1 of st Year Camper Parent s Guide

2 of 14 Dear Campers and Parents, Welcome to Camp Josepho! We are thrilled by be offering our first year of First Year Boy Scout Resident Camp. Your son has likely just bridged over to Boy Scouts from Webelos, and he will have to get used to the addihonal responsibility and adventure that comes with being a Boy Scout. This program is an excihng new way to propel boys into their Boy Scout career with a running start. This program provides an easy transihon into leaving home for Boy Scout Summer Camp without the long distance and preparahon that may be too much for a newly bridged Boy Scout by focusing on Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class Advancement requirements that would be difficult to get in another senng. Scouts will also work on the Swimming Merit Badge, an important pre- requisite for many other AquaHcs Merit Badges. Use this as a primary camp or as a supplemental camp to prepare your First Year Scouts for Summer Camp later in the year. This guide should answer your queshons about what to bring, how the program works, and your camp schedule. This camp is not like a tradihonal Boy Scout summer camp, where Scouts arend as a troop and parhcipate in all their achvihes as a unit. Rather, we hope that this will be a targeted First Year experience that will set your son up for success as a New Boy Scout, no marer what troop he has joined. Use this as an orientahon to our camp experience to prepare your son for his week at camp mentally, physically, and administrahvely. You will find here links to the BSA Medical Form, which you should print up and bring with you to camp on the first day, as well as Special Diet form, which you can submit electronically, Talent release form, and the Permission to Shoot Form. Please take the Hme to make sure that each form is filled out completely and correctly to be submired during check- in on the first day of camp so that we will not have to spend addihonal Hme securing signatures. If you have any queshons, please do not hesitate to call Travis Barnes at x181. See you at camp! Sincerely, Trav! Barnes and J.P. Sco# Camp Director and Program Director

3 of 14 Getting To Camp Driving Camp Josepho is located at 3000 RusHc Canyon Rd, Pacific Palisades, CA From Sunset Boulevard, turn north on Capri Drive. You will get to a round- about. Take it around unhl you find Capri Drive again, it will be a near straight conhnuahon. Stay on Capri Drive unhl the end and turn le^ onto Casale Road. Casale will curve around the hill and turn into a dirt road. Josepho s main road into camp is considered a Fire Road and is open to hikers and bikers, as well as the normal flow of traffic. Most areas of the road are one- lane and this makes driving safely extremely important. THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE ROAD IS 5MPH. Please, be aware of the other traffic on the roads and we suggest carpooling to limit the number of vehicles coming into camp. When confronhng another vehicle going the opposite direchon, be advised there are narrow shoulders to allow the cars to pass but take your Hme. We will arempt to limit this difficulty by assigning Hmes to enter and exit camp, so please enter during the assigned enter Hmes and wait to leave unhl the assigned exit Hme to reduce congeshon. The enter ;mes are from 12:00pm- 12:45pm enter and 1:00pm exit for the June 24th- June 28th session and 8:00am- 8:45am enter and 9:00am exit for the June 30th- July 3rd session. Please refer to your session schedules included in this packet. Parking The Front Gate requires a numerical code to allow access. This code will be given at the June pre- camp leader s meehng and another reminder will be sent shortly before arriving to camp. Be sure to give this code to any drivers with your Troop who will be arending. In accordance with BSA policy and safety regulahons, PERSONAL VEHICLES ARE NEVER PERMITTED IN CAMP BEYOND THE DESIGNATED PARKING AREA. However, a handicap accessible pass will be provided upon request at the clerk staff desk. The parking lot is clearly marked and just inside the camp entrance. Be sure to always follow the instruchons given at camp while parking and back- in your vehicle to comply with the fire code. Only emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to park outside of the designated parking area and all others will be immediately towed. The camp staff will help haul gear to your campsite upon arrival to camp. This policy is for the safety of all campers. Please make sure parents who might be visihng camp during the week are aware of this important policy. We appreciate your cooperahon in parking only in designated areas. Check- In Procedures Our friendly staff will greet you as you arrive in the parking lot and assist you with the check- in procedures. Check- in begins at 1:00pm and 8:00am on the first day of camp depending on the session anended. Please refer to your session schedule included in this document. Assemble your Troop/group

4 of 14 at the parade grounds. Please refrain from moving your gear to your campsite unhl advised by the check- in staff. One adult leader in charge should proceed to the Admin Area to submit the needed forms and any payments due. Any late arrivals should park in the parking lot and walk to the lodge for check- in and a camp ID bracelet. When checking in you should have the following items: Annual Health & Medical Form (parts A, B and C) Talent Release Form Parental Firearms Permission and Release (Parts A, B, C and D) At Camp Provisional Scou;ng The Boy Scout Programs at Camp Josepho are unlike a tradihonal summer camp in that we are not organized by troop. Scouts are welcome to arend as patrols, groups of friends, or on their own. They will be divided into crews for their projects, but we would like anyone who is interested in arending these programs to feel welcome to arend. Uniforms Scouts should wear the official Field (Class A) Scout uniform during all evening flag ceremonies and dinner. Scouts are encouraged to wear a Troop T- Shirt or Camp Josepho Shirt during the remainder of the day, but they are free to wear whatever is comfortable and neat. No open- toed shoes are allowed in camp with the excephon of the pool area. Smoking and Alcohol Camp Josepho is a non- smoking facility. Smoking or tobacco use in front of any camper, leader, or staff member is strictly prohibited. Alcoholic beverages are never permired on any Boy Scout property. Please help the camp enforce these rules by making sure all leaders and parents in your Troop are aware of this policy. Homesickness While most boys find themselves too busy with the fun and adventure of camp, homesickness can be a reality for Scouts who are new to the outdoors and unfamiliar with being away from home. We encourage every boy who experience homesickness to stay at camp, as overcoming homesickness o^en results in a strong sense of pride and achievement.

5 of 14 We have found that one of the strongest proponents of homesickness is the cell phone. Even though cell phones do not usually work at camp, Leaders are strongly discouraged from allowing boys to use cell phones to call home. When a boy sees another boy calling, he will usually feel the need to call home himself. Parents should talk to their sons before he comes to camp about his feelings about leaving home, and make a plan on how to handle homesickness. Emergency Procedures An air- horn system can be heard throughout camp to alert campers and staff of an emergency. Each camping area has an air- horn hanging near the entrance for emergency use by adults only. In the case of an emergency, staff is trained to respond only to the Camp Director, or in his absence, his designee. The enhre camp will parhcipate in an emergency drill and learn what to do in the case of a fire, earthquake, or other emergency. We ask that each adult leader knows where the air horn is in case of an emergency and to adhere only to the instruchons given by the camp staff. If there is an injury that is not life threatening, do not call 911 unless given instruchon by the Camp Director. The emergency telephone number at Camp Josepho is (310) This phone is staffed during program hours. Boys can make emergency outgoing calls when accompanied by one of their adult leaders. Please note that cell phones do not generally work while in camp. Cabins, facili;es and special ac;vi;es: All Scouts and leaders will be in cabins next to or in the second level of the Malibu Lodge. Be sure to bring a sleeping bag or sheets and a pillow as you will be sleeping dormitory style in bunks with a provided marress. There are restrooms and showering facilihes at the pool house and Lodge that will be available for youth to shower during posted Hmes only. There are restrooms available in the lodge as well as portable toilets throughout camp. We are happy to accommodate any special needs as they arise. What to Bring to Camp PLEASE BRING: Annual Health & Medical Form Personal medicahons Flashlight Sleeping Bag Sleeping Pad Tent (check with your Den/Pack leadership) Pillow Towel Day pack (backpack)

6 of 14 Personal toiletries Boots/shoes (suitable for hiking) Raincoat or poncho (you never know) Clothing including uniform (Field uniforms for flag ceremonies and meals) Jacket/warmer clothing Swimsuit Laundry bag Pocketknife (Scouts must have earned their WhiRlin Chit to carry a pocketknife) Compass LEADERS ALSO BRING: Handbooks and advancement guides A watch Clothesline and pins Song and skit books RECOMMENDED ITEMS (Not Required): Sunscreen Bug repellant Canteen or water borle Fanny pack or uhlity belt Sunglasses Hat with visor Spending money for the Trading Post Frisbee, football or other equipment Swimming Merit Badge Book PROHIBITED IN CAMP: Personal radio, ipod, Walkman, PSP, Nintendo DS, or other such electronic devices Televisions Firearms or bows Alcoholic beverages Fireworks Sheath knives or knives with a blade over four inches Liquid fuel Please note. In accordance with local fire regula;ons, no campfires in the sleeping areas will be permined. The staff will provide a campfire program in our amphitheater on the first night. Cell phones are discouraged for youth.

7 of 14 Pre- Camp Administration Medical Form All campers and adults staying overnight must bring a completed Annual Health and Medical Form to camp. Note Parts A, B & C are required and must be signed annually by a cerhfied health- care provider. Make a copy of all medical forms for future use. A parent or guardian must sign all Scouts Health and Medical Forms and be dated within a year prior to camp. Prescrip;on and non- prescrip;on medica;on: MedicaHons, prescriphons and non- prescriphons brought to camp by campers and leaders are REQUIRED to be secured and locked in the Camp s Health Lodge, although a day s dosage may be carried by the adult accompanying the Scout. This may seem too strict for over the counter medicahon; however, if a child consumes medicahon that is not meant for them, it has deadly potenhal. There will be certain excephons for life saving medicahons to be carried at camp (ie. emergency inhaler or epinephrine pen) This decision will be made during the medical exam given by our health officers. MedicaHons will be available for distribuhon following each meal or at other Hmes arranged with the health officer. MEDICATION MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER and contain the following informahon: 1. Camper s Name 4. Date Prescribed 2. Name of Prescribing Physician 5. Name of MedicaHon 3. PrescripHon Number 6. DirecHons for Use We have a qualified medical staff that is on duty at all Hmes. A re- check of your medical form is required for all campers on the first day of Summer Camp. Special Diet Form Please only submit this form if you have a special food allergy or dietary need. Regular eaters need not submit. Please know which session you are registered to arend before subminng. Youth Protec;on The protechon and privacy of our campers is taken very seriously at Camp Josepho. All adult leaders and camp staff must follow BSA Youth ProtecHon guidelines. Bathroom facilihes are marked to denote separate youth and adult facilihes. Youth should not enter the adult facilihes and adult should not enter youth facilihes. Similarly, youth may not bunk in the same tent or cabin as an adult unless the adult is their parent or guardian. You may take Youth ProtecHon online at or by checking out the DVD from the Anna Ruggieri Service Center.

8 of 14 Visitors, Late Arrivals and Early Release All campers, parents, and leaders arriving at camp at some Hme other than check- in must register at the Camp Office or with a staff member and get a camp ID bracelet. It is also important that any leader being replaced checks out. We must know who is in camp at all Hmes. Everyone in camp will be given an ID bracelet to be worn at all Hmes. All visitors must sign in and sign out with a camp staff member and get a camp ID bracelet. Any visitor who has not registered may be asked to leave camp. It is important for safety that we know who is visihng our camp and when. Visitors who intend to eat a meal at camp must purchase a meal Hcket at the Camp Office. Meal rates are as follows: Breakfast - $5; Lunch - $6; Dinner - $7. While we encourage every boy to experience Summer Camp in its enhrety, any child that needs to be released early must have an Early Release Form (found in Part B of the Medical Form) filed at the beginning of camp. If there is to be an emergency release then a parent or guardian must be the person picking up the child and must show a picture ID. Any emergency release should be made known to the Camp Director as soon as possible and before the youth leaves the camp.
