2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Page Proffitt VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Rick Hushla Cruising Miami and Biscayne Bay and Stops Along the Way Claudia and I have been cruising a lot since April getting back just in time to make it up to the Memorial Day Cruise at Port Canaveral. Our trip this year was down to Miami and Biscayne Bay wanting to put emphasis on the trip and not the destination. Barring a couple of weather issues we did just that. We traveled shorter distances during the days, anchoring or docking early to enjoy the areas we were in. This was different to me since I usually raced to a location I was going to. Stopping in Vero, Peck Lake and Old Port Cove Marina, (North Lake Worth) the first three days were nice easy day trips to make. Arriving at Peck Lake early we were able to put the kayak in the water and take advantage of the beach on the Atlantic side only a few hundred yards away. If you are in need of a marina in West Palm I highly recommend the Old Port Cove Marina at the north end of Lake Worth. Go to Active Captain to see all the great amenities that Old Port Cove has to offer. We also anchored at Lake Boca Raton. I would suggest not doing this on a weekend since it gets crowded with crazy day boaters. Las Olas was a very good marina in Ft. Lauderdale offering lots of things to do and see. Our next anchorage was Oleta State Park in North Miami, a quiet, deep and well protected anchorage. Once we were in Miami we needed to go to the store so we stayed at Crandon Park Marina, run by the county. This was a nice 300-boat marina with no pump out for months I was told, (also no help in any other way). We did take the city bus to the Key Biscayne shopping center and were able to get fresh fruits and more. The next day we cruised the Miami River and the Venetian canals and homes around Miami ending the day in the Marine Stadium anchorage. I highly recommend this anchorage with its beautiful view of downtown Miami and the lights as the sun goes down. The last marina we stayed at was Miami Bayside Marina owned and run by the city. With prices double what we are used to and the facilities in poor shape it was a shame that Miami can do this. Unfortunately I found this the case the last time I was at Dinner Key Marina another city owned marina. Overall it was a great trip with many more good times than bad. For your next trip do your planning and use Active Captain ( to get up to date information about the anchorages and marinas you plan to stop at on your cruise. Page Muck Removal Starting in Brevard County in July Greetings everyone! We just got back from another fun Memorial Day weekend up at the Ocean Club in Port Canaveral. I have to give a big shout out to the Ocean Club. Even though we only had three slips reserved at the club (many of our members are in the Bahamas), the staff took great care of the club members that arrived by car, and they hosted a barbecue on Sunday night for about 25 of our members. Please keep them in mind if you re ever reserving a slip up at the port. It s a first class facility and they ve been very good to our club. Changing gears and following the theme of some of my previous articles on the state of the Indian River lagoon, I wanted to share an article I found on SpaceCoastDaily.com. BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA The Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office has received a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit to allow muck removal from the mouth of Turkey Creek. With this permit in hand, the Turkey Creek project will be the first muck removal funded by the Florida Legislature to benefit the Indian River Lagoon. The Lagoon is suffering from the cumulative impacts of more than a century of various types of pollution. There is no quick or simple solution. Sustainable lagoon restoration is possible but requires a multi-faceted approach that includes Reducing current sources of pollution, Removing old deposits of pollution, and Restoring the lagoon s natural filters. The specific actions we take to Reduce, Remove and Restore should be based on Research. Old pollution deposits can be removed by dredging out the muck. Due to the regional and national importance of this estuary, the County continues to seek financial assistance from outside Brevard County for dredging costs. After successfully obtaining the federal permit, the first muck dredging project is anticipated to begin in July at the mouth of Turkey Creek, funded by the Florida Legislature. Up to 240,000 cubic yards of muck will be removed, subject to available funding. Muck dredging in Cocoa Beach will begin a bit later, pending federal permits. Dave Netterstrom, Mayor of Cocoa Beach said, the City of Cocoa Beach is looking forward to partnering with Brevard County and the Florida Legislature to help the (Continued on page 3) Page 2

The city continues to work diligently toward acquiring the necessary federal permit. Additional funds are being sought through the state legislature to assure completion of the Turkey Creek project and also remove muck from other priority sites throughout the lagoon. As part of this restoration strategy, the removal of the legacy load (muck) is critical to overall success. Beyond the muck dredging efforts, Brevard County has also embarked on an aggressive restoration strategy for the lagoon to reduce excess nutrient inputs, restore the filtration system (oysters, clams and wetlands) and ensure that sound research is the basis of the effort. I ll be providing updates on the status of the lagoon as they become available. On a side note, please come join us for the 4 th of July cruise at Cocoa Village Marina. There s not a better place to watch the fireworks (and less crowded) and enjoy food and friends. Bob Wiley is providing more information in this newsletter. And lastly, for everyone staying overnight on their boats we will be getting together at Grills for breakfast around 8:30 am, (or whenever you get up). July 4 th Cruise to Cocoa Village for Fireworks Bob Wiley Join us for the annual cruise to Cocoa Village to observe the fireworks display over the Indian River. You can anchor out, rent a slip at Cocoa Village Marina or come by car. Your co-hosts are Rick and Susan Hushla and Bob Wiley. At dusk, we will adjourn to the main dock to set up our chairs to watch the fireworks. If you come by car, please park in the large lot in front of the clubhouse and not in the covered parking area. Please sign up at the June meeting or Rick (rhushla@hotmail.com) or Bob (rwiley1@cfl.rr.com) that you at planning to attend so there are sufficient supplies for everyone. Come Sail With Us! Memorial Day Cruise to Ocean Club (Port Canaveral) aka The Universe is Against Us Cruise Susan Hushla Sometimes things just don t go according to plan. If you are a boat owner, I am sure that you can relate. After last year s successful turnout and great weather, Rick and I were really looking forward to spending a few days aboard Angel at the lovely Ocean Club we even packed books to read. On Saturday morning we did our grocery shopping and arrived at the marina before noon to load up and head out. After getting everything into its proper place, we started the pre-departure check list. Canvas off, water tanks filled, systems inspected - check. Engine oil check; transmission oil check; electronics on check. Rick was up readying the helm when I opened up the bilge and said Houston, we re not going anywhere. There was water almost up to the floor boards. The V-drive was underwater salt water, that is. Our relaxing weekend plans were squarely on the back burner. We pumped out the bilge and sprayed all the wet parts down with lubricant. Upon confirming no additional water was coming in, we decided to figure out the cause/damage later and began putting together Plan B for the weekend cruise. We called the Ocean Club and told them not to hold our slip. We explained our dilemma to the staff and they were very understanding. They told us to go ahead and use their facility, host the event and have fun. That place is a class act. So we unpacked everything that we had just put on board in order to load it back into the car and take it up to the port. Several of our boats were in the Bahamas this year, Jennifer had transmission problems and others just had conflicts. Only two boats were able to make the trip: Miss Hannah and the Berry s on their new Island Packet 35 (I forgot her name!). The afternoon weather was just right for taking a dip in the pool and we ended up having a nice BBQ with about 12 members and their guests. We also picked up a couple of locals from the marina, and one from the marina next door and had a really enjoyable evening. Hospitality Thank you to Doug and Pamela Worth for volunteering to bring refreshments to the June membership meeting. Page 5
