1 Gold Wing Road Riders Association Northeast Region B, Maryland District, Chapter B Few Miles for FUN By T the Bee His quest for every district rally is close to being over. It s been awhile since I have been along, not by my choice. (I ve been left behind on purpose) He kindly brought me along this time and I got visit some of his family in addition to two rallies. He has a new bike now and this prevented me from opening the saddle bag, so I didn t see any of the road. Honda changed the locking mechanism, I needed my flashlight and I didn t pack it. Excuse me I digress. Fortunately riding with him I won t be in the saddlebag long. Our trip to the Wyoming Rally in Sundance only took two days. The WY rally was one of the most laid back rallies I have attended. He told me that there were only 48 members registered for the rally. There were no seminars scheduled for the weekend. There was only one guided ride. There were maps available at registration if you wanted to go on a ride. Surprisingly he did not do any real riding. I asked why, he told me that when he was out here a couple of weeks earlier for the NE/SD rally he and George rode about 250 miles around this same area. He spent most of this rally talking with folks. He participated in a poker walk called Downtown Stroll. They mis-titled this event because a couple of locations you had to ride to get to, they were more than two miles from the start. It was too hot to be walking that distance. The town of Sundance claim to fame is it held Harry Longabaugh in jail for 18 months, longer than anyone else before he escaped. When he met Robert Parker aka Butch Cassidy, Butch asked him where he was from and Harry responded Sundance (he had just escaped). Butch gave him the name Sundance Kid. And as they say the rest was history. Just before closing ceremonies, the group part in a historic tour of the town called Sip and Walk. Guides dressed in western garb and told the story of Sundance. As you walked you sipped wine, beer, root beer or sarsaparilla plus you got refills at various watering holes. The highlight for me was the ride to Devil s Tower. This was the only guided group ride scheduled. My first time there, at least his third (his memory is failing). It is an interesting rock formation. The vertical striations up the side of the Tower makes it look like multiple columns stacked together. The park ranger who briefed the group on the Tower had some interesting tribal folklore to explain why the rock face looks the way it does. You find several of the stories on line. We also had ice cream while we were there. He told me on the ride back he had never (Continued on page 7) Vol. XXVII Issue 8 August 2017

3 Notes from the Educator The (Tire) Pressure Is On! Page 3 A friend of mine recently suggested that I write my next newsletter article about the differences in the accuracy of tire pressure gauges and since I already knew that the biggest cause of tire failure is under inflation I felt this would be a worth while subject to write about. I went to the internet and started to do a little research and found out there are basically only 2 types of air pressure gauges and they are analog and digital. I am sure that most of you have seen the stick or pen type tire gauge and the round face tire gauge. Both of these gauges are analog and were the benchmark for more than 70 years in the automotive industry, however as you know digital is replacing analog everywhere you look from electronics to TV reception, well tire gauges are no exception. Car and Driver Magazine and other independent testing labs around the world have been conducting tests for the past 3 years and have determined that digital tire gauges are the most accurate. In some cases the mechanical analog tire gauges were off by as much as 15 psi. That s a huge plus or minus ranges for a tire gauge. Most digital tire gauges have plus or minus of.05 psi over a range of psi. Wow 15 pounds off, now that concerned me cuz I know how important it is to keep the tires on our motorcycles at the proper pressure. An error of a couple of pounds is a bad thing. So this potential of a 15 pound error scared me enough to go right out and purchase a couple of digital tire pressure gauges (one to keep on the bike and one to keep in the truck). I chose a medium priced gauge (around $15.00) that is supposed to be within.5 psi accurate. Then I had a brilliant idea! Bang! One flash and my mind was gone but I thought since I have all three types of gauges in my garage why not conduct my very own and very unscientific experiment. Here are my readings: Pen type tire gauge: 40 psi Round face tire gauge: 40.5 psi Digital gauge #1: 37.5 psi Digital gauge #2: 37.5 psi What this means is I have been running my tires consistently 2 to 2.5 psi low. Not a good thing but at least now I have more accurate gauges and will be riding safer in the future and riding safer is what its all about! Well now that we know which is the best type of gauge lets talk a little about how to use them. Did you know what the best time of the day to check the pressure in your motorcycle tires is when the tires are cool before they get warmed up? Why? Well, the answer is a little long and scientific so being the unscientific guy that I am; I took their word for it. I know some of you don.t have air compressors at home and have to ride to a service station to put air in your tires so how do you insure that you are getting the cool pressure? (Continued on page 5) (Continued from page 2) Sunday, September 24 th Ride for Kids, Ellicott City, MD: The Baltimore/Washington Ride for Kids (Prediatric Brain Tumor Foundation) Event will be held at Turf Valley Resort, 2700 Turf Valley Rd, Ellicott City, MD. 4 From Your Assistant Chapter Director On July 6 I departed Laurel, MD to meet up with members from MD-B (Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, and Darryl Fielder) and MD-I (Stanley and Shelley Greene) at the Cracker Barrel in Manassas, Virginia for breakfast as we made our way to the Virginia District Rally, Rally in the Valley, Roanoke, Virginia. We were all to make our own way there to arrive by 9 a.m. However, after I got into my vehicle the heavens opened up and it started raining hard non-stop. My plan was to depart at 8 a.m. for an hour ride. Thirty minutes into the trip, I realized I wasn t going to get there in time so I called Grayson to be my human GPS to get me through the city away from the beltway. I explained where I was and he steered me through the city. I stopped at the first gas station near the Cracker Barrel. The vehicle in front of me there was Stan & Shelley Greene. It seems everyone was arriving late. I got to the restaurant at 9:30 a.m. I was greeted by Darryl watching the rain come down while rocking in one of Cracker Barrel s rocking chairs. Shortly, thereafter, Stan & Shelley and Bruce & Regina arrived. It didn t stop raining until we were almost in Roanoke, Virginia. Rally in the Valley is a great place to take seminars and make and renew friendships. Once we arrived, we met up with William and Barbara Anderson, MD-B, and Steve & Linda Norby, MD-I. On Saturday, I saw Cliff Harris and Eric Chatman, before we pulled out heading to the Region B Fun Day. Our plan was to drive up to Pennsylvania to participate in the Fun Day and Region B Selection Process on Sunday. The Anderson s and the Norby s decided to join us on our trek to Fun Day. It was a beautiful sunny day on Saturday. Steve & Linda were the only ones on two-wheels. All the riders were now regretting that they didn t ride to Rally in the Valley so they could enjoy the ride up to Pennsylvania. When we arrived at the hotel in Pennsylvania, we were met by Charles & Shirley Dorsey, Kirk Williams, Dennis Johnson, and Charley Fogg. Ken Trass rode up on Sunday to participate in the day s activities. We were also joined by MD-I and MD-J. Sunday was a beautiful day to have the Region Couple of the Year Selection process. This is the first time that I know of where the Selection process was on a Sunday and at a park. Charles & Shirley Dorsey did an outstanding job representing the Maryland District. I am very proud of them!!! There were three couples participating: Charles & Shirley Dorsey, MD; Dan & Mary Costello, NJ; and John & Glenda Lieb, PA. Dan & Mary Costello were selected at the 2017 Region B Couple of the Year. Also in attendance supporting the Maryland District were MD-I and MD-J. Way to go Charles & Shirley!!! Bob & Julie A Hearn will be representing Region B at the International Couple Selection process at Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas at the Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel and Convention Center, August 29 September 2. They would love to see you in the audience. It is still not too late to register for Wing Ding and support Bob & Julie at the Selection Process. The Maryland District is wishing them all the best!! July s Chat-n-Chew was at Longhorn Steak House in Bowie, MD. We had a good turn out with Charles & Shirley Dorsey, Kirk & Maxye Williams, Bruce Hill, Grayson Dixon, Kenneth & Diedre Trass, Darryl Field Fielder, Grayson Dixon, and I. Chapter Garage Meeting was held at Dennis and Charley s home on July 22. Thanks to them for the snacks. Everyone was working on their bikes in preparation for the Canadian trip. We did run into a bad storm so work on the bikes stopped for a while. We had a good turnout for this event with Charles Simms (it was good to see him again), Dennis Johnson Jr, Kirk & Maxye Williams, Charles & Shirley Dorsey, Darryl Fielder, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Dennis Johnson, Charley Fogg, and I. Sunday, 7/23/17, the Chapter participated in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation s Re-enactment Buffalo Soldier s Ride. Mike Beaver s from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Upcoming Events: Saturday, 8/19/17, Chapter Gathering and Motorcycle Ride after directly afterwards. Road Captain is Kenneth Trass. Tuesday, 9/5/17, Chat-n-Chew, Famous Dave s, Capital Centre Boulevard, Largo, MD Thursday, 9/7/17, Internment Julia Malson, Departing J.B. Funeral Home, 7474 Landover Road, Landover, MD at 7:30 a.m. The family is requesting a Motorcycle Escort. Please wear your Chapter colors. 5 From Your Assistant Chapter Director (cont) Page 5 (Continued from page 4) Saturday, 9/16/17, Chapter Gathering. Directly afterwards we will be departing to attend Maryland Chapter I s 25th Anniversary Picnic, Tilghman Lake Park, LaPlata, MD 20646, $17 due by 9/6/2017. Sunday, 9/24/17, Baltimore-Washington Ride for Kids, Turf Valley Resort, 2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City, MD. Registration is from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and the ride begins at 9:30 a.m. rain or shine. Please plan to come out to join the Chapter. Lillian Cruz Maryland District Couple of the Year Coordinator Maryland B Assistant Chapter Director Grand Master Tour Rider Look twice and save a life!!! Notes from the Educator Tire Pressure (cont) (Continued from page 3) Before I had an air compressor in my garage I would check my air pressure at home and then when I got to the service station I would check the tires again and then add the number of pounds that I was low when I first checked them. Now that we know when to check our tire pressure and what gauge to use how the heck do we know what the proper tire pressure is? I suspect you can get several different answers to this question. I know the Motorcycle Owner s Manual (MOM) will give you the specs for the stock tires, however since most of us have moved on from the stock tires I have been a little leery using the MOM for my source so I have just simply asked the dealer/installer what I should keep in my tires. In my case I run Dunlop Elite IIIs and have been told to run 41 psi in both the front and back tires. This concludes our discussion about tire gauge accuracy. The best tire gauges are digital. You should always check your tires air pressure in the morning when they are cool or before driving heats them up. You should check your MOM and/or your tire dealer/installer for the correct air pressure. Article taken from the Virginia District Times June 2008 Newsletter Joke of the Month Long to Live This biker lady has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a near death experience. Seeing God, she asked, Is my time up? God said, No you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live. Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a facelift, liposuction and tummy tuck. Since she had so much more time to live, new roads to ride, she figured she might as well look nicer. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While riding her motorcycle home, she was run into by a delivery truck and killed. Arriving in the front of God, she demanded, I thought you said I had another 40+ years? How come you didn t pull me out of the path of that truck? God replied, I didn t recognize you.

6 Words From Our District Directors What an interesting month July turned out to be and it s not over yet. By now I hope you have had the time to read the NEWSFLASH from GWRRA (included in this newsletter) that came out on July 17th. The President of GWRRA and the International Team have been working on ways to make GWRRA better. After corresponding with some of the Districts and many of the Chapters over the last 6 months it has been decided that there needs to be some changes in the Officer structure within GWRRA. We do not have answers to all of your questions, but shortly we should receive a list of Q&A from the GWRRA Director s through six (6) different Zoom calls with District Directors a couple of weeks ago. We are hopeful that many of your question will be answered in the Q&A s when they come. We will have a District meeting to discuss the changes and how we re going to implement them. A clarification of the organization flow chart. If you ve noticed, the horizontal line connecting the staff members to the directors is missing. All staff members will be selected/appointed by the Directors and are responsible to the Directors. We attended the Region B Fun Day after traveling from Rally in the Valley in Roanoke, VA we had a fun time at both. The Region Couple selection was held at the Region Fun Day and our District Couple, Charles and Shirley Dorsey participated. Although, they did an outstanding job in the selection process Dan and Mary Costello from New Jersey were selected. Congratulations to them and all the couple. We still have a few things coming up that will put a smile on your faces too! Don t miss an opportunity to have some fun and attend some of these events. Aug 4-5 ARC Hagerstown, MD Aug 3-6 Region L Rally, Summerside, PEI Aug TRC Hagerstown, MD Aug 29-2 Wing Ding 39, Grapevine, TX * Sep NY/NJ Bi-State Rally, Hope Lake Lodge, Cortland, NY Wing Ding is here, and Region B is responsible for prize ticket sales. For those who will be there, please plan to spend a few hours helping out. You will get to meet people from across the U.S. and around the world. There should be a good time and you have a chance to make many new friends. ONE LAST NOTE: The weather has been very hot so remember to stay hydrated when riding in the heat and be safe out on the road. Please check in on your elderly neighbor as well. If at all possible please plan to attend and support your Region Couple of the Year Robert and Julie A`Hearn as they participate in the International Couple of the Year selection Page 6 RIDE AWARE Share the Road Twice save a Life

7 Few Miles for FUN (cont) (Continued from page 1) seen so many deer along the road. In one meadow there were easily over 100 deer hanging out. Our hosts were Rich and Darlene Doetz, District Directors. To kill the 12 days between rallies, he did some family and friend visits. First stop was Ft. Laramie, WY. We stopped there to visit with a member, Steve, he met at the NE/SD rally after going to a Buffalo Soldier Memorial in Cheyenne. Steve gave him a tour of the Army post Ft Laramie and a couple of other historic sites. Steve showed him Register Cliff, where people on the Oregon Trail would carve their names in the rock. The oldest name he found was dated He said it was quite interesting bolstering his old west knowledge. We then traveled to Hobart, IN where his brother Herman resides. I got to meet several of his family members. Then we were off to Streetsboro, OH to hang with one of his best friends Greg and his wife Marise. He had dinner with a H. Hudson and his family to whom he was a Big Brother to back in the early 80 s. They had not seen each other seen or spoke to each other since 84. It was a great reunion for them both. We were then off to Franklin, MI (near Detroit) to visit his niece and her family for a couple of days. Believe it or not he actually took his time getting back to Salmon, ID for the Idaho Rally. He took three nights to get there, 3 easy 700 mile days. The town and our hotel, Stagecoach Inn sits on the Salmon River and the attraction is white water rafting. The river had a great flow while we were Page 7 there. The Inn was filled water thrill seekers. There was only 42 registered for this rally. He commented that back on the east coast we would seriously consider canceling a chapter fundraiser if not the district rally with that level of participation. Real friendly folks in the town. He told me that he got two adult beverages bought for him at one of the downtown bar & grill establishments. This town s claim to fame is that it s the birthplace of Sacajawea (Lewis & Clark fame). You got wonder how can they make that claim when the town did not exist when Lewis & Clark wandered through the woods here. Here again there was not much training, a road captain course was all they had. There were a couple of guided rides, a people s choice bike show and light parade. The entertainment at the closing ceremonies was a high school young man who played the ukulele, guitar and sang. Evidently he had performed at Wing Ding also (year not mentioned). The kid was good. Overall he said the three rallies this summer were the most laid back he had been to and with the new direction of GWRRA as stated by the president; they are right in line with ride first and training when we get to it. Our host were Bill & Nancy Lea. We would have been on our way home after the rally but we got new direction from a higher power. When we were headed to ID, Deidre suggested since he was just going home he could swing through Atlanta and hang out with her at the convention she was attending. I was not in favor of it but to him it s just somewhere to ride so we did. Two days on the road and we were there. He could at least let me out of the room so I could see the sights. After a three day visit we went home.
