4 Page 4 Ozark Section at Arts Center of the Ozarks Submitted by Ruth Shafer On Sunday, February 17, eleven Ozark Section members and two guests gathered at Joe s Italian Grill in Springdale for a hearty lunch and an old-fashioned gabfest. It was great to see former Section members Bill and Faith Schoonmaker again and catch up with their comings and goings as well as have time to just enjoy the company of those we see more often. Following lunch, the crowd moved on to Arts Center of the Ozarks to view a stage play, Agatha Christie s A Murder Is Announced. As always, the characters were interesting, the costuming authentic (1940s this time), and the acting convincing. The gunshots were loud, the poisoning victim was a fun little lady, and the character who done it was the usual Christie surprise. It was a good story, well presented, that made an entertaining afternoon. Happy Easter!!
5 Page 5 Big Brutus Electric Steam Shovel In West Mineral, Kansas Submitted by Kathy Menold What originally was to be twenty-four members and friends of the Ozark Section, including members from the Kansas City Section, ended with only fourteen attending the trip to West Mineral, Kansas, to see the Big Brutus Electric Steam Shovel Museum on Saturday, March 23, Unfortunate circumstances and weather kept the others from joining us. We were pleased to have a Wichita (Kansas) Section member, Bob Poulseen, meet us for the tour and lunch. He and his wife Teresa are moving to Bella Vista, Arkansas. Gary and Darlene Humphries, friends of Robin and Kathy Retzlaff, were also able to attend. The First Mercedes-Benz to Arrive Big Brutus Museum Dennis Anderson in Control!! We learned at the museum that Big Brutus is not just a symbol of the past but an eternal tribute to the mining heritage of Southeast Kansas and to miners all across the nation who toiled to support their families. It was purchased in 1962 from Bucyrus Erie Company of Milwaukee for $6.5 million dollars. The purpose of Big Brutus was to remove with its giant shovel the overburden dirt and rocks that covered the coal seams. Unfortunately, it was shut down in April of 1974 because it was no longer cost effective to operate. For years after Big Brutus was silenced, people were compelled to get closer to this 160-foot giant to touch it and climb it. In 1984 the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Company donated the shovel and 16 acres of surrounding land to Big Brutus, Inc., where the museum stands today. After leaving Big Brutus, we drove to the Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg and had lunch at Two Brothers Mining Company, with a few minutes to hit the slot machines! Ruth Shafer High in the Sky! We would like to thank Jan Sweitzer for making the arrangements and are sorry she was not able to attend at the last minute.
