Chapter Directors Hello! Welcome to April! I took my first ride of the season. It was short, just over to White Plains. It was cool out, about 50 degrees. Not too bad and it felt great to be on the bike for a ride. I went to Atlantic Cycle. I wanted to try to support them since they support us. So, the big new is that the owner of GRD and the manager of Atlantic Cycle joined forces and bought Atlantic Cycle. They are trying to change things to give everyone a better experience. So, I dropped off my bike to give them a chance. They did a 16,000-mile service, changed the oil, fixed my engine vents, and installed 2 new Dunlop E4s, and checked the brakes. I dropped it off Friday afternoon. They called around 3 pm on Saturday to come pick it up. Work complete all work and parts for under $800. The people were very friendly and willing to help. This was a great experience for me. Hope you too, will give them a chance. Oh by the way, since the change, they have sold three 2018 Wings. We have a very busy month ahead for April. The month starts with the Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on the 7 th of April, as well as, the gathering. Registration is down so hopefully, it will pick up. We have the Bust the Rust ride on Sunday, 8 April. Steve Norbrey has planned a nice ride to Williamsburg, with info to follow. Dinner social on Tuesday, 10 April, info to follow. Coffee social on Saturday, 14 April, at Bob and Julie s (Julie is cooking so come try out her expertise). Chapter J has a ride to Bridgeville, DE on the 15 th of April, check their website for info. On the 21 st, Chapter H will be hosting their Spaghetti Bingo. On the 27 th of April, we have a group attending the NJ Rally in Wildwood, NJ. 2 Something to Think About! I would like to share some food for thought from GWRRA California District. Apparently, the District came up with a word for the year RECHARGE! The word is broken down for the members to take part and think about the following: Remember/refocus on why you joined GWRRA was it for the benefits, the love of riding, or the people? Expectations, on what people expect from GWRRA, the local chapter, and other Members Create excitement as they had, when everyone had joined GWRRA HAVE FUN, we joined because the motto says it all Friends, for Fun Safety and Knowledge Adjust Attitudes be positive in what is said and done Ride Adventures plan great rides to keep members engaged and happy, which will create great memories Group Socials for the members that cannot ride anymore, due to one thing or another, who want to stay in GWRRA Energize the members As a chapter, let s make this year s riding season the best possible, filled with fun, participation and great memories! 2

Assistant Chapter Directors & Membership Enhancement Coordinators Welcome to April This month we celebrate Easter on the 1 st of April. The day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The resurrection represents the triumph of good over evil, sin, death, and the physical body. According to The Old Farmer s Alamac, The Easter tradition is seen around the world. Easter folk symbols include: Eggs, traditionally forbidden during Lent, Symbolize new life. The Easter Bunny recalls the hare, the Egyptian symbol of fertility. The Lamb is said to symbolize Jesus, as it embodies purity and goodness, but also represents sacrifice. The Easter Lilly, with its sheer white petals, symbolizes purity and innocence, as well as the resurrection of Jesus. Last month, we enjoyed a District Dinner at Sakura s. It was a way for the MD-DE District to thank the restaurant for all their support during Winter Thing, and throughout the years. It was well attended by many Chapters in the District. Everyone enjoyed the night. We hope to see more District Dinners in the future. We also attended the District Bowl-A-Thon after visiting Chapter J s Gathering. Of course, there s no visit to the Bowl-A-Thon without a stop at Harbor Freight, or Tuesday Morning for the Ladies. 3

Assistant Chapter Directors & Membership Enhancement Coordinators(cont.) Speaking of our annual Memorial Day Weekend Ride, this year we re heading to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Peaks of Otter Hotel, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, will be our base of operations between events in Roanoke and Bedford VA. Planned events include; the Festival in the Park, D-Day Memorial, Star Overlook, Homeplace Restaurant, the Homestead Creamery, Peaks of Otter Winery, and Chateau Monisette. There are some other less expensive hotel choices located in the area between Roanoke VA and Bedford VA. A few examples, located only a mile from the Peaks of Otter Hotel include a Days Inn at $57 a night, and a Super 8 at $85 a night. All rides will be briefed in the morning, at the Peaks of Otter Restaurant during breakfast. The best part of the weekend you can join in all or just a few rides and visits, or you can just enjoy the weekend relaxing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The choice is yours. Check out the three-month planner in the newsletter and on the website. The weekly has the most up to date information. If you re not receiving it, let us know so we can add you to the distribution list. Membership Enhancement: This month we had five GWRRRA MD-I members who will be expiring at the end of the month. All have been sent renewal notices. Please join us in congratulating Jan McNulty for renewing her membership for two years! Also, she s a proud owner of a newer ride an Indian Motorcycle! 6 S O U T H E R N M A R Y L A N D W I N G S L E T T E R February 2018 Maryland District Assistant Rider Education Coordinator Rider Education Spring Up Motorcycles are meant to be ridden and no matter how well you put it up for the winter it will require some extra attention after sitting idle for a long time such as in the spring. Those that are not able to do their own maintenance should use a qualified shop to do a thorough check up. If you do your own maintenance or you just want to be able to ask your mechanic a list of items to see if he did them, to keep him on his toes, read on Begin with looking under your machine before you move it from storage, any leaks evident? Now the work begins, use the new GWRRA N17 Vehicle inspection sheet to track items as you go. Can t say enough about inspecting your tires visually over their entire surface on a regular basis. Look for cuts, cords showing, and other surface imperfections, inspect the tread depth, the wear indicators can help you decide if the depth is adequate. That back tire is mostly hidden, use the center stand and get down there to inspect. Get the pressures corrected while you are there. While on the center stand give your side stand a look over, including the safety switches if you have them on your stand. All your controls should be checked. Inspect fluids in clutch and brake reservoirs, do the switches for brake and cruise control activate at the proper points. Does the throttle snap back when released and are the cables adjusted correctly? Inspect all cables especially where they rub against other objects for wear and lubricate if necessary. Turn the handlebars and watch your cables for any that may bind and verify the steering bearings are good. Operate all the controls for lights and verify working properly. I use a rope to activate my handlebar brake, if I don t have help, and verify if all brake lights work. Check all the fluids, make sure you do this by the method the manufacture says to do it, you may need to warm up the engine first to check the oil for instance. Check the suspension. Inspect that the brake hoses move freely if you bounce your suspension. Inspect the frame to the best of your ability, especially if you trailer with you bike. Consider perhaps removing as much plastic as you can and get on eye on hidden locations, especially welds. You can go as far as you wish in your spring check, I know one friend who found a mouse nest in his air cleaner, expect the unexpected. 6

Maryland District Assistant Rider Education Coordinator (cont.) Next your bike needs to have all that dust cleaned off, use this cleaning to pull and tug on parts and verify fasteners are all nice and tight while you go over all the surfaces. This is often the time I find problems before they become bad, is while cleaning. Pull your gear out. Helmet liners usually unclip, and you can wash them and inspect them. Also find the manufacture date stamp in your helmet, is it time to replace it due to age? The rest of your gear, check the zippers, fasteners, etc. and if that rain gear hasn t been out in a while give it a look over, spring is known for showers. Your safety may depend on this gear, replace or upgrade anything you deem necessary. When purchasing research the safety rating method on the items and try to buy items in bright colors if possible. Now one more item to get ready for the season, YOU. Your skills diminish without use, so gear up and take your bike out to a safe location and practice quick stops, swerving, and slow maneuvers. This will also verify your bike is up to the task. Ride Safe! Jeff Jeff McCarter (MD-L) Maryland District Assistant Rider Education Coordinator mccarter@4-shore.net 7

CHOY / Communications Coordinator There is no article this month. Gerry Yager District/Chapter Couple of the Year & Ride Coordinator Hello MD-I members. It s that time again for an update from your friendly Maryland/Delaware District Ambassadors of Hospitality. We are finally in tune with the change of time and you can really see the daylight last now as the days get longer? Well, not any longer in reality but it always seems that way to me. It was really good to see so many responds to our effort to recognize the Sakura Restaurant which was one of our major sponsors at Winter Thing Don t forget Winter Thing is scheduled to move back to January next year. As the new year continues Linda and I have managed to find a little time to get started with the GWRRA University ITCP training by viewing the videos and completing the phone interview. Next, we will receive some training materials to prepare for the Trainer class and it should be interesting as the method has drastically changed from it just being a Power Point Presentation. A change is going to Come! No, the change has arrived! Thanks for those who took the time to attend the coffee social we hosted on Saturday March Now let s get ready for the MD-I Pancake breakfast on April 7 th. We ve made our reservations for that NJ Rally and we anticipate having a great time at the beach. Until next month enjoy the days and if you haven t, get your machines ready for the new riding season. Steve and Linda Norbrey 8

Webmaster The long distance riding season is almost here. Time to get in shape. Yes, really. Check the following link for a short article: This is particularly important for iron-butt riders or the one-day ride to Wing Ding in Knoxville, TN. Know your physical limits. Don t be embarrassed to ask the group if you need a break. For example, for the coffee drinkers, it doesn t take long before nature calls (or screams) for a restroom break. Chances are you are not the only one. It doesn t matter if we are only one hour into the ride. Being comfortable is better than saddle squirming. Eliminate as many distractions as possible to focus on controlling the motorcycle. Personally, I find fatigue to be a problem. It develops slowly and reveals itself with a mistake controlling the motorcycle. For example, a popped (versus smooth) release of the clutch from a stop sign. Take a break if anything is amiss. Arriving at your destination alive is more important than attempting to get there faster. Riding a motorcycle is supposed to be fun, not a burden. Planning on taking some rides in the southeast US? Check out the following website for suggestions: Or maybe you prefer the northeast. Check this out: Or perhaps some local Maryland rides: There are many ways to get ideas for a route. If computer websites or Garmin Basecamp is not your choice, paper maps are still available. Look for squiggly lines (Grin). Try roads in the mountains or along a river. They are curvy and scenic. Speaking of scenic, do you know there is an App for that? Yup, if you have an iphone or ipad, try Scenic Motorcycle Touring App. You can download routes or create your own. I haven t figured out how to use the phone while riding. Maybe somebody can figure out a way. Until next time, keep on surfing! Tony Fontaine
