And yes, our membership has grown in size and all officer positions are filled, which is something that many of our other Florida chapters cannot say. This year we have tripled raffle ticket sales, thanks to the high level of participation from everyone. We improved our website, named our first Couple of the Year, named a Road Captain and received the most improved newsletter award. Whew, that s a lot of change for FL2-O in one year. Looking forward to 2016, I d like to set some goals: Continue to grow membership by retaining current members and adding new members. Let s all be sunshine ladies and gents in order to make our Gatherings welcoming to the new members. All officer positions are filled due to appointment of Forrest Appleton as Motorist Awareness Coordinator. Additionally, we have added an Assistant Rider Educator team, appointed our Couple of the Year and for the first time have an Individual of the Year. I am challenging everyone to participate in the Levels program. Maintain your current level and work towards moving up one level. The new training location in Wellington will make it easier to take the instructor lead classes. This year we are working as a team to make our newsletter a serious contender in the newsletter competition. Articles and photos are being submitted by not only officers, but also members. The challenge for the fun stuff is for each of us to participate. I look forward to having a robust ride schedule, one that everyone makes at least one scheduled ride this year, also a full kick tire dinner offering when we are not riding. 3 3 CHAPTER RIDER EDUCATION Barry Covard/ Nancy Karnell Larry & Tammy Pounds Chapter Safe Miles Program The Rider Education (REP) Levels program has been around for many years, but not all riders aspire to achieve all four Levels. However, all riders should commit to riding SAFE. That s why this year we are starting a Safe Miles Program for our Chapter. This is different from the program administered by the Rider Education Levels Program in which an individual rider earns a rocker bar or a patch to wear for safe miles ridden. This will be easy and almost painless. All you have to do is let me know the number of safe miles you have ridden each month. You can , call or log your miles on the sign-in sheet at the monthly gathering. I will accumulate the total each month and track them on a monthly graph in the Newsletter. We ll set the first year s goal at 125,000 miles for the Chapter (based on about 20 active riders). Now what is a safe Mile? A Safe Mile is defined as the number of accident free miles you have driven on a motorcycle (any motorcycle) each month. If you ride multiple motorcycles, two or three wheels, report it all. An accident is defined as any incident that results in reportable property damage or personal injury during the operation or use of a motorcycle. Reportable includes, but is not limited to, any law enforcement accident report or insurance claim that was filed as a result of the incident. It is a means of tracking the number of safe, accident free miles that have been ridden. If/when an accident occurs, our Chapter reverts to 0 Safe Miles. Laying your motorcycle down in your driveway because your leg was too short doesn t count nor does a speeding ticket. Riding without all our safety gear is not counted against our Safe Miles goal. I know occasionally, we may witness that some of our fellow riders do not always wear their helmet, long sleeves or long pants, but remember, we are not the GWRRA- Sheriff Deputies. It is true the Level Fours have made a pledge to wear all the gear all the time, but have you considered that when you go one mile over the speed limit, or when you don t get a foot down at the stop sign - you are breaking the law. Which is a lot worse than breaking a pledge. We are all responsible for ourselves. Let s keep the peer pressure at home. We should ALL try to lead by example and wear all our safety equipment and let people know the potential benefits, but let s not drive members away by our insistence or pressure. It is a challenge for our Chapter to have zero motorcycle accidents and injuries through This movement can be an ongoing goal to reduce the number of accidents and injuries, and should start today by each of us taking any riding enhancement course we can. Make it your New Year s resolution. Be smart. Be safe. Have fun By: Barry Covard, FL2-O Chapter Educator

4 Ticket Sales As of January 13 our chapter has sold 63 books of tickets. Our chapter earns $1 from each book sold. We need to sell 37 additional books to earn enough money ($100) to cover our chapter dues. So far, based on turned in cash, sales leaders are: John DuBose and Bud/Barb Parish books/$100 each Top sales person wins $25 gift certificate to Southern Pig and Cattle. Please complete sales for tickets you have in your possession by March 1 and turn in your money to Larry Pounds. Also, it is important you turn in any tickets you are not able to sell ASAP. These tickets must go back to District. MOTORIST AWARENESS Forrest R. Appleton, CWO4, USCG (Ret.) Motorist Awareness Coordinator GWRRA Chapter FL2-O I d like to introduce myself as the newly appointed Motorist Awareness Coordinator for Chapter FL2-O and provide you with a brief bio. My name is Forrest Appleton and I ve resided in this area for the past two years. I am originally from the Great State of Minnesota (GO Vikings, Twins, Wild, Golden Gophers, Timberwolves, and Lynx!). I am a retired Chief Warrant Officer (W-4) who served on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard for more than 31 years. I have two adult sons from two marriages; the younger of whom I proudly raised as a single Dad. Before relocating to Florida in early 2014, I lived in Maryland for 15 years and was an active member of GWRRA Chapter MD-F. Besides riding motorcycles, among my other interests are hockey; naturally, since I hail from THE State of Hockey. I am a USA Hockey, NCAA, NIHOA Certified On-Ice Official and a former player (goalie). Additionally, I play drums as a hobby. I am privileged to have been chosen as the new Motorist Awareness Coordinator and look forward to helping educate the non-riding public about the differences between driving and riding; as well as strategies that will keep everyone on the road safer. Message from Couple of the Year Bud & Barb Parish Here s a website you might find handy~~ Great resource for finding entertainment, exhibits, restaurants and hotels for yourself or to entertain visitors. The state is divided into seven sections. You might find a ride suggestion to pass along to John! Enjoy

6 JANUARY 2016 GATHERING FL2-O Director, David Morris welcomed a large contingency of FL2-O Chapter members as well as visitors from West Palm s FL2-A and two Gold Wing riders from Ohio, Ron and Sharon Montgomery, friends of Bud and Barb Parish who are spending the winter here. David s first order of business was to congratulate and announce the names of those who have accepted new responsibilities within the Chapter. Larry and Tammy Pounds have been appointed to the position of Assistant Rider Educator and Forrest Appleton is the new Motorist Awareness Coordinator. Barb and Bud Parish were selected as Couple of the Year for a second term and for the first time ever, David appointed an Individual of the Year, John Du Bose who has distinguished himself as our fearless Road Captain leader on many fun filled rides throughout the year. Larry & Tammy Pounds Asst Rider Educator Forrest Appleton Motorist Awareness John DuBose 2016 Individual of the Year Bud & Barb Parish 2016 Couple of the year Barry also reminded everyone to keep track of their mileage and put the number of miles you ve traveled each month on the sign-up roster so that he can keep track of it. The annual goal will be to reach 125,000 accident free miles as a chapter. Herb reported that it has been determined that the 1500 Gold Wings from 1988 may have a wiring problem. They were set up with scotch locks which can corrode. Herb recommended that the wiring should be shrink-wrapped. Stay away from scotch locks.they are a problem, he cautioned. Larry Pounds reported that Raffle tickets have been selling well. Barry announced a fun way to generate rapid ticket sales. Members bought 5 tickets for $5. You put your name on one ticket and that goes into a hat. The other 4 tickets remain nameless and they go into another hat. We draw a name from the first hat and that person wins all the tickets in the second hat. Wow an opportunity to win hundreds of tickets for just $5 and the increased possibility of winning the grand prize which is a brand new Gold Wing. We all agreed to the new format that Barry outlined and the remaining tickets were all sold out in one evening. Thank you to all the Gold Wingers who help support the Chapter because a portion of the ticket sales go back to the operation of our Chapter. John DuBose announced that he has many new rides on the horizon. He will lead a rides to Arcadia, Hotel Jacaranda in Avon Park, Lakeland and Harpoon Harry s Restaurant in Punta Gorda. Go to the Chapter website and check out the calendar for the dates and times of these rides and don t miss the fun!!

7 Forrest Appleton gave a follow-up story on the Gold Wing recall of the brake master cylinder. Forrest said that he had gone into the shop to have the master cylinder replaced and when he picked up his bike, it had a white residue on many black parts. He thought it could be wiped clean but after many attempts he realized that they had somehow turned the black to white. The shop discovered that the Honda Contact Brake Cleaner was the culprit and that it may have been contaminated. They replaced the damaged parts at no charge and made note of the problem. Barb Parish is ordering Gold Wing with the chapter logo and invited everyone to give her their orders. She even has wick away shirts available for only $20. Contact Barb if you are interested. Ray Vega from FL2-A gave a report on his Rider Ed classes now being conveniently held in Wellington. He said that his Feb. classes are at capacity now but he is setting up new classes for the Spring. We want everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to be properly certified so sign up for Ray Vega s ERC and TRC classes being held at the following address: 2175 Wellington Green Drive in Wellington. It s in a brand new parking lot at the west end of the Wellington Mall in the Village of Wellington. Join Ray for breakfast at 7am at the Gun Club Diner and the class starts at 9am-1pm. WriW Written by Terry Henderson Chapter Conference Barry reported on the Chapter Conference that he, David and Terry attended in Orlando on Jan The conference venue was in a new location, International Royal Palm Hotel, in Orlando, an excellent Conference Center with nice amenities including a delicious breakfast buffet. Barry encouraged everyone to sign up for the March Rally which will be held at the same great hotel located right in the heart of International Drive where you ll discover wonderful restaurants and exciting amusement parks. The cost is only $89 per night and that includes breakfast for two in the hotel restaurant valued at $30. David commented that the Vendors at the March Rally will be set up inside the Conference Center this year rather than outside which will make it nice even during inclement weather. Other Vendors who will be able to work on your Gold Wing will be set up outside behind the pool and gator park. You ll be able to make an appointment to have your bike detailed, pin striped or fit with new parts. Sign up today!

8 CHAP Chapter Rides Saturday, January 16, Arcadia Historical District/Shopping Lunch at Magnolias Restaurant FL2-O had 8 bikes and 11 riders out for a beautiful Florida day of riding 250 miles. We had some fog from Martin/St. Lucie to Okeechobee but clear sailing to Arcadia. Scenic Crewsville Road is always a treat for some curves, citrus, strawberry fields and cattle pastures. We took a ride through the historic district before parking the wings. A few of us checked out Rattle Snake Saloon but too smoky, so we left. Others checked out the antique stores before eating lunch at Magnolias. We ran into GWRRA Chapter FL2-H Wauchula who had also ridden to eat at Magnolias. Riders: Bud/Barb Parish, Joe/Mary Parish, Greg/Percy Comstock, Jenks Davies, Forest Appleton, Phil Baxter and friend Carla on her Cam Am and John DuBose. Thanks goes out to Greg/Percy for pulling up the tail. Written by John DuBose Wednesday, January 20, 2016 Avon Park, Hotel Jacaranda - CD Dave/Terry were tail gunners with 7 bikes and 10 riders out for a 230 miles of great riding to Avon Park and interesting lunch at the Jacaranda Hotel. We all enjoyed our meals and even got to see dance stars Dave and Terry dance to the piano man s tunes. After lunch we made a short detour to Maxwell Groves- - an old family business selling fruits, honey and many other goodies. Then we rode through the Historic District of Sebring before making our way back to Okeechobee for our ice cream treat. Today s riders showed exceptional courage riding in temps that started out at 52 and never got above 65 degrees. Riders were: CD Dave/Terry, Jim/Marilyn Rich, Bud/Barb Parish, Joe Parish, John Bettencourt, Jenks Davies and Lead, John DuBose.

9 Written by John DuBose Congratulations to Greg Comstock for earning Senior Master Level. Barry Covard presents patch to Greg at our January 2016 Gathering. Qualifications of Senior Master are: Those members meeting a minimum 5 years active participation and continuous re-certification and who are current members may be recognized and receive a Senior Master patch. After 10 years it is a Grand Master Patch. TECHNICAL INFO SERVICE REMINDER from Stewart Hartzog at Florida Sports. The brake related Safety Recall that applies to 2001 thru 2012 Honda Goldwings applies as much to trikes as it does to bikes. Florida Sports will perform an inspection to determine whether a recall modification is required. The caveat is that if the secondary master cylinder has been disconnected in the process of triking the bike then the owner is responsible for paying for the inspection. If the secondary master cylinder has not been disconnected then Honda will cover the cost. Call Florida Sports at to make an appointment Provided by Jim Rich

10 MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTOR BILL & CHERYL SMITH For Cheryl and I, January is a very busy month both in GWRRA and our personal calendar. In December we were camping in the Ocala National Forest over New Year along with 6 other GWRRA friends from Chapter FL2-A. We were very close to Palatka which is really close to Welaka. What happens in Welaka on New Year s Day? That s right, the First Ride of the Year to Shrimps R Us! There were 388 GWRRA members there from a host of different Chapters including our home Chapter FL2-A. The weather was good and the food was delicious. Fifteen people won $ each in the 50/50 give it all away drawings! A great get together and a great time! The next weekend was the Chapter Conference in our new venue for the District Rally, the International Palms Resort, in Orlando. Most were very happy with the resort and all the minor problems were, or are, being addressed. Bill and Gina Berry are still working out some details with the resort but it looks to be a great rally in March! At the Conference I gave out information and talked about the new rules if your Chapter wants to compete in the Newsletter Competition for For a complete description of the rules go to the Florida District website and look under rules. The next weekend Cheryl and I went camping for a week in Wesley Chapel and attended the Tampa RV Show along with 4 of our GWRRA friends from FL2-A. We aren t looking to buy, but it is interesting to go to seminars and see what s new. The indoor vendors are also FUN to visit! While we were there several GWRRA members in the area contacted us. We were able to get together for a lunch with Bob and Nan Shrader as well as Joanne Jacob. It was FUN getting together with our GWRRA family on Florida s west coast. We got home Tuesday and went to the South Florida Fair that night. Wednesday night we went to the FL2-A Kick Tire. On Thursday night we rode in the motorcycle parade at the South Florida Fair along with about 20 of our FL2-A friends. Over 350 bikes rode through the fair that night. The next weekend due to weather, we drove to Lakeland on Friday to attend the FL2-L Rally on Saturday. We had a great time along with about 16 FL2-A friends and I don t know how many other attendees! It was a good turn out and everyone had FUN! When we got home Saturday night Cheryl and I went to a local BSA Troop 308 spaghetti dinner. On Sunday we rode with 8 of FL2-A friends on a cold morning breakfast ride and a visit to the Elliott Museum. Just to let you know, I didn t cover everything we did on our calendar and January isn t done yet! In February we are planning on some Chapter Visitations, an ERC put on by Assistant District Ride Educator Ray Vega, Chapter FL2-G s Chapter Chili Challenge and a 2 day ride around Florida s back roads with Chapter FL2-A just to name a few. Get out and have FUN with your local Chapters. You can do it! Bill and Cheryl Smith Assistant District Directors Serving FL2-A, FL2-E, FL2-O & FL2-R
