Membership Enhancement Coordinators Welcome to June 17! Hello out there!! Julie and I have been on the road almost the whole month of May, and this month will almost be the same welcome to the riding season. The first weekend in May, we were in West Point, NY, at the NY Ride In. The Region B Director, Tom Wasluck, along with Julie and I presented the Region B 2016 Chapter of the Year award to NY-K. During the return ride home, we met up with our Chapter and MD-B for their dinner ride to Family Farms Restaurant in Upperco, MD. It is a nice place and great food. This is definitely a place to add to our favorites. Photo: Friendly Farms Restaurant Photo: MD-I arriving at Friendly Farms The following weekend we were at MD-F s Annual Fun Day in Hagerstown, MD. 2

CHOY / Communications Coordinator There is no article this month. Chapter Educator Gerry Yager Rider Education, as we all know, is an ongoing endeavor. It is such an important part of our lives that the GWRRA manual has a dedicated section for this program. Per our manual, the GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcycle skills and awareness. While no one has all the answers, our program is designed to help provide needed information to aide in the meaningful reduction of our overall accident rate. By increasing our rider knowledge and safety skills we strive to prevent accidents, reduce injuries/fatalities, improve goodwill and public image of motorcyclists, all which brings about an increased enjoyment of motorcycle riding. One thing that is too often forgotten is the aspect of the goodwill gained through a safe and law abiding motorcyclist. When a rider is courteous, follows the rules of the road, and is generally riding safely, he/she is deemed competent, both as an aware driver and as someone who does not induce road rage in other motorists. This rider promotes a positive image and rapport with motorists which can create a safer environment as these motorists will hopefully keep a better lookout for motorcyclists in general. In past articles we talked about paying attention, not being a distracted driver. We talked about staying hydrated so as to remain alert. We talked about correct and appropriate riding gear, and we talked about equipment checks. We talked about road conditions and other safety measures. Another way to stay up on all the things we need in our learning arsenal is to take advantage of the learning and safety courses offered by GWRRA. With summer upon us in a few weeks, hopefully we will continue to ride safely, as educated riders and co-riders. Have fun! Charlie Schappet 5

Webmaster GWRRA has a lot to offer. I assume we bought our Goldwing for long distance rides. I assume we joined GWRRA, not just for group rides, but to learn about safety and improving our riding skills. As long as your job allows, traveling to other district rallies widens your circle of friends, provides opportunities for training unavailable in our district and provides new areas to explore. Many rallies provide local routes. Take advantage of their knowledge of local roads and places to have a memorable experience. For the campers, Maryland is not the only state that has organized GWRRA special interest camping weekends. Try one in another district for a change of pace. When staying at a hotel, I always compare discount prices. Sometimes the GWRRA rate is the cheapest! Rescue Plus is a lot cheaper than AAA. It came in handy when my old truck decided to bleed brake fluid. A quick call provided a tow to the repair shop where my brake lines were replaced. They had rusted out. How about a cruise? You may know about the MD District cruises. Did you know that National has cruises too? Right now there are plans for Hawaii, the Southern Caribbean, Alaska and Viking River cruises. Check out the national web site for more information. While you re there, explore the other areas. Did you know that membership dues are now the same for Goldwing owners and non-owners? That is one change I found. Of course, there is a lot of training information. So take advantage of your membership and expand your horizons. Until next time, keep on surfing!. Tony Fontaine 6

Ride Coordinator I recently read what I thought was a perfect quote and would like to share: Riding is as close to being suspended in time as I can get, The past steams away as easily as rain, the future is not guaranteed as something could take it from me in mere seconds, Through all my senses, here is a euphoric connection with the present and all sharing it. Now is good. Group riding tip reminder for this month..surely you have seen a group of riders heading down the street. They are a little loud and sometimes pretty scary looking (remember they are mostly professionals like yourself, engineers, doctors, lawyers, contractors etc.). But they ride in a parade like fashion and for the most part the car drivers give them a wide berth. Ever wonder why? Well it is not because they are bad azz biker look-a-likes, it is because there is safety in numbers and they present a large visual to these hurried drivers. For the most part, they take pride in their parade-like presentation. GWRRA realizes the safety in number concept but our rides are organized a bit differently. We ride a staggered formation utilizing the whole lane; first bike is in the left wheel track, the next is in the right wheel track about 1 Mississippi behind, and the third is in the left wheel track about 2 Mississippi behind. A Mississippi you ll remember from Drivers Ed equals approximately 1 second or a safe traveling distance. Why a staggered formation? A couple of reasons, 1) It provides for some maneuvering room for each bike whereas the side by side style doesn t. 2) It commands the lane without compromising the stopping distance between the bikes in line, in other words you have 2 second distance between you and the bike directly in front and behind. When the formation is ridden correctly it doesn t present the crazed and hurried car driver an opportunity to drive thru the formation (i.e., cut you off). 3) It provides each bike with needed visibility ahead and to the sides. If this is safe why change to a single line formation? This formation is selected by the Road Captain when there is not enough room to safely ride and maneuver such as not having a paved shoulder, a narrow road or long bridge (an escape route). The formation will form a single line and maintain a 2 Mississippi spacing between bikes. You will also see the bike ahead of you holding 1 finger in the air, this is the hand signal for single file and likewise two fingers up is to change back to a staggered formation. Pass this gesture on to riders behind you. 7

Ride Coordinator (cont.) How do we change lanes? Simple act of making our intentions known and providing a safe transition, this is accomplished beginning with a call to the Tail Gunner from the Road Captain to secure the (left/ right) lane. The last bike in the group, when it is safe to do so, moves to the requested lane and calls lane secure. Next the Road Captain signals and uses a three step call after verifying the lane is clear, Look Left (or Right), Move Left (or Right), Now The Command Now is the time to switch lanes as a group. Remember use your turn signal. Every ride has the potential of being split up by a variety of circumstances. First and Foremost Be Safe! Do not ride thru Red lights just to keep up with the group. The Tail Gunner will notify the Road Captain that the group is split and arrangements will be made to rejoin. Do not speed to catch up! The Road Captain will make adjustments to allow you to catch up safely. If you feel you re riding at an uncomfortable rate of speed ask the Road Captain to slow it down. The goal is to ride at a level that the whole group is comfortable with. Remember the right of way rules, if you re in the habit slowing to allow folks from the left lane to make right turns, or right lanes to come left, reconsider this in the middle of the group and keep the group formation tight. A vehicle changing lanes must yield to the vehicles around it. If this driver presses the issue and it becomes unsafe they will split the group. This becomes a safety issue as we are in communications with each other, but the car is not part of the group and may perform a maneuver that catches the following motorcycle unaware, resulting in an accident. Several Goldwings in formation provide a bunch of visibility to cars. If these drivers do not see you. Don t be afraid to sound the horn, and alert them to your presence, most will yield to you and the group. If the group looks professional, the group gets treated with more respect, if it looks scattered and unorganized, it will be treated accordingly. Rides For those who joined us on the ride to Chapter B s dinner at Friendly Farms it was a good ride until we made a comfort stop and my onboard GPS decided it wanted to take us back to the beginning of the ride. After some recalculating (we all know that sound) we were once again on our way and arrived at Friendly Farms, meeting up with our four wheel friends. Chapter B arrived shortly after and we enjoyed a good dinner and comradery with Chapter B. 8

June ride to Chapter L and St Michaels - Recently it has come to my attention that many of our members will be out of town or returning from Americade that weekend. There is a request to change the visit and ride another month when we can have more chapter participation at Chapter L, we would like a good showing. Therefore, I am postponing the June 11 ride to Chapter L and St Michaels to later in the season. Saturday, July 15th - We have a ride scheduled to QVC Studio Tour and Store and the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, PA., something for everyone. I will need a head count by June 30th as it is an all-day ride a couple hundred miles. We are including a lunch/dinner stop before embarking on the ride home. This ride takes a lot of coordination. We need at least six bikes (cars are not in this count) or I will be cancelling the ride. Please let me know if you are planning to ride. GWRRA Challenge - We have had a request, and it s a fair one, instead of taking the first one to complete, as was originally discussed, we will put all participants name (that successfully completed the challenge) in a basket and draw the winner at the October Breakfast Gathering. This allows people who may not be able to ride at the beginning of the season, to still have a chance to win... I Rode.did you get your button yet, get out and ride, share your story. George Hartman 9

GWRRA Ride Challenge Here s how it works This challenge runs from April 1 - September 30, Ride to as many places in Maryland (i.e., towns, cities, municipalities, villages, etc.) as it takes to spell out G.W.R.R.A. M.D.I You will need a picture of you and your bike in front of a town sign, municipal building, courthouse etc., with the name on it. For those that do not ride a motorcycle (and we know who you are), you will also need a picture of just you. Here s the rub, no more than 2 letters from places in the same county, and no duplications (come on, you didn t think I was going to make it easy.) Make sure to date your photo, old pictures don t count. your completed package to me at sgnlm8n@aol.com, or hand me it hardcopy at one of our events or breakfast meetings. All names (that successfully completed the challenge) will go into a hat, we will announce the winner at the end of the season at the October breakfast meeting. There is a gift certificate for the winner. Let s make this a good riding season. 10

So you think you've had a bad day The following is taken from a Florida newspaper: A man was working on his motorcycle on his patio and his wife was in the house in the kitchen. The man was racing the engine on the motorcycle and somehow, the motorcycle slipped into gear. The man, still holding the handlebars, was dragged through a glass patio door and the motorcycle dumped onto the floor inside the house. The wife, hearing the crash, ran into the dining room, and found her husband laying on the floor, cut and bleeding, the motorcycle laying next to him and the patio door shattered. The wife ran to the phone and summoned an ambulance. Because they lived on a fairly large hill, the wife went down the several flights of long steps to the street to direct the paramedics to her husband. After the ambulance arrived and transported the husband to the hospital, the wife up-righted the motorcycle and pushed it outside. Seeing that gas had spilled on the floor, the wife obtained some paper towels, blotted up the gasoline, and threw the towels in the toilet. The husband was treated at the hospital and was released to come home. After arriving home, he looked at the shattered patio door and the damage done to his motorcycle. He became despondent, went into the bathroom, sat on the toilet and smoked a cigarette. After finishing the cigarette, he flipped it between his legs into the toilet bowl while still seated. The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard a loud explosion and her husband screaming. She ran into the bathroom and found her husband laying on the floor. His trousers had been blown away and he was suffering burns on the buttocks, the back of his legs and his groin. The wife again ran to the phone and called for an ambulance. The same ambulance crew was dispatched and his wife met them at the street. The paramedics loaded the husband on the stretcher and began carrying him to the street. While they were going down the stairs to the street accompanied by the wife, one of the paramedics asked the wife how the husband had burned himself. She told them and the paramedics started laughing so hard, one of them tipped the stretcher and dumped the husband out. He fell down the remaining steps and broke his ankle. So, "Is your day as bad as you think?" 18
