2 a) ` Letter From The President Bob Mashburn President, Mile-High Section October Behind the Wheel We always like to hear good news but sometimes in life there are changes that prevent that. This past month we lost a longtime friend and member of Mile-High with the passing of Carol Haubold. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Haubold family. On a happier note, we still have a few events planned for 2018 and looking forward to I m wanting your help to make this next year and beyond better for all members. I would like to get more members involved with the club. Call me or we can meet somewhere to go over your ideas. You can reach me at October 13th is our Annual Meeting at the Perfect Landing Restaurant. This meeting is open to all members. Elections for Board members will be held after dinner. If you would like to become a Board member, please let me know by October 1st at bob_mashburn78@yahoo.com or Our planning breakfast is on Saturday, November 3 rd, 9am at the Golden Corral in Englewood, Colorado. We are looking for events ideas for 2019 and need your input for monthly and regional events. We are also needing to plan a regional event for 2019, You don t have to attend the meeting, send in your ideas to nataliemashburn@yahoo.com. This meeting is open to all members. Broncos are off to a good start and you can take a private tour of Broncos Stadium at Mile High on November 10th wear your orange. 5 Culture Creator: Mercedes-Benz USA Chief Exler Builds A New Headquarters in Atlanta Dale Buss, CONTRIBUTOR I am grounded in autos but range broadly. As president and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz USA, he's presiding over the No. 1-selling automotive luxury brand in the country. He is overhauling the crucial relationship between the brand and its dealers. And Exler is steering the company's rumored $200-million-plus naming-rights deal for The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which will open this fall for play by the conferencechampion Falcons. But Exler is actually building something even more important than the stadium deal: He's putting together a new Mercedes-Benz USA culture as the company completes its move from New Jersey to Atlanta. The company will open its $93-million, 200,000-square-foot new structure in Sandy Springs, Ga., in 2018, after announcing in January, 2015, that it would leave Montvale, N.J. Even as 200 transferred employees and 300 new Mercedes-Benz staffers work in temporary quarters awaiting completion of their new headquarters, Exler already has been shaping the crucial internal aspects of how the organization will try to build on its lead in U.S. sales in coming years. "You'd better have your act together regarding the culture you want to create, or the 300 new people will create it for you," Exler told me. 5

6 One thing Exler did was to begin inviting any employee who was interested to participate in a three-day "brand immersion program" that runs regularly at the company's manufacturing complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala. At first, the program was aimed only at dealers and their salespeople. "We take people through the history of the brand and put them on the track in AMG performance cars and let them sit in our SUVs and climb up and down hills that look impassable," Drew Slaven, vice president of marketing for Mercedes-Benz USA, told me. "They come back with a deep understanding of the brand's DNA." In addition to helping employees understand the Mercedes-Benz brand, Exler wanted to "create a much more communications-focused culture than ever before," he said. For example, each month various top MBUSA executives film a five- to eight-minute video with their views about sales trends and other current topics, and lodge it on the internal company portal. Also, Exler instituted a new, 360-degree evaluation process for all Mercedes-Benz USA managers. "We need honestly critical questions to push ourselves forward," he said. That process includes reviews of the chief by everyone in the company, not just his peers in the C- suite and direct reports. All employees were asked to rate Exler in various ways on a 1-to-5 scale, and also were given the opportunity for free-form feedback. "I got 40 pages of that," he said. "Ninety-five percent of it was specific points, not just words to fill out the form. No one had to fill that box. People really took time to make suggestions." The majority of comments were directed at the company per se, "but as CEO I stand for the company." Mercedes also initiated some management actions in response to the feedback and "made some commitments," he said, without being specific. Also, it may seem minor, but Exler has grasped the opportunity provided by the transition to "go paperless" to the extent possible. The company had been wanting to do so for several years, he explained, "but it didn't quite work." When the company arrived at its temporary lodgings in Atlanta last year, Exler took advantage of a new chance to try the paperless strategy again. "We didn't have storage here, and so we had to go paperless," he said. "And it worked because the 300 new people didn't know anything different." And Exler is trying to complete the cultural overhaul while everything is still in transition. "In the first year, everyone understands the situation and people actually pitch in and cover," he said. "But in the second year, it's getting tougher. The intention has to move on, and you've got to be more careful." 6

Many of us have been there before and know it as a venue with excellent food and a beautiful view. We have reservations for twenty club members, but that number can increase with notification.
