timber on slight foundations, with a corrugated iron roof. There was, therefore, a strong possibility of encountering undisturbed archaeological remains within the area of the proposed development. Until reclamation and the creation of piers and breakwaters, the foreshore was subject to tidal inundation and storm damage and, after construction of Clifford's Fort in 1672, lay in the line of fire from the Fort's riverside battery. Consequently there were no recorded structures within the site until formation of the sea defences and Fish Quay at North Shields between c.1850 and c However, late 18th and early 19th century views of Clifford's Fort and North Shields have shown that between

9 the tides the foreshore was used for a variety of minor maritime and river related activities and some artefactual evidence for this industry over time may have survived. There may also have been evidence for the salt making industry, active in the area from at least the 16th century. The assessment concluded that the site had moderate potential for buried foreshore deposits, sealed by late 19th century reclamation, containing archaeological material from before c For the post-reclamation period the principal activities which may have left archaeological traces were the World Wars, when gun batteries and other military infrastructure were established on the reclaimed ground and the late 19th- 20th century lifeboat houses and slipways, a legacy of the first lifeboat establishment at North Shields in [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 2005/25 South Tyneside (B ) NZ {3B9ACE62-C873-41E1-AD8E-E } Parish: Jarrow Postal Code: NE32 3AL THE BEDE ALE HOUSE, PRIOR ROAD, JARROW Archaeological Assessment of The Bede Ale House, Prior Road, Jarrow Walsh, D Barnard Castle : Brigantia Archaeological Practice, 2005, 25pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Brigantia Archaeological Practice The archaeological significance of the site lay in its proximity to St. Paul's Church, the Anglo-Saxon monastery and cemetery (SAM 16) and medieval village (SAM 46). The site of the proposed residential development lay 300m to the west of the Roman Fort of Arberia at South Shields, which formed part of the Hadrian's Wall Military Zone World Heritage Site as designated by UNESCO in 1987 and also was classified as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The environs of the fort contained the remains of the surrounding Roman vicus, cemeteries and the unlocated site of a Roman Port. The site was open ground with an agricultural usage through the 18th century, however, the rapid development of this part of South Shields from the middle of the 19th century led to the construction of a school and housing on the site. In the mid-19th century a brickworks and associated clay pit were constructed in the south-western portion of the site. By the middle of the 20th century the majority of the site was occupied by a bus depot which remained in use until its closure in The development could affect archaeological evidence for the poorly understood remains of the Roman civilian settlement. It was possible that archaeological features had been disturbed by the later industrial, commercial and residential developments, however the extent of this disturbance was not fully understood. Therefore, it was the recommendation of the report that further archaeological evaluation of the site should take place to further assess the site. [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 2005/88

The site lay in an area of land between the historic villages of Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth, with both having well documented early medieval origins. The earliest evidence for activity on the site itself was for its use as agricultural land and gardens of a mansion house in the early eighteenth century. This house and land belonged to the Maude family, who were eminent members of the Quaker community in Sunderland from the late 17th century. The Maude Mansions and gardens were sold in 1843 or 1844 and the land was used to lay out West Sunniside and Sunninside Gardens. The gardens appeared to have been laid out as a private shrubbery for the residents of West Sunniside. Over the course of the late 19th century and early 20th century, development encroached on the shrubbery and the present form of the area was established. In that the proposals for groundwork were restricted and that there was no evidence for past use of the site other than as agricultural land or gardens, no further archaeological study of the area was recommended. Newcastle-upon-Tyne : The Archaeological Practice Ltd., 2005, 20pp, pls, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: The Archaeological Practice Ltd. Archaeological evaluation trenching was conducted as part of the planning process for a residential development. Two trenches were excavated to the depth of the subsoil within the site. In both trenches the investigation encountered linear cuts which probably originated as drainage features associated

12 with the modern use of the area as a garden and tennis courts or with it's earlier use as farmland. Artefactual finds were extremely sparse and restricted almost entirely to modern pottery and a single clay pipe stem within topsoil deposits. Trench 2 also provided a single sherd of medieval green-glazed pottery. None of these structural and artefactual discoveries amounted to remains of archaeological significance. It was concluded that the nature of remains found upon the site did not support a recommendation for further archaeological evaluation or mitigation work. A baseline cultural heritage assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. The main findings of the assessment were that while prehistoric and early medieval settlement at Morpeth was possible, there was no record of settlement there until the 11th century. The principal building on the site in the early 19th century was Orde House. There was no record of any industrial practices being carried out there until the establishment of a bottling plant in the early 20th century, but the possibility that such activities occurred there in the medieval or post-medieval periods could not be dismissed. Orde House was removed to make way for a garage complex in the late 1960s. A further archaeological evaluation as recommended. A baseline cultural heritage assessment was undertaken in a advance of a proposed residential development. The main findings of the assessment were that while prehistoric and early medieval settlement sites were well attested in the vicinity, particularly along the coast, there was no specific evidence for such within or in the immediate vicinity of the site. The first record of Whitburn dated from the 12th century, while the origins of the church, north-west of the assessment site, appeared from structural evidence to have been 13th century, but could have earlier.
