Photography The Group welcomes individuals of all abilities and meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Café Unity, in Heald Green. We discuss and try and resolve each other s photographic problems as well as receiving talks on various photographic issues. We also have a monthly field trip to take photographs as a group within the Greater Manchester area, to improve our photographic talents and to put into practice techniques we have learned at the monthly meetings. Each member posts a number of their photos taken on field trips on Facebook page U3ACH Photo Club; for all to see and comment. Please feel free to visit the page and view our efforts on previous trips. Contact : Neil Rackham. Looking Back On the 31 st October members visited The Heald Green Mosque. The visit was arranged by Chris Read. 31 members attended and we where given a most interesting and informative talk about Islam and the culture of Islam with a video presentation. There followed a question and answer session. Our members asked some very pertinent questions which were answered very honestly by the Imam. The visit finished with a light lunch and everyone agreed that the visit had been an excellent way to promote an understanding of different faith. Report by Joan Maddocks.

5 The visit to Tatton Park on Thursday 30 th November included a lunch at the Gardeners Cottage followed by a tour of the House in which was a series of tableaux featuring the Twelve Days of Christmas and explaining their Biblical significance.. The pictures show members tucking in to the lunch and gathered under the Christmas tree prior to the tour. Technology for Everyone Group Meeting 5 th December 2017 Jon Leigh gave a talk on the Narnia Project. Jon, an expert on railway braking and his friends Andy and Nick with similar engineering and also cycling skills saw a speed record for a wooden bicycle and thought that they would like to attack and break this record. Andy was recovering from a catastrophic motorcycle accident and Jon s wife had died from motor neurone disease. So this was to keep them creatively busy and sane and hopefully raise some money for MND Association. The rules were 3 engineers, only wood and wood adhesives allowed, speed measured over 50 metres flat etc. Jon showed the bike and described how they had chosen the woods for different bits and the designs for the chain (simple box type), the wheels (thin plywood made into shallow cones, glued into a rim), the frame 2 pieces of plywood, the saddle basketwork and the forks broomsticks. This accounts for the Narnia name for the project as many bits came from a mahogany wardrobe so they then put a lion head stencil on it. The record stands at 11.5 mph. Their first effort was 5 mph before the chain broke but a later attempt has reached 9.5 mph and they have exhibited the bike at various cycle meets, fairs and exhibitions to raise money for MNDA. Report by Betty Mandl.
