I did not see the light of day except once during this entire trip. It was only because I fell out of the saddle bag and rolled out of my bag. I have no clue where was because it had been a few days since I was allowed to see. Next time you talk with HIM please encourage him to let me participate in the ride. T the Bee By Kenneth Trass ARTICLE: Yeah T is right. I did not take a picture of him at all during this ride. Oversight on my part. 40-to Phoenix was a different kind of ride for me. I have taken couple of other cross country group rides and in comparison, the 40 was a relatively slow ride. You can t complain about it because it s what you sign up for. The itinerary is published with the advertisement. Russ Schaeffer, out of PA (don t know his chapter) is the ride coordinator. He is a great guy to work with, responsive to all of my inquiries. He assigns folks to groups of primarily 6 7 bikes. He was very flexible when he in his assignments. You are not restricted to this group so if you happen to bond or know someone else you would prefer to ride with you can do it just let him know. I was assigned to 3-NC. Included in my group were a pair of riders from Maine, one couple each from Tennessee and Georgia, and our ride leader and tail gunner. Prior to the rider meeting, Allen Cyr, Maine DD came up to me to introduce himself and to let me know our leader and gunner are not making the trip. So at our group meeting that evening, I got picked as the leader. Bob and Sally, the GA couple would meet us in Conyers, GA (1 st stop). When you register for the ride, one of the questions asked is do you prefer to ride at the speed (Continued on page 2)

Chapter Director Line Hello Family, Blessings to all. Well I thought we were heading towards some warm weather but it looks like things have taken a temporary turn over the past couple of weeks with some cooler weather and lots of rain but we should welcome it all while we can get it. 3 May We held our monthly Chatn-Chew at the Carolina Kitchen in Hyattsville MD but unfortunately I was unable to make it due to another commitment but I did get the word that a good time was had by the family. 8 May We celebrated a welldeserved Happy Mother s Day for you VERY SPECIAL MOTHERS!! Toni decided that she wanted to stay out of everyone s way this year, as she just wanted to go through the tussle of breaking apart a dozen of crabs in the comforts of home. I wanted to join in, but for some reason it seemed like too much work for the payoff so I settled for a catfish dinner instead. 11 May Unfortunately I had to go in for some emergency surgery which has pretty much had me down for the remainder of the month and unable to participate in any activities. I truly appreciate the family checking in on me through phone calls, cards, and s. I am slowly getting back to being myself but it has been a process mentally and physically. 14 May Things were shaken up a little and the Chapter Gathering was held at the Trass Household in Bowie MD. I received word that we had a good showing and the breakfast was excellent. There was also some GWRRA training that took place afterwards which was beneficial to all. 21 May The family headed north to attend the Chapter F Fund Day/ Charity Event in Boonsboro, MD. I received word from MS Shirley that they braved the elements (showers) that day and have a wonderful time fellowshipping with all. In closing, I truly appreciate all the support and efforts by the family. We are starting to get into the meat of the ridding schedule and hopefully I will be back in the saddle soon and able to hang out with the family. Please keep the family in your daily prayers. Traveling Mercies for All, Aaron & Toni Cain Chapter Directors A Spring Ride Part TWO Continued (Continued from page 1) limit, -5 or ++5 mph. This was supposed to be a +5 group. I just wanted to confirm with my group speed limit +5 8 mph was good and everyone rogered up for this. Day 1 (NC GA) The first leg was only 395 miles so it was a leisurely start. We started out at plus 5 mph on a state highway at 55 mph and the group stayed together. Once we got up on the super slab and speed limit was 70 things changed. We start out together then after five miles I check the rear view and I see no one (I am at 75). I slow to 65 and low and behold here comes my group. The trike in the group will barely do the Page 2 speed limit let alone 75. At the fuel stop we (3 two wheelers) ask is there a problem. He says no, he is doing 73 mph. A long discussion followed with no resolution. We finished the leg riding at the speed limit. Day 2 (GA AL) At Conyers we pick up the last members of our group. Next is Leeds, AL, home of the Barber Motorsport Raceway and Vintage Motorsports Museum. We separated into two groups Allen, Art and Robert & Tina (TN couple) wanted to get there early to be able to ride the track. Bob & Sally and I would leave later. The direct route was 190 miles but since Bob & Sally were with me, they got to ride 280 miles. I don t do direct routes well especially when I have time to kill. We also stopped at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame & Museum in Talladega, AL on our way there. The Talladega museum was okay. I would not have on my must see list but if you are in the neighborhood it is a good stop. It had a whole segment dedicated to Bobby Allison and not enough about greats like Richard Petty and AJ Foyt. There was one car with the door removed you could sit in. I could not get me folded enough to get in. A couple (Continued on page 10)

Rider Education - HYDROPLANING Page 3 At the May gathering, we talked a bit about riding hot weather. That hot weather and a sudden change in temperature will often bring on some ugly rain storms, and the subject of hydroplaning. What exactly is hydroplaning and what should you do about it is the subject of this article. Hydroplaning (or aquaplaning as the Brits say) describes the phenomenon of riding on top of the surface of water-- such as water skiing, or getting up on plane in your boat. (If you need more info on water skiing, ask our resident expert, Herbbie.) As you can imagine, hydroplaning on water skis is a good thing; on a motorcycle--not so good --but manageable. Hydroplaning on your Goldwing occurs when your tires get up on plane on a small cushion of water that develops between your tires contact patch and the road surface. How does this happen? Well, just like water skiing. You need some standing water on the road, and enough speed to get up on plane. Your tires are engineered with groves or tread in them in order to push standing water out to the sides to keep a cushion from developing. BUT; if you are riding on worn tires where the tread is not very deep, or if there is a LOT of standing water on the road-- you re going to have a cushion. Now, just because you ride through standing water does not mean you will hydroplane we have ridden in some pretty high waters. One year we were going to Iowa we rode through water above our pigs, and never hydroplaned once. You gotta have SPEED to hydroplane As there is a planing speed for your boat, there is a hydroplaning speed for your tires--that is the speed where your tires will climb up on the cushion of the water. Hydroplaning depends on a lot of things, but a good rule of thumb is: times the square root of your tire pressure will determine your minimum hydroplaning speed. So, for the Honda recommended pressures of 36 psi front, and 41psi rear, the minimum hydroplaning speeds on a Gold Wing are: 62 mph front and 66 mph rear. For Trike rear tires with 26 psi, the minimum speed is 53 mph. What does all this mean? If you are riding above 65 mph (with properly inflated tires) in a hard rain or on a road with some standing water you can hydroplane. How will you know? On a Trike you will most likely see your rpm suddenly jump or feel your rear wheels spin a little (someone once said that it was like their clutch was slipping).--your rear tires will hydroplane before your front tire because you are running a lower pressure on the rear tires. The front tire on a regular two-wheeled Gold-Wing will hydroplane first, and the front end will feel light--like the handlebars feel unstable--- particularly in a turn. What do you do if you suspect hydroplaning? SLOW DOWN -- gently. Once you get below your minimum speed, you will stop hydroplaning. None of the above addresses the loss of traction on a wet vs. dry road, but that is a whole different subject. In summary, hydroplaning is not something to worry about, IF you are riding on good tires, properly inflated and at a speed within your comfort zone. How do you get comfortable riding in the rain?? Practice! Practice! Practice! Remember: There is no bad rain; just bad rain gear. Ride Smart, Ride safe!! Bruce B. Hill & Regina Smith Chapter B Educators

Buffalo Thunder Music & Jazz Festival We attended a really fun event on Saturday, May 28, 2016; the weather was beautiful and since neither MD Chapter B nor any other GWRRA Chapters were hosting an event, Lillian Cruz, Charles & Shirley Dorsey rode to Pomonkey, MD to attend the Annual Buffalo Thunder, Maryland Chapter, 2016 Music & Jazz Festival (Family Picnic). We had our folding chairs and were under a large tent enjoying the music and events. As we read the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club Chapter (Maryland Mother Chapter) History in the booklet that was given to us, we read that there were 5 Charter Members and the Founder of Buffalo Soldiers. Charles and I know very well 2 of the Charter Members, Donald Thigpen and Hugh Valentine; the Chapter History was very interesting. In attendance were Buffalo Soldiers Chapters from Florida, Alabama, New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and other states. There were a lot of beautiful and interesting motorcycles. There were Vendors (Clothing), Food Vendors, Music, 50/50 drawing, TV Raffle, Bike Show, Award for the Longest Distance Rider, and Award for the Largest Chapter in attendance. The Bike Show consisted of three categories, 1) Cruiser, 2) Road Glide Custom, 3) White Gold Wing, there were winners in all three categories; there was also $50 given for the Bike Show winner. The most represented Chapter had 22 members in attendance. There was also a horse at the event. We had the rib dinner; the ribs were delicious and falling off the bones. Although we did not win the 50/50 drawing or TV raffle we had fun meeting and socializing with others. 5 From Your Assistant Chapter Director Thank you for your well wish and prayers during my surgery and recovery period. Although I am still recovering, and it is coming along well. I am sending out best wishes and blessings to all the father s in our Hive, Happy Father s Day! And a special Thank You to those of you who are serving and have served in honoring Memorial Day especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. May s Gathering was held at the home of Kenneth and Deidre Trass. It was a good meeting. Our resident Iron Chief did a great job with breakfast. Afterwards, two training sessions (Team Riding and Riding in the Heat) were presented. On June 4, I traveled to Delaware B and I thanked them for coming to our Fun Day and supporting us. It was a beautiful day for a ride. On June 5, we visited Chapter I. MD-B and a visiting member from California fellowshipped and we had a good time. June s Chat-n-Chew was at the Cooper Canyon Grill in Lanham, Maryland. It was a beautiful night and everyone had a good time. Some members are planning a trip to Canada to visit Region K and Region L and they had a great planning meeting during the Chat-n-Chew. It was wonderful to see Sylvia and Isaac Jackson there. They are thinking about joining the group to Canada. Also, Aaron is recovering well from his surgery and he joined us at the Chat-n-Chew. Upcoming Events: June 25, PA-V, a visit to Everett, PA. We are departing from Rip s Saturday, at 6 a.m. June 26, a visit to MD-H, Aberdeen, MD. 6 RIDE AWARE Share the Road Joke of the Month A ten year old boy was walking down the street when a big man on a black motorcycle pulls up beside him and asks, "Hey kid, wanna go for a ride?" " No!", said the boy, and he kept walking. The motorcyclist pulls up to him again and says "Hey kid, I'll give you $10 if you hop on the back." " No!", said the boy and he proceeded down the street a little quicker. The motorcyclist pulls up to the boy again and says, "Ok kid, I'll give you $20 and a BIG bag of candy if you hop on the back for a ride." At this point, the boy turns around to him and screams angrily, "Look DAD, YOU bought the Harley, so YOU ride it!" Page 6

Letter Reprint Editor s Note: It is with the humblest apology we reprint this heart felt letter. In our haste last month the second paragraph was not printed. We offer this reprint so you can gain the full understanding of Sharon thoughts. K. Trass MD Chapter B I want to take this opportunity to share my deepest appreciation for the many extensions of love and support received from the Chapter during the passing of my Mother. I know it has taken me some time to express my appreciation, but in all honesty it has taken me this long to really wrap my head around losing a very special part of my existence, the main woman who was the greatest influence in making me the woman and person I am today. I know I need not tell any of you what a Mother s love truly means. A Mother s love is unconditional and a blessing that on occasion we might take for gratitude. Sometimes we just think she will always be there. She will but not always in the physical form that many of us like myself had been accustomed to. If your Mother is still with you, I ask one more thing from you all give your Mom an extra special kiss for me. This will be the first time in 55 years that I will not be able to kiss my own on Mother s Day. If you do this for me, I somehow feel that my Mom will know that all those extra kisses were for her (and yours as well). Again I want to thank you all for your continued support. I especially want to thank Grayson Dixon. As he often does, he went the extra mile for me. There were so many things that I didn t know, that were happening at the time of my Mom s passing and immediately thereafter. Things that only someone in Grayson s profession could have helped me with and he did. There were some very tense and sensitive situations that occurred and without Grayson s calls and efforts through his contacts in Charlotte NC, I don t know if things would have gone as smoothly for me as they did. Thank you Grayson (ya ll can kiss him for me too). Lillian and others I don t see you guys often but you are never far from my heart. Thank you all and I will see you soon. Sincerely, Sharon Simmons Page 8

Words From Our District Directors Page 9 Don t you simply love this time of year? I went on line looking for a propeller for my Wing and was about ready to swap my boots for flippers. Don t mention the lawn. It needed to be cut every day, but you can t do that because it s wet and the power mower chokes itself to death. And by the time it stopped raining for a few minutes; you are about nuts from Cabin Fever you have to get the bike out and get some gas off your chest But you know as well as I do what you should ve done is gone to Rent-A-Center or Home Depot and got a tractor and a bush hog to deal with that yard that s now grown up to the 2nd floor window. Yah, I peeped your hold card didn t I? No, not really the truth of the matter is I did the same thing. Remember I told you last month the crazy weather wouldn t last, but now even worst weather patterns are coming. Joking aside, the riding season is finally here again along with it comings some weather conditions that s not to favorable for motorcyclist. I wanted to share this one with you, because it is here and now, and can pop up at a moment s notice. LIGHTNING! According to experts, lightning kills more Americans in an average year than hurricanes and tornadoes combined, and can be particular deadly for motorcyclists. Some experts with the National Weather Service note that motorcyclists need to be aware of the risks when riding through thunderstorms. Lightning can travel seven miles or more before striking the ground. And since sound takes about five seconds to travel a mile, that means if the time between the flash and bang is less than 35 seconds, the lightning is close enough to hit you. Some of us are planning to attend the Region K Rally in Woodstock, Ontario, Friday, July 22 to Sunday, July 24 and Region L s Rally in Truro, Nova Scotia, Thursday, July 21 to Sunday July 24. Please contact Stan Greene from Chapter I or me as soon as possible if you are interested in joining us so we can start planning. There are two leg to the trip some people are going to meet us to go to just Region L. The registration forms can be found on their website: Included in this edition is the new Snapshot form from Tom & Renee the Region Directors, they want us to use. A couple upcoming events to be mindful of: Don t forget Chapter C s Pig Feast on June 18, flyer attached. The New England District Rally in West Lebanon, NH, July NY/NJ Bi-State Rally in Swedesboro, NJ, August 4-6. More listed in the 90 day Outlook. >>> The Bi-State is where Bob and Julie will be in the Region Couple of the Year Selection and they need our support so try to be there, and WinterThing will be here before you know it. Next year s Theme is Tropical Islands. Ride Smart, Ride safe!! Bruce B. Hill & Regina Smith District Directord

A Spring Ride Part TWO Continued (Continued from page 2) of the crashed cars were interesting to look at up close. The drivers walked away. You would not believe that just by looking at the cars. One quick comment on this leg. Sally was impressed with the route. Even though we hit a detour that took us off our path. She didn t realize how many lovely roads (her words) there were around where they lived. She wanted to know how I knew they were there. I told her it s not me, its Garmin. By the time we got to Barber s, the gold wings were off the track and a corvette group was rolling. The gold wings were escorted as I was told, the Vettes however were flying. If you want to see the most impressive collection of vintage and modern motorcycles imaginable, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is the place to go. This place is impressive. They house over 1200 vehicles, I would say 90% are motorcycles. The earliest I saw was an 1880 steam powered trike. If you were a historian you could spend days looking through the collection in detail. The pictures don t do justice to just how spectacular the display is. I must point out the Gold Wing was represented by a trike, that was a letdown. Day 3 (AL AR) The next leg (Alabama to Arkansas) we split up again. Art and Allen went via Mississippi to surprise Art s grand kids. Robert and Tina joined another group. Bob & Sally got stuck with me again. My route to Conway, AR was a 100 miles more than the direct route. I wanted to stop at a couple of Tour of Honor memorials. Bob and Sally enjoyed the first detour but by the time we were to depart interstate for the second they were ready to get to the hotel so we split up. Day 4 (AR OK), our group is now only three wings. The two trikes joined up with other trikes. Bob would commented later that it was a good move for him because his gas mileage improved by 7 miles to the gallon getting away from the two wheelers. This was a pretty direct ride. We only stopped at the Will Rogers Museum. There was not much to see on this leg. I am now the tour guide since I am familiar with some of the Route 66 attractions along the remaining stretch to Phoenix. Day 5 (OK TX) We made two stops. Lucille s Roadhouse for breakfast first. This place was about 50 miles from the hotel but we were encourage to go there for breakfast and we did. It is a Route 66 stop. It s done up in a fifties theme. The food was good which the important point is for me. We left early enough to beat most of the groups there so there was no waiting. So sad for the late risers. I then took my two companions to one of my favorite stops, the Devil s Rope Museum. A museum depicting the development and history of barb wire. Art and Allen like me did not know there were so many different types and classes of barb wire. This time they had t-shirts that could fit me and I got one. Page 10 Day 6 (TX NM) This segment was a one stop leg, Russel s Truck and Travel. Great food and a unique museum to walk (Continued on page 11)

A Spring Ride Part TWO Continued Page 11 (Continued from page 10) through. We spent an hour or so there just looking around. It is a diner and a museum with a variety of items from the 50/60 s era. He has about 25 vintage vehicles on display which they change out every month or so. I should mention that the ride photographer joined us for this leg. After Russel s, I told them we were going to Las Vegas. Looking perplexed I assured them we could do it and be at our next stop easily. Well, enroute the photog lets me know he was low on fuel. Art using the Garmin says over the CB that gas is 50 miles away. Mine does not show this but there is a town we will be driving through and I hope there is gas there because we are in the wide open spaces. As we are driving through what should be the town, I only see two building and they looked abandon, I become concerned. Low and behold, coming out of a rising left curve a gas station, $3.25/gallon. We stopped got some gas. We did not see another station along the route for 80 miles. We may have all been dry by that time. We arrive at the last hotel. The photographer (I forgot his name) tells us we were the most fun loving group he had ridden with. He is right we were having fun together. So for the last leg I decide not to be the leader and I announce this at dinner, Allen if you want to go to Pie Town so bad you lead. So that starts a fun exchange of words between the three of us most of the rest of the night. We ride back to the hotel from dinner. Allen is telling me what a great job I ve done, don t I want finish as the leader, etc. Art says he has an errand to run. We go to our rooms which are directly across the hall from each other. About 30 minutes later, Allen and Art come to my room with a bribe, a pint of Jack Daniels with a cup poured for me. Allen goes through a long spiel on how the appreciate me leading and such. I accept the bribe and plan the route. That bribe was funny, Art came up with the idea on the ride back to the hotel. He left to get the JD. Day 7 (NM to Phoenix) The ride was great good scenery, great weather and easy roads. The highlight was Pie Town. It is a town with only 4 businesses. The Pie-O-Neer, the Good Pie Café, the Pie Source Homestead Café and the Pie Stop. We stopped at the Pie-O-Neer along with just about everyone else but they did not have the New Mexican Chili Apple Pie that Allen wanted. The owner made a call and sent us to her neighbor the Pie Source. Laura, Pie Source owner/baker was wonderful. We had a great time there. We spent almost two hours talking with her and her husband about the pies, the town, ranching and living in an isolated area. I should mention the pies were fantastic, I had 5 slices, Art and Allen had 3 each. I picked up some tips on baking pies too. And it was on to Phoenix. Day 8 (Phoenix) The end was a big lunch, some rides around the area and a tour of the headquarters. It was good ending. Some folks continued on to San Diego and Mexico. I hung out a couple of days with a high school buddy. Then I returned home. I picked up some Tour of Honor memorials on the way home. I spent a couple days in Nashville with Deidre at the Gaylord. She was there for a conference. I went riding everyday picking up all the memorial sites in Kentucky and almost all of Tennessee. Spending the evenings wining and dining my wife. It was a great three weeks of riding.
