1 MAY 2018 *Our AGM is on 19 June and elections to e Committee will take place en. Nomination forms will be sent out later is mon to all members* Reports on April Events Monly Coffee Morning and Talk Robert Wood gave a brealess talk on Gemstones and Crystals, full of e history and folklore on e use of stones in healing. Mah Jongg A very successful taster session in April has resulted in more an enough interest to re-launch e group. Join us on 11 and 25 May at 4pm at NSCR. Long Walk- Kimberley On 24 April, a large group of 10 Park walkers explored e area sou of Kimberley wi our guest leader, Gerry Hargreaves. Gerry was an excellent guide and we learned a great deal about a part of Notts at few of us had visited before. We enjoyed views over ree counties from Crich in Derbyshire down to Ratcliffe-on-Soar and e hills of Leicestershire in e sou (see photo). In Cossall village we found out about links to D.H.Lawrence and e Battle of Waterloo. The rain arrived during our lunch at The Mulberry Tree Cafe, Strelley Hall, but is did not dampen our spirits. Our sincere anks go to Gerry for his hard work in researching and planning e walk, and we look forward to joining him again later in e year. Andrew Martin Fine Dining Group - Hambleton Hall Sixteen Fine Dining members spent a wonderful morning, baed in sunshine, at Hambleton Bakery in Rutland wi e bonus of Tim Hart himself as our own personal tour guide. We very much enjoyed meeting award winning baker Julian Carter (who has previously worked for John Major at No 10). We en went on for drinks on The Terrace at Hambleton Hall followed by a wonderful lunch in The Study. A truly memorable day. Organiser - Christine Brooke
2 Note: The next outing, in June, is planned to be to Fischer s at Baslow on 14 June. Local History Group Our April session was a planning meeting for e next six mons outings. Suggestions came ick and fast and a programme was quickly compiled. Our next meeting is on 11 May and will be a tour of e Lace Market. Anyone who wants to come should meet outside e Castle Main Gate at Harvey Goodman, who is a qualified tour guide, is giving us a free tour because we re U3A, we re wor it and is a friend! Oer planned meetings are: June 8 Newstead Abbey 13 July Upton Clock Museum 10 August Melbourne Hall 14 September Wollaton Hall 12 October William Boo Museum May 2018 Events Monly Meeting - 10am 15 May Jean Townsend promises a warts and all account of The Real Queen Moer on 15 May at e Squash Club. Pop along at 10am for coffee and biscuits, and hear e bits The Crown didn t mention at 10.30am. Photography Group Inspired by a recent lecture on Victorian photographers, e photography group is embarking on a project emed to at era. Please feel free to bring along any genuine Victorian photographs. Using current technology, we will attempt to produce pictures in e same style. The next meeting is on 21 st May at 2.00pm at NSRC (due to Bank Holiday on 7) Gardening Group The Community Garden is looking a little sad after e winter, and e deluge wi Severn Trent s finest. It would be good to try to get it back to its former glory in time for e Royal Wedding festivities. Wi at in mind, e gardening group will convene at e Garden each afternoon from 2 nd May at 2pm. Contributions of (non-edible) plants would be most welcome.
3 Book Club Next meeting is 4 May at 3.45pm to discuss Edna O Brien s book The Little Red Chairs. The June book will be The Song of e Stork by Stephen Collisha Short Walk Our May walk is to Bestwood Country Park (4 miles). Advance Notice - Change of date for Short Walk in June:, 5 June In June, e Short Walks group will be led on a tour of e Notts Wildlife Trust Skylarks Nature Reserve, Holme Pierrepont, by Francis Reeson. Francis has been a volunteer at e reserve for four years and has an intimate knowledge of e plant and animal life ere. This walk will take place on, 5 June, a week earlier an our usual scheduled walk. Please put e date in your diaries. Andrew Martin German Group After a short hiatus e group will reconvene on 18 May, 4pm at NSRC. New Group! Steve Payne is interested in setting up a Film Group for like-minded cineastes. If interested contact him to discuss at spayne144@yahoo.co.uk Seasonal Poem: New Mown Grass An unmistakable prickling in my nostrils draws me back to my be-suited, baggy-jacketed, faer who is mowing e lawn, as apple and pear tree blossom dusts his shoulders. A blackbird sings in is warm, still, peaceful, humming world of gentle garden sounds - a buzzing insect, a cat being called, anoer distant mower, a ball bouncing. Released after a long winter and slow spring, basking in my faer s companionable safety, I know it s perfect but not why. For a second I am pierced wi a longing to be nine years old again.
