6 Looking Back Local Amateur Theatre It is not often I feel I should make any comment about any of the local amateur theatre productions that we visit during the year. A lot, of course, depends on the play but the production of Come Blow your Horn by Neil Simon during October should be commended. The cast did it proud. They all knew their lines and their performances were excellent. Well done Cheadle Hulme Players! Anne Webster. Pneumatic Conveying - A presentation by Roger Burgess on the 6th November 2018 From this descriptive yet breath-taking title, a goodly audience enjoyed an interesting journey through a technical subject on the ability to send materials from A to B by sucking and blowing. These materials varied from conveying Golf Balls, Contact Lenses, Tea and Coffee, Pills and Potions and, of course, cement and aggregates. Another application was conveying cash. This invoked an immediate audience response for those of us who remembered the Co-Op with their vacuum cash system of yesteryear. The system was officially described as a Capsule Conveyor. It was also noted that an earlier system using a form of zip wire was used. The documents and cash were zapped across the store using a catapult style mechanism. In those early times high tech solutions were not available, just a strong right arm! With great humour, Roger described the start of their business, by solving the cash evaporation problems of the Mersey Tunnel payment area brought about (it is rumoured) by the interesting skills of the local population. We now know that certain products require a Chopper Upper to convey things gently, that Rice Krispies demand the Dilute System of conveyance and how James Dyson has cleverly developed his carpet cleaners by using the Cyclone separation system used in the Pneumatic industry for years. Roger Law eloquently opened the meeting and introduced our speaker, and Derek Moffitt elegantly closed it by giving him thanks on our behalf. Peter Hobson Me and My Girl Last October Pat Vermes organised a trip to the Plaza Theatre in Stockport for a number members to see the comedy musical "Me and my girl". The cast of the Stockport Operatic Society was large and included some good singers and dancers. Sets and costumes were superb and the songs "Doin the Lambeth walk" and "the Sun has got his hat on" were well performed. The Lambeth walk when the Cockney couple Bill and Sally taught the "nobs" the song and dance routine was particularly jolly! The musical is set in the 1930's - a rags to riches story where Bill, the unrefined barrow boy from Lambeth, eventually inherits the title Earl of Hereford, the country pile and estate. At first Bill refuses the inheritance if he has to give up the Cockney Sally; however Sally becomes more ladylike so Bill becomes an Earl and marries Sally! A pleasant afternoon of entertaining escapism! Thanks to Pat for organising another musical outing. Peggy Dutton
7 Strollers 1 on Wednesday 14th November Eight of us started at the March Hare, Cheadle Hulme and enjoyed a 2 mile stroll along the Micker Brook as far as Demmings Road, Cheadle and back. The newly metalled track followed the brook and passed through groves of trees in autumn colour. To finish the stroll we ate from a set menu in the March Hare and relaxed in convivial surroundings. Thursday Early Evening Diners on 15th November A group of 14 dined at the Alma Lodge Hotel in Davenport, where a substantial meal from the set menu was selected. The theme was 'Italian'. After an enjoyable meal and convivial company we departed, having already found volunteers to organise some meals in The Learning Aspect is based on finding and testing a suitable eatery, organising a meal and collecting and counting the payments, where appropriate. We usually pay for food, tea and coffee on a 'Tab', on a cash basis, and pay for bar drinks separately to simplify and speed up payments.help and advice is available from the Coordinator Walter FitzPatrick if required. The group was initially set up by Chris. Reed about 16 years ago and is still going strong. Scent Experience - A presentation by Florentina Anghel, Managing Director and Sales Manager, Aroma Prime Aromas by Design on 4th December The 20-year-old Aroma Prime company has two UK manufacturing facilities situated in the Rochdale area. Florentina told us about the company's aromas, claiming that they bring magical and immersive experiences to amusement parks, museums, hotels and many other widely differing public attractions. So it is important that the scents are evocative as well as safe for everyone. From lavender to wood-smoke, none of the 400 Aroma Prime scents cause allergic reaction but being synthetic the scents cannot be used on the skin. We are born with the closely related senses of taste and smell and the brain's Limbic system plays a major roll in controlling our moods, behaviour and emotions. Smell is the first sense humans develop. It impacts every part of our lives healthy memory, emotion, taste and time. Our brain makes association with smells the right nostril recognising the good smells and the left nostril the not so good. Smell regulates taste and, although closely related, if either the sense of taste or smell is lost the other will still function. Finally, after smelling a few sample pads of the product, we were reminded by the pad smeared with mulled wine that Christmas was a coming. We were also very happy to learn that peppermint boosts the brain, chocolate improves memory, cinnamon increases attention, and vanilla inspires happiness. Barbara and John Anderton
8 Visit to Shugborough Hall. Friday December 7th On a grey, windy December morning 20 intrepid travellers set off for Shugborough Hall. On arrival, in sunshine, we walked or took a buggy through the parkland with some members taking in the farm on the way to the Mansion. First call was the tea-room then, suitably fortified, the Hall. The display in the Mansion reflected the achievements of two brothers: Thomas and George Anson, great grandsons of William Anson who bought the estate in George Anson joined the navy at the age of fourteen and rose to become First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1740 he embarked on a four year voyage to circumnavigate the globe, during which he captured a Spanish treasure ship and brought home a large fortune and a vast collection of mementos which are fittingly displayed on wooden crates in various rooms. George s treasure enabled Thomas to improve and run the estate where he was an enlightened landlord with an interest in developing agricultural practices. Thomas also travelled, though nearer to home, throughout England and Europe and to Egypt. Thomas was a patron of the arts and a prime mover in founding the Royal Academy which acquired a large collection of sculptures, paintings and books. Unfortunately most of his collection was sold at auction in 1842 to pay off debts incurred by his profligate descendant the first Earl of Lichfield. The Mansion tour ended with a small display of the photographic work of Patrick Lichfield. After the tour of the Mansion we were able to visit the extensive servants working areas in which we were only too aware of the onerous nature of their labours. A brisk walk across the park brought us to the coach at the end of a delightful and instructive visit. We thank Pat for organising this early Christmas outing. Hilary Lightfoot.
