1 January 2011 Newsletter Volume XIV Issue 1 President s Message Inside this issue: Dealers Meeting 3 Ride Schedule 4 Leslie Gulch December 5 Hell s Canyon Ride 6 I am happy to see 2010 in my rear view mirror! Seabiscuit and I had a good year; he s chomping at the bit to get out there. Looking back, I feel our greatest accomplishment was the merging of Treasure Valley clubs with the newly formed Idaho State ATV Association (ISATVA). While renewing Seabiscuit s $12.50 off-road sticker, I reflected on the large number of off-highway vehicles (OHV) registrations processed in Idaho each year. Nearly 150,000 registered machines generate $1.5 million and justify the need to promote trail riding and representation on issues affecting Idaho riders. Haden Claiborne, BATR President Christmas Party 8 Web Corner 9 Web Map Feature 10 Time to RENEW annual club membership Form on page 12 The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) receive most of Idaho s OHV registration funds. The funds are used for safety training courses and trail maintenance, but a significant portion is set aside for grants and trail projects. To date, few applications are made for grants and projects. Our club was successful in applying and receiving a trail project grant in recent years. We purchased trail maintenance equipment, a cargo trailer and an ATV wagon with grant funds awarded by IDPR. Club dues are collected and applied to expenses associated with our newsletter, web site, donations to ATV entities such as the Blue Ribbon Coalition and the Bayhorse ATV Trail System. A portion of dues was used for lobbying elected officials. For example, we lobbied against a bill created to increase each Idaho OHV registration by $2.00. Fortunately, lobbying efforts were effective and the bill never made it to committee. I am pleased about our club s progress, especially in the area of member participation. I will meet with area club presidents and dealers this month to adopt a new program aimed at increasing Idaho s ATV sales and club membership. A plan is in place to work with the ISATVA this year on a repeal of an Idaho law which defines an ATV as a means of take. In 2011, we will continue negotiations with Idaho Fish and Game with a goal to move toward a more favorable solution. We can be encouraged that a positive working relationship with our elected officials was developed last year. I thank everyone for your support in I appreciate your time and effort helping our club to grow and prosper. In April 2011, I complete my term as president and ask that you give your support to the incoming president, officers and board members. I wish you a healthy and happy 2011! 6 January 2011 Newsletter Page 6 Adventure at White Bird The following is the first of a series of stories describing a 2010 Memorial weekend ride into the Hell s Canyon National Recreation Area. It was written to inform readers and serve as introduction of an upcoming ride on May 29-30, Part I. Invitation to Adventure In January 2010, an announcement was made at the monthly meeting that Harold and Judy Morris, Coeur d Alene, planned to lead a group of ATV riders on two day trips into the Hells Canyon of central Idaho, including Pittsburg Landing and Kirkwood Ranch. Harold and Judy explained in an interview, their belief that people are very fortunate to have ATV ride access into the Hell s Canyon area. They recommend spring as the best time to go. It was reported that previous rides guided by Harold and Judy had included upwards of one hundred riders from several northwest states. Some local members knew Harold and Judy and vouched for their organizational abilities and assured that it would be a worthwhile trip. Jay Hastings, Canyon County club president and Boise club ride leader Jim Maxey were invited to pre-ride. Jay stayed on as ride leader. Don Butler and Richard Lambert, north Idaho ATV enthusiasts, filled ride leader positions too. Harold Morris offers last minute instruction to riders before departure into Hell s Canyon. Scott and Mary Jo Dickson and I signed on to record the event with photos and video. It sounded like fun! What would the weather be like? What could we expect to see? Going with a hundred other riders? What would that be like? What would the riding trails be like? Where would we park our vehicles and trailer? We needed more detail! Being Idaho natives, we knew that the area is steeped in history. The Hell s Canyon is North America s deepest river gorge. There are no roads across the 10mile wide expanse and only three roads that lead to the Snake River between the Hell s Canyon Dam and the Oregon-Washington border. The town of White Bird, named for the creek which runs through it, is the site of a battle beginning the Nez Perce Indian wars of It is located between Grangeville and Riggins on U.S. Highway 95, not far from where gold was first discovered in Idaho at Lucile. Pittsburg Landing on the Snake River is the last take out point on the Snake River before entering Hells Canyon and the Seven Devils. Kirkwood Ranch, once owned by Idaho Senator Len B. Jordan who had a sheep outfit there in the 1930s, is listed on the Register of Historic Places and is the subject of a book written by Grace Jordan, Home Below Hell s Canyon. Next month: Adventure at Whitebird Part II. Mike Roberts For ATV rider sign-up, lodging reservations and/or information about the May 29-30, 2011 Hell s Canyon Ride, contact Kilgore Adventures at Or, contact ride leaders Jay Hastings tel: jehasti@gmail.com and Jim Maxey tel: jimmaxey@hotmail.com

8 January 2011 Newsletter Page 8 Thank You A special thank you to Haden Claiborne for organizing a terrific December 14 Christmas party! Linda Brooks and Barney Skogerson assisted by collecting payments for dinner. The pasta dinner and dessert served up by Louie s Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Meridian was excellent. John, the waiter, delighted guests with a talented vocal performance of White Christmas. About 30 members and spouses filled the private room with holiday cheer. Reminiscing of past rides was mixed with plans for future adventure. All participated in a white elephant gift exchange unwrapping a variety of items from bun warmer to an ATV cover. Mary Jo Dickson Following the rules of the gift exchange, Marjorie Glass steals Jim Maxey s white elephant gift, a collapsible wooden basket.

9 January 2011 Newsletter Page 9 Web Corner by Pauline Jones Renew Membership Now! Why can t I see the scheduled rides? It is time to renew your Boise ATV Trail Riders (BATR) membership in order to receive PAPER TRACKS newsletter and have access to scheduled rides listed on the ATV Ride Center. The new club website requires users to REGISTER and club membership will be verified before users can access the newsletter, scheduled rides and events calendar. Club members may post impromptu rides and classified items. Associate members, the Emmett, Canyon, Mtn. Home and Kuna club members must register in order to view scheduled rides and event calendar. Only registered users may submit comments or questions. BATR Registration is EASY! How do I register? Registering on the BATR website it easy. Open webpage, scroll down to the bottom right hand side of the screen, click on REGISTER. Provide a username and password, your first and last name, your address, which Idaho State ATV Association you belong to, and answer the human verification question. Click submit. You should receive an back from the BATR website with your username and password, along with a verification link back to the website. This link is blue. This link must be clicked on or your address is not verified and will be considered not human. All this is to avoid computers hacking into our system. For the non-batr club members, your registration is sent to your local club to verify that you are truly an active and paid member. This is a manual process and should take less than a couple days to complete. This is a must to protect not only the BATR website, but also the posted information. Master Sponsor box Nested Comments? What is a nested comment? On the new BATR website, comments or questions can be submitted for public viewing and answering. When answering a comment or question, click on REPLY rather than submitting a new comment. When you click on REPLY, that keeps the conversation together with the main topic. Keeping a stream of comments together is called nesting. If needed, these nested comments may be reviewed as one entry. This may become very helpful in planning rides for the next year.

10 January 2011 Newsletter Page 10 New Map Feature on Web for the Rides! There is a new map feature on the Boise ATV Trail Riders website.
