For Membership Information Contact any officer or westernparegion@hotmail.com or Visit our website: From Your President You ll notice a photo from the Norwin Hills Car Cruise this past Saturday, April 18th, on the cover of this issue of The Western Round-Up. The really nice spring days are finally upon us. Jill and I were enjoying a walk around our neighborhood Greensburg and Southwest Greensburg, admiring the magnolia trees and others coming into flower. As we walked, I realized that it was indeed a beautiful Saturday, and that indeed we did have a gift card for Little Ceasar s Pizza, of which there is a location near the Norwin Hills Car Show plaza. What better reason to take in our first Norwin Hills Car Cruise of 2015 than to use up a pizza gift card and bring home dinner? There must have been 400 cars at Norwin when we got there. The variety of what cruises in never ceases to amaze me. I tracked down two Studebakers. Yes, they were hot rods, but I am always glad to see my marque represented. We ran into WPR members Cris and Molly Detwiler and Charlie Schifano, who were also enjoying the delightful 70 degree weather. The Norwin Hills Car Cruise at the Norwin Hills Shopping Center along Route 30 East is one of the earliest car shows to blossom in our area. It starts around the middle of April and continues each and every Saturday until just before Thanksgiving or the first snow flies. It starts around 5:00 p.m. and goes until around 9:00 p.m. depending on the weather and daylight. We had a nice attendance at the Western PA Region Rev-Up Party at the J. Roy Houston Conservation Center near Greensburg on April 11th. See the article and photos on pages 4 and 5. Don t forget to sign up for the bus trips to the Mecum Auctions in Harrisburg at the end July and the AACA Eastern Fall Meet in Hershey on October 10th. See page 7. The WPR Directors have been working with the Eastern Career and Technology Center in Latrobe and the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center in New Stanton, and are looking forward to introducing our members to the 2015 Western PA Region Scan Tool Scholarship Winners at our regular Monthly Meeting on May16th. It s a meeting you won t want to miss. (and there will be pizza!) Enjoy this beautiful spring, Mark Jackson 2

4 Region Revs Up Western Style! The Western PA Region AACA revved up for the start of the 2015 cruising season in true western style as 63 members donned blue jeans, plaid shirts, cowboy hats, and bandanas to attend the Region s Rev-Up Party on Saturday, April 11th. The event was held at the J. Roy Houston Conservation Center, home of the Westmoreland Conservation District near Greensburg. The Center is a re-purposed 1880 s bank barn, which was relocated from Penn Township and rebuilt as an environmentally friendly green building at Donohoe Center. The rustic interior of the barn provided the ideal background for a western themed celebration. As members entered the barn they were greeted by Lee and Chuck Speicher at the registration table and presented with a souvenir bandana filled with flavorful trail mix, and a door prize ticket for a chance to win one of three $50 Sheetz gift cards. There was cold pop, ice tea and water in the big galvanized tub on the slate counter along-side a selection of tasty horse d oeuvres. After Bill Maurer offered grace, a great batch of vittles was served up from Greensburg s Cafe Barista. Folks enjoyed chowing down on oven roasted chicken, sweet and sassy BBQ meatballs, cheesy hash brown potatoes, hobo beans, pasta caesar salad, broccoli salad and rolls. Following dinner awards were presented for the best western duds in the following categories: Most Western - Sheriff Tom Ulishney Most Colorful - Deputy Dodie Ulishney Most Creative -Native American Princess Ashley Kuhns Funniest - Cowgirl Vickie Kuhns Toughest - Bob Inhoff With senses sharpened after a great meal, folks got a chance to test their western trivia know-how with Molly Detwiler. There were two rounds of western-themed 4 Sheriff Tom and Deputy Dodie Ulishney won custom auto-themed bird house prizes for their their great western duds. questions. The first was Who Was The Driver of That Horse? Each table was a team and was presented with a list of famous horses from old-time western movies and television shows. They then had to come up with the names of the western heros who rode those horses example Silver was ridden by the Lone Ranger, Trigger by Roy Rogers and Buttermilk by Dale Evans. The winning team getting the most horse drivers correct was Sheriff Tom and Deputy Dodie Ulishney, Dave and Debbie Sheetz, Carol Calabrace and Barbara Erny. The second trivia game had a musical theme - Who Was That Singing Cowboy? Each table team had to review a list of western songs and name the western singer(s) who made that song famous example The Gambler sung by Kenny Rogers. Lo and behold, we all experienced a bit of western deja vu as the same team who won the first contest won the second by getting the most songs and singers correct. According to Tom Ulishney and Dave Sheetz, Tom remembered the cowboys and horses from television and Dave s memory just clicked in on the western songs. Each member at the winning table was presented with a 2015 Chance Car ticket prize for each contest. When it came time for happy trails, folks at each table played pass the can of baked beans in conjunction with a western left-right story read by Molly Detwiler. Whoever ended up holding the beans won the table centerpiece a western candle lantern. Rev Up Party Chair Jill Jackson then thanked her committee for their creativity and hard work - Molly and Cris Detwiler, Lee and Chuck Speicher, CJ and Bill Maurer, Trudy Jackson and Mark Jackson. Let s rev-up and roll. Have a great 2015 season!

5 Trudy Jackson models a pair of golden horseshoe glasses giving a Rev-Up thumbs up. Relaxing after enjoying some fine western grub l-r: Mark and Sandy DeFloria, Casper DeFloria and Shirley and Mike Kohan. Al Wirick heard we were having chicken, so he brought one along for the ride. Going through the chow line by the cheesy potatoes and hobo beans, it s l-r, Bob Inhoff and CJ Maurer. Greensburg s Cafe Barista did a great job fix n the grub. Ashley Kuhns knows its time to pass the baked beans - to the left, or right? Molly Detwiler conducts the western trivia games. l-r: Myron Shoaf, Jim Bowman and Jack Wolfe try to decide who was the driver of that horse. If that horse was named Tony it had to be Tom Mix! 5

Nicholls I believe that I had the wrong year in the last article as It should have been I drove the 1939 Ford to a show at Weinels Crossroads held by the Kiski Valley Region. Paul Bell came with an all original Ford A huckster wagon. When I got home I knew that my car needed a motor overhaul. Ms. Wilson called me shortly after I bought the 39 Ford and asked me to stop at her home. So I made the stop, and she was anxious to show me her new car. In the garage covered up, sat a new 1967 VW, black with a red interior. She said it had a heater. Through the years, she would call me and ask me to stop. I never mentioned the VW when I was there, because she usually wanted me to fix a light or something else. She called me in April 1991 and asked me to stop by. I knew that her health was on the decline. She asked me if I wanted the VW. Of course I did, and we agreed on a price. She told me I could even let it in her garage. She signed the title, and with her deposit slip, put it in her bank. Our secretary was a Notary Public and took care of the title. (Things were not as complicated as they are today.) Shortly after that, Ms. Wilson was put in a rest home. I moved the car to a friend s garage. The VW had only 5,989 miles on the odometer. I drove it very little. One day I parked it in Indiana and when I came out to get in a man was waiting by the car. He told me that he had owned the VW garage in Indiana, and that he still had a license plate frame. He asked if I wanted it. A few days later he left it at my house. In 1993 I advertised the VW in the December edition of Hemmings Motor News. I sold the car to a man from Atlanta, Georgia. It was picked up by Passport Transport. Later in a magazine I purchased there was an article on a car show in Atlanta, which included some photos of Ms Wilson s black VW. The article credited the car as the most original VW on the East Coast. The story of its purchase will be in another article. P. S. In the article about the Western PA Region s 50 years of Chance Cars I think someone missed one of the most unusual cars that we raffled off. It was a 1934 Chevrolet Master sedan. It had dual side mounts and knee action shocks. It was a very nice car. 7
