2 SEAFOOD FESTIVAL The sixth annual Seafood Festival was a success in spite of the weather. 7 AM Saturday, August 3; decision to go ahead with the festival or cancel. With the hope of the weather improving, we decided to go ahead as many events could be held indoors; ie. food booths, beer tent, crafts, etc. The weather did not co-operate; the people did (approx. 500 people showed up during the day) not only from the Southwest Arm but other areas of the province including our MHA, Mr. Piercy Barrett. A great big thank you is extended to all who braved the weather to help make the festival a success. Most of the events went ahead as planned, the only major cancellation was the Search & Rescue helicopter; it did not leave Gander due to weather conditions. We would like to thank all the volunteers who helped make the day a success, especially the many people outside the Association who helped. We would also like to thank all the businesses in the Arm and the Clarenville area who donated goods o~ gave money to the festival. Deserving honorable mention was Corporal Cyr and Pax the RCMP' dog who put off an excellent demonstration. This was their fourth festival. Everybody enjoyed the event; the band had to play indoors in the afternoon and according to the response; it was a great success. Everybody enjoyed the dance later in the evening which was held at the Exotic lounge. The kids especially liked MOJO the clown. Harold Smith, Hillview, won the camera we had on tickets. From the looks of it, the festival was one of the best ever and we are looking forward to better things next year.

3 ASSOCIATION NEWS Although the Board did not meet during the summer, we,have still been busy. The Seafood Festival took up a lot of time and Marjorie, along with her committee of Calvin Gosse, Rowena Gosse, Janice Short,and Russell Avery should really be commended on a job well done. Of course it could not have been successful without the help of all the volunteers. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all who helped and to the people who came along to enjoy the day. We are still awaiting a reply re our tourism study and hope to have something positive soon. We are activaly involved with the other Associations on the Bonavista'Peninsula, especially with the Cabot SOOth Anniversary Committee. We will have much more to say about this Committee in another issue. Our co-ordinator attended a 3-dayconference on Innovative Community Development at Charlottetown, P.E.I. in June. This conference was funded by Enterprise Nf. & Lab. A copy of the report can be had by visiting the office. We have applied theough Crown Lands for a parcel of land on the new intersection to route 204 (south side of the arm) to build a craft shop. We hope to hear something in the near future about progress on this project. ' Our next, meeting is scheduled for, September 10 at which time we will,be giving 10-yea~ service pins to Chester Vey, Hillview;, Gilbe~t King, 9t. Jone'sWithin; Yvonne Churchill, Hodge's Cove; and Nelson Soper, Northwest Brook. Some people have expressed an interest in joining the Association; feel free to attend this meeting. We have been getting encouraging reports regarding our newsletter. We plan to continue publishing as long as there is a good response. 4 HILLVIEW On September 28 the UCW will be having a take-out cold plate. Members will be distributing the cold plates to many of the communities in the Arm. On July 25 Mrs. Louie Avery celebrated her 92 birthday. LITTLE HEART'S EASE On July 27 a party was held at the Exotic Lounge to celebrate the 90th birthday of Mrs. Sarah Chaulk, a former resident of Little Heart's Ease. This was a combination birthday party and family reuni~n. The family would like to thank the U.C.W. for catering and all who attended the event. Out of town guests were from Grand Falls, British Columbia, Ontario and U.S.A. ~ The Hatchet Cove-St. Jone's Within Recreation Commissions held their annual Invitational Softball Tournament Aug 9, 10, & 11. This is the annual fund raiser for the Commissions and was a great success with 15 teams taking part. The Commissions would like to thank everyone who helped make the tournament a success. i ~ ~ ~! 5 THE MAIL BOAT.... I am sure a lot of people in the Arm can remember "The Mail Boat", that use to travel the Arm during Spring and Fall. The mail boat would leave Hillview and travel to Queen's Cove, Long Beach, across to Hatchet Cove then to St. Jone's Within, then back across the Arm again to Hodge's Cove and all the way down to Southport, dropping off the mail along the way. On the return trip it would stop in these same communities and pick up the outgoing mail. Years ago when there were no roads in the Arm the weekly trip of the Mail Boat was a special event. Many people in the community would be on the wharf to meet the boat and see who was on board. The ~ail Boat also doubled as a passenger boat for anyone who wanted to use it. This gave people the opportunity for short visits with friends and relatives or a chance to shop in different stores. My memories of the.mail Boat was during the period Mr. David Benson from Hillyiew did the run. Dav~ started the run in 1939 and continued until He made the trip weekly from April until December~ (Monday was mailday). His first stop after leaving Hil+view was Queen's Cove and then on to the various communities stopping finally at Southport. From Southport.he took the mail.on his back and walked to Gooseberry Cove; ~e waited there for two hours for the return mail. He then made the return trip stopping at each place to pick up the return mail. He used a 33 ft. wooden bqat named the venetta P. Benson built by Mr. Hezekiah Miller from St. Jone's Within. The boat was powered by a double cyltnder 10 ~p. Acadia gas engine. You will see printed here a certificate of Registery issued by Customs for the boat he first used as a mail boat.. Mr. Levi Smith from Southport ran the Mail Boat from appr?x to 1937 or.38; other.operators of the mail boat were Mr. Baxter Gosse from Queen's Cove, Mr. Andrew Butt, Queen's Cove and Mr. Ken Vey, Hillview. 8 ST. JaNE'S WITHIN On July 27 & 28 there was a pee wee softball tournament played during Clarenville Day. Five teams entered. St. Jone's Within won winning every game they played.
