1 The il Leak July 2016 Volume 53 Issue 7 We are still looking for an editor for the newsletter President's Message Touring season is here and it sure is nice to see the Model A s out and about. Although, I must say that the Ice Cream tour I led the other night should have been called a Frostbite Ice Cream Tour, boy was it cold. Poor Mike Doyle was shivering so much he almost couldn t eat his ice cream. And speaking of crazy weather, I want to first thank all the members who drove their Model A s to the club meeting at Concord Park. The residents did enjoy the Model A s and some loved the opportunity to have a ride. BUT the weather soon decided it was time to rain on our parade. The skies opened up with heavy rain and lightning. Fortunately we had just finished the meeting and the Model A s took off for home. As far as I know everyone made it home safely. There are a number of tours coming up in the following weeks, see the list of tours on page 5, and I hope you will be able to participate in all or some of these. One tour you might be interested in attending is a display organized by Gary Hoyt at the Natick Senior Center on Thursday June 16, from 9 - Noon. The Senior center is located at 117 East Main Street. Many of us have just returned from the weekend tour to Manchester, VT. This year everything was free, but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate this weekend. This show has been conducted for years by the local Chamber of Commerce, but that organization went bankrupt and the entire event this year was covered by the shows major sponsor, Dorr Oil Company. We have heard the Don Dorr plans to hold the show next year, and I sure hope the weather is better. As I write this issue of my message, Nan and I are enroute to Loveland, CO for the MAFCA National Convention. We enjoy attending these events and look forward to meeting friends we have made from around the country and world. In fact we like these events so much we will also be attending the MARC National Convention the following week in Toledo, OH. We had hoped to be (Continued on page 2) 1

I think Nan likes the idea of having A/C. Just a reminder that plans for the New England Meet are progressing and we will soon be passing a sign up sheet for help. We have been getting good response for our request for raffle donations, but we can still use more. See Nan or me at a meeting if you would like to make a donation. One final note, I will still be on the road for the July meeting which will be hosted by John and Shirley Jacobson; Tom Zappala will be conducting the meeting in my absence. Looking forward to seeing you down the road. Doug Linden Wellesley College Parade Thanks to Tom Zappala and Art Callan for venturing out in the rain to chauffer some of the ladies of the Class of 1941 at the Wellesley College reunion festivities. Art says the ladies were in their early 90 s and sharp as tacks. According to Art he was told that when they were attending Wellesley the tuition was only $50/ semester. I m sure it s a little more than that now. 2

3 Secretary s Report Minutes of the Minuteman Model A Ford Club June 7, 2016 Location: Concord Park Senior Housing, West Concord, MA. The meeting was held at Concord Park in West Concord. After a time for the residents to view and ride in our Model A s the meeting was opened at 7:40 PM. President Doug Linden welcomed all present and thanked Dick Krug for organizing the June meeting place. The president reported that there was still no newsletter editor but the newsletter we have now, if not award winning, is sufficient for the membership. He reported that the July meeting would be held at the home of the Jacobson s in Wayland details in the Oil Leak. He went on to report on correspondence: 1. A flyer for what used to be called the Elm Bank Show which is now held at Medfield State Hospital on June 26th. 2. The Codman House show in Lincoln will be July 17th. It was reported that the Manchester show is free this year. The Stowe VT show has suffered the death of the owner of the field where the show is held and that this could be the last year the Stowe show might be held in this field. The secretary s and treasurer s report were accepted as printed in the Oil Leak Concerning membership; A prospective member Chris Page was present at the meeting. (Grandson of Page s Model A s Garage formerly of Haverhill, NH). In the absence of the tour directors, President Doug mentioned the Ice Cream tour to be held the next day would go from the Grange to Westborough. the Hampton Inn. The meet s Grand Tour will be led by Rich Batstone a 46 mile route around the Wachusett Reservoir. Local police and local newspapers will be notified along the route and the Worcester club has agreed to help with spotters along the way. Judging will be at the Lancaster Kimball's. Friday night will have a State Fair game night. The oldies group the Reminisants will be heard on Saturday evening and Sunday there will be a brunch. Baked goods are being solicited. Nan Linden reported on the Raffle room at the meet. Lottery Tickets are being collected for a lottery ticket basket. Joyce Croce made a quilt and the thread heads are also donating a Model A Quilt. Central Mass Powder-coating has given a gift certificate for five powder-coated wheels. The NH club and the Long Island Club are each donating baskets for the raffle room, Treasurer Andy has made Nantucket pocketbook and basket for the raffle. Dick O Brien is working on ads in the program book. Another planning meeting will be in the second week of July. Marcom has invited us to participate with them in celebrating their 60th with 60 Model A s at Holmes Transportation in Norfolk. The meeting was adjourned at 8:13 PM. Respectfully Submitted John Erb, Secretary Jo Johnson updated us on the progress of the New England Meet to be held in September. The hotels would be the Westford Regency and 3

4 TOUR REPORTS May 22 - Wellesley Veterans Parade May 26 - Dinner Tour The Wellesley Veterans Parade is an event the club participates in to recognize the service and sacrifices our veterans have give to the country. This year the parade weather was iffy but we had 6 Model A s in the stroll down the route, honking and waving to the spectators. Following the parade, the group bee-lined over to Casey s in Natick for some gourmet hot dogs. Pictures on page 5 It was a beautiful evening for a tour as 10 Model A s, with an average of two persons each, formed at the Sudbury Grange for a 6:30PM departure. As we were leaving we sighted Don Ross and Sue coming down RT 27, making our group 11 cars. The goal was to visit a place we had not been to before; but, that is getting pretty hard to do. Turns out our own Dick O Brien led a tour to this same destination last year..i found that out from member s conversations after arrival. In any event we had a pleasant ride down Nobscot Rd to RT 9 in Framingham. For ice cream, ouir destination was Mad Willys. Mad Willys serves only hot dogs with their ice cream, we visited the sandwich and pizza shop next door for our meals. The food was very good. The company was great, and the evening air was very nice, All in all, a fun evening out with our cars. June 8 - Ice Cream Tour This tour was a milestone as it was the first tour the Linden s Model A has been on for over a year. YEAH! We had 4 Model A s, a 56 T-bird and a modern leave the Grange. Two members met us at the ice cream stand in Westborough along with the Linden s grandchildren. The only problem was the darn weather. It was so cold, you didn t have to worry about the ice cream melting. I don t know about the others, but Nan & I had some hot coffee when we got home. Rich Batstone Tour Leader. At the left, our Model A s on display for the residents at Concord Park. At right, Rick Gadbois giving a ride to one of the residents. All this before the rains came later in the evening. 4
