2 PAGE 2 ARABIAN KNIGHTS AUGUST 2017 Potentate s Message Dear Ladies and Nobles: As I am preparing this article, I will be leaving shortly to Imperial for the annual session. Many important issues will be discussed and I will provide a full report to the membership at the fall business meeting. I would like to thank our clubs and units who sponsored the many events we have held so far and especially the very hard working nobles, spouses, and friends who supported them. Because few members are active, the burden falls on the few, and without your support, we simply could not function. You know who you are. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Our parading units to include the Tall Shriners, the EKS Clowns, Motorcycles, Minicars, Fire Brigade, and others I may not be aware of are very active and leading the charge for our temple. You are our best PR agents and we appreciate the time and effort you put into these activities. Also, I can t forget the hard working sales staff who sold out all of the onions in a short period of time. And, the same for the hard-working paper salesman who always support us and never let us down. We don t thank any of you enough but know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. We recently held our first comedy club at Circus Park. This event was chaired by our 1st Ceremonial Master, Jeff Downing, and his wife Laura. This hardworking couple were also responsible for our receiving a national first place award for the best website in the Shrine. More info to follow on this. And, many thanks to our recorder, Clarence Meyer, for his efforts on writing a strong application to support leading to this award. The comedy club was a great success considering it was organized in a short time-frame and scheduled over the holiday weekend. The plan is to continue with the comedy club fund raisers every 90 days, alternating between Clio and Saginaw. Our next event will be hosted by our Chief Rabban, John Berry, in Saginaw on Friday, September 29th at 7PM. We need maximum support for this show. See Betty for tickets. Cost is $10 per person in advance and $15 at the door. This will be a family show. Very cheap entertainment for the price so please support your Shrine activities. The next one will be held in Circus Park in early December. Stay tuned for the details on that. We are continuing to spruce up our properties with new signs and awnings in Saginaw and the Oriental Band is remodeling the covered bridge at CP. The horseshoe area park north of CP building is also a work in progress to turn this into a nice area to support a few over night campers or motor homes during those times when our workers stay for weekend events. Oasis Shrine Club continues to work on the donated fire truck to make it show worthy as well. There are two upcoming trips sponsored by the Shrine. The first is Shriner s Day at the Detroit Tigers baseball game on Sunday, August 20th. This event is supported by all Shrine Temples in the area and we are expecting a great outing. Just a few seats left if you haven t registered. In addition, we were finally able to schedule our trip to Noah s Ark in Williamstown, Kentucky, on October The Ark is a complete reproduction, size and shape, as the one mentioned in the Bible. It is gigantic with three floors, over 200,000 square feet of exhibits. Trip includes travel, some meals, snacks on the bus, one night in a local hotel, Ark Adventure and Creation Museum attached. Lady Sandy and myself will be hosting this event. Cost is about $350 per person. See Betty for details and tickets. Expect this one to fill up fast. Also, don t forget our Family Picnic at CP on August 27th, and our gun show in September in Saginaw. As always, the Shrine experience is what you want to make it. If you are not active, you are missing some great events and we are missing you. (And, of course, your money) Robert L. 5 AUGUST 2017 ARABIAN KNIGHTS PAGE 5 WHITE PINE SHRINE CLUB Pictured left are Jim Herzog, left, and Norm Storms, PP, right, selling papers in Au Gres on June 8th. Jim has been our Paper, (and onion and parade), Chairman for many successful years, and Norm, who summers in Au Gres, is a regular in our paper drive. Consistent dedication to the Shrine principles and goals is very rewarding and key to the successful provision of care for the children in need of orthopedic and burn injury restoration. Thanks to all our members and volunteers who step in repeatedly to help the great Shrine Hospitals. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated! God bless all of you! Our August 10th meeting is our annual steak fry appreciation dinner at Tawas Bay Beach Resort in East Tawas at 6 PM in the outdoor pavilion. This is always the social highlight of our year! You need a reservation for this meeting to reserve your steak. Other entrees can be ordered at the dinner if desired. Contact me at , rdt2000@centurytel.net for details. Bring your friends to Shrine in 2017! Bob Thacker, scribe LEGION OF HONOR Greeting Nobles and fellow Vets, Hopefully you are enjoying your summer and have been attending the many Shrine events which have been occurring this summer that Pote Bob and our Divan have worked exceptionally hard to provide for us. They are not done yet but have many more enjoyable events planned for the Nobility, their families and friends in the near future. A lot of hard work goes into planning, organizing, and working these events and all they ask in return is your attendance to make these events successful. As for the Legion, we have started ordering shirts and other paraphernalia to make us one of the sharpest clubs in our Shrine Center. I have made arrangements with an embroiderer to do our shirts at an unbelievable price. This will be finalized at our next meeting. I will also post the patterns on our website. So hang in there Brother Vets and those who support our armed forces. Remember, although structured for veterans, the Legion also welcomes those who support our men and women in uniform Our meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at Circus Park, 7p. Come on out and join us for and evening of comradery and war stories. We would like some input from the members concerning possibly having some dinner meetings with our ladies. We do need their support. So until we meet again, remember, we got your six. Chuck Frisby - Divan Rep. - Legion of Honor BREAKFAST CLUB Nobles there is a group of Shriners that meet at the Liberty Restaurant on Pierson Rd. in Flushing on Tuesdays at 7:30 for breakfast. The good thing there are no dues you just have to pay for your own breakfast. So Stop on out have a good meal and visit with your brothers and nobles. See you soon. -Dan Helmer

15 AUGUST 2017 ARABIAN KNIGHTS PAGE 15 Dear Noble, Monday Membership Message The 2017 Imperial Session is in the books, and Shriners International saw some great advancements with regard to its membership program! During his Pageant, Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske announced a call to action, asking ALL Shriners to take a stand against the declining membership in our fraternity, referring friends, family members and coworkers for further contact, education and information about Shriners International and Freemasonry. Imperial Sir Bergenske set a lofty goal of 12,000 new creations across all of Shrinedom between now and the 2018 Imperial Session. Now the work begins! Are YOU committed to membership? Attached HERE is a membership resolution for your nobility to consider and adopt, stating that you have committed to this goal and will take a stand to promote our fraternity in the coming year! Also attached (HERE) is a spreadsheet spotlighting all temples membership performance over the last five (5) years. This includes their highest level of creations during that time period, as well as their projected creations when considering a 2% and 2 ½% increase. If all temples were to strive to match their highest number of creations, the vast majority of the goal will have been attained. If all temples achieve a 2 ½% increase, Imperial Sir Bergenske s goal will have been surpassed! It s not beyond reach! Every Shriner needs to do their part by referring their friends at beashrinernow.com/referral Happy Monday! Have a great week!
