1 PICTON PRESS Summer 2010 Picton and District Sports Gymkhana & Horticultural Show On Saturday 17th July it will be the 61st Picton Show, lets hope that the weather is better this year! If your new to the show its not just a horse show, the tent houses Homecraft, Handicraft and Children s classes (don t forget the Scarecrow) as well as our Hay and Corn classes. Then there are Children s Sports and Fancy Dress. The dog show is for fun, nothing serious ranging from cutest puppy to the dog race. If you want to enter your baking, fruit, vegetables, craft item or photo in the show you have to enter by Wednesday 14th of July, its hectic enough in the morning when you deliver your entries between 9-11 am without taking entries as well. The Picton parish photo class is under threat so come on Picton residents put a photo taken in the parish in. The Children s tent classes are free to enter as are the sports and fancy dress, although we also need the tent entries on Wednesday, you can turn up for the sports on the day and the dog show entries are also on the same day. Between classes you can look at the side stalls and block test or enjoy an ice-cream and the Hurworth Hunt Hounds will be there at about 3.45 pm. Refreshments and afternoon teas will be provided by Farmers Grill and a bar is also available. Entry to the show is 3 for adults and children go free. You can get your schedule either by downloading it from:/-picton-show Or from Judith (Four Wynds), Marian (Poplars Farm) or Sandra (Byres End), or any other committee member. ST. GEORGE S DAY St. George, the Patron Saint of England who famously killed a dragon. This truly English day was celebrated at the Station Hotel with bunting and flags decorating the pub and bar. Traditional English food was served and the evening was a huge success. It was nice to see so many Picton residents raise the English flag to mark St. George s Day. Inside this issue: Neighbourhood Watch 2 Dates For Your Diary 3 Kidz Krazy Korner 4 Events And Notices 5 Recipe Corner 6 Plus many other articles
2 If you see/hear anything suspicious dial 999 At last the summer, drinks on the patio, barbecues, holidays and... THIEVES! Most of us will soon be going off on a well earned break, don t let a thief go on holiday with your hard earned cash. Make sure your property and outbuildings are secure along with tools and ladders, cancel any deliveries, use timers on lights. Try and get a friend, relative or neighbour to keep an eye on your property while you are away. Give them a key if you can and a contact number. Ask them: Push letters, circulars etc through the letterbox out of view. Move parcels. Check doors and windows regularly. If you think someone has been in or tried to get in, call the Police immediately. It helps to make the property looked lived in and if someone can draw curtains and put lights on/off, washing on the line etc all the better but don t ask for or expect too much, anything is better than nothing and you will enjoy your holiday that much more knowing a watchful eye is being kept. Have a good holiday Jim Ackrill Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator The BBQ will go ahead as usual in the tent after the show, same format as you ve been used to (hopefully without the wellies), a steak BBQ, disco and of course a bar. If your new here there is a high demand for tickets so get yours early. This years charity is Cancer Research UK and tickets will be 16 from Jayne (Station Hotel), Sandra (Biers End) or Betty (Village Farm). PICTON PRESS TEAM We would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Picton Press Newsletter Team/Communications Committee to you all. Marian Hugill Cecilia Cordova - Web Master Carole Ackrill Karen Curran Jenny Cookson-Teall Anna Kidz Krazy Korner Your comments would be very welcome along with new members to the team. If you have any suggestions for items that you would like to see included in future editions please inform one of the team. Our next edition is due out in September 2010 Dogs & Cattle Cases last year highlighted a problem with dogs among cows. A cow with a calf sees a dog as a threat to her calf, often the dog will hide behind its owner. It is probably wise NOT to enter a field with a dog if there are calves present but if a cow attacks let the dog go, and send it away from you. REFUSE COLLECTIONS This is Sixpence he disappeared from Poplars Farm in the Autumn of We assumed he was dead until he turned up for a very short visit one day, when this picture was taken. He is a very friendly neutered Tom and I am interested in where he is now making his home. I know I won t be able to persuade him to come back but I d like to know anyway. So if you can provide this information please contact Marian on or m.hugill@fwi.co.uk Just a reminder that we have two bank holidays coming up on 31st May & 31st August which normally means that the bins are collected a day later. The black bin will be collected on Friday 4th June 2010 and the green bin and blue box will be collected on Friday 3rd September For further information please contact:: or Page 5
6 RECIPE CORNER DATE CRUNCHIES Ingredients 175 g butter, plus extra for greasing 175g self raising flour 175g semolina 75g golden caster sugar 225g pitted dates (chopped) 1 tbsp thin honey 1tbsp lemon juice Pinch of ground cinnamon Makes 12 Preparation Time 20 minutes Cooking Time minutes METHOD Grease a shallow 18cm (7 inch) square baking tin. Mix the flour and semolina together in a bowl and make a well in the centre. Put the butter and sugar into a pan over a low heat until the butter has melted and the sugar dissolved, then stir into the flour mixture. Press half of this mixture into the prepared tin. Meanwhile, put the dates into a pan with the honey, 4 tbsp water, the lemon juice and cinnamon. Stir over a low heat until soft and fairly smooth. Spread the date filling over the mixture into the tin, then cover with the remaining semolina mixture and press down lightly. Bake at 190 degrees C (fan ovens 170 degrees C) gas mark 5 for minutes until golden. Cut into bars, then leave in the tin until cold. Lift out the bars and store in an airtight container. VARIATION: APRICOT CRUNCHIES Use chopped apricots instead of the dates. Puree the apricot filling if preferred in a blender or food processor. This gorgeous recipe was sent in by Liz Robinson, who makes it regularly. ENJOY Has anyone got a recipe that they would like to share, if so please send it to Carole Ackrill, Easedale, Picton. Page 6
