DIRECTOR S CORNER Hello Stingers! 5 August Chat-n-Chew; We (15 of us) met and had a good meal at the Rio Buffet on Branch Ave. We had various conversation topics going on during the meal with focus being on the NY/NJ Bi-State Rally and the Region K Rally in Canada. As we leaned back in our chairs and things were winding down Lee Tresvant called everyone to attention and made the announcement that her and Michael A were moving to the sunshine state of Florida within a couple of months (Oct timeframe). Yes, there was a brief moment of silence and some jaws hit the ground but nothing but happiness was extended to the both of them. We tried to deter them with stories of snakes, alligators, heat, taxes and so on but that did not work, they had a answer for everything (they obviously did their homework). I asked about their trike and Michael told me it finally made it to the shop and it SHOULD be ready by October so he could ride it down there, we also found out that Michael is RETIRING in October (throw your hands up). Michael & Lee, the HIVE truly appreciates all that you have done and your representation as our Couple of The Year has been second to none. Remember, you will always be STINGER s and the vest stay in tact! You will have to purchase new vest if you join another chapter down there, that s the Chapter B rule (I just made that up Lol). Thank you, and the HIVE wishes you both happiness and prosperity August NY/NJ Bi-State Rally Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Dennis & Charlie. Got a little late start but the ride up was wonderful. We were at our final destination by 9pm and I think they staged a welcoming committee for us because when we got there, there were about 15 GWRRA members in the carport area hanging out and cheering as we pulled up ( we felt like a rock stars) and I had to perform a little light show. The guy that won the light show parade earlier came up to me and said (you would have won if you were here), oh well, we got settled in the hotel and called it a night. Breakfast the next morning several of us made our way down to the 4 vendors that were set up in the parking lot. We hung out at the Gerbings Heated Clothing distributor and Dennis & Charlie picked up some items, and Bruce and I got some heated gloves after some negotiations. Later that day we went on ride to the Chatter Box which is a popular restaurant in the area and had a fantastic meal. We were honored to have the manager literally have lunch with us as he was showing us different riding routs (he went and got a map) and we ended up taking a ride to the highest point in NJ (High Point National Park). Continued onnect page... 2

Continued from page one We made it back to the hotel within and hour and got ready for the Banquet and 50s Dance that started at 5pm. The meal was superb and everyone was decked out in their 50 s gear and who shows up (ELVIS), yes, Elvis was in the building and he really got the party started. Charlie and Dennis share a moment with Elvis! I finally caught up with you! Say CHEESE! 3

At the Chatter Box Restaurant posing in front of the Bat Mobile! We had good weather on the way back and we made a pit stop at the Sweet Willows ice cream shop and enjoyed a few scoops of ice cream. The HIVE will be coming back up this way soon and hopefully we get treated with some fresh right out of the machine ice cream like before. 14 August Region K Rally (Canada) The morning started off a little brisk but the skies were clear as I arrived on time for our 6:00am departure. Once I arrived at RIPS not a sole was there except for Hampton Conway making a cameo appearance so we talked about the Washington Nationals among other things before Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Stan & Shelly Green, Charles & Shirley Dorsey, and Ken Trass made their presence known. We started our journey (after Prayer) north by way of no tolls and the scenery was awesome the whole way up. After about 2 hours we made a breakfast stop in Delaware at a Crackle Barrel (I need to take stock in them) for a hearty breakfast. After a few more hours on the road we stopped off in New York where we had planned to stay the night. We were able to meet with a friend of Stan s from boot camp and his wife John & Laura Dutcher at the Walmart. The ladies made a dash inside the Walmart to buy some extra clothing as the temperatures started to fall the farther north we traveled, we also took on a monsoon for about 15 minutes before the sunshine parted the skies. We strolled about 2 blocks down the road and had a delicious dinner before getting some well deserved shuteye for the night. The next morning we got started about 11:00am with Canada being our next destination. Continued... 4

Cont. We took some back roads and did a little off-roading (literally) for about a 2 mile stretch to the boarder with some unbelievable views. Once we got to the boarder we noticed that there we no guards at the booths so we all thought to ourselves (setup) but we kept on over the bridge and the booths were awaiting us on the other side. Once we got through customs we headed down the road about 5 miles to the NavCentre Hotel. Once we figured out the maze to our rooms (they go by color code) and got the opportunity to unpack and sit down for a moment, we all ended up downstairs for free pizza in the ballroom where we were met with open arms by our Canadian family. The next morning they had several rides scheduled but a storm front was coming through so we all decided (less Ken Trass) that we would stay put and have some maintenance performed by a Honda vendor that was there, Paul Walsh (GoldwingKing.com). Bruce and Stan needed some headlight work done, Charles and Shirley got some Bling for the Wing, and I also got some Bling for the Wing. We found out while talking to Paul why Charles was having problems keeping up while going up hills, he had synthetic oil in his GL1500 (a no, no on the 1500 s) and his dip stick was not securely put back on when they did his oil change. The rain showers showed up as expected around noon and it rain throughout the day and partially into the night. Later that night they held the Mice Trap Games (hilarious) you had to be there in the environment to really understand it topped off with folks dressed up in their Sunday best super hero outfits. We all retired about 11:00pm for an early morning rise to head home. Ken and I departed around 6:30am for our direct trip back home where as the others were leaving a little later with a possible layover in NY. We all made it home safely with a few issue along with way. Ken Trass, Charles & Shirley Dorsey, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Stan & Shelly Greene, and myself getting ready to depart for the NY/NJ Bi-State Rally Continued... 5

FROM THE ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR Summer is officialy over; however, riding season is not. The days (day light) are getting shorter by the minute. As long as the weather holds up, the Hive will be riding. The Chapter has been riding this month to visit our sister chapters, districts, and regions. Family we are growing stronger every day. We welcomed another new member to the Hive. On August 3, we started out the month with a visit to MD-I in Waldorf, MD. In attendance were Aaron Cain, Charles Simms, Bruce Hill, Darlene & Dan Bobo, Tony Bonner, and I. Chapter J was also in attendance. MD-I announced that they were sponsoring a MD District Advance Riding Course on in September. On August 5, the Chat-n-Chew was at the Rio Buffett and Grill, Temple Hills, Maryland. In attendance were Aaron Cain, Ken Trass, Kirk Williams, Bruce Hill, Dennis Johnson, Charley Foxx, Michael A. Jenkins, Lee Tresvant, Charles & Gloria Simms, Stan Greene (MD-I), and I. Those in attendance were discussing the route for the NY/NJ Bi-State Rally and the Region K Rally in Canada. Lee Tresvant broke the sad news that after October, she and Michael Jenkins will be relocating to CoCo, Florida. On August 8, the NJ/NY Bi-State Rally was held in Mt. Olive, New Jersey. In attendance were Aaron Cain, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Dennis Johnson, and Charley Foxx. This was Dennis and Charley s first rally. I was told that they experienced Rally Fever and purchased some riding gear and they attended a few seminars. Dan and Laura Watts from MD-I, participated in the Region Couple of the Year selection process, however, they were not selected. All of us in Maryland District are very proud of them for representing our district. On August 10, MD-L was on the horizon. In attendance were Jeff Lindenwhite, Toni Bonner, Ken Trass, Charley Foxx, Michael A. Jenkins, Lee Tresvant and I. For a moment, we thought it was a Chapter B meeting since we had so many members present. MD-L s Chapter Directors were attending the NJ/NY Bi-State Rally. Spanky Barth lead the meeting. He has been diagnosed with cancer (rare blood disease). It was his first meeting since being released from the hospital. We were blessed to have him at the meeting. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. Continued on the next page... 7

Cont On August 14, the Region K Rally was held in Cornwall, Ontario (Canada). Hampton Conway rode out to meet the group to give them a Chapter B send off. The group consisted of Aaron Cain, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Ken Trass, Charles & Shirley Dorsey, and Stan & Shelley Greene (MD-I). Region K s article should be eventful. On August 16, we had a wonderful monthly gathering. Virginia Chapter I was in the house, Jim & Ann Peterson and Michelle & Timberland Harrington (VA-I s newest members). It was good to see them. They even stated that they would be returning to attend our September gathering because they had so much fun. We also welcomed our newest member, Jim Halstead. Since Aaron was in Canada with some of our members, I ran the meeting with the assistance of Hampton Conway and Kirk Williams. I want to thank everyone who came out. We had a great meeting and continued our discussion on the Level Program. On August 20-21, The Maryland District is hosting in Lusby, Maryland an Advanced Riding Course (ARC). There has never been a GWRRA ARC sponsored course in Maryland before. I hope everyone who needs to advance to the next level in the Level s Program can take advantage of this special opportunity. On August 23, an ice cream ride to Hagerstown was cancelled due to the weather. We are working on reschedule it for a later date, stay tuned. On September 2, the Chat-n-Chew was at Smokey Bones, Bowie, Maryland. I wasn t able to attend but I know a good time was had by those in attendance. On September 4-6, the Pennsylvania Rally is in Erie, PA this year. The PA Districts show up in force at Maryland s Winter Thing, so please try to fit this Rally into your ride schedule. On September 13, an ice cream ride to Sweet Willow s in York, PA is planned. Hopefully, the weather will hold up for this ride. The owner is a motorcycle rider who enjoys having motorcyclist at his shop. I have been in the past and they have GREAT ice cream!!! On September 14, we have the Baltimore-Washington Ride for Kids located at 2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City, MD. 10 RIDER EDUCATION Bruce Hill Chapter B Rider Educator The Rider Education Levels Program- Level II This article is intended to build on the article previously submitted for last month s newsletter. As we explore the levels program, I explained the requirements for Level I; a Commitment to Safety. As we continue through the program, Level II is a Commitment to Knowledge. The completion of this level is also known as a Tour Rider. This certification takes the requirements of Level I and adds the completion and maintenance of a certified riding program. The most common course offered in our area is the Basic riding Course or Experienced Riding Course (ERC) taught by Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) instructors and offered by several area Community Colleges. Also now there is the Advanced Riding Course (ARC) taught by GWRRA certified instructors that is also taught through the community college system. Also acceptable are classes taught by the Canadian Safety Council and the course by the United Sidecar Association. The PLP (Parking Lot Practice) course can be used if it a sanctioned course to maintain a level. It cannot be used to go to the next higher level and can only be used once. It extends the time of certification for one year. At the time one would need to take one of the other courses mentioned to keep their certification. The normal certification time is 3 years. The agreement to take and keep current an approved rider education program shows further commitment to improve one s ability and focus toward becoming a better rider. It goes beyond the concept of safety awareness and adds a structured classroom and on bike training class that further enables the rider to recognize potential road hazards and practical riding maneuvers to enhance one s ability to avoid accidents. In a classroom setting, the rider is asked to perform riding skills that could be useful in a variety of riding situations. The skills are necessary for proficient handling of a motorcycle. The improved skills could be used for actual accident avoidance but most often tends to lessen the exposure of the rider to a potential hazardous situation. For example, if an individual on a motorcycle is in need of turning around on a street without any side roads, the typical 3 point turn on a bike could take over a minute to perform. A rider that has the ability to execute a 180 degree turn in a 20 ft. circle can be headed in the opposite direction in a mere 3-5 seconds; lessening the exposure to other traffic exponentially. Also, the confidence gained by the rider will pay huge dividends in the ability to handle traffic situations. A confident rider will perform the necessary movements of proficient bike handling that lessens the likelihood of a mistake. I am of the opinion that many of the problems encountered with slow speed handling deals with riders that are uncertain and uncommitted to executing it properly. A driver that exhibits a committed attempt at a maneuver usually has a positive outcome. That is where the rider courses offer the knowledge needed for correct technique. A rider should take this learned input and apply it with frequent practice on his own to gain the confidence needed. If a situation arises that requires the rider to make an evasive move, it will be a more automatic response and would require less thought if it was a familiar and practiced movement. I have often said that when faced with that circumstance, you have only one chance to do it right, don t wait till then to practice! Practice can also be obtained by attending a PLP class, it won t count toward any certification (unless it is a sanctioned class) but the time on the course can be invaluable on the road. Co riders can also earn their Level II certification by attending one of the approved rider courses and riding the course. You may also attend an approved co rider seminar as what may be offered at a rally. My thought on this deals with whether you normally have a co-rider on the bike when riding. I have always felt that a rider should take the ERC or other rider courses with the co rider on board. It gives the rider the opportunity to see how the bike handles with the extra rider as well as gives the co rider confidence in the rider s ability to handle the bike. The knowledge learned in class by the co rider can also be of tremendous assistance to the rider as there would be an extra pair of eyes to spot problems. I remember the first ERC course we took made us feel more like a team than ever before as we talked on the way home. The completion of the Level II requirements gives a sense of value to the program and the benefits therein. Remember the true value of the program is not in the completion of the evolutions or the receiving of a patch. It lies in the knowledge gained, the skills improved, and the commitment to safety that provide the true benefits of the program by making you a better rider. 14 Our Ride to Region K 2014 Rendezvous Cornwall (Ontario) Canada Meet & Depart: Thursday, 14 We met at Rips Restaurant (Rt. 301 & 97): Traveling were: Stan & Shelley Greene, Bruce Hill & Regina Smith, Aaron Cain, Ken Trass, Charles & Shirley Dorsey and Hampton Conway met us at Rips to see us off, then he was on his way back home, ShaRon was at home still sleeping. Thanks again Hamp we really appreciate you coming out to see us off! We prayed for traveling mercies and for a safe trip, and got on the motorcycles to start our trip. Stan was the Road Captain, and Bruce was the Tail Gunner. First Stop: Our 1 st stop after gassing up was, you guessed it, the Cracker Barrel, for Breakfast in Harrisburg, PA. After a great breakfast we got back on the motorcycles and continued on, then stopping again for gas & lunch. We decided to eat at the McDonald Restaurant in Great Bear, PA, to discuss the hotel we would stop at for the night, the consensus was to stop at the Super 8 hotel in Amsterdam, NY. We called and made reservations, and then we got back on the motorcycles and headed for the hotel. When we arrived at the Super 8 Hotel, we all checked in. Walmart is almost everywhere. Yes, some went to the Walmart while others sat back, relaxed and watched TV. Next Day: Friday, 15 11:00AM We prayed for traveling mercies and a safe trip. We stopped for gas, and were trying to decide where to stop for breakfast. We stopped a couple of places, one placed was not yet open and the other place was a pizza place. As we were sitting on the motorcycle in Edinburg, NY, a gentleman pulled up; got out of his truck, told us he was a Gold Wing Rider and that when he saw us he followed us. We told him we were looking for a place to eat he told us a block down the street was a really nice restaurant, Shelby s. So we decided to check out Shelby s Restaurant, the food there was great, some got lunch and some got breakfast, I don t think anything on the menu was over $10, great prices! We met some nice friendly people there. After a good meal we headed to Cornwall, we stayed on the back roads, we had a great ride. We got to the Canadian Border, showed our passports, answered a few questions and then we were on our way to the Nav Center in Cornwall (Ontario), Canada. We arrived at the NAV Centre at approximately 5:00pm. Friday Night Meet & Greet: We registered, ate pizza, met & were greeted by Region K and Canadian Chapter Members. We bought 50/50 tickets which was called Share the Wealth. The drawing was held at the end, the ticket was drawn by a new member, ticket number was called, and I (Shirley) yelled I have it and ran to the front, I thanked the new member. I won $95 in Canadian Money. My name was put on the board as the Friday Night Share the Wealth Winner. Read on; guess what happened to my winnings! Continued. 14

Cont.. Day Three: Saturday, 16 8:00AM - We started with a breakfast buffet which was great. 9:15AM Opening Ceremonies After the welcome, we had a Motorist Awareness Seminar. We were then introduced to the Couple of the Year who will be participating in the International Couples Selection in 2015 Wing Ding, in Huntsville, Alabama. Vender: Yes, there was one Vender at the Rendezvous, and yes the $95 Canadian Money was spent on lights for the Motorcycle. We again had lunch and dinner at the restaurant, again the food was great. 7:00pm Mouse Trap Games and Super Hero Contest: This game was a lot of fun and there was some very creative cars made out of mouse traps. There were a lot of costumes for the Super Hero Contest, with lots of fun and laughter. Sad News Stan s brother passed while we were at the Rendezvous. So we all decided we would depart on Sunday early rather than waiting to the end of closing on Sunday. Since we were departing early on Sunday, the Region Director drew the door prizes on Saturday after the costume contest. Yes, I (Shirley) won again, this time a golf club bag. Charles won a beautiful plaque for the Oldest Rider in Attendance. Stan won a plaque for the farthest distance traveled to the Rendezvous. Ken won for pre-registration. So Chapter B did well in winnings! Day Four: Sunday, 17 - We checked out of the hotel and headed back home. Traveling was: Stan, Shelly, Charles and Shirley. Stan was the Road Captain, Shelly was the Tail Gunner. We stopped at the Canadian Border, showed our passports, answered a few questions and were on our way. We stopped for gas, and breakfast. We traveled a little further and then stopped for lunch at KFC in New York. We talked with Stan & Shelley and they would stop in Philadelphia to be with family. When we got close to Philadelphia Charles and I said our good byes to Stan & Shelly and again gave Stan our condolences in the loss of his brother. Charles and I continued the trip on but as we got into a 14 mile construction back up, it was getting dark and late so we stopped got gas, and started looking for a hotel. We checked into the Econo Lodge Hotel in Harrisburg, PA. Day Five: Monday, 18 We departed the Econo Lodge. We traveled, stopped for gas, breakfast, and arrived home safely. We traveled approximately 1,400 miles round trip. We had a great time; this was truly a nice trip. Charles and I would plan to again attend the Region K (Canada) Rally; it is a really nice Rally.
