3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hey folks, hope all are well, staying warm and enduring this unruly winter we have had so far. And by that I mean, having to wear long pants instead of shorts and maybe a spring jacket instead of a t-shirt. Is it really February? From a guy who loves snowmobiling this has been an awful winter. To most others I talk to, it has been glorious! If I can t have snow, then can I at least have more daylight? We have only used the 1946 Ford Marmon Harrington 4x4 dump truck to plow once, a measly 10 in Andover that I m pretty sure melted as fast as it came. We had a nice meeting at Harold s shop in January, seeing some good friends and meeting new friends. Many things were discussed at the last meeting as you ll see in the minutes but I want to drive home the point that we have the potential at our fingertips for some serious club growth with a little bit of effort. As the schedule of events comes out in this newsletter along with events from other clubs, people are starting to mark their calendars with events they will plan to attend. Showing some club participation in some of the local car shows, truck shows, and other events for like-minded individuals will help to get our name out. I am working on the social media side which has passed the 255 followers mark. If a few members want to get together and go to an event, let me know and we will set you up with some newsletters, magazines, and other propaganda to help get our name out there. Cruise nights are great for that as well. If you can t attend an event but feel it has great potential for meeting people, let us know and we ll find someone to attend for sure! Speaking of events, before we know it our own truck show will be upon us. Sadly, I will be unable to attend this year. It will be the first time I have missed a show in a long time. I would change my prior engagement, except that my engagement to my fiancé would likely become null and void. Courtney and I will be on our honeymoon during that day so I m hoping someone can send me pictures long distance. Our Brooklyn Show has been a great event for many years, long before I was here and I have full faith in our team that this year will be no different. That said, if you have any ideas or suggestions, let us know as we always strive to improve. Most importantly, if we have any connections at the weather station to influence the weather, you need to stand up now. Please and Thank you! Next meeting will be at Pfahl s Mack and Antique Truck Restoration in Bethlehem, CT which was a big hit last year. I highly recommend that you all attend to see the beautiful work that is accomplished there. Take a look at the May- June newsletter from last year for some good pictures. Also, bring a few bucks as we are now going to be running a 50/50 raffle at each meeting. You buy a raffle ticket and the winning number gets half the pot and the club gets the other half. There is no obligation to buy, just a fun and friendly way to fund-raise a few bucks to support the club. That s all for now, see you in March! -Jonathan Yeomans Directions to March 13, 2016 Meeting at Pfahl s Antique Truck Restoration located at 73 East Street, Route 132 in Bethlehem, CT ( ) Members are asked to bring a snack or dessert to share with fellow members. Matt will provide the rest including beverages. Take a scenic drive to Bethlehem, check your map or GPS to get directions from your home. Consider car-pooling with a fellow Chapter member or guest. Come early to see antique trucks and buses being restored and look at Matt s memorabilia. Wear your 4 x 4 boots as the bone yard out back could be muddy. Here is a suggested route: I-84 West to Exit 17. At first traffic light, take Right on to Route 63 North. Continue thru Watertown Center and follow Route 63 for approximately 8 miles. Turn Left on Route 132 (Bethlehem/ Judd Farm Road.) You will see 2 Entering Bethlehem signs. Watch for Bethlehem Elementary School on the Left. Pfahl s Restoration (Green sign) will be on the Right. Red Building behind house at 73 East Street. 3

Nutmeg Chapter History Jon is looking for help in identifying trucks and people in pictures from the Club archives. These are vintage vehicles that have a story and discussion may help to chronicle these pictures and trucks. Use stiffer poster paper for the smaller posters d. Include the web address and Facebook address e. Create a Square for android and smart phone users on the poster f. Upload the poster to the web page in a PDF format so that members can print their own posters g. Distribution should start now, not in June h. Facebook page should have the date of June 26, 2016 for the Brooklyn Truck Show (free advertising) i. Get the date of the Brooklyn Show on the ATHS Schedule in a timely fashion. ATHS will accept this information after the Annual Report is submitted. OTHER BUSINESS 1. Don presented a framed photograph of the original 1982 signing of the Nutmeg Chapter Club Charter. Motion: A motion was made and seconded Have a 50/50 drawing at every meeting. That would be six times a year, beginning with the March 13, 2016 meeting. ACTION: By a show of hands, fifteen members voted in favor of the 50/50 Raffle, eight members were opposed. Jon will pick up raffle tickets at Wal-Mart. He spoke of the meetings that began twenty years ago and how Foskett Equipment began hosting the January meetings after the passing of Roger Gardner. He then told the membership about another recent inheritance. Bernice West recently bequeathed Bob West s metal chairs that had seated the chapter members at the West s garage and picnic grove for every May and September meeting so graciously hosted by Bob and Bernice. 2. Jonathan shared a bit of history that he recently learned. It has to do with Mike Pietraroia who has artistically given us the Mystery Trucks in the Newsletter as well as the sketches of the featured truck of the Brooklyn Show. Mike is a long-time Nutmeg Chapter member who had a career at Combustion Engineering. Through work associations, Jon has heard high praise for Mike s technical talent with mechanical drawings that provide such intricate detail. Mike is highly respected in his field and praised for having such a rare skill set. His reputation has earned him renown at Combustion Engineering, now under the dome of General Electric, the company where Jonathan is employed. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, Betty Jay Secretary 5

15 Eugene Wochomurka, Nutmeg Chapter Member From Movin Out Dec 2015 Issue Eugene Carl Wochomurka, 86, of Tolland, beloved husband of 29 years and best friend of Shirley (Tluck) (Turek) Wochomurka, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Woodlake at Tolland with his family by his side. Born on December 27, 1929, in Rockville, CT, son of the late Edward and Louise (Kimmel) Wochomurka, he grew up on the family farm in Tolland. After attending Howell Cheney Technical School, he honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Gene worked for many years for John Limberger Construction (Ellington), Stephen D. Williams & Co. (Tolland), and other local contractors as a heavy equipment operator. He was also an honorary volunteer fireman with the Tolland Fire Department, and he was a member of the American Truck Historical Society and the ATHS Nutmeg Chapter for many years, for which he proudly displayed a treasured 1939 Ford dump truck. Eugene took immense pride in his home and gardens. He enjoyed working on his trucks, rebuilding old tractors, and cutting fireplace wood using the saw-rig that he had built. He enjoyed traveling and listening to Country Western and German music. His greatest pleasures were being surrounded by family and friends to whom he would rattle off hundreds of jokes. Gene s gifts to us were his timeless optimism, his loyal and lifelong friendships, and his true dedication as a father and husband. Besides his devoted wife Shirley, he leaves his daughter Cheryl Looke (Stephen) of Broad Brook and his grandson Fred Yates IV, of Boston, MA. He is also survived by his step-daughter Karin Turek and step-sons Karl Turek of Manchester and Dr. Paul (Ashley) of Beverly Hills, CA and their children. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Clough (Warren) of PA Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home in Rockville, CT, with burial at East Cemetery in Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tolland Fire Department, P.O. Box 827, Tolland, CT DUES Editor s Note: Thanks to Elizabeth Robertson for notifying us of the death of Eugene. Do you have a ( - ) on your mailing label? If so, this means that according to membership records $5 is still owed for the 2016 membership year, due to increase in dues. Thank you! 15
