Jean-Paul Sartre Commodore s Column by Steve Hall We kicked off the final quarter of our yacht club activities by returning back to the traditional winter schedule on October 1 of Wednesday and Friday evenings at the Wreck Room. Next up on the event calendar was the Cruiser s Wrap-up Party held on October 15 and hosted by Fleet Captain Lorry Gilbreath. Although Lorry will give you the particulars in her article elsewhere in the Jib Sheet, I will comment on what a really enjoyable party she staged for us. We had a great time visiting with our fellow cruisers and reminiscing about the 2014 cruises. We viewed a slide show of pictures reminding us of such things as the numerous cruise destinations, dock parties, and the fun had by John Weaver at the belly dancing lessons held in Sidney. Lorry and her husband, Bryan, both work full time and were unable to join us on the cruises. Despite that, Lorry has been a very active fleet captain working since the beginning of the year by arranging the March Cruise Directors meeting, assisting the cruise directors, and, most recently, by being the MC and organizer of the Cruiser s Wrap-up Party. The next event was the Open House/New Member event held October 22 at the Wreck Room. This fall tradition welcomed 67 PLYC members and 13 guests and was one fun party! The Wreck Room was decorated for autumn, the food was abundant and very good, and our members engaged the visitors in some lively conversation. Hopefully, in the coming months, we will be welcoming some of these guests as new members to our organization. On Friday, October 24, we bid farewell to Roy and Jean Kraft with a going away party. Roy and Jean are long-time members of our club and Roy served as the 2002 PLYC Commodore. We all wish them well as they relocate to Arizona. The Halloween costume party brought October to a close in great fashion. As the pictures elsewhere in the Jib Sheet will show, the 2014 Halloween party was a very popular and enjoyable event. As stated in the prior month s edition of the Jib Sheet, the November edition you are reading was delayed primarily so we could give the results of the November 8, Election of Officers/Business Meeting (and also because Jib Sheet producers Jamie and Liz have only just returned from Europe). Again this year, the office of sail captain remains vacant. At this meeting, I also had the pleasure of welcoming John and Katherine Simpson as new members of PLYC. See the New Members article for information about the Simpsons. The Election of Officers/Business Meeting was followed by the Yachtfellows Italian dinner, held at the Wreck Room. Deanne and her crew provided a fantastic follow up evening to the Bay Club event. Members were greeted near the door by our tuxedo attired Capo, Peter Joseph, and enjoyed the company of Frank Sinatra, in the form of music and a life sized cardboard cutout, inside. The Change of Watch, which will be held at the Bay Club on December 6, formally transitions PLYC leadership to the newly elected board. Tickets are on sale at the Bay Club along with menu and seating selection choices. Please plan to participate in our club s premiere event. In closing, I wish my friend and advisor, Olav Pedersen and his lovely wife Deanne, all the best as they take some time away from Port Ludlow to explore opportunities recently offered to them near their home town of New Orleans. Olav and Deanne have worked tirelessly this past year making improvements and staging some very enjoyable events at our Wreck Room. Rear Commodore s Column by Buddy Hills As we approach November, I am wondering, where has this year gone? The holiday season is upon us! In December, we will have our club s premier event, the Change of Watch Dinner and Dance. Sign up has started at the Bay Club and committees are busy preparing for this year s gala. This event could not be put on without all the volunteers who put together the decorations, invitations, programs, food, bars, and so much more. In my opinion, the work these volunteers do is spectacular and I know you all will enjoy all their hard work. This year s event will kick off at the Bay Club on December 6 in the club s Great Room. It will begin at 1700 with cocktails, delicious appetizers and socializing. We will then move into the auditorium for dinner and the program. The Belmont Hotel in Port Townsend is catering the meal this year and you have three entrées to choose from. After dinner and the program, a new band called The Tropics will provide entertainment. Please check out their web site ( This gala will be our 41 st Change of Watch and the theme of this year s event is Poseidon s Night Out. Please mark December 6 on your calendars and we hope to see you there. There are a number of other activities occurring: special events at the Wreck Room, the Women s Group season finale luncheon November 20 at Wing Point Golf & Country Club on Bainbridge Island, and the December cruise to Seattle. 3 Wreck Room Highlights by Deanne Pedersen, WR Social & Events Coordinator October was a busy month with appetizer nights, soup and game nights. The new member open house was a great success. It was really nice to visit with members we have not seen in a while. I hope you ll continue to visit the Wreck Room during the next couple of months. November jumped right in with the Election of Officers meeting and dinner where we had 76 people attend the Italian dinner after the meeting. A very good time was had by all! This month brings two great marine exchanges. Please check your s for weekly updates in the What s happening at the Wreck Room notices that I send out weekly. The flyers for both these events are listed. We, of course, will continue with our appetizer and pot luck events. I am currently looking for volunteers to help decorate the Wreck Room for the holidays and to take on the White Elephant Christmas Party. Please let me know if you are available. Fleet Captain s Column by Lorry Gilbreath We held our 2014 Cruise Wrap Party on October 15 where everyone enjoyed the company, great food, and sharing stories about our cruising adventures. Thanks to Kathy Kubesh, we also had a terrific video display of all your outstanding cruising photos. For our brain-storming session of lessons learned and what worked for 2014, this is what was shared: Keep the October cruise on the calendar, because everyone enjoyed it in prior years, and maybe a few members will volunteer in 2015; Short July cruise can be taken off the calendar for 2015; Dock party was really fun so add that again for 2015; Long weekend cruises would be welcomed for working members (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Saturday, Sunday and Monday) or incorporating weekends into a longer cruise fairly close to home; Cruise directors should consider days without activities, having land cruisers join in more frequently, and more anchoring; and cruise director theme ideas: Poulsbo Halloween Theme, Christmas in July, Daffodil Festival in Tacoma. After everyone enjoyed the Macho Nacho Bar and Sangria, I presented some fun awards with a bottle of wine. Here are the winners as voted for by members : 3

5 Welcome aboard! New Members! John and Katherine Simpson are retired from university life, John formerly a neuroscience professor and administrator at UCSF and the UW, and Katherine as an administrator at the UW. The Simpsons have two children and four grandchildren. John s spent a lifetime sailing everything from sunfish, lasers, and other small vessels to larger cruising sailboats with some racing crew experience. The last four years he and Katherine have sailed frequently. Their vessel, Aurora, is a 1979 Baba 35 moored in Port Ludlow. The Simpsons owned a vacation house in Port Ludlow from 1995 to 2003, and now have moved here full time living on Shine Road. 6 Poseidon s Night Out Change of Watch Dinner & Dance If you haven t signed up for PLYC s gala event of the year, you have until November 21! This year s Change of Watch Dinner and Dance will be held Saturday, December 6 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Bay Club. Prepare to be dazzled with Champagne, wine, and spirits bars before dinner with PLYC members circulating trays of mouthwatering appetizers... Shrimp filled with Smoked Salmon Mousse topped with French Trout Caviar, Assorted Stuffed Vegetables, and Crab, Bay Shrimp, Hibachi Beef Shooters and Crostini. Dinner follows with Calabrian Style Salad with Roma Tomatoes, Niçoise Olives, Salami, Mozzarella, Artichokes, and Garbanzo Beans with Balsamic Vinaigrette, your choice of Garlic Rosemary-Rubbed Prime Rib with Horseradish Sour Cream Sauce (medium-rare or well done), Baked Sockeye Salmon with Moroccan Preserved Lemon Aioli, or Vegetarian Baked Penne Pasta with Wild Mushrooms and Marinara. Swedish Potatoes and Asparagus accompany the beef or fish entrées. And dessert... Vanilla Bean and Crème Brulée Cheese Cake with Raspberry Sauce. Dinner is catered courtesy of The Belmont in Port Townsend. After dinner, we ll attend to business by introducing you to your new officers for 2015, and then passing the tiller from Commodore Steve Hall to incoming Commodore Buddy Hills. We ll then enjoy dancing to The Tropics, one of the Northwest s premier dance bands with music and vocals to please everyone! The cost is $63 per person payable by check to PLYC. When you sign up at the Bay Club you ll also be selecting your seats and dinner choices. 8 Board Highlights from October 1 Meeting 1 st Reading for John & Katherine Simpson, sponsored by Steve Hall & Buddy Hills, discussed and M/S/P. Treasurer BJ Luce reported Club assets of $251,261. Commodore Hall announced that he will be attending the Port Ludlow Neighborhood Event that welcomes new residents into the community. He will present PLYC information, including brochures and applications to the Club. After some discussion, the Board approved for Vice Commodore Olav Pedersen to cancel our contract with Wave, as the TV is rarely used. Port Captain Ramsay Smith has suggested using a form to collect statistical data from visiting boaters. He reiterated the Web site for boaters yachtdestination.org.
