2 A Message from Your President 2014 Officers Mark Jackson, President 133 Alexander Avenue, Greensburg, PA John Kuhns, Sr. Vice President 2339 Raymond Avenue, Latrobe, PA work: home: Craig DeFloria, Treasurer 164 Millersdale Road, Greensburg, PA Mark DeFloria, Secretary 123 Fosterville Road, Greensburg, PA John Ross Kuhns, Publicity 201 Clinton Street, Loyalhanna, PA Dominic Surace, Safety 143 Penn Manor Road, Irwin, PA Western PA Region AACA Monthly Meetings WPR monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month except December and January beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 982, 158 American Legion Road, Latrobe, PA (Pipetown). We start with a business meeting followed by fellowship, a snack and short program. There is also a 50/50 and bonus drawing. If you enjoy old cars please join us. You do not have to own an antique car to belong. For Membership Information Contact any officer or westernparegion@hotmail.com or Visit our website: You don t have to own the Mona Lisa to appreciate fine art. Likewise, one doesn t have to own a Duesenberg or million dollar muscle car to appreciate fine antique automobiles. While we enjoy the television programs featuring the once-in-a-life-time Bugatti barn find and glistening, matching numbers, GTOs, Vettes and Mustangs going before the auction block, the reality is that not too many of us can lay down $100,000 plus for a classic car. (And boy, if we did, would we have the guts to drive it?) However, we can still appreciate the design and engineering of these cars, and the resources it takes to keep their legacies alive. Today, there are more ways to enjoy the antique car hobby than ever before. The quest for perfection continues to receive plenty of attention. The Antique Automobile Club of America, of course, has judging criteria and categories to honor these vehicles - Senior and Grand National Awards. However, now there are the HPOF (Historical Preservation of Original Features) and Drivers Participation Awards, which broaden the opportunities to participate in AACA Meets and activities. One could find a nice, original, low mileage 1989 Plymouth Horizon on Craigslist and pick it up for a few thousand dollars. Then clean it up, take it to an AACA Meet and possibly win an HPOF award. Sure, the 89 Horizon is not a Duesenberg or Bugatti, but it certainly offers a special level of fun just being a part of the antique car AACA picture. I like to parooze Craigslist and look at the cars for sale which have become antiques within the last years to see which ones are the best HPOF buys under $5,000. I ve found some nice ones in that category including a beautiful 1985 Buick Estate station wagon for only $2,500. Since I am currently committed to restoring a 1952 Studebaker, I purchase these cars for fun with my imagination. However, my point is that these cars are out there. They are nice and they are affordable. Although you may be dreaming of that $100,000 muscle car, that $2,500. Buick or Plymouth Horizon may return many priceless memories to you as a driveable antique you can have a barrel of fun with. -- Mark Jackson 2

4 Fun at the 40th Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival 67 Mustang dreams... TWIN LAKES PARK Classy antique cars owned by Western PA Region members stood proudly on the Twin Lakes Park Lower Lake dam breast for visitors to enjoy, as the Fortieth Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival unfolded July 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Region s 1967 Mustang Chance Car was positioned on the corner by the Festival s main entrance. Here many visitors paused to admire it and purchase a ticket from friendly WPR members in hopes of winning the classic red coupe. According to WPR member Dodie Ulishney, We enjoy selling the tickets just to talk with the people and hear their car stories. There are a lot of good Mustang stories out there. Members selling tickets often hear comments like That was my first car. My dad had one of those. I should ve never gotten rid of it. As Ralph and Joanna Shearer carefully pulled their Corvair onto the dam breast prior to their ticket selling shift, WPR President Mark Jackson said to a young Westmoreland County Parks Police Officer who was watching, Yea, that Corvair is a very nice car. It has an air-cooled engine. The young officer responded excitedly, Wow, I ve never seen one of those before! The Region has been displaying antique cars and selling chances to win an antique car at the Festival since the late 1980 s. Although it takes a little maneuvering to get the cars parked on the dam breast, it s the best and only free parking around during the Festival. Many WPR members came out to enjoy the Festival s sights, sounds and flavorful foods, while visitors casually studied their four wheel time machines. Many thanks to all who helped sell Chance Car tickets at the Festival this year, and many thanks to all who brought their cars out to display on the dam breast. Antique cars are an important part of our Arts & Heritage. They are woven into our American fabric with a ribbon of highway. 4 Harvey Eger during a brisk ticket sales moment Checking out Craig DeFloria s 1950 Willys Jeepster. 9 Name That Car Uncle Bill s Car from June July s Car Gary Weigand was the first to correctly identify June s car as a 1955 Oldsmobile. Enjoy that watermellon Gary. Suzanne Heatherington also correctly guessed my Uncle Bill s car. My Uncle Bill was a WWII veteran having served in the Cavalry. When he joined the Cavalry in the 1930 s they were still using horses. They eventually graduated to tanks and he found himself serving under General Patton. When he came home after the war he found employment as an appliance salesman at the Greensburg Sears store where he sold dependable stoves and refrigerators for many years. People knew him as Joe Minster, but to me he will always be my Uncle Bill, one of those special people who touch your lives and you never forget. Mark Jackson, Editor 133 Alexander Avenue Greensburg, PA Phone and FAX: rpmguy2002@yahoo.com Special thanks to the following for sharing their time and talent to help produce this issue: Mark DeFloria, Nancy Vrable I consider myself so very blessed to have a wonderful son who thinks antique cars are cool. Regis has been going to car shows with us since he was a little kid. He listens patiently to my stories and actually seems to enjoy them. He also has developed his own unique tastes in antique cars. In the photo above, Regis flipped over this cute little number at a car show in York, PA a few years ago. It has become the dream car he hopes to own someday yellow with a black interior, or black with a red and white interior. Can you name the make and year of Regis s dream car? Be the first to contact me in person, by phone or rpmguy2002@yahoo.com and win a box of cookies specially hand-picked for you by Regis. (Note: In all fairness, our daughters Trudy and Mary are antique car fans too. Will tell you their favorites next issue.) 9

10 National AACA Meets and Tours By Myron Smith VP Event Planning & Development I ve come to the realization that those of us who attend national AACA events are not doing a good job at home spreading the word of how much fun these AACA events can be. In a nutshell, if you like people, seeing different things, or old cars, you should have a good time at an AACA National event. On the interesting people side of things, we ve made friends by attending national meets from all over the country. At a recent meet I flew from Nebraska to Florida. A friend from Virginia gave me a ride from the airport; I went to supper with folks from North Carolina and someone else from Tennessee joined us. On the plane back home, I was on the same plane with another AACA friend from Louisville KY. The hobby is more than just the cars, but they are the common thread that brings us together. I have been thinking of all the places and things we have seen and I will share a few. We ve been to Metropolis (IL), where you will find Superman and the nearby National Quilt museum in Paducah KY; toured a retired missile site in Kansas; a John Deere Tractor factory in Iowa; an Air Force Base in North Dakota; and another in Cheyenne WY. Have you ever heard of an air force base without runways? There s one in Cheyenne. Also in Wyoming we ve visited a Buffalo Ranch and Cattle Ranch. In Colorado, we ve driven to the top of Pike s Peak, toured Garden of the Gods and some went 1000 ft. underground in a gold mine. Not me though, I m claustrophobic. In the hill country of Texas we have seen exotic animals on the YO ranch, and experienced historic Fredericksburg, TX. In Wisconsin we had a fabulous time with car friends at a place called Old World Wisconsin. I suppose it could be called a living history farm. It shows how early immigrants to Wisconsin from various countries settled the new land. Canyon, TX, home of the second largest canyon in the US, has been a site for a couple of AACA meets. The Palo Duro Canyon is a very interesting place to visit. On the International side we ve been to Paris and Dublin. Of course Paris was in Texas, and the Eiffel tower has a cowboy hat and Dublin is in Ohio. At all of 10 these events there have been an untold number of interesting vehicles to look at. As a result of attending AACA events, we have visited various private auto and auto memorabilia collections not open to the public. We have visited a Fire Truck Restoration facility in Estes Park, CO and an Airplane restoration facility with a WWII museum in Colorado Springs, CO. The AACA meet in Auburn, IN provided an opportunity to visit the fabulous Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum. Everyone s taste in cars is somewhat different. Show days have provided an almost limitless number of vehicles to look at. Of special note to me are: the GM Futurliner, a prototype Graham Hollywood convertible, buses, dump trucks, milk trucks, bakery trucks and even a snow plow. AACA s recognition of unrestored vehicles always provides some interesting vehicles to look at, from amazingly preserved brass era cars to a marvelous late 1920 s Lincoln. A few of my favorites include a 29 Pontiac, a 59 Chevrolet Bel Air and a Model A roadster which still had its original top. Basically, if you cannot find something interesting or fun at an AACA national event, I think you just aren t looking. The Rummage Box
