2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Joe Coleman Croatia on my mind I know, we haven t even left for the Erie Canal and here I am already talking about the next trip. I must be a glutton for punishment. Either that or my ADD, ADHD, OCC, ODD, etc., must be kicking in. As you may know, for the last couple of years Karen and I have been talking about our next big sailing trip, cruising off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. This trip has been contingent upon our grandson Josh s availability. He was serving our country in the Navy aboard the USS Nimitz when we took family trips to Italy and to Greece, and I promised him that we would not take another big trip without him and his wife Lisa. As of this July he will be stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, and they will join us on the Erie Canal trip. Now, as great as I believe the Erie Canal trip will be, it doesn t compare to traveling in Europe, and it appears that he will be here next summer to join us on the Croatia trip. So, in anticipation, I have already started planning. If you remember, we started thinking seriously about sailing in Greece about eighteen months prior to departure. I have found that a trip of this nature needs extra time - not only for planning but also for financing, as it is not cheap. As always, we are inviting sailing club members who might like to join us. We are looking at the week of July 4, As we did with the Greece trip, I have contacted the Moorings about chartering. If you remember, their Barbara Deatwyler came to one of our meetings from St. Petersburg to give us information about the trip and answer our questions. They were extremely helpful and assisted us the last time by providing transportation to and from the airport as well as recommending a fantastic hotel. The boats were first class and well-maintained and they even gave us a multi-boat discount. Once the Erie Canal trip is over and things settle down a bit, we will have a meeting for those who might be interested in joining us. A year may seem like a long time off, but believe it or not, they start filling those vacation times, so the quicker we meet, the better chance we have of getting the boats we want. In order to get the 10% discount, we need to charter a minimum of five (Continued on page 6) VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Musings Rick Hushla Hello all! I hope everyone is having a nice summer. Susan and I are sorry that we couldn t attend the Summer Sailstice cruise last weekend. According to Joe s report, it sounds like everyone had a great time. Susan, Park and I were at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas for a family reunion. If you think it is hot here, you need to go to Vegas for some perspective. It was 105 out there!!! I don t care what anyone says about dry heat is inferno hot! In spite of the heat, we had a great time with Susan s family, and the eleven pools at the resort helped to keep us cool, hydrated and happy. I must admit that I was caught unprepared for my contribution to this month s newsletter. I can t decide whether to blame it on the jet lag or perhaps I fried some brain cells in the Las Vegas heat. Fortunately, my talented wife is letting me borrow a sailing-related verse that she wrote a while back. When I close my eyes and think of my favorite things, I see a sailboat skipping along, draped in billowy canvas that pulls her across a stretch of twinkling turquoise water. I can feel her hull gracefully bowing to each gentle wave that comes to greet her, stirring up a curl of white froth at the place where they intersect. My ears hum with the monotonous sound of water rushing alongside the hull, broken only by the occasional rhythmic thump as she falls off the face of a wave and is caught by the sea below. The salty sea mist kisses my cheeks and, with a deep breath, fills my lungs. When I close my eyes again, she is anchored in a quiet, protected cove. I see tall, cavernous shelves rising straight up out of the water, iced with bits of green vegetation that cascade over the black rock like the long, unruly tendrils of a mermaid's hair. I can feel her tugging gently on her rode, while simultaneously rising and falling in the current as she playfully slaps each ripple with her stern. (Continued on page 6) Page 2

5 Cruising News Cocoa Village Fireworks July 4-5 Dave and Gail Cordial Don t forget the 4th of July gathering at the Cocoa Village Marina. See the ECSA website for details, or call Dave Cordial at , or him at davecordial@hotmail.com. Cruise to Captain Katanna s August 2-3 John and Loretta Schnitzius Our dinner cruise to Captain Katanna s will be on August 2-3, Captain Katanna s is at 4263 U.S. 1 in Melbourne, just north of Post Road and south of Pineda Causeway, and near marker 99 on the Indian River. We will gather at the restaurant at 5 p.m. and order from the menu. If any boaters are interested in gathering for breakfast on Sunday, August 3, the restaurant s deck will be available for use by ECSA. A sign-up sheet will be available at the July 9 meeting. Looking forward to seeing you there, John and Loretta Schnitzius Come Cruise With Us! Labor Day Cruise August 28 - September 1 John and Lynda Geraci The Labor day cruise is rapidly approaching and because it is a holiday weekend, reservations should be made quickly with the Fort Pierce city marina and Vero municipal marinas. The plans for the cruise are to sail down for an overnight in the anchorage south of the Sebastian inlet on Thursday. On Friday morning, sail the remainder of the distance to Fort Pierce city marina to spend Friday and Saturday at the marina. Meet at the Tiki bar for cocktails Friday at 5 p.m. and possibly dinner. The tradition on Saturday morning continues with breakfast at the farmer's market which is in full swing from 8 a.m. to noon; afterwards, join Karen for a Gelato run. Bring cocktails and appetizers to share by the north docks for our usual gathering on Saturday at 5 p.m., with dinner on your own. Leave Fort Pierce after breakfast at the Yellowtail restaurant in downtown on Sunday and head to Vero Municipal marina, which is within walking distance of Vero Beach restaurants and shops. Dinner plans to be discussed in the lounge at the marina. On Monday, after breakfast at the Lemon Tree, we board our boats and head to the home docks. John Geraci Summer Sailstice Review Joe Coleman The 4 th annual ECSA Summer Sailstice at Grills Riverside Melbourne was another great success. This year the club extended an invitation to other sailing clubs, organizations, marinas and sailors to join us there for the afternoon. The response was fantastic with five different organizations attending. There were members from the East Coast Sailing Association, Melbourne Yacht Club, Manatee Cove Marina, Eau Gallie Yacht Basin, and Sundance Marina. We also had one unaffiliated sailor who had heard of the event and decided to join us. It was our biggest (Continued on page 7) Page 5

6 COMMODORE S THOUGHTS Continued from page 2 boats at the same time. As in most charter companies, catamarans are taking over their fleet and there are not as many monohulls as there were before. I recommend having four to six people per boat. That will ease the cost of the charter, plus you will have good sailing companions to share in the fun and work. The restrictions are much tougher now and you must prove that you have at least an ASA 104 certification or above before you can bareboat. Just having extensive sailing experience will no longer work. This seems to be the trend now all over Europe. Karen and I hired a captain in Greece and found him to be a great guide without restricting us from doing whatever we wanted to do. We sailed when we wanted or laid back and did nothing but relax and lay in the sun when we felt like it, so I would recommend thinking about a captain for this trip. It would also be helpful if everyone took the same flight over and back. That way it will be easier to arrange ground transportation arrangements for the group in Croatia and keep that cost down. We would fly into the city of Split which is only about a half an hour from the Mooring base camp in Marina Agana. They do have hotels we could use in Agana or we could stay in Split. These are decisions we can make with the group that wants to go. I am not familiar with Croatia so am open to recommendations about which islands to visit. The Moorings has a suggested route which sounds really good. As with the prior trip, our focus will be on short days at sea so we have a longer time in the towns, and their itinerary fills that requirement. The first day we go from Agana to Maslinica which is only 7 NM away. The next day we head to Vis, then the towns of Komiza, St Clement Island, Hvar Island, Brac Island and then back to Agana. You can go to the Moorings website and see the full itinerary there. If you are interested in joining us, please me at odysseytraining@hotmail.com and be sure to look for more information in upcoming issues. LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Joe and Karen have booked a charter for the week of July 4, 2015, since availability in June was quite limited. Check with Joe for further details. I hear waves crashing on a distant shore and the song-birds practicing their falsettos under the cloak of the dense island foliage. The moist air is still and the unmistakable smell of fertile earth fills my nostrils. Most folks see only through their eyes. A blind man uses his mind to see. Artists see through both their eyes and mind. A writer sees things that can be seen by no other. Not only does he use both eyes and mind, but every other sense available, and then paints it with the colors of his own perception. We are both looking forward to the ECSA 4 th of July cruise at our home base/port of Cocoa Village Marina. Angel has been patiently waiting there in her slip in the East Basin. We may even dress her up a little for the occasion. It is nice that the 4 th falls on a Friday this year so we can all stay up late to watch the fireworks. See everyone at the 4 th of July cruise! Rick VICE COMMODORE VIEW Continued from page 2 New in the Ships Store Just in time for the summer sailing season: Men s ECSA Henley shirts Women s ECSA V-neck shirts Both will be priced at $15 and are expected to be available at the July general membership meeting. 7 SUMMER SAILSTICE 2014 (Continued from page 5) Summer Sailstice gathering so far, with eighty attendees and twenty-three boats at anchor. The events started under the tent at 1:00 p.m. with a sign-up and social gathering. At 3:00 p.m. Fr. Todd Schmidtetter was ferried through the anchorage as he blessed all of the boats there. The rest of the day was spent with good company, dodging the thunderstorm, and enjoying a great meal at Grills. On Sunday morning Bob Wiley, Ross Herbert and Wendy Miller joined those of us who had stayed overnight for breakfast on the restaurant deck. The award for best-decorated boat went to Bob and Linda Norway from the Manatee Cove Marina aboard Beowulf. For their efforts they were given a West Marine gift certificate. Although there was a strong showing from other organizations, the East Coast Sailing Association had the most attendees and boats at anchor, so we will be the first entry on the new Summer Sailstice plaque. I would like to thank Bob Wiley who suggested that we participate in this worldwide event, Page Proffitt for his organization and coordination with Grills, Father Todd Schmidtetter from the Church of the Holy Apostles in Satellite Beach for blessing the fleet, and the Grills restaurant management and employees who have supported us every year with great accommodations, service and food.
