Can be a single cake or a sandwich cake. A jar of pickled? Choice of entrant Collage. Art made from Fruit & Veg. Beware door to door sales The Probation Trust & North Yorkshire Police urges residents to remain vigilant about bogus door to door sales. There have been reports that people are posing as ex-offenders or offenders seeking to sell products or services door to door and claim to be working on a project backed by the Probation Service. York and North Yorkshire Probation Service operates no scheme of this nature. Anyone who is approached by a person claiming to be working door to door under the authority of York and North Yorkshire Probation Trust should be reported to North Yorkshire Police on 101 giving as much detail as possible. North Yorkshire Police adds that Pedlars certificates can only be issued by the Chief of Police and in majority of cases bogus door to door sellers do not carry these types of certificates. Scorton War Memorial Institute Lottery You ve got to be in it to win it. Yearly membership only 12 with monthly prize draws and annual grand prize of 100. Contact Ian Threlfall

4 Neighbourhood Watch new members needed Neighbourhood Watch is a long established countywide voluntary organisation based on the simple philosophy of "getting together with your neighbours to reduce local crime and disorder to make your neighbourhood a safer and better place to live, work and play". It is about building community spirit and good relations, bringing together local people with common goals, tackling crime and disorder and keeping an eye out for one another and on each others property, working together as the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood, picking up and taking action on anything that could cause concern or worry. It is not about being a 'nosy neighbour' but about being a good citizen and caring for and supporting your community. Recent UK wide research established that in 79% of cases, Neighbourhood Watch was effective at reducing crime compared to areas where no scheme existed and that four out of five people not already in a scheme would join if one was one in their area. As well as reducing crime there are other benefits of joining a the scheme, including opportunities to learn about crime prevention, home and personal security and most insurance companies offer discounts to members of recognised schemes. We all like to save money! The most effective schemes are those working in close partnership with Police and other agencies. The sharing of information about activities in a neighbourhood such as recent crime trends, bogus callers, anti-social behaviour or vandalism, together with details on personal and property security and any current local initiatives; provides the opportunity for members to take appropriate precautions to avoid becoming victims themselves and, through their increased vigilance, obtain and provide useful information to the police. North Yorkshire Police use the Ringmaster system to share such information. If you would like to join Scorton s Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and join Ringmaster, please contact PCSO 5360 Gavin Dobson on telephone number 101 or gavin.dobson@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk Gavin Dobson PCSO 5360 Coming soon to a back field near you (officially known as Jubilee Green within Glebe Meadows!) Climbing net Nest swing Bouncy rocker Contour play Well done to the Parish Council for gaining this funding.

5 Bridge Update As you will have noticed work on the bridge has begun. The north elevation and northern barrel sustained severe damage during the September 2012 floods resulting in a large proportion of the north elevation and the entire northern barrel being washed away. The Engineer of the new bridge has sent word that the work will be completed by 8th September. The work currently being undertaken is: Excavation of the fill over the arch and installation of new foundations. Installation of flood relief pipes through side walls. Construction of a new arch and walls to replace the collapsed section, built to existing dimensions. Replace fill over structure and resurfacing. Remove the temporary bridge and road (and traffic lights!) and reinstate the area. Please look at the noticeboard by the Post Office for further updates. Tired of the Kids? Want a night out? Baby Sitting Services in Scorton Call James Murray Footpath And Bridleway Walks around Scorton Saturday 13th July Saturday 3rd August Saturday 7th September Meet at the bus shelter at 9.45am (bring some money for bus fares in case we decide to take the bus out and walk back. 6 Wind Vane Dedication Saturday 7th September at 6pm You may have noticed the large boulder with a plaque attached at the end of Banks Lane - there will be a restored wind vane there too very soon. The wind vane is the last remaining piece of RAF Scorton ( ) and it is wonderful to now have a monument in Scorton that we can all be proud of and to remember the brave people who served there. All of the hard work has been completed by a group of volunteers who have been most generous, and many donations have been received also. The dedication of the wind vane and plaque which commemorates RAF Scorton ( ) will take place at 6pm on 7th September at the wind vane and refreshments will be served by the Parish Council afterwards in the Institute.. Everyone is welcome. Home Start volunteers required Home-Start Richmondshire going from strength to strength! You may be aware that Home-Start Richmondshire began in 2010 and that we are part of the largest family support charity, Home-Start UK, in the country. Our fantastic volunteers visit families in their own homes for 2-3 hours a week to offer a friendly helping hand to families who are experiencing stresses or difficulties and have a child under the age of 5. We aim to help the parents to cope better for the benefit of the children. We do all sorts of things such as helping the family to get out to activities; chatting about their concerns; playing with the children; helping the family to access services; helping them to cook a healthy meal or just helping them to go out to the park or for a walk. The support is very much appreciated and needed by the families who often have no other support. We are delighted to say that the National Lottery has recognised the value and importance of the help that we offer to families by giving us a grant to continue our work. So we now need more volunteers to support the families of Richmondshire. Please can you offer 2-3 hours a week to help? We offer an excellent training course together with full support. If you can help a local family please ring Kerry Ellis on to chat about being a Home-Start volunteer. Thank you. Scorton Parish Council Councillors: Danny Jones; Ian Threlfall; Jenny Harper (Chairman); Angela Heywood, Ian Robinson, Linda Hull.
