Port Ludlow Yacht Club October 2013 JIB SHEET You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Commodore s Column by Brett Oemichen Commodores Cruise: Eighteen boats and 38 cruisers joined the Commodores Celebration Cruise September Our ports of call included destinations in the San Juans, Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands and we visited Butchart Gardens, Chemainus Dinner Theatre, the Ganges Market and Moran Mansion at Rosario. Our sincere thanks to Terri and Lanny Ross who met us in Ganges and hosted cocktails and a wonderful array of appetizers aboard their 82 Horizon yacht, Empress. Out of the nine days we were on the water between ports, we experienced fog, at times very dense, with visibilities as low as 100 yards on four days. Our congratulations to skippers and their mates for practicing excellent navigation and safety in these challenging conditions. Look for a full report by Anne Whipple elsewhere in this Jib Sheet. Nomination of Officers: We had a terrific time at the NOO convention on Friday, September 20. About 85 of our members attended and took part as delegates. Thanks to Sherry Robinson, Teresa Forrest and their NOO team who created a festive convention setting along with an incredibly delicious dinner. Congratulations to Kevin Ryan, to whom we awarded the Art Walker Excalibur trophy and our thanks to the nominees who have volunteered to serve as leaders of our club. Volunteers at PLYC: Speaking of volunteers, I d like to devote a few words in this month s column to some discussion about our on-going needs to expand the volunteer spirit for which our club is known. All of us can relate to the image of Uncle Sam beckoning us with the message, I want you. We ve used this image in the past to recruit volunteers with a somewhat less daunting message, We need you. It s true: your club needs you to help in many ways and all of them are a great way to have fun and get to know our fellow members better. Currently, about 32 percent of our members volunteer their time to various functions and activities at the Wreck Room, serving from one to as many as 30 times per year. We are extremely grateful to those members and thank them for serving our club. We d like to expand our cadre of volunteers to encourage more of our members to join in the fun. We have about 120 openings a year at the Wreck Room and need, on average, about 3.2 volunteers per event. This Coming Events The Wreck Room Friday, October 4, bring an appetizer to share. Beginning October 16, the WR will open every Wednesday and Friday evening. See the WR page on the web site for more details. Board Meeting- October 2, WR, 1500 Cruisers Wrap Party October 17, WR, 1700 Open House and New Member Event October 23, WR, 1700 C.S. Lewis
translates into a need of about 384 volunteer opportunities per year. Currently, about 93 of our 287 members have volunteered at least once during In order to staff our needs, that means each volunteer serves an average of about 4 times per year, ranging from once to as many as 30 times. Here s where I m going with all of these numbers: If we could encourage 30 more of our members (an increase to 43 percent of our members) to volunteer at least once per year, we could decrease the demand on our current volunteers from 4 times per year, on average, to 3 times per year. If we could grow our volunteer ranks to 50 percent of our members, a goal which is very attainable, 143 folks could share in our staffing needs by volunteering only about 2.5 times per year, on average. If you live in Port Ludlow, you have a busy life with a full calendar. But as you plan your schedule, please help us staff our club s needs by filling an opening at the Wreck Room, being a Cruise Director, serving as a Watch Captain on the docks during the reciprocal season or helping with one of our major club events. PLYC is well known for working together to make our club an organization that many want to be a part of. Please help us maintain that high standard by answering the call. Open House: PLYC will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday October 23 to provide us with an opportunity to invite and meet prospective new members to our club. Do you know someone who you think would be interested in joining PLYC? Please invite them to the Open House. Crossing the Bar: PLYC mourns the death of Bob Sexauer who passed away at his home, Tuesday, August 27. Bob was an avid sailor and he and his wife Barbara have been PLYC members since PLYC extends our condolences to Bob s family. Rear Commodore s Column by Steve Hall The 2013 Commodores Cruise and the Nomination of Officers dinner have passed and both were really fun events. Although the cruise was not without a few health, mechanical, and fog related glitches, the ports we visited and activities we enjoyed made this one of the most enjoyable cruises of the year for the crew of Lucky Two. Many of the activities on the cruise centered on our celebration of the PLYC start up in the 1970 s complete with many of the wonders of that time. We enjoyed 70 s music, chip and dip, fondue, tie-dyed shirts, peace sign jewelry, and many other symbols of the era that gave us the beginnings of PLYC. Special thanks to Karen Hills who, although having to leave the cruise early, made Game Night a fun event by providing us with her Pub Trivia game and some crazy, fun prizes. The Nomination of Officers held September 20 was very enjoyable with great food, dancing, and a commitment by some of our members to hold office so that the business of our club can be managed. Elsewhere in this edition you will see the slate of nominees who have agreed to hold office in An additional highlight at the Nomination of Officers event was the presentation of the Arthur Walker Excalibur award to Kevin Ryan in gratitude for his tireless efforts to make Port Ludlow a better place to live through his work with Rotary, PLYC, the Arts Council, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and as a math coach for third grade students at Chimacum elementary school. Kevin and Sue Ryan are friends to everyone but most importantly to the community. After the upcoming election of officers/business meeting, which will be a casual affair held at the Beach Club and Wreck Room in November, we will look forward to the PLYC premier event of the year. The 2013 Change of Watch dinner/dance is a semi-formal event and will be held December 14 at the Bay Club. At this gala, we will be continuing the celebration of PLYC s 40 th anniversary as a club. Ruby is associated with the celebration of a 40 th anniversary, just as silver is associated with a 25 th anniversary and gold with a 50 th anniversary, hence the Change of Watch for this very special year is dubbed the Ruby Red Rendezvous a Celebration of 40 Years. Please mark December 14 on your calendars for this event. 2
Immediate Past Commodore s Column by Harold Brunstad We just finished our successful Nomination of Officers event. Thanks to Sherry Robinson, Teresa Forrest, and the many helpers for making this event so much fun. The meat prepared by Chef Steve Shanklin was outstanding! Drinks were included along with music for dancing. You won t find a better value anywhere. Thanks to Buddy Hills, who agreed to change his nomination from fleet captain to rear commodore, we ended up with the following slate of officers for nomination: Commodore, Steve Hall Rear Commodore, Buddy Hills Treasurer, BJ Luce Fleet Captain, VACANT Property Officer, Judy Blair Vice Commodore, Olav Pedersen Secretary, Judy Perrotta JAG, John Lynch Port Captain, VACANT Once more in 2014 will have Jamie Bima and Liz Healy handling communication and Jib Sheet responsibilities along with assistance from Harlen Whitling as Webmaster. Social activities will be planned and coordinated by Deanne Pedersen. We have a great slate of nominees for the Election of Officers event on November 9 at the Beach Club. There is a good mix of experience along with newer members. As you can see, we are still searching for volunteers to be nominated for fleet captain and port captain. In addition, I have asked the sailing members of our club to suggest someone to represent their interests as sail captain. Please contact me at with suggestions for any of these positions. I would like to congratulate and thank those people who have volunteered to lead our Port Ludlow Yacht Club for Wreck Room Highlights By Peggy Kulm September is gone and fall is here. By the time you read this the WR will have hosted 2 Ladies golf groups, the annual PLYC Women's fund raiser event, said good bye to long time members Kevin and Sue Ryan and celebrated our September birthdays. October starts out slow and picks up speed in mid month beginning October 16th when we move to the fall schedule. The WR will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5-8 PM. Look for reminders when the change begins. Appetizers continue on Fridays. October 16 th brings a Pot Luck, October 23 rd, get ready for an open house/new member event and bring some friends who might be interested in joining. We end the month on October 30 th with a dinner, scotch taste and birthday celebration. So be sure to reserve your seat when you get an with the details. Our burgee program moves ahead at warp speed as we added 4 more burgees this month from Palm Beach Sailing Club, Port Madison YC, Three Tree YC in DesMoines, and Lady Smith Maritime Society. We passed the deck doorway and are moving toward the side entrance. As always, I end with thanks to our volunteers and a request to continue your support of the club by helping fill the staffing needs. Note our Commodore s article about the many opportunities for supporting our club and continuing need for volunteers at the Wreck Room. 3
Fleet Captain s Column by Olav Pedersen Hey, all you 2013 cruisers! Hey, all you boaters who are interested in joining us to see what cruising with the PLYC is all about! Make sure you save the date and join us at the Wreck Room on Thursday, October 17 at 5 p.m. for the Cruise Season Wrap Party. PLYC will provide the food. We ll have many photos to recap this past season while we look forward to cruising in s with details will follow, so please join us. Let s move on to the September Cruise. Here are a few samples of some of the more memorable statements made during the cruise. Fog? What fog!? What do you mean, the radar s broken!? Of course I didn t see that log in the water. I don t know why the engine won t start. What ship? I always trust my chart plotter. It s going how fast? I know exactly where I m going; I just can t see what s coming at me. Who s got an air conditioner? You really want to cut through that passage? This cruise had a bit of everything. Yes, we had fog. Okay, we had a lot of fog. We also visited new places and had some pleasant afternoons and evenings along with the usual good companionship of our fellow members. I ll leave it to Brett, Steve, and Harold to fill you in with the details. As fleet captain, I would just like to say what a pleasure it is to be associated with such a fine group of people on and off the water. Of course we have cruise directors giving it their all in order to make sure everything their months of planning come off smoothly. What clearly compliments their effort is the additional behind-the-scenes volunteering provided by the rest of our group. So to all of our members, I sincerely thank you for all you have contributed and continue to contribute to making these PYLC cruises a success. On a personal note, I would like to thank Bob and Jan Quick and Eos for buddy-boating with us on those thick foggy mornings and assisting us in getting Midnight Sun to her destinations safely. Yes, a new radar is now on MY radar! Don t forget to visit the Cruise Schedule section of our Web site at on a regular basis and check for updates. Sail Captain s Report by John Neesz On Saturday August 31 we held this year s Single Handed Race. Three boats started with their handicaps dictating their start times. John Little on Reality led the way on Reality followed by Frank Lawson on Rush and John Neesz on Nor wester. The conditions were perfect for the larger genoa on Nor wester allowing it to catch the other boats mid-race and lead the way home. The nimble and well sailed J/80 Rush finished a close second. The two Johns had their hands full all day tacking and grinding in their big genoas. On September 19 Bananas failed in its attempt to keep the lead near the finish when keta found a better breeze on the right hand side of the course. Bananas maneuvering behind two Kenmore Air float planes preparing to take off did not find enough prop wash to finish ahead. As of the writing of this column (September 23) the Etchells fleet with one sailing day remaining had completed four races of the fall series. keta again is in the series lead with 5 points to Bananas 10 and Ramblin Rose s 12. Women s Group November Luncheon Hold the Date! The PLYC Women s Group is planning its annual end of the year luncheon at Wing Point Golf & Country Club on Thursday, November 21. We re also planning a trip to the new Bainbridge Island Museum of Art afterwards. Details will be forthcoming via so stay tuned, but do hold this day to join your PLYC friends at two wonderful events! 4
MARINE EXCHANGE NEEDS YOU! Kevin Ryan and Peter Joseph founded the Marine Exchange program, which has been held the last Friday of the month, September through April, at the Wreck Room for the past couple of years. Kevin, as you know, will be moving soon and Peter has decided to retire from Marine Exchange. We need a new leader to continue this valuable educational program for our members. There is a huge variety of interesting topics and potential speakers to tap, which makes this a fun and rewarding activity greatly enjoyed by all club members. One idea is to evolve our current Training Day effort into more of an on-going schedule that would look more like Marine Exchange. We welcome your ideas! Thanks again to Kevin and Peter for founding Marine Exchange. Commodores Cruise Celebrating 40 Years! by Anne Whipple The Commodore s Celebration Cruise found much to celebrate during our 12 days of cruising! We began gathering on September 5 in Roche Harbor, sharing tales of fog, lightening and whale sightings. We celebrated anniversaries with a Champagne toast, specifically the PLYC 40 th and Commodore Brett and Sue s 37 th, with honorable mention and more Champagne for the Whipple s 47 th, the Taylor s 43 rd and the Bima s 25 th. On Friday, the 6 th, more cruisers arrived, once again braving fog, rain and lightning. The commodores, past, present and incoming, provided a delicious BBQ Pork dinner in Celebration of PLYC s 40 th year. On Saturday, PLYC cruisers celebrated Cruising starting with crossing from Roche Harbor to Sidney B.C. in dense fog and drizzly rain dodging container ships, the ferry Chelan and testing our navigational skills. The sun gloriously appeared, as if on cue, when all PLYC cruisers were safely docked. Our second day in Sidney, celebrating Safe Boating began with a Dock Talk Session discussing the various methods our cruisers preferred for planning their cruises around tides and currents. A little weather insight was added by Past Commodore Harold Brunstad. That evening, we gathered for a 1970 s style Pizza Party and trivia games, complete with directors in afros, tie-dye and peace symbols. Monday, the 9 th, dawned with bright sunshine and calm seas for our cruise to Brentwood Bay, also a two day stay. What better place than Butchart Gardens and Todd Inlet to celebrate nature and natural beauty. Wednesday, the 11 th, our warm weather still holding, we cruised the short distance to Genoa Bay. Following a lazy afternoon spent finding cool, shady spots to relax and socialize, we celebrated Our Fellow Cruisers with dinner at the ever popular Genoa Bay Café. Cruisers got an early start the next morning to clear Sansum Narrows near slack water, making their way to the Ladysmith Maritime Society Marina. Settled in the welcome shade of the marina s large tent, we celebrated Music & Memories with 70 s music, lots of good humored memories and another great meal provided by our cruise directors topped off by an incredible chocolate fondue for dessert! Yum! And the music we made on Kazoos! Hmmm. Our stretch of incredibly nice weather brought the inevitable fog the next morning as we prepared to cruise to Chemainus. Brett and Sue became our scouting party, heading to Chemainus early to send back visibility reports. Happily, fog was light and all cruisers were landed in time to explore this charming little town. That evening, we celebrated The Arts at Chemainus Dinner Theatre with dinner and the opening night performance of the thought provoking play, A Pretty Girl. Saturday, the 14 th, began with fog for our celebration of Fall. Our faithful scouts, the Oemichens, once again headed out to help us find our way safely in Ganges. While in Ganges, our cruisers were treated to a lovely cocktail party aboard Empress. Our gracious hosts, Terri and Lanny Ross, with their guests, John and Sharon Lynch, and Hana Buresova, and their captain, Ron Garcia, made us all feel very welcome. Sunday morning, light and lifting fog in Ganges gave us all hope for an easy trip back to the USA and our next destination, Rosario Resort on Orcas Island. Fog thickened to very low visibility just out of Ganges and, once again, the weather kept us vigilant as we dodged B.C. ferries in Swanson Channel and freighters 5
on Haro Strait to make our way into the San Juans. Once into the San Juans, we exchanged the fog for rain, gusty winds, and a little lightning. Rosario Resort provided welcome shelter and the history of the beautiful mansion and grounds reminded us that on this day, we were celebrating Our Heritage. For this last night of the cruise, we enjoyed the Happy Hour at the mansion s lounge and cheered the Seahawk/49er game shown on their big screen TVs. Monday the 16th, the weather joined our celebration of Our Great Cruise as PLYC boaters headed back to Port Ludlow with good visibility and very calm seas. Kudos to our past, present, and incoming commodores and their wives who planned and executed a wonderful cruise. Commodores Cruise-September 2013 Champagne to celebrate a cumulative 170 plus years of marriage, but who s counting?? Peace and love and Pizza in Sydney BC There is never a shortage of reasons to CELEBRATE with good friends, good food and a good ( okay decent) bottle of wine. 7 Nomination of Officers: A Red, White & Blue Convention! by Teresa Forrest & Sherry Robinson On September 20, the Bay Club was all dressed up in red, white and blue. It wasn t a late Fourth of July celebration, but a good, old fashioned nominating convention of delegates selected to choose the leadership of PLYC for We had 87 delegates attend the 40 th annual Nomination of Officers event, which was held in true convention style a la 1950s-1960s with period convention decorations, menu and dance music. The evening began with appetizers, highballs and wine and was followed by a dinner of marinated tri-tip, roasted potatoes, corn and apple or cherry pie ala mode for dessert. During dinner, Commodore Brett Oemichen introduced our newest members, Ken and Judy Blair, and gave the attendees a short history of the Excalibur Award which was then awarded to a very deserving Kevin Ryan. Kevin and Sue will be leaving at the end of the month for their new home in Santa Barbara. Following dinner, Brett handed the mike over to our hard working nominating committee chair, Immediate Past Commodore Harold Brunstad, to introduce the newly nominated board members for Harold did a great impression of a frustrated nominating officer as he sat in his convention headquarters office on stage. After dessert, music from the 50's and 60's was played for the pleasure of the members. It s time for vigorous applause for everyone who worked hard to produce this great event. Without this group of hard workers, we would not have had such a fine evening: Chairs: Sherry Robinson & Teresa Forrest; Chef/Music: Steve Shanklin; Bartenders: Jerry Purdy, Jerry Wetherbee, Jake Jacobssen, Gale Kulm, Kevin Ryan, Terry & Shelley O Brien, Daniel Land; Greeters & Photos: Kathy Kubesh & Judy Blair; Appetizer Hosts: Aleksandra Okonski, Kathleen Shelley, Glenda Wetherbee, Linda Aho & Joanne Racki; Decorations/Setup: Shelly O Brien, Diane Purdy, Connie Wilkinson & Monica Brown; Dinner Helpers: Kay Cathcart & Sherry Robinson; Food Prep/Kitchen Cleanup: Deanne Pedersen, Judy Newell, Milt & Kathleen Taylor, Olav Pedersen; and Event Cleanup: Mike Blair, Jim Milner, Brett Oemichen, Steve Shanklin, Diane Purdy, Deanne Pedersen, Glenda Wetherbee, Celeste Archambault, & Sherry Robinson. Thanks again to our committee and to everyone who attended! Port Captain Wade Crouch provided an update on the Watch Captain Program. WRC Peggy Kulm reported WR plans for September and October and shared WR statistics through July of this year (assembled by Vic Draper). The board discussed the WR statistics and noted the difficulty in finding WR volunteers and supervisors.
