2 Sacramento Jaguar Club Minutes December 15, 2013 Members met for the Annual Holiday Party/ Brunch at the DoubleTree. Natalie, Bob, Judy and Bruce arrived very early to set up and decorate. As always the Restaurant had done an excellent job of preparing the room for us. When all had gathered there were 39 in attendance: Andy and Linda Banta; Wally Butler and his friend Gary; Jim and Vivian Collipriest; Bruce and Judy Dunow; Gerald Garner and Linda Panattoni; Ruth Hughes; Ron and Franca Lingren; Art and Gretchen Lucas; Patrick and Linda van Merveldt; Bob and Natalie Olson; Jerry and Mary Reynolds; Ritt and Lila Rittenhouse; Sam Schiller & Gwen his guest; Mary Snyder and Ellie Jones; Richard and Susan Starch; John & Fran Thomson; Steve & Joellen Veirs; and new members Bill and Stephanie Padavona as well as prospective members Skip and Mardi Quain. Andy welcomed all, asked Bob to introduce the new members/guests and passed on other introductions in the interest of time (and fun). Andy asked for a moment of silence in memory of David Whitworth. Results of the officer election were announced by Linda Banta; there were 32 ballots. The nominating committee s slate of officers was elected unanimously. Richard Starch swore in and installed the new officers: Andy Banta President; Ron Lingren V-P for Operations; Steve Veirs - Treasurer; Linda Banta - Secretary; Bob Olson - Membership Chair. Michael Hunter - V--President for Activities and Enrique Ugalde - JCNA Representative were absent and will be installed in January. Board members were thanked for their service during 2013 Jim Collipriest gave a brief report on the project cars. Bob Olson was awarded the Outstanding Member Certificate and a gift card for his continuing excellent work as membership chair. The Holiday Party Committee was thanked for their creativity. Natalie is looking for some else to take over leadership for the coming year. After an excellent brunch and gift raffle, all were notified that the Annual Planning Meeting will take place January 12, Sunday, at Noon at Niello s Sacramento Jaguar. This is the opportunity for input into next year s activities. Festivities concluded at the DoubleTree about 2 PM and probably continued indefinitely outside the venue. Respectfully submitted, Linda Banta, Secretary 2

4 PRESIDENT S MUSINGS I was pleased to see so many of you at the Holiday Party; I know some of you traveled a considerable distance to attend; your devotion is appreciated. It certainly looked like everyone had a good time. A special thanks to those who put together a great party. As we look to January, there are a couple things to think about. First on the 12 th we will have our annual planning meeting at Sacramento Jaguar; details are elsewhere in this newsletter. I would encourage you to attend and bring your suggestions for events. While it is good to repeat some of the old favorites, it is also good to have fresh ideas. In particular, I would like to have one overnight event and would like your input on the distance to be traveled and possible venues. We also need to start planning for our concours in the summer or early autumn. Secondly, we have been invited to join the San Francisco club, the Jag Associates Group, at their crabfest on January 25 th ; again details are elsewhere in these pages. I know it s a long distance but I would ask you to think about attending. It will be a good opportunity to meet some of the JAG members. Subject to change on the 12 th, our first event will probably be in February. While looking on the internet for something else, I came across a compilation of the Jaguar XK 120 Service bulletins from 1948 to Even if you aren t really into antique Jags, they do provide some interesting insight into Jaguar s operations at that time. First, there are a total of 65 different bulletins, roughly one a month. One of the early bulletins mentions a throttle restrictor in the form of a stop under the throttle pedal to prevent the cars being run at excessive speed during their early life. An August 1950 bulletin notes air cleaners are being fitted as standard equipment and are desirable for earlier cars*. They would be provided free of charge if the purchaser provides the earlier chassis number; it sounds like the ever frugal William Lyons even kept track of service bulletins. An undated but probably October 1952 bulletin says tandem --aka dual--master cylinders were being fitted at least partially in response to brake failures due to the rear brakes being adjusted the wrong way (clockwise instead of anti clockwise). It makes you wonder who they had for dealers. Most of the items were more technical and historically less interesting; e. g. Messrs Joseph Lucas Limited supplying headlight conversion so sealed beam bulbs could be installed and a change to slightly wider wheels. From what I ve read elsewhere, for much of its history, Jaguar has been an evolutionary operation. The number and nature of bulletins would tend to confirm this notion. Evolution came in more dramatic form when the front of the XK 150 was derived from the XK 140. The front fenders were rotated up about 15 degrees at the back, and the bonnet was split down the middle and had a piece welded in. Later the original E-Type was stretched to become the E-Type 2+2. Inboard disk brakes that made sense for racing on the D-Type were adapted to the E-Type and went on to be used on the XJS right into the 90s. There are many other examples but I think you get the idea. Andy *Should concours entrants of pre August 1950 K120s remove the air filters prior to showing their cars? Page V-I of the JCNA Concours Rule Book states the recognized standard is The Entry s configuration and condition shall be as it was officially documented or intended to have left the factory. 5 Ever wonder how many cars and what type of Jags we have in our club? Well here is the answer! Thank you Bob Olson and Mary Snyder 5
6 . XKs Unlimited s Jaguar Celebration and 40th Anniversary Weekend Recap October 4-5-6, San Luis Obispo, Ca You re probably tired of hearing about the absolutely gorgeous weather we enjoy here on California s central coast, but the weather for our open house weekend was, well, absolutely gorgeous. The activities kicked off with a gathering at the host hotel, where we rented a suite with an attached open-air courtyard. Complimentary wine, tasty hors d oeuvres and enthusiastic friends made for a wonderful time Friday evening. Our open house started Saturday morning and rolled through about 3 p.m. We saw a steady flow of customers and enthusiasts interested in saving on parts for their Jaguars and seeing the restoration facilities first hand. Our invited guest, Mr. Philip Porter, was on site to sign copies of his newly released book, The Iconic Jaguar XK. (Mr. Porter is a respected author and historian, as well as founder of the XK Club and E-Type Club. These clubs focus on the care, restoration, and active use of these two models. Both clubs produce a 50-page slick magazine each month devoted to the goings on of these favorite Jaguar cars.) On Saturday evening the ballroom at the host hotel was transformed into Casino Royale. Professional dealers and gaming tables were in place as well as dinner and dancing. Mr. Porter was our guest speaker and charmed the audience with his stories and lighthearted tal This year we offered a grand prize give-away of airfare for two to London. Each meal ticket was given an entry into the drawing and extra entries could be purchased to fill the hopper in your favor. Monday afternoon, October 7th, we had our two English guests, Mr. Philip Porter and Mr. Aubry Finburgh, perform the draw. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Frank Gauer, from the Los Angeles club, won the trip to London. Congratulations Frank! (Have a look at the video of the drawing on the Open House web page: 6 number of activities throughout this weekend benefitted the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Through the generosity of our customers and friends, XKs Unlimited was pleased to make a gift of $3,080 to the Society.

8 Car of The Month Tom and Ruth Hughes The car of the month is a 1963 Jaguar Coupe owned by Tom and Ruth Hughes. They bought it from the original owner in about He bought it in England while spending the winter there and then had it shipped to the U.S. They still have it although it is seldom driven This brings to mind an overnight Gold Rush Photo Poker Ralleye in Sonora in 1994 The ralleye started at Java Centrale n Folsom under the threat of rain. The first stop was in Dry Town where they stopped to check out the number of deceased buried in the cemetery before Immediately there after it began to rain. Several members declared that their tops were not going up but it was later decided that the top should go up on the roadsters. Several members took refuge under a grape arbor. The last car into the picnic area was the Hughes, Tom and Ruth. From the picnic area they traveled to Stevenot Winery and then on to Murphys. Prior to their final destination they stopped at Columbia. At last they arrived in Jamestown and a hot shower in their motel. Everyone was on their own for dinner. Some members ate dinner in Jamestown, others in Sonora. Everyone enjoyed a good night, dry sleep in the comfortable motel. Prizes for the best poker hand went to Tom and Ruth Hughes with two pairs. Mata Valcanas was elated to discover that she had a joker which won a prize. Bill and Harlene Issa got all the questions right which meant that they too won a prize. Because the Shannons got out and actually counted all those deceased and buried before 1900 they too won a prize. It is events like this that create lasting memories. We hope to see you on the 8 next event in 2014, twenty years after this 1994 event.
