3 AUGUST Aug. 2-6 Canoe-Camping Trip in the Adirondacks Dave LeRoy Thurs.- Mon Due to popular demand, Dave LeRoy is planning a 4-day canoe-camping t r i p in the Adirondack Fulton Chain of lakes. Starting at Old Forge, New York, the trip w i l l average 10 miles of flatwater canoeing each day and we w i l l camp in leantoes and tents along the way. As in most canoe trips, short pleasant portages or "carries" are included at no extra charge. Itinerary: Thurs. Aug. 2 Fri. Aug. 3 p.m. - drive to Old Forge, New York and spend the night at the Pine Knoll Motel. Early risers w i l l spot cars at the far end of the route and others w i l l prepare to launch our Armada from the beach at the Pine Knoll. We w i l l paddle through Forge Pond, First, Second and Third Lakes, and into Fourth Lake, for a total distance of 6 miles. We w i l l spend the night on Alger Island in Fourth Lake. Sat. Aug. 4 We w i l l paddle to the head of Fourth Lake, traverse a shady passage into Fifth Lake and carry (.7 miles) to Sixth Lake. Then we pass under a bridge into Seventh Lake and camp on its north shore. Total distance for the day w i l l be 10 miles, including the carry. Sun. Aug. 5 - We w i l l canoe to the head of Seventh Lake and follow 4 narrow channel to Eighth Lake. The last part of this channel is too shallow for paddling, so we will wade through pulling our -.anoes behind us. After a swim at the beach on Eighth Lake, we w i l l paddle to the far end of that lake and portage (1.1 miles) to the Brown's Tract Inlet to Raquette Lake. This is a beautiful portage leading to A meandering stream, lined with water-lilies ind hyacinths. I t leads to Raquette Lake Village, where one may purchase food and drink. A 4.5 mile paddle on Raquette Lake w i l l take us to Tioga Point where we w i l l camp for the night. Total distance for the day w i l l be 11.5 miles, including the carry. Mon. Aug. 6 Canoe to Golden Beach on Raquettr- Lake, a distance of about 5 miles where our cars will be waiting. Anyone able to paddle 10 or 12 miles in a day and who has some camping experience will be right at home on this trip. Yo ; w i l l be asked to plan and cook one evening meal or 3 simple breakfasts along with a couple of other persons. Lots of help in meal planning will be available. Lunches will be on your own. The cost of this fun-filled expedition to the North Woods is only 330. This is to cover the cost of the motel Thursday night, camping fees and miscellaneous expenses. Lunches, food for the meal you will prepare, gas money, meals enroute and any canoe rental costs are on your own. Logistics and cooking require that the trip be limited to 12 persons (6 canoes) and it is possible that spaces will go quickly. A $15 deposit will hold your place until July 1, at which time the remaining $15 is due. Mail your money to Kick 'N Gliders, Box 7054, Mechanicsburg, PA Call Dave at with any questions you may have.
