2 Chapter Director Line Hello Family! How is everyone doing? We have been blessed with a mild fall (so far) but know that ole man winter is right around the corner. For those of us that will be riding during the winter months I ask that you always put safety first and when in doubt, DON T DO IT! As we move into the holiday season, the Chapter will be assis+ng the needy during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays as we have gracefully commi,ed to every year. We will be asking for a li,le support and +me in making an ever las+ng impression on someone less fortunate. We have ALWAYS come through as a team and this year will be no different. Thank you all for your con+nued support!! 2 Oct Lillian Cruz and Bruce Hill traveled down to Chapter I for their monthly gathering. Unfortunately, duty called for myself so I was not able to make an appearance. They had a great +me and the gathering was very informa+ve. 4 Oct We Held our monthly Chat-nChew at the Long Horn Steak House in Largo MD. We all arrived about the same +me with myself, Dennis & Charley on bikes. The meal was good and we fellowshipped +ll almost closing +me before we decided disperse and go our separate ways. The conversa+ons were all over the place but I think we got some discussion in about who was going to Rally in the Valley and the par+culars on the route to be taken. 6-8 Oct The HIVE rolled down the highways and back roads to Rally in the Valley in Roanoke VA. I got word that a great +me was had by all. They said that it only rained one day while down there which was unusual to say the least. Grace and traveling mercies were upon them as they arrived back home safely. 15 Oct We held our Chapter B Gathering in which Lillian Cruz and Grayson Dixon had to hold down the Page 2 Fort in what was another duty calls for yours truly! There were over 15 members present and a good +me was had by all. Immediately a?erwards, Kenneth Trass led the family and friends out on our annual Fall Foliage Ride which was a big success. We had to move the ride up one week due to the pending inclement weather predicted for the following weekend. Thanks Ken for recognizing that and taking the lead on the ride. 16 Oct Lillian got an early start and represented the HIVE on her visit to Chapter J in Gambrills MD. 29 Oct District Mee+ng. Yes again it was a duty calls moment for yours truly but got word that it was a very informa+ve gathering with a hearty meal to top things off. Well family, as my tenure as Chapter Director is about to come to an end, I just want to say thank you all for your con+nued support in keeping this the best Chapter in MD! We have had several tragedies in the HIVE throughout the year, the most I can remember in a single year since joining, and as always we have remained bonded and suppor+ve throughout. You all are simply the BEST! Take care and B safe out there! Aaron & Toni Cain Chapter Directors
3 Rider Education - Rider Levels Program Page 3 This question is one that many of us find easy to answer. What we may not understand is why anyone would need to ask it. There are some riders in each of our chapters that choose not to participate in an instructed Rider Course. Let s examine this and try to understand why, and look at what a Rider Course can do for you. Some may say, I ve been riding for years. I don t need to take a class. Others will boast about the miles they have accumulated on two wheels and ask what can they teach me? Have you ever tried to persuade someone with that attitude that a Rider Course might help them be an even better rider? Their position can be so negative and so strongly put that you don t want to talk to them about the benefits of rider training. Sometimes, people hide their self doubt behind a curtain of confidence and bluster. Is it possible to have all the knowledge and skill necessary to avoid any accident? Well, if one chooses not to ride very far or very often, then perhaps it is possible. But I wouldn t want to bet my life on it! Do you remember a single season in your riding career without at least one close call or near miss due to another motorist s driving behavior? How about a single month? If you ride around the state or across the country, you expose yourself to many different situations that require anticipation of all the possible actions of other drivers. You have to be prepared to counter with the proper response whatever their action and do it in a split second! A motorcycle Rider Course helps prepare you mentally and physically to execute the kinds of maneuvers called for by a driver s unexpected actions. We look upon these classes as an opportunity to learn and improve our riding skills in a safe environment. The instructors are trained to spot the little techniques during range exercises that riders tend to forget to employ on the road. They provide reminders to all students in a positive manner. Their trained eyes and constructive comments are geared to put each of us on the path to being the safest riders we can be. This can help with your attitude and performance on the road. Being reminded of the best techniques to execute different skills does not hurt at all. It is painless. The practice and coaching helps to improve our skills, whether we never knew the technique to use, or just need the occasional reminder. Hey, who doesn t appreciate a reminder from time to time? Especially when it is about something you want to do correctly and safely, but may have just forgotten the best method. In athletic training we are taught that practice makes perfect. And when you practice something you enjoy doing, it s just a lot of fun! Practicing motorcycle riding maneuvers in a closed parking lot with someone else (the instructors) monitoring the range to protect the riders from outside hazards helps you focus your attention on the task at hand becoming a better rider! On another level, taking a Rider Course will help you quali- fy for advancement in the Rider Education Levels Program, to Level II or above, or keep you current in your present level. And there is one more thing to remember about all GWRRA Rider Course offerings. Nobody fails! Everyone who completes the course receives a course completion card. There are no minimum performance requirements. You are asked to push yourself to improve your abilities. You won t get better at it if you don t try. Sign up for a Rider Course today. You will thank yourself later! Ride Smart & Be Safe! Bruce & Melissa Thayer Former MI Asst. District Rider Educators
4 Joke of the Month - A Few One Liners Riding faster than everyone else only guarantees you'll ride alone. Never mistake Horsepower for staying power. A good rider has balance, judgment, and good timing. So does a good lover. (AMEN!!!) A cold hamburger can be reheated quite nicely by strapping it to an exhaust pipe and riding forty miles. Never do less then Forty miles before breakfast. If you don't ride in the rain-you don't ride. A bike on the road is worth 2 in the shop. Young riders pick a destination and go... Old riders pick a direction and go. 5 From Your Assistant Chapter Director Page 5 Sunday, October 2, I meet Bruce riding 2-wheels at the Wawa s in Brandywine, MD. Stanley Greene (MD-I) joined us at Wawa s. The three of us then proceeded to head forwards Mechanicsville, MD to visit MD-I. It was great ride. October s Chat-n-Chew was at located at the Longhorn Steak House in Bowie, MD at the Bowie Towne Center. Boulevard. The food was good as usual and we had a good crowd in attendance. October 5, after work I drove down to La Plata, MD where I spent the night. This saved me a 2 hour drive on Thursday morning to the meeting point for Rally in the Valley, Virginia s District Rally. It allowed me to sleep in before meeting up with our Chapter members (Riders: Bruce Hill & Regina Smith, Kenneth Trass, Dennis Johnson, and Charley Fogg), Shirley & Charles Dorsey, and I). There we meet Stanley Greene (MD-I)) at the Wawa s, La Plata, MD. On Friday Kenneth departed to head back to Maryland so we were down one member, however, Herb Gaskin rode in the rain to join us so we were up one member. Even though it was a rainy weekend we all had a good time meeting new and old friends. October 15, we had a successful Gathering. Unfortunately, Aaron had to travel for work and wasn t able to be at the meeting. Assistant Chapter Director s Grayson Dixon and I stepped up and ran the meeting. We had visitors from MD-I and MD-J in attendance plus Charley Fogg s granddaughters. Kenneth contacted Aaron prior to the gathering and reported that the following Saturday our scheduled Fall Foliage Ride was going to be rained out per the Weather Channel. So a decision was made to reschedule the Fall Foliage Ride to right after our October Gathering. It was a beautiful day for a ride and our two new members Nathan and Franky and his co-rider (sorry I don t remember her name).participated in their first Chapter Ride. The rider was a 2 hour ride through Prince George s and Charles counties. The ride ended in Brandywine, MD at the New York Deli. Upcoming Events: JANUARY 2017, Maryland s District WinterThing Rally, January 5-7, 2917, Ocean City, MD. The registration flyer is available now on the District website, our website, and this newsletter. By registering early, we as a Chapter will be able to be seated together at Saturday s banquet.
