3 President's Musings by Andy Banta, Club President PRESIDENT S MUSINGS Based on the brief report I received from Eleanor Bunker, the drive to the Sierra Nevada Brewery was a big success. I m sorry Linda and I were unable to attend. At the time I still had my foot in a boot following surgery and was unable to help with the driving. By the time you read this I hope to be out and about as usual. We are looking forward to the Oktoberfest on the 18 th and plan to stay overnight; details appear elsewhere in these pages. Speaking of being out and about, I understand Sylvia Jackson (a charter member of SJC) and her daughter are traveling to England; we wish them well, and safe travel. And mentioning Britain, The Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, which took place in Gaydon, kick- started the Invictus Games - the new international sporting event for wounded warriors. Just to add a little glamour, Prince Harry arrived in an F- Type and, among other appearances, handed out the first medals. Looking to the future, the annual Holiday Party is scheduled for Sunday, December 7 th ; as in the past, it will be at the Doubletree. Mark your calendars! Many thanks to the JCNA Membership Committee which periodically communicates their outputs to us. They recently forwarded a link to a map of all JCNA local clubs. The map was created by Ed Avis. The link is - Eu3kB. (You have to hold down control then click to open). It should be helpful when traveling to other parts of the country; hopefully they can transform it into a smart phone app. Your latest Jaguar Journal included a ballot for Regional Directors. We actually have a choice among three candidates; their bios are included in the magazine. I would urge you to vote! Also as detailed in the Jaguar Journal, Jaguar created a modern version of the Mark 2 for their chief designer, Ian Callum. Apparently as soon as the public saw it, Jaguar started getting phone calls from people who wanted one. They now say there will be a small production run with an estimated sale price of about $600,000. Even with inflation taken into account this must be 10 or 20 time the cost of an original Mark 2. My question is this: are they going to build these cars from scratch or build them on existing Mark 2 chassis? The latter would avoid having to meet all of the current safety and emission standards. As you may have read elsewhere Jaguar has announced their new XE model sports sedan at a price of 27,000 pounds ($44,000) in Britain. According to Reuters, this is their cheapest car ever. Again even taking inflation into account I find this hard to believe. In any case the pictures look very interesting. Apparently the authorities on the docks are being more diligent about checking classic cars that are being exported. For the second time in roughly the last year they have intercepted a car stolen 40 plus years ago. This time it was an E- Type jaguar. Unlike the previous car I don t remember the make and model which had been nicely restored, the E- Type was much the worse for wear. The rightful owner plans to have it restored. 5 Sept. Driving Event - Cruise to the Brewery! (p. 1 of 2) Submitted by: Elinor Bunker Six cars participated in the September Drive, 5 of the 6 were Jaguars. Attendees: Richard and Susan Starch, Bruce Dunow, Wally Butler, Ed and Alice Stoll, Larry and Sherron Jackson, Gerry Garner and Linda Panattoni, Ben and Elinor Bunker. We met up in the Red Robin parking lot in Yuba City and drove to the Sierra Nevada Brewery for lunch. Ben Bunker had kindly stayed behind at the Pub restaurant to hold tables for the group of 12. (p. 1 of 2) Submitted by: Elinor Bunker SJC Shirt discussion - continued Finally, they could also supply light weight polo shirts with an embroidered logo for $ set up which I assume to be similar to that for the t shirts. A Very informal poll of those in attendance gave the following results: **Most everyone who had an opinion preferred Polo shirts with embroidery. **Most seemed to think a light color would be more comfortable while standing out in the sun at shows or other activities. **There was no clear consensus about 1 or 2 logos. ***Everyone thought it was a good idea that the club pay setup fees. The club is exploring getting some polo shirt samples to present at a future club meeting. Credits: Elinor Bunker After a time of visiting and renewing acquaintances we took the tour of brewery operations, which ended in 30 minutes of tasting. Our tour leader's name was also Ben and he gave an excellent tour. He was able to answer any and all questions put to him and he knew his stuff. In fact all the staff at Sierra Nevada was professional, courteous, efficient and cordial. They made the day a complete success. 7 Happy Ending Submitted by: Mary Snyder, ABC News Online Forty- six years ago Ivan Schneider, successful Manhattan lawyer, bought himself the Jaguar convertible that would feature in a most unusual tale of unrequited love. It was the first (and "prettiest") of many luxury cars he would own, his companion on fast drives and the only one that was ever stolen. Forty- six years later, a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol analyst running a routine export check through a stolen car database came up with a hit. The 1967 Jaguar XKE was hot. The problem: It was already on a cargo ship, in a container, headed for Europe, two days out of the Port of Long Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Investigators with the California Highway Patrol and nonprofit National Insurance Crime Bureau got to work. New York police still had the March 1968 incident report. CHP investigator Michael Maleta spoke with Schneider in Florida, where he now lives. Schneider thought it was a prank. "After we convinced him, he was excited," said Maleta. After all, Schneider told The Associated Press on Wednesday, he would think of the car every time he bought a new one. And, he said, he is a car guy who has owned quite a few exotics. For the months he owned it, he was in love. "I've always said that was the prettiest," Schneider, now 82, said. Tracing the car's history, Maleta learned the Southern California man exporting it to the Netherlands had bought it about three months ago from an owner in the San Joaquin Valley, who himself had it 40 years. What happened between its disappearance from the concrete canyons of the Upper East Side and its California sojourn Maleta hopes his investigation will answer that. After its out- and- back sea journey to the Netherlands, the car is back in Southern California, more than two months after the law finally found it. It's rusty and scratched, but still worth about $24,000 and far more if restored, as Schneider plans to do. He just won't push it too hard. It's old, so is he, and though beautiful it is known for trouble under the hood. "I'll use it as a Sunday car," Schneider said. "They were never reliable." 9 The Jaguar Recovery Team Report by Jim Collipriest, Crew Leader. THE JAGUAR RECOVERY TEAM REPORT 1953 XK120 FHC (Howie), Project VII. Report XII Fit checking a new steering wheel to the steering column, we discovered excessive endplay in the steering box. This meant the assembly had to come out again and the box disassembled to add internal shims. Fighting all those loose balls again. After doing it several times, it is no longer a difficult task. Practice makes easier if not perfect. Final assembly and adjustment was accomplished using thicker wheel bearing grease to keep those errant balls in place. Drive shaft universal joints have been replaced. Parking brake, clutch and brake pedals and linkage have been installed. Steering box worm and loose ball bearings. Bob and Steve remove worn universal joints. Pedals and linkage. Progress with instrument panel. Instruments were cleaned and are believed functional. The tachometer was frozen solid. It was disassembled and cleaned after un- sticking the input shaft. Sand blasting drum brake components was initiated and brake assembly will be a primary objective for October. 10 The Jaguar Recovery Team Report - continued by Jim Collipriest, Crew Leader THE JAGUAR RECOVERY TEAM REPORT 1958 Mark IX Saloon, Project VIII. Report VIII Engine assembly proceeded with the installation of a new water pump and modification of the oil filter mount to accommodate a modern spin on type of filter. Back ordered front brake cylinder assemblies were finally received so reassembly and installation will now commence. The transmission front seal has been replaced and the cleaned filter and pan have been installed. In October the transmission will be mated to the engine. New water pump.!! Sacramento Jaguar Club JagWyre Membership Report for October 2014 Steve Veirs, Treasurer, and I met to reconcile dues and roster information for JCNA. I expect to present a motion to set 2015 s annual dues at the October Board meeting. I follow up with potential members I hear about from our members, Zach Mongston, Richard Farler, and others from Sacramento Jaguar, JCNA s referral service, and other sources.
