4 VICTORY ONCE AGAIN By Cameron Heo Featured Writer - Hanley Composite As the school bell rang, and the students rushed out of school, the Hanley Saber football team was only getting started as they geared up and headed into battle against the Hudson Bay Riders. Vehicles began to pile around the soggy field and bystanders from both Hanley and Hudson Bay crowded around the area. The stage was set for the perfect game. The game had started with the Sabers taking control. With each touchdown, the crowd roared and went wild. People were shouting, kids were ecstatic, and vehicles were honking. The points slowly racked up, and before you knew it, the Hanley Sabers had a gargantuan lead over the Hudson Bay Riders. When asked about the most difficult thing to do during the game, Ryan Herman (a coach of the Hanley Saber football team), responded, Keeping focus and keeping your intensity level high, In the final quarter, the Hudson Bay Riders defiantly pushed back and began to gain some momentum, however, it was too late. The Riders did manage to get fourteen points, but it was no match to the seventy points the Hanley Sabers accumulated during the game. Both teams fought hard and did their best, though that was obvious. It was an absolute thrill to watch, and a fantastic game for the players. In the end, the Hanley Sabers beat the Hudson Bay Riders 70-14! Hanley Saber s Justin Kloetz (88) chases the ball along side Hudson Bay Rider s Tanner Lang (77) and Ty Litton (22). 6 Playing with Fire By Glenda Pryor The heat s the thing. Gas-fed flames rage at 2,300 degrees inside cylindrical ovens known as glory holes. These are used to heat glass for shaping and blowing. Glass-blowers hover close to the heat wielding their blow pipes gracefully. The moves are slow and deliberate. This is Al Hiebert. Hiebert is a craftsman in glassblowing and heads the glassblowing class at The Hot Spot in the Resort Village of Shields. During the October 21st weekend two students, Louisa and Angus Ferguson travelled from Meacham, SK to learn from Hiebert. The Ferguson s start with a safety lesson, to ensure they learn the safe process of glassblowing. Radiant heat is dangerous and Hiebert wants them to be aware of any potential risks in the work area before they get down to business. This is a two day course, with day one spent learning how to make a solid object (paper weight); how to handle and turn a stainless steel pipe; how to dip in and out of the furnace; how to dip in colour; and how to use the bench to manipulate the object. Day two is the glass-blowing portion, they learn how to blow through a pipe to make a bubble, and they then continue to dip, shape and blow until they achieve the size and shape of what they are forming (vases, garden Student Angus Ferguson (left) shapes molten glass as Teacher Al Hiebert (right) helps turn the stainless steel pipe or Christmas balls). Both processes are basically the same with the exception with glass-blowing the walls of the object are thin and one has to be careful the object doesn t cool down too much or it will crack. For more information on classes visit Classes are available on the weekends. Call Joan or Al for more information Angus Ferguson dipping glass in the furnace Al Hiebert (L) shows Louisa and Angus Ferguson dipping-in colour technique 6

7 MLA BRONWYN EYRE Happy fall, everybody! Here s the latest Leg news: The Jim Pattison Children s Hospital in Saskatoon is 70 per cent complete. The project remains on time and on budget, with a scheduled opening in late Once completed, the Jim Pattison Children s Hospital will better meet the needs of our province s children by enhancing patient care and enabling the recruitment and retention of pediatric specialists. New overpasses at Warman and Martensville are about 40 per cent complete. Construction, which will improve safety at two of our fastestgrowing communities, is part of more than $100 million in highway construction and maintenance in the Saskatoon area this year. This includes Highway 5 passing lanes, Highway 7 twinning, bridge work on Highway 11, and Highway 16 paving. Meanwhile, progress on the Regina Bypass continues, including the opening of two new overpasses (White City and Balgonie) and the continued twinning of Highway 39 between Estevan and Bienfait. Other significant highway upgrades this season include Highway 2 north of Prince Albert; Highway 4 south of Cadillac and north of Swift Current; Highway 12 near Hepburn; Highway 40 near Krydor; Highway 51 near Kelfield; Highway 312 west of Wakaw; and Highway 155 near Green Lake. During the past decade, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested approximately $1.5 billion to repair, renovate and build new schools. This fall, thousands of students and staff in some of Saskatchewan s fastest-growing communities are now attending brand-new schools. Eighteen new schools in Regina, Saskatoon, Warman and Martensville are part of our record investment in 40 new schools in places such as Humboldt, Langenburg, Lloydminster, Oxbow, Porcupine Plain, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Turnor Lake, Weyburn and White City. We have also invested in major repairs and renovations to schools in Balcarres, Duck Lake, Elrose, Gravelbourg, Hafford, Hudson Bay, Humboldt, La Ronge, Leader, Lloydminster, Lumsden, Maple Creek, Martensville, Prince Albert, Regina, Rosthern, Saskatoon, St. Brieux and Weyburn. Until next month! 7

10 Town looks to slash costs with reduced Transfer Station hours Starting November 15, 2017, the Dundurn Transfer Station will no longer be open on Wednesdays. Town Council made the decision with the support of the RM after a review of the towns usage stats and revenue revealed there were not enough users on a Wednesday to justify the expense of mid week hours. Reducing the hours would see a cost savings between the RM and Town of $8,500 to $11,000 on labour, snow clearing and other maintenance costs. In 2016 the Town had a loss of $13,000 at the transfer station. The largest users were for the free items such as compost, burning pit and metals, 77% of users were for these items. We would like to see a user pay system. Right now, any losses at the end of the year are covered by the whole tax base. For example, burning pit items are free but we still have expenses associated with dumping those items such as labour costs to have an attendant, maintenance of the pit and station roads etc. For the Town, the current fee structure needs to be reviewed, said Administration. A committee was struck earlier in the year between the Town and RM to review the new scale rates and explore possible tipping or entrance fees to help cover the costs of the transfer station. No decisions have been made, but a reduction in hours is a good start at controlling the expenses and maximizing usage, said Town Administration. Hockey Food is Back! Remember the days spending all your time at the local ice rink? When you were hungry you enjoyed the comfort food served at the concession. Well, it s been one month since opening the concession stand in the Dundurn Arena and Lori Washington is happy that she has been busy. Her winter will only get busier as tournaments start up. Lori s day begins at 3:30 to prepare the concession for opening at 4:00 pm till 9:00pm, seven days a week. During busy periods she brings in an extra worker to serve the customers while she cooks. Lori wants to provide the best service to her customers. 10

11 Every Batch From Scratch By Glenda Pryor The oven and stove are on, and Brandyn Larocque is in the kitchen making desserts and baking goods. Brandyn loves to bake! What started out as a just for fun side business, has turned into a huge success. She started by placing a simple post on Facebook s buy and sell pages and on auction sites offering her goods. Now she bakes in the evenings and on the weekends, after returning home from her full-time job in Saskatoon as a Lab X-Ray Technologist. Brandyn receives orders from many places, the communities include the Town of Dundurn, the RM of Dundurn, Martensville, Davidson, Clavet, Allan, Warman, and Saskatoon. All her baking is fresh and once she receives an order she will have it ready by the following day. Her husband Stewart helps out with delivering the baking to clients. Brandyn said he enjoys the job because he appreciates meeting and talking with people. She plans to increase her exposure at the upcoming Hanley Trade Show on November 19th. This will be her first trade show with her baking and she is looking forward to the opportunity to meet new people and gain a bigger clientele. With the upcoming festive season, she will bake just about anything and will be making assorted trays of Christmas goodies. You can reach her at or bdulle@sasktel.net. 11
