Everyone ride safe and enjoy this weather. October, 2016 Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD Hi All We believe that our Chapter I members stepped up and supported WOTS as we have always done in the past. Hopefully our move to the Haywood County Fairground next year will be a great improvement over the Cherokee tent facilities. It was very hot and hard to control who was coming and going. We actually had visitors that found a way in without paying. Hopefully next year we will have more vendors and the ones that say that they will be there will live up to their commitment and actually be at WOTS. For Chapter I at WOTS we had a couple of our members that did very well. Dave Smith was the lead rider for the light parade. As the director of Chapter I by far the greatest thing was that our Chapter I Educator ( my beautiful wife) Janet Hill was chosen as educator of the year for the North Carolina District. Chapter I will have some staff changes for After doing a great job Jerry Pitts has said that he will enjoy our chapter rides more if he can just relax and enjoy the rides and not be responsible for the planning. Sometimes Ride Coordinator can be a thankless job because even though you may make the majority of the members happy there may be someone that was not and they will let others know that it was not what they wanted to do. Thank you Jerry for being there for us. Dave and Dianne Smith will be our new Ride Coordinators and will no longer be our MECS. Charles and Nancy Weinhagen will be our new MECS. Thank you Dave, Dianne, Charles and Nancy for all that you do for Chapter I. Our planned riding season is very quickly coming to an end. In September we were not able to do our meeting day ride because WOTS was on that weekend, but some of us (6 bikes with two co-riders did a mid-week ride. We rode the Tail of the Dragon and went to Pigeon Forge, Tn and had lunch. That was a 350 mile ride day for Janet and me. The second weekend in Oct. we have a weekend ride planned. I am not sure of the ride after our Oct. meeting the weather will determine whether we ride or not. After that I am sure that some of us will be riding, but that will be the last planned. Several of our members will be going to Florida and if they take their bikes they will continue to ride all year. Larry, Jackie, Bruce, Brenda, Stan and Nancy we are envious and we will miss all of you. 2

We will be having a staff meeting sometime in Oct. or Nov. If any of you have any ideas that you would want our chapter to do next year please let us know so that we can plan for anything that would be good for our members. As always we would like to thank our members for making Chapter I the best chapter that we have ever been involved with. A special thanks to our outgoing and new staff members. Ride Safe Janet & Tillman Hill 3

C h a r t e r E d u c a t o r s Riding tips for you and your 3 wheel motorcycle October, 2016 Riding across poor road surfaces There are a few simple rules you should follow when riding across sand, mud, water or any loose surface or obstruction on the road. Downshift and slow before you reach the problem area. If there is traffic in the area be sure they know you are slowing. Tap your brakes so the brake light flashes. Try to cross the surface in a straight line, or at least do not change direction or speed abruptly. If you have to cross an obstacle in the road, like a 2X4 piece of wood rise up off the seat if all the tires will impact the obstacle. Remain seated if only one tire will impact the obstacle. In either case hold the hand grips firmly, without locking your arms. Just before the front tire or tires will be crossing the obstacle slightly roll on the throttle before making contact. This will lighten the front end of the 3 wheel motorcycle. Remember to roll off the throttle just before the back tires cross. If only one tire crosses the obstacle you may feel a lot of side to side handlebar movement. This is normal and should stop quickly after you have passed the obstacle. Steel bridge grating and rain grooves Steel mesh bridges can be extremely unnerving. Keep an even throttle and the 3 wheel motorcycle straight. Don t grip the handlebars to hard. If there is a vibration don t fight it because this is a normal feedback from your tires going over thousand of little squares. Some parts of the country have rain grooves in the highway. Obviously to give you more traction on the road when it rains. The reaction to your 3 wheel motorcycle depends on the tread of the tires. Sometimes it feels like you are getting a flat tire with a squished back and forth sideways motion. Just keep it straight and don t fight the handlebars. There is nothing dangerous about these rain grooves, it just feels funny. This information was taken from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. There is a magnitude of information on this web site. This is only a small amount of information that they have on their site. The more we read about safety the more we are conscious and are able to handle situations when we ride. Remember always be aware of your surroundings. Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I Educator 4

Membership Enhancement Coordinators Dave & Diane Smith October, 2016 Hi All, Since the last time that I sat down at this computer Humpty Dumpty has put on over 5000 miles. The first day out the gate, headed for Wing Ding was 438 miles and ended with a two day stay at Mom s house. Leaving from Greenville, OH with friends from B3, we had sunny skies and light traffic to begin our journey. Former Chapter Director Harry and Sandy Durbin from B3 were making the trip with me. We spent the first night in Peoria, IL and we woke to pouring down rain. Putting on the ole frog togs, we rode 100 miles to Sioux City, SD before it let up. 335 miles that day and we were ready to hang it up. The next three days the sun was shining and temps reached the lower 90 s. By now at the rest stops and gas stations we were seeing other Wingers headed for Billings. We arrived in Billings on Tuesday afternoon and went straight to registration to pick up our packets. We settled into our rooms at the motel and went to the grocery store to pick up food for the week. By the time Sunday arrived I was almost partied out. I had attended opening and closing ceremonies. Attended the top gun competition, drill teams competition, J&M concert, and rode in the grand parade with 306 other Gold Wings. I had visited the vendor area several times, voted in the bike show and ridden several trikes in the demo area. One of the special highlights for me was attending Pastor Ken Kirby s church on Sunday morning with my good friends Bill and Ester from B3. It was at Wing Ding in Billings 2007 that Pastor Kirby married Dianne and I. The main entrance to the expo center was right next to the huge flower bed where the ceremony took place and so I got to see it every day as I walked in. There are extra special days in our lives, like when our children are born, and marrying Dianne was one of the greatest days of my life. After church on Sunday I headed out for Buffalo, WY which was 171 miles away to meet up with Harry and Sandy. The temps were cool in the mid 60 s and the wind was blowing really hard and it rained off and on the whole way. Even though it was one of the shorter days of the trip it certainly felt like a long day. Packing my gear into the room and covering up Humpty Dumpty made me grateful to have a warm place to lay my head down at night. Starting out on day 12 the temps were back in the 90 s. We were all ready to get home so we started leaving before dawn and hammered out some hard miles. Through Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana 5

and finally Ohio in four days and I was back at Mom s house. I took a few days to help Mom move; then I rode back to Indianapolis to attend a Colts game with my sister and her family. On day 19 Humpty Dumpty headed towards the barn. It was to be the biggest day of the entire trip putting on 468 miles when we rode into the driveway. As I started empting out the trailer and dumping my dirty laundry into the basket, it seemed almost like a dream. The time had gone by so quickly that it was hard to believe I had been to Montana and back already. It was nice to be home with Dianne and to sit in my man chair. Thoughts were already turning to Wings over the Smokies and the upcoming overnight ride. I guess I will let the others write about those. In the meantime I think I am going to take a nap. Here are some upcoming rides if you need something to dream about. Oct 8 NC-I Overnighter (see newsletter for details) Oct. 11 Cook s Night Out, 6:30 at Wild Wings Cafe at 65 Long Shoals Rd., Arden Oct. 22 Monthly Meeting eat at 9:00 and meet at 10:00 Ride after the meeting I want to say a special THANK YOU to Phil Hendricks, who without his talented skills Humpty Dumpty and I would not have had as safe and trouble free trip that we did. I hope that all of you got some seat time too. Go 4 It. Stay Safe in your Travels David & Dianne Smith GWRRA Chapter NC-I MEC 6

At the end of October I will be stepping down as Ride Coordinator. I want to thank you all for your support and assistance. Our Chapter is made up of a great group of people to ride with. It has been a true pleasure serving this year. I feel there are many people in the chapter more qualified and they should have a chance to lead. I will be happy to offer any assistance I can. Thanks again to everyone. You will notice the after meeting rides are Open. This is a great opportunity for you to take the group on one of your favorite rides without having to guide an all day ride. 7

Keep the shinny side up. Jerry and Brenda Chapter Overnight Ride Oct Are you tried of riding in 90 degree heat? How do you feel about riding in some nice cool weather? How about kicking back in some 72 degree days with big white puffy clouds and blue skies overhead? If this sounds like your kind of weather than get your Wing polished up for the NC-I fall overnight ride. Your day is going to start out in Weaverville when you ride into the parking lot and see several Gold Wings lined up. The first thing you notice is the trunk bags strapped down on the luggage racks and you know that the Wing is not going to be home in the garage tonight. As more members ride in the talk centers around the day and where we are going and what we are going to do. Jerry calls the rider meeting to order and then riders and co-riders start mounting up. The line of Wings pulls out of the parking lot and rolls out onto the highway. Looking down the white lines flash under the left side mirror in sequence and the guardrails flicker past as the Wing leans through the turns. The group passes farm houses and barns that need another fresh coat of paint. The brooks and streams bubble as the water flows over the rocks. Before you know it the group is rolling into Boone. Lunch is at the Daniel Boone Inn. A feast to behold for sure. But the day is just getting started. After lunch Jerry does a radio check. Everyone raises their hand and the Wings are off. We ride into the little town of Blowing Rock. You feel like the ole cowboys must have felt coming into town. The group slowly rides through as people stop what they are doing and turn to look at this group of riders in leather passing thorough main street. Little kids point and stare at the chrome on these big machines. An afternoon walking the main street going in and out of the quaint little shops. It s back on the Wings for the short ride to Lenoir. Check in at the Comfort Inn (note details at the end of the article) is quick and after freshing up and a short nap it s off to dinner. Lots of laughs, some good food and a glass of wine and the group is off to challenge each other to a game of miniature golf. Then it s back to the motel for a night of rest. That s just day one. Come and join your NC-I family for a fun trip and find out what awaits you on day two. Get your reservation made at the motel and then let me know. That s all you need to do besides putting gas in your Wing. 8

What an honor it was to receive the two education awards that were given to me at Wings Over the Smokies. I want to thank Susan, Kyle, Tony, Tom, Sid and any other participants of the program that might have taken part in my getting these plaques. It was certainly a surprise and I will continue to do my best to make sure Chapter I is well educated. I believe chapter member should always be involved in safety training exercises. We as educators should share our knowledge as well as get feedback from our members. Hopefully by discussing situations it will help us remember what to do in case of any type of situations. It is very important that we keep up to date on our training and we, at Region N, have such a great education department and great trainers. Please don t pass up a chance to take classes. No matter how many time we take them we learn something new. We as educators should make sure all members are aware of classes they need and keep them informed of schedules and availability of classes provided by GWRRA. I often try to read other chapter newsletters and sometimes I find something that really explains GWRRA. I was reading Morristown Tn. Newsletter and the very first thing written under WELCOME was the following explaining GWRRA. We are the world s largest single-marque social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing motorcycles, and, some would say, the world s largest family. Dedicated to our motto: Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a NON-PROFIT, NON-RELIGIOUS AND NON-POLITICAL organization I am very proud to be a part of this organization and to be a part of Region N. Again, thanks to everyone that participate in my receiving the education awards. Janet Hill, Asheville Chapter I 11
