1 June 2017 O C Vettes President s Message As we look at our calendars for June keep in mind this month is Adopt a Cat Month, Country Cooking Month, Dairy Month, National Bathroom Reading Month, National Smile Month, Superman s Birthday June 1, Hug Your Cat Day June 2, National Trails Day June 3, National Cancer Survivor s Day June 4, D-Day June 6, Flag Day June 14, Father s Day June 18, National Sunglasses Day June 27 and National Hand Shake Day on June 29. I would like to thank Michael Molendyk for his time and efforts in the revisions of the new Club documents and our recent Route 66 weekend trip. Also, a special thanks to Barbara Hall for hosting our May Social at Tutto Fresco. The dessert treat was very good. June 4 will see members participating in the Huntington Beach Concours and OC Vettes Car Show. Thank you to Janet Cherry for heading up both of these events. Also, thank you to all the members who helped put together goodie bags, sold donuts and coffee, set-up, registration, parking, judging, etc. Your continued efforts are appreciated. We just celebrated Memorial Day. A day on which those who died in active military service are remembered. It s a day we should honor our fallen heroes, but also demonstrate respect and support them by flying the American flag. I am always surprised at the small percentage of homes and businesses that fly the flag on Memorial Day and July 4. Next month we celebrate July 4th. Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago. Take the time and make the effort to fly the flag. God Bless the United States of America. Ron Monthly Social Info TUESDAY June 20, 6 PM The June Social will be held at Dave & Buster's at the Irvine Spectrum on Tuesday, Jun 20. Several OCV Socials have been held there in the past and the food is very tasty and service is good. There are a variety of great tasting beef, pork, chicken, pasta and seafood entrees as well as appetizers, soups and salads. OCV usually has a section of the restaurant to ourselves. If you park in the multi level parking structure at the north end of the complex, Dave & Busters is a very short walk to the south. Come join us to eat and visit, and stay to play if you want to. See you there! 4 Page 4 June 2017 O C Vettes Orange Pits Newsletter 2017 Concours d Elegance The Concours d Elegance and OCV Corvette car show took place on Sunday June 4 at Huntington Beach Central Park and Library. Forty-six Corvettes from multiple clubs took part in the show. For many years OCV has hosted the show and assisted the Concours staff. This will be the last year that OCV participates in this event. This year Janet Cherry was in charge for OCV and she was everywhere at once all day long. Captain s Quarters OCV workers met very early Sunday morning on the lawn above the Library. Corvettes started arriving shortly after and were parked according to model. While the judges for the Concours are extremely detailed in their review of the cars, the OCV show is participants choice with each entry receiving one vote. The OCV awards were given out at 11:30 AM. Members of OCV who won awards for the OCV show were: Janet Cherry with a 1 st place for her modified C7, Jerry Wheeler won 1 st place for his modified C4, and Paul Kerper took 2 nd place for his C2 stock. 6 Page 6 June 2017 O C Vettes Orange Pits Newsletter Route 66 Fun Run Report 2017 turned out to be the best Route 66 trip yet. A group of 36 participated in this year s event. We left on May 4, stopped in Baker for lunch which included Mad Greek, Carl s Jr. and Burger King. Then we were on our way to the Tuscany Suites and Casino in Vegas. After a delicious Italian dinner at Tuscany Gardens we enjoyed a great show The Rat Pack is Back. On Friday we visited the Vegas Mob Museum which was very informative and interesting. We divided into three groups and each group had a docent to give us the guided tour through the museum. After getting our mug shots in the line-up we headed to Boulder City for lunch at the Southwest Diner. Then a great drive to Kingman on Highway 93 ( 90 mph+). After picking up our Fun Run registration packets at the Powerhouse in Kingman it was off to our rooms at the Best Western which is a very nice facility, good breakfast and happy hours. We also ate at Dam Bar Steak House and Oysters Mexican Restaurant. Saturday and Sunday saw us enjoy visiting Seligman, Kingman for car show, Oatman mining town on the Route 66 Fun Run and then home Sunday after lunch at Juicy s Café in Needles. This is a great trip if you enjoy professional entertainment, like driving your corvette, eating good food and fellowship with friends and club members. Next year s date to mark your calendars is May 3-6, So plan on being at Denny s on the morning of May 3rd. We leave at 8am. Thanks to all of those who joined us this year. Ron and Michael

7 Page 7 June 2017 O C Vettes Orange Pits Newsletter Left, the Las Vegas Mob Museum. Above, the finish line at Topock/Golden Shores AZ Black Rose Color Phased Out The rumors you have heard are true, Black Rose will be phased out. The color was announced in 2016 as a new color for the 2017 model year. Only 1,333 Corvettes were built in the shade so if that was your color of choice your car is pretty rare! Basically we are painting Black Rose until the plant shut down happens in August and it won t be brought back when we start back in November, said Harlan Charles, Product Marketing Manager for Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro. We will replace it with a new color TBA, but [that] may not be right away. What will the new color be? At the Bash Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter along with Harlan did survey the crowd and count hands for various colors and options on the Corvette. It will be interesting to see if any of the ideas that were mentioned debut for Poker Run on July 15 Saturday, July 15 th is the date of the 6 th Annual OCV Poker Run. This is a major fundraiser for the club and a fun activity too. All members are encouraged to attend. Mark Shearer and Leo Mann have laid out the course, which should take approximately 2 hours to complete. The course will end up at Citrus Café for lunch, awards and raffle prizes. See flyer page 19. There will need to be lots of raffle prizes to win for those who have lucky tickets. Several members brought prizes to the June Business Meeting; thanks to everyone who contributed. If you did not, it s time to help provide items to be used for raffle prizes. Please bring any items you are donating to the July Business Meeting. Think of items for both men and women. All types of items are welcome, including any type of alcohol, gift cards to restaurants, movies, etc, household items, small appliances (e.g.. popcorn poppers or similar items), Corvette accessories, and car care items. If you have items that can be grouped together to make a gift box or basket, it would be appreciated if you can assemble them before giving them to the prize committee since the July meeting is only a few days before the event. Please be sure that items are new and in good condition. The more prizes we have, the more popular the event will be with other clubs. Donations are tax deductible. Lets make this the best year yet!

A Word From Ron Molendyk: Who Knew? Did you know Rabbits like licorice. The most commonly used letter in the alphabet is E. A cat has 32 muscles in each ear. All insects have 6 legs. Sponges hold more cold water than hot water. Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards. The average person will spend 25 years sleeping. Cows don t have upper front teeth. There are 31,557,600 seconds in a year. Pearls melt in vinegar. Did you know? OCV Member News If you have life or family events that you would like to share, please contact Nancy Ward. OC Vettes members are saddened by news of the passing of our fellow club member, Janet Stought. Mike and Janet joined our club in September of 2006 and quickly became very active members. They have been long time volunteers at the Huntington Beach Concourse event and as starters for our Poker Runs. They participated in many club activities and took part in several club trips. Janet will be fondly remembered for her friendliness, her bubbly personality and her ready smile. Mike and Janet were married for 52 1/2 years. Retirement did not interest Janet. She was a former teacher. She loved her retirement job at the Automobile Club in Costa Mesa. A donation to Children s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) from the club will be made in her honor. Congratulations to Dave and Edy Gautschy who rejoined OC Vettes five years ago. Our condolences to Henry Walker, whose brother, Fred, passed away earlier this month. Bill Takanabe remains in the hospital and is still recovering. He is taking phone calls and receiving visitors. Janet Walsh is well on her way to recovery with her broken foot and now is walking without crutches. Dave Walsh is in rehab and unfortunately has had many setbacks. He still requires a lot of assistance. Several other club members are also having medical issues. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. Corvette Facts Ron Molendyk The corvette is named after a class of warship. The Chevrolet Corvette was originally code named Opel, but Chevrolet s chief photographer Myron Scott is credited with coming up with the Corvette name. He was inspired by the small, fast class of warships called corvettes.

9 Page 9 June 2017 O C Vettes Orange Pits Newsletter In Memory of Janet Stought Janet Stought, a long-time member of OC Vettes along with husband Mike, passed away on May 26 from pancreatic cancer. Janet was at peace and those moments were shared by all of her close family. Our golden girl is missed by Mike, her sons and extended family here and in UK. Janet wore a quick smile and made many friends in our Corvette community, as well as her AAA folks and friends both locally and from living and working in TX, GA, and south FL. Janet saw many places, cruised to some in one of the Vettes. Her two favorites were Reagan Ranch sponsored by Alice and Walt Willard, and Death Valley when sponsored by Betsy and Don Slauson. Janet saw some pretty high speed driving on the road out of Baker making that first day even more exciting. Please keep her in thoughts near and far. Thanks, Mike Janet and Mike Stought Club Clothing and Accessories You can order clothing items such as the club approved royal blue shirts with the OCV logo on them from Land s End Corporate site.
