Prego Mediterranean is the restaurant that will be used for the lunch and raffle at the end of this year s Poker Run. The restaurant is quite large inside. The OCV group sat at long tables in a room at the back of the restaurant. The menu included appetizers, salads, classic Italian dishes and delicious desserts. It took a while to get the checks and payment worked out due to a problem with their registers, but it got sorted out while the group had time to visit. 4 Page 4 May 2018 O C Vettes Orange Pits Newsletter Palm Desert Trip Report There was a lot of OCV Fun in the Sun for the 22 OCV members who attended the Palm Desert trip event from Apr 5-8. There was plenty of good food, golf, shopping, massages, card games, desserts, education, relaxation, and fun. The weather was great all weekend, not too hot or cold and perfect for being out around the pool. The group left on Thurs morning, stopping for shopping at the Cabazon Outlets. After some shopping, there was lunch at Ruby s then on to the Inn at Deep Canyon where everyone hit the pool and unwound with drinks and snacks. Dinner on Thursday night was either at Las Casuelas Terraza downtown followed by the Villagefest Street Fair or at Vicky s of Santa Fe for appetizers and piano bar. On Fri, there was relaxation, shopping, golf and massages. Friday night was a delicious dinner for the group at Bella Vita Ristorante Italiano. On Saturday, the group travelled to the General George S. Patton Memorial Museum, the home of the Desert Training Center. It was a World War II training facility established in the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert, largely in Southern California and Western Arizona in Its mission was to train United States Army and Army Air Corps units and personnel to live and fight in the desert, to test and develop suitable equipment, and to develop tactical doctrines, techniques and training methods under the leadership of General George Patton. It was a key training facility for units engaged in combat during the North African campaign. It stretched from the outskirts of Pomona, California eastward to within 50 miles of Phoenix, Arizona, southward to the suburbs of Yuma, Arizona and northward into the southern tip of Nevada. Our group had a great docentlead tour of the facility on Chiriaco Summit followed by lunch at the nearby diner. For dinner, the group headed to Fisherman s Market & Grill for dinner on the outside patio. On Sunday morning, everyone enjoyed breakfast at Manhattans in the Desert before heading home. The trophy for best Corvette was voted on by guests and staff at the hotel over the weekend, and it was won by George and Isabella Loveren. The schedule has been set for next year. The weekend will be April 4-7. It is not too early to book a room for next year as all of this year s attendees have already reserved their rooms for next year. You can call the Inn at Deep Canyon at (760) Tell them you are with O C Vettes and ask for a room facing the pool. Jane Wheeler, Donna Mann and Ellie Cranston will make up the planning committee for next year. They are interested in hearing from past attendees about the trips and restaurants that they liked and activities they would be interested in attending during the weekend. The trip changes every year and we hope to keep it fun for everyone. Let us know your ideas! Dinner at Las Casuelas Terraza for Leo and Donna Mann, Henry and Sue Walker and Art and Robin Rosen.

Melt-in-your-mouth Food Fact Forrest Mars Sr., son of the Mars candy company founder, had a falling out with his illustrious father, and in 1932 went to England to try and go it alone in the confectionery business. The story goes that on a visit to Spain during the country s civil war, he observed soldiers eating chocolate candies encased in a hard, sugary shell. This was a revelation to Mars who, like any good candy maker, knew that chocolate sales plummeted during the summertime, for obvious reasons. But it may also be a cover for a much less revolutionary truth: That Mars copied the idea from another company. English candy maker Rowntree s of York came out with Smarties, the hard-shelled chocolate candies, in 1937, during Mars prolonged stay. The early success of Smarties may have caused a light bulb to go off in Mars brain. Whatever the case, Forrest Mars developed a manufacturing process for M&M's Chocolate Candies, patented it, and in 1941 began making them out of a factory in Newark, New Jersey.
