CTCI chapter 75 Roanoke, Virginia Chartered by the Virginia Corporation Commission September May Meeting Minutes: On May 19, 18 members tore themselves away from the tele and Prince Harry and Megan s wedding to navigate a full pond lake Greenwood parking lot on a rainy weekend for our usual good company and food at our regular meeting at the Greenwood Restaurant. This was the Drive your Thunderbird weekend as proclaimed by CTCI and other national Thunderbird clubs, but it was not to be. Nevertheless, a good turnout and a good time! Also, for the third month in a row, Club President, Richard Garrett, had no bad-health member news! Let s keep it up. Treasurer s Report: There was no formal Treasurer s Report, but Richard did check with Linda Overstreet (who answered her cell phone on the second ring from Costa Rica). As agreed earlier by the club, she did send a $500 check to the Smoky Mountain Club for a full-page program ad and donation for the upcoming National Convention in Knoxville (August 15-19). This is something we have usually done and is a good way for a small club like ours to do our part for CTCI Regionals and Nationals, since we don t have the capacity to host one ourselves. Richard also said that he received a belated thank you letter from the Ronald McDonald House which was the recipient of our annual Christmas Charity gift. This late receipt was very understandable knowing that last winter they were in a turmoil due to a water line break and the subsequent flooding and later clean up. Membership Roster: Susan Bidwell announced that she had completed this year s membership roster, and by the time you read this newsletter you should have an electronic copy. Richard will also have some hard copies with him at future meetings if needed. Susan said that if your information changes during the year, let her know, and she can everyone a correction. Thanks, Susan, for continuing this very useful project for the club

2 Page 2 Star City Motor Madness Events: Bill VanName provided details and forwarded an invitation to the club from Cundiff Automotive to join them to watch the Williamson Road Cruise in on the evening of June 22. This is an ideal spot to see the cars since it is about mid-way on Williamson Road. It is also accessible from Liberty Street, so you don t have to join the cruise in to get there. Cundiff Automotive provides food as well, but while not necessary to attend, bringing a side dish or a dessert would be welcome. Bill said that around 5 p.m. is when it usually starts, and people can leave as they wish via Liberty Street. He also mentioned the Motor Madness Car Show, which has become the largest car show in the area. It is the next day, June 23. Call Bill if you plan to come to Cundiff s. June Meeting is the Ruritan Car Show in Check: This is a reminder that there will be no regular Greenwood Restaurant meeting on June 16. It will be the Ruritan Car Show in Check, an all-day event from 10 to 3. Those traveling from the Roanoke area will marshal behind the Berglund Auto dealership on Rt. 220 South in time to depart by 9:00 a.m. The convoy will go via the Blue Ridge Parkway to Bent Mountain and then to Check. Contact Richard if you do not already have a sign-up sheet for the show. July Meeting at Peaks of Otter: Richard passed around a sign-up sheet for our July 21 lunch outing and meeting at the Peaks of Otter. That convoy will depart from the milepost 106 overlook on the Parkway at 11:15. If you have not signed up, do let Richard know, since it is important for him to make an appropriate reservation at the restaurant. There will be no regular meeting in July at the Greenwood on July 21. August Meeting: There will be a regular meeting at the Greenwood on August 18. However, remember the three other August events on the busiest Thunderbird month of the year for us. First, there is Street Scene in Covington on Saturday, August 4. Then comes the CTCI Regional in Knoxville from August 15-19, followed by the Oldies Weekend at Pipestem is August The only overlap is the National with the regular meeting. Join CTCI Go to: Call:

3 Page 3 September 15 Meeting at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant in Pain Bank: Richard also started a sign up list for the event even though it is far out. However, if you plan to go, it helps Richard to know how many there will be since he will be making a lunch reservation for this outing as well. Marshaling plans will be determined later. No Greenwood meeting this month. October 13 Meeting at the Ruritan Community Center in Thaxton: Three differences here: No Greenwood meeting; it is the 2 nd Saturday in October rather than the 3 rd ; and it will be a potluck event with entertainment. More details to follow. In sum, we have a nice number of easily accessible driving events this summer, so we hope to see as many of you as possible with you Thunderbirds. The weather, of course, will be perfect for all of them!!! 5 Volume 43 Number 6 From the President: The good news is the drought is over! With all the rain that we have had in the last few weeks we shouldn t have to worry about a drought for quite a while. Let s just keep our fingers crossed that the dry weather will stay around long enough to let us complete our planned events for the summer season. The next event will be the Ruritan Car Show at Check Elementary School. We will meet behind the Berglund dealership on Rt. 220 in time to leave at 9:00 am and caravan south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the top of Bent Mountain and exit on to Rt. 221 to the Check Elementary School. This will serve as our official June club meeting. Next up is the annual Star City Motor Madness. The Cruise-in will be on June 22nd along the usual Williamson Road route. The folks at Cundiff Automotive have invited the club to join them in a potluck supper at their location. You are asked to bring an entrée or desert to share with the group. This is an excellent location to set up chairs inside their fenced in lot to view the steady stream of vehicles of every description that will be cruising up and down Williamson Road. Richard Garrett Page 5 Chocolate Z Cake Ingredients: 2 ½ cups flour ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa, preferably Dutch-process 1 tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 ½ cups sugar ½ cup butter, softened ½ cup vegetable oil 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 large eggs ½ cup buttermilk, (can sub. sour cream or yogurt ) 3 cups shredded zucchini 6 oz. chocolate chips Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 325 deg. F. Lightly grease a 9 X 13-inch pan or six miniloaf pans 2. In a large bowl, sift together the first six ingredients. Set aside. 3. Ina large mixing bowl, beat together the sugar, butter, oil & vanilla until smooth. 4. Beat in the eggs. 5. Alternately add the buttermilk and the flour mixture. 6. Fold in the zucchini & chocolate chips and spoon batter into the prepared pan(s). 7. Bake until the top springs back and looks set, about 40 to 50 minutes for a 9 X 13-inch pan, or 30 to 40 minutes for mini-loafs.

Dept. of Totally Useless but interesting Information In the month of June we commemorate the D Day invasion of France that began to turn the tide of World War 2 toward victory for the United States and its allies. Another factor that helped to lead to the victory over Hitler and his Nazi s was the enormous production of aircraft by the industries of the United States.. From 1941 through 1945, American industry delivered more than 276,000 military aircraft. That number was enough not only for US Army, Navy and Marine Corps, but for allies as diverse as Britain, Australia, China and Russia. In fact, from 1943 onward, America produced more planes than Britain and Russia combined. And more than Germany and Japan together This level of production meant that on average U.S. industry produced 6.3 airplanes every hour of every day for five years.
