1 Lake Erie Chapter #3738 May 2013 Vol 4 Issue 4 Sponsored By: Lake Erie Harley Davidson Chester Avon Ohio Director s Chair Mike Cotrufo Inside this issue: Director s Chair 1 Hogwash Director s Chair Ringo Says 2 Activities 3 Welcome to another great riding season from your HOG Chapter Director! I know that 2013 is going to be a great year for riding and I ve already started. Should you have any plans or are making plans to ride out of Ohio, check with the state that you plan to travel to for the latest in road construction. One of my buddy s told me that through Pennsylvania, most roads are under some type of construction and have detours all over the place. Having a sound travel plan is going to be necessary, unless you like to get lost and find new roads and destinations! As I stated at the General Membership meeting, our good friends at our sister HOG Chapter in South Africa are extending an invitation to all of us. This invitation is to travel to South Africa in January 2014 and see the fantastic South African coastline, mountains, whales and a whole lot more! The trip is from January 25, 2014 through February 8, Philip Marsh, the Managing Director, is getting some information together, like pricing that would include airfare and hotel accommodations. This is a trip of a lifetime and once I get some pricing configurations, I ll let you know. If you have an interest, once costs are announced, let me know if you d like to go! We will need a final headcount for travel arrangements. As always, your HOG Chapter is looking for additional volunteers for the upcoming events. Since most of you can t attend the General Membership meetings, where the sign-up sheets are, you can still volunteer online at our HOG website. If you still cannot do this, call Carolyn Liggett, your HOG Volunteer Officer. She will be glad to put your name down for one of our many scheduled events! Also, Matt Cser, your Head Road Captain, is still looking to add more Road Captains this year. We currently have 27, but due to all of the Chapter and dealership LOH 4 5 Membership 4 May - June Activities 5 Minutes 6 & 7 Volunteers 8 Thunder in the Valley 8 Road Captain 9 WebMaster Birthdays 12 Officers 12

That s it for now, so as I always close the Hogwash, let me know what I can do to make your membership experience better. me, stop me in the dealership whenever you see me and I will do my best for you! We are the best Chapter in the country! Anyhow, be cool, ride safe and I ll see you soon Mike Cotrufo Ringo Says - Ron Long HI Everyone, As most of you know, some of us officers went to Milwaukee for Hog Officer Training. We were with about 1200 other officers from around the world. There was 600 from America, 150 from Canada, and 450 from the rest of the world. They were from Scotland, England, Norway, Poland, Denmark, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, South Africa, Japan, Italy, Hungary, Jordan, Indonesia, and many others. We had a really great time with all the international officers that was there. We got some good ideas that we are going to try in the near future. I got some great souvenirs from two different chapters. One was Paris, France and the other was Lebanon. We traded chapter pins. It s a good way to meet people from overseas. One lady had about two dozen pins on her vest form other chapter that she met. On to our chapter news. I have rooms for the Tail Of The Dragon in July. I will get all the info to our webmaster and get it posted on the web site. Also, I have rooms for the 110 TH PARTY in Milwaukee on Aug. 29 thru Sept. 2 nd. If anyone that is going and needs a room, get in touch with me and I will get you the info. As for the dealership events, if you missed any of them so far this year, shame on you. We have had a great time with all of them. The food was good, the crowds were great, and the music was awesome. We have some great events coming up, so keep checking the web site for more details. I would like to THANK all the volunteers that have helped out so far this year. Really great job. As always, Ride safe and have fun. Ron ringo: Long

3 Page 3 Activities - Carolyn Liggett Activities Officer... Greetings Gang! As the sun shines, the riders are out and so are the Activities! As you look at the website and our Google Calendar you will see an array of things to do! After my recent trip to Milwaukee, I learned a lot at H.O.T. aka Harley Officer Training and met a bunch of great officers from around the globe! All the other clubs are as busy as we are with dinner rides, activities and Dealership Events! I heard a lot of new ideas and am excited to pass some on to the club and everyone very shortly. So keep an eye on the Google Calendar and website. Our next Meeting will be a dinner ride (weather permitting). See website for details. Ride Safe, Carolyn.

4 Page 4 Safety Officer Nick Halpin We finally are seeing riding weather so I would like to remind everyone that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Be aware that people in their cars do not always see us bikers. I believe it helps to position yourself in the lane to the left when riding along to be most visible. On coming traffic can not see you on a bike if you are following close to the car in front of you and to the right side of the lane. I also have noticed bikers riding next to a bike in the same lane. This creates a hazard when one of the bikers needs to move to avoid something. Remember the staggered formation, it helps to create the opportunity to move out of the way! So lets get out there. Being safe does not mean we can t have fun! Membership Jason Eustace Hello, all. Hope everything is going well. Just a reminder to keep your National Membership current to avoid a suspension of your local membership. We currently have 242members of which 180 are renewals and 62 New members; 192 full and 50 associate. Ride Safe! Ladies of Harley Connie Heitkamp START THE RUMBLE.. HEAR THE THUNDER! That was our motto at this year s H.O.T. Training in Milwaukee! Getting to hear and talk with over 1,000 officers representing 37 countries was exhilarating. We were involved with classes ranging from Leading a Motivated Chapter, Planning the Year Ahead, Producing Remarkable Events, Revving Up New Members, Making Membership Stick, Running Great Group Rides,. and so on! We are working very hard to ensure we are running our Chapter in the best way possible and it is essential that we keep up to date with changes that go on with H.O.G. DIALOGUE, DISCOVER, DREAM, DESIGN --- AND THEN DELIVER! We, as Ladies of Harley for the Lake Erie Harley-Davidson chapter, have what it takes to implement all the above. I am so pleased and excited that we have new Ladies of Harley members. Each and every one of you brings something new to the club, whether it is volunteering, stories, new ideas for charity work, rides, parties.. it is ALL welcome. Our patch-sewing event was held Saturday May 4 th along with our Cinco De Mayo celebration. I would like to say a special thank you to the ladies that volunteered their precious time out of their weekend to sew patches and also to the runners that delivered the garments and patches to be sewn. The weather cooperated so we had riders all day long.

Lots of things are planned for the coming months and I will need a lot of Volunteers including Road Captains. We gave away out first quarter "Volunteer Reward" and John Gudin will let us know how his dinner was! Who and what will be next??! I'm planning a "Volunteer Only" Event! Details at the June Meeting! So sign up today to help and see what all the fun is about! Thank you Volunteers!! Ride Safe, Carolyn Thunder in the Valley Tom Easterday Thunder In The Valley is held in Johnstown, Pa. Johnstown is a small town about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh. The Rally attracts 100,000+ people each year and literally consumes the entire downtown. During the Rally most of the downtown is motorcycle traffic and parking only. There are a huge number of venders and several stages around town with continuous live entertainment including oldies, rock, country, blues, jazz and comedy. I would describe the rally as having a "relaxed atmosphere". Historically, Johnstown is probably best known for the "Great Johnstown Flood" of 1889 in which over 2,200 people were killed. One of the interesting tourist attractions is the Johnstown Flood Museum. Another attraction is the Johnstown Incline. It is the world s steepest/highest vehicular incline. From the top, you get a great view of the entire city. For more information go to thunderinthevalley. In addition to the Rally, the trip will include a visit to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa. and a visits to area Harley Davidson dealers. The ride will leave Lake Erie Harley Davidson on Thursday, June 20 at 10:00 AM and arrive back at Lake Erie on Sunday, June 23 around 2:00 PM. Since we will be traveling primarily on the Ohio and Pa. Turnpikes, I would suggest having an EZ Pass. We will be staying in the Quality Inn in Somerset, Pa. We have a block of 10 rooms there. The block of rooms will be held till mid-may. However, by that time the motel will be sold out so we will not be able to add rooms. I would suggest reserving a room early. Rooms are $110 plus tax which for "Rally Week" is not a bad rate. To reserve rooms call and identify yourself as part of the Lake Erie HOG.

9 Page 9 Road Captain Matt Cser Road Captain s Ramblings Hi Everybody! We have made it through the winter & we are ready to kick off a great riding season. Thanks to Tom Easterday, I would like to announce our new ride opportunity. During the winter I contacted Tom and asked him if he would be interested in developing a weekday HOG retirees ride. Tom gladly accepted the challenge of this new program. We have set 3 dates for these rides, June 12th, ride to Warther s Museum in Dover, Ohio July 10th, ride to the Covered bridges of Ashtabula, Ohio August 21st, ride to Lehman s Hardware in Dalton,Ohio More info is available on the chapter calendar, on the chapter web page. We believe that the chapter members have been asking for this type of ride, and I am sure that this will generate quite a following. Please check the web page often for updates on all of our rides, we are constantly updating it! All of the rides are on the chapter web page calendar. The first ride of the year is also our first Wednesday evening ride, scheduled for May 15th. We currently have 27 road captains and we are always looking for more, many hands make light work. ALL WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY EVENING RIDES ARE RAIN OR SHINE EVENTS, SO IF THE WEATHER IS NOT GOOD, PLEASE JOIN US IN YOUR CAR! We have some long rides scheduled that require commitments, hotel reservations, & deposits. There will be sign up sheets at the HOG meetings, & as always you can sign up for rides on the chapter web site. We need to get our reservations set A.S.A.P.!! Please remember, all non-members need to sign a release waiver form before all rides. You can get this from your road captains and they will file them. As always if you have any compliments, problems, or ideas that you would like to share with the road captains feel free to contact me at (road.lehog@gmail.com) Till next time, RIDE SAFE! MATT CSER H.R.C.

10 WebMaster David Johnson From Your Webmaster: I am sorry I have been unable to join you at the Chapter Meetings. It s the price I pay to make my Harley payments. But, I haven t forgotten you. NEW FEATURES We recently added a few new features on the website. A Sunshine Committee notification section on the Members Only page and updated our Google Calendar with Dealership Events shown along with the Chapter Events. Sunshine Committee Section Our Sunshine Committee is there to offer encouragement and smiles to our members who may be in need of kind thoughts and prayers. Joann Hamlin has a newly created address where you can submit requests for additions and updates to the list. Please contact her at sunshine.lehog@gmail.com. My sister and I offer our personal thanks to the Sunshine Committee and you for your concerns after the passing of our step-mother. Google Calendar Update When I first began creating Chapter Officer addresses and our calendar at Gmail, I foresaw the usefulness of a consolidated calendar with our events and those of the dealership shown simultaneously. At the time, I created a calendar for the dealership to use as they wished. I am glad to announce that we have recently activated that new feature with the Lake Erie H-D Dealership Events calendar. Take a look at their calendar and the performers scheduled to attend. The dealership is responsible for their event content, though. Any questions about their events should be addressed to them. The Google calendar also has our Chapter Events, Road Captain Rides, Activities Officer and LOH Officer Events posted there as well. For those with Android smartphones, you can use your gmail or google accounts to import our calendar onto your phone calendar so you can see our events live on your phone as you make your plans for each day. Just click the icon on the bottom right of the Google calendar page and follow the prompts. Apple iphone users would need to create a free Google Gmail account to have the calendar on their phone. I don t use Apple, so I welcome suggestions on how those iphone users can get the most use from our calendar on their phone. ADVICE FROM YOUR WEBMASTER Several members and officers have been victims of account spamming. Unknown to them, their accounts had been hijacked and their address book used to send spam messages to everyone they had in them. So I thought I might make a few suggestions: Keep your computer updated regularly. Windows Updates are very important to the security of your system. Apple pushes updates automatically. Update your anti-virus software regularly and scan your system often as well. Don t be lulled into a false sense of security since you only use Apple products. You will be the next victim. Hackers are after you big time.

11 Your smartphone and iphone is at risk. Most users put all their daily information and passwords on their phone. What happens if a virus gets on your phone? Or it is stolen? How hard is it for the thief to get your passwords, checking account access or steal your personal information? Much easier than the general public think. BE CAREFUL!! Make your password HARD for anyone to guess. Computer programs are very good at trying words in the dictionary. PASSWORD, ADMIN, and keep out are the first ones tried. I recommend never using anything you have ever posted as personal information on any social network. Not your birthday, street address, pet s name, parents names, etc. If you must use something besides qn45m-jkk37-b9w2m-88axt-617yt which is a VERY good password, before I gave it to everybody here (DO NOT USE IT NOW), try something like the model number of your blender and the serial number of your laptop, together. Don t use the same password on all the sites you visit. If is ever stolen, hackers find it very easy to try your address and that password on all the major websites. Best practice is to never use a password on more than one site. I use Norton 360 which has a single logon option that remembers my different passwords for each site I visit regularly. Create a secure address that you never give to anyone but your bank, with a very hard to guess password you do not use anywhere else. That way, a hacker cannot use your address to get your password reminder from the bank. Change passwords for all of your accounts if your friends tell you they are getting spam from you. Best practice is to change passwords frequently, though I must use that password logon option in my virus protection to remember all my new ones. NEVER OPEN AN ATTACHMENT. Okay, everybody does, myself included. But before I do, I question the safety of opening it. Especially if comes from a bank I do not use or a FedEx delivery failure when I am not expecting one. First, is it from someone I know? Is it something similar to what I expect that person to send me? Does the message contain language or content that I expect from them? Or is it nothing but a link to some obscure website? And if I am in doubt, I call my friend to see if they sent me an attachment. I am not a security expert and these are my personal suggestions based on my experiences and research. You are responsible for your own security and do not take any of my comments as absolute protection from attack. There is no such thing. Use my suggestions at your own risk. Your mileage may vary. Finally, as always, feel free to contact me with your questions and suggestions. I m here to help you get the most from your membership online experiences. David Johnson Web.lehog@gmail.com
