Everyone ride safe and enjoy this weather. Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD April, 2015 I do not know about all Chapter I members, but speaking for Janet and myself the month of April is a special month. The time has finally arrived to get those beautiful machines out of the garage and out on the great North Carolina mountain roads for your first rides of the year. Remember that you have not ridden for a while and you and your bike (or in the case of many Chapter I members), your trike need to get used to each other again. Remember your TCLOCK, to make sure that your baby is healthy and ready not just to let you ride her, but that she will bring back home just as healthy and happy as you were when you left. Our Chapter I rides begin in April and, as in the past, Al and Dave Smith have spent a great deal of time this winter planning for another great year of 2nd and 4th Saturday rides and some great weekend rides. As all of you know Dave, Jimmy and Carmen (my brother and his wife), Janet and I will be riding to Washington, DC on Memorial Day weekend for the Rolling Thunder Rally. This is not a Chapter I ride, but anyone that would like to join us, please let us know so that we can plan this wonderful ride with you. As all of you know Wings Over The Smokies has been moved to the 2nd week in July. It has always been held in September, but this year our national GWRRA leaders moved Wing Ding into September. Goose and Dorothy Richards our District Directors felt that if we tried to compete in the same month with Wing Ding that Wings over the Smokies would not have the attendance that we need to help make this great event as successful as we were last year. I hope that our Chapter I members will want Wings Over The Smokies to become what it was in the past. Let us all jump in and help in any way that we can. As all of you know this is our third year as Directors. We do not want Chapter I to become stagnant because Janet and I may think that everyone is happy with the way that we are and that we are not open to change. We more than welcome your input to help us to be an even better and fun group. We need someone to step up and assume the position of Chapter Educator, I think that Janet with the help of John Williams has done a great job, but we would love to see our members be more involved in our chapter. As you all know Al and Jean have their house on market and may be leaving us (we very deeply hope that they will still be active with us from their next home). Al and Jean are Ride Coordinators and ACD. They have not asked anyone, but I believe that it would relieve them of a lot of pressure if someone would step up and take the ACD position. I hope that Chapter I has great and enjoyable year for all of our members. Tillman and Janet 2

Enjoy the Ride and ride often Al & Jean Warren GWRRA Chapter NC-I Co ACD GWRRA Chapter NC-I Ride Coordinator April, 2015 I m sure that Robin is waiting on me again so he can finish and distribute the monthly newsletter. I guess by this time it must seem like I m taking a little bit of pride in being the one each month who causes him to miss his deadline for publication. Jean always said that the one thing that I could always do on time was procrastinate! Finally! The riding season is about to start again! Some winters it seems like it is never going to arrive, and this was one of those winters. I know that some of you ride periodically throughout the winter, but even you would have to admit that the days that you can ride are few and far between. By now the roads are (mostly) free of ice and snow and we normally don t have to wear all the extra gear that goes along with the cold weather. Our first Chapter Ride will take place (weather permitting, of course) on April 11, which is the weekend after Easter. While some of you might be on vacation, I believe that most of us will be chomping at the bit to get out and get going again. As usual for the first ride of the year, the plan is to head south and east into our neighbors directly to the south of us, then wander around, have some lunch and find our way back home again. While it won t be an all-day ride, I think it will be a pleasant one and we ll begin to get our sea-legs (or road-legs) back again. I took a ride a couple of weeks ago and I was amazed at how my muscles reacted after so many months of not riding, even though I have been very active all winter. Details on time and place for departure will be forthcoming in an the week of the ride. The following weekend (April 17-19) is our planned Guys Weekend Ride this year. I have to admit that I was thrown a bit of a curve when I started checking into motel reservations. You NASCAR fans are probably aware of this, but they moved Race weekend for Bristol from March to April this year, due to the usually cold weather in March leading to declining attendance. Of course, that is the weekend that I had planned to ride several of the Southern Dozen with the guys. So I m having to re-route our weekend and will get info out to everyone ASAP. As we have the last few years, we will try each month to do a 2-3 hour ride following 3

the chapter meeting each month. This will be more local and short, but a chance to get out and lay some rubber on the roadways around the area. Following the April 25 th meeting we will be staying a while longer and I am requesting that as many of you stay as possible for a review of group riding techniques for our chapter rides. I believe it has been too long since we have gone over some of the things and I want to get things fresh in our minds again. I can t say that it is mandatory, but strongly encouraged is an understatement. Phil Hendricks will be participating as well with a perspective from the rear of the group so that we can all understand what the different position riders are doing. We have the room at J&S for an extra half hour and Tillman has guaranteed that he will stop talking early so that we have plenty of time to have it be an interactive session. I hope that you will do your best to attend. Looking forward to riding with the group again. Al Warren COME RIDE WITH US or MISS OUT ON THE FUN 4

C h a r t e r E d u c a t o r s Safety Tips for Motorcycles April, 2015 Among all motor vehicles, motorcycles are the most vulnerable on the road. Because motorcycles do not have seat belts, you can be thrown off your seat in a crash, which can result in serious injury or even death. Imagine your chance for survival if a truck strikes you, or if you strike it. Hitting a truck is like hitting a steel wall. However, your chance for survival will be increased if you wear a helmet and follow the safety tips below when riding your motorcycle. WATCH THE NO-ZONES Never hang out in a truck's blind spot or "No-Zone." Trucks have large No-Zones on both sides, the front and behind the truck. Truck drivers cannot see you when you ride in these blind spots, which allows for a greater chance of a crash. The front blind spot is particularly dangerous if you need to stop quickly. Because of their lightweight and braking system, motorcycles can stop much faster than trucks. A truck may not be able to stop as quickly as you do, so you need to take special precautions to avoid crashes before they happen. ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET Make sure to always wear a helmet. Beware of helmets that do not meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. Check for the DOT label inside your helmet. Helmets are the most important piece of equipment you can wear when riding your motorcycle. A helmet could be your only source of protection in a serious crash. DRIVE TO SURVIVE Motorcycles are the smallest vehicles on the road. Unfortunately they provide virtually no protection in a crash. Other drivers may not see you on your motorcycle, so you must be aware of everything on the road. Be extra cautious, paying attention to the signals and brake lights of other vehicles, especially trucks. However, you still need to be prepared in the event their signals or lights don't work. Ride with caution and drive defensively. Even though your motorcycle may be small, you must adhere to the laws of the road. Never ride in between lanes in traffic or share a lane with another vehicle. Don't instigate aggressive driving with other motorists; you will only increase your chance of a crash. 5

CHECK YOURSELF AND YOUR BIKE Conduct a safety inspection of your motorcycle before each ride, and wear protective clothing including gloves, boots and a jacket. Proper maintenance and protective clothing will help reduce your chance of an crash or the severity of injury if you are involved in a crash, especially with a large truck or bus. WATCH YOUR SPEED Of all vehicles, motorcycles accelerate the fastest, while trucks and buses are the slowest. Please watch your speed around trucks, especially in bad weather or at night. Colliding with the back of a truck will end your riding days. Ride safe, ride smart and ride at your own comfortable speed Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I Educator 6

Membership Enhancement Coordinators Dave & Diane Smith April, 2015 Hi All, YEAH I think that spring has finally arrived. The flowers are getting ready to come out from their hiding places, the trees have buds on them and the sun is smiling on us with all of its warmth. Humpty Dumpty is sitting in the garage, the fuel gauge shows E from the last ride. A full tank of gas and we are good to go. Speaking of go we have a lot of great events coming up in the next couple of months to use that gas up on. So starting in April.. April 11 is going to be our first chapter ride of the year. I am so excited I can hardly wait. I don t know where we are going but as long as there is pavement in front of my front tire I am ready to go. Al is working on details and they will be forthcoming. April 13 is Cooks night out. This month we will be eating at La Carretta located at 61 Weaver Blvd., Ste. B, Weaverville, NC. Their number is 828/ This is across from Ingles in Weaver Crossings. We will plan on eating at 6:30. There is going to be a special guest that I know everyone is going to be really excited to see. ME The calendar has shifted enough so that my rotation allows me to attend Cooks night out for the next few months. Ok, you can stop laughing now. If seeing me is not enough to get you there then how about our snow birds, Larry and Jackie. Come on over and help us spread lots of hugs. April 17 is the beginning of the guys ride for This is always a lot of fun and AL is working hard to get us on some super fun roads. See Al s article for details. April 25 is our regular monthly meeting at J&S. The meetings are just not the same if YOU are not there. We have been having good turnouts and let s all continue to support the chapter at these important meetings. As an added bonus, Al is going to be doing a special class on group riding. This should be very informative and you will not want to miss it. Eat at 9:00 and meet at 10:00. J&S in Candler. May 9 will be second Sat ride. Al will be putting together another fun ride and I am sure that everyone will enjoy it. Humpty Dumpty will not be able to make it due to graduation at WCU but trust me we would rather be riding with our NC-I family. Keep watching for the ride details as they will be coming out soon. 7

May 11 will be Cooks night and we are going to a new restaurant. Rather it is a first time for Cooks night out at this location. We will be going to Gondolier, 1360 Tunnel Rd., Asheville. This is located on US 70 across from Veterans Restoration Center. We will be eating at 6:30. May 15 just 4 days later we are leaving for Chattanooga. We will be leaving from McDonalds in Canton (exit 33) at 10 am on Friday morning. Plan on some scenic riding along the streams and woods of NC. The flowers and trees should have come out from their winter hiding places and it will be beautiful. We are going to be staying at the Clairon Inn both nights. Check details at the end of this article. Friday night we will be traveling to the historic downtown area to enjoy some fine food, shopping and music. Gordon be sure and bring your dancing shoes since you have all that extra room in your trike. Saturday will be a full day of fun and adventure. It all starts out with a ride on the ducks. These strange vehicles will be taking us on a tour through the city as well as running through some of the water ways. Bring frog toggs although we hope that you won t need them. At least not for the ducks. A ride up Lookup Mountain will be a must for you camera buffs. It is an interesting place with different things to do and see besides the great views. As we put Lookout Mountain in the rear view mirror the back roads beckon our Wings. Al is going to show you some of the best riding roads in middle Tennessee. Returning to the Clairon we will freshen up for the evening meal. I don t want to give away too much other than to say that you are going to have a good evening with lots of fun with your NC-family. Sunday will be another full fun day of riding back home. After this event, you will have stories to share and make up about your weekend in Chattanooga. May 23 is memorial weekend. This is when we take time to honor our men and women who have served that we might enjoy the freedoms that we have. We have a lot of vets in our NC-I family and to each and every one of you we say THANK YOU. There is a major ride every year to Washington DC to honor our veterans. The ride is called Rolling Thunder and Tillman/Janet, Jim/Carmen and I are planning to attend. If you are interested in going let me know, there is always room for one more. May 23 is also the day of our monthly meeting. It will be at J&S in Candler, eat at 9 and meet at 10. Al Warren ACD will be conducting this meeting. It looks like I have gotten a little long winded this month. Oh well, get those Wings gassed up and enjoy the ride and just. 9 MOTEL INFO MAY 2015 COUPLES RIDE So here is the final plan. Fri we will ride to Chattanooga and check into the Clarion Inn. We will then visit the historic district for some shopping, food and music. Sat morning we have arranged a special tour on the Ducks at 10 am. This tour will take us around Chattanooga including through various ponds and the river. These Ducks are converted landing craft from the D-day invasion. At noon we will have lunch together. We will then travel to Lookout Mountain where we do some sightseeing. The afternoon will consist of a ride through the back roads of Tn. Returning to the Clarion Inn for a brief time of relaxing and rest. The evening will consist of a nice dinner full of fun and laughter plus telling a few stories, some true and others will you know. After spending the night at the Clarion Inn, Sun will have us winding our way back home. I hope that everyone will join us for a great time. Right now we have 16 planning to go. Again I apologize for the motel mix-up. If you have not done so cancel your reservation at Country Inn & Suites in Chattanooga and Microtel Inn in Franklin. Make your new reservations at: Clarion Inn 3641 Cummings Hwy Chattanooga, TN 423/ or 423/ You must tell them you are with GWRRA Asheville Book for Fri 5/15/15 and Sat 5/16/15 If you have any questions please call me at 828/ David Smith MEC NC-I 9

Information about Chattanooga Trip Hello everyone, Today has been a good day here at the Smith household. It was sunny and warm and so Dianne and I got out on Humpty Dumpty and put on a pile of miles today. It was great and a real break that we needed. Many of you have been most complementary to us concerning the overnight trips that we have put together. For the Chattanooga trip the original plan was to ride to Chattanooga on Fri night and lay over there. Then on Sat we had planned some special events ending with a nice ride over to Franklin, TN where we planned a nice dinner and play. As the plans began to come together there was some concern as to the availability of motels in the areas where we wanted to stay. Therefore, I made the decision that we line up our motels and get reservations done before all the event details had been worked out. I sent out a notice to book a room at the Country Inn & Suites (423/ ) in Chattanooga and at Microtel Inn (828/ ) in Franklin. If you have already made reservations at either or both of these motels, you will need to cancel them. My apologies for your having to do this. As the final plans came together I found out that Franklin was not doing a play the night we were scheduled to be there. The daytime plans in Chattanooga also fell through. That activity was on the upside of cost and they wanted paid up front. There was no refund only a rain date if any bad weather occurred and the activity could not go on as planned. I did not agree to those terms and therefore another activity was selected. The new and improved plan is that we are going to spend both Fri and Sat nights at the same motel in Chattanooga. In conversation with Country Inn & Suites, where we had planned to spend Fri night, it was decided that we would stay there again on Sat. night. The problem we encountered was that they were booked full on Sat night and could not accommodate us. Not wanting to lose our business, they suggested that we book our rooms for the two nights at one of their sister hotels. The motel that we are going to is the Clarion Inn. The Clarion Inn is an upgrade motel and the rooms are $30 more per night. As a special accommodation to us they are going to give us the original room rate of $69 a night. This is an excellent rate and we are grateful to them for working on this with us. 10

THE GUYS RIDE Good morning, gentlemen Each of you has indicated that you were definitely going on the Guys Weekend, or maybe, or perhaps I haven t heard from you yet. In any case, I wanted to get the information out to you so you could get your reservations made in time to go with us. Since the NASCAR race at Bristol threw a kink into my plans earlier, with some recommendations from others we have got what I think is going to be a great weekend planned. Here are the particulars: Friday: Leaving from the McDonalds at Weaverville at 9:30 a.m. and heading ultimately to Cave City, KY, where we will spend Friday night. (Motel details at the end of this ) Saturday: Touring Mammoth Cave in the morning, then heading back across southern KY to spend Saturday night in Middlesboro, KY. Sunday: Riding home; should be home by early afternoon. As much as possible, the roads will be back roads, or at least less-traveled roads, with as many curves and hills as we can find. KY has some beautiful roads for bikers, so I m sure that we ll enjoy them wherever we are. I am including a link to the Mammoth Cave website which lists the various tours that are available to us. Since we will plan to head back homeward by noon on Saturday, there are only a couple of tours that should be considered. 1. The Frozen Niagara Tour lasts for 1-1/4 hour, is ¼ mile in length with 12 stairs to climb. It starts at 9:15, so you would be back about 10:30. Cost is $13/person. 2. The Historic Tour lasts 2 hrs, is 2 miles in length with 440 stairs to climb. It starts at 9:00 and returns about 11:00. Cost is $14/person. 3. The Domes and Dripstones Tour lasts 2 hrs., is ¾ mi in length with about 500 stairs. It starts at 9:30, returning about 11:30. Cost is $15/person. 4. An alternative may be the Star Chamber Tour with lasts 2-1/2 hrs, is 1-1/2 miles and 200 stairs. Cost of that is $14/person. It is an evening tour beginning at 5:30 pm Friday. We ll try to get there before that so that anyone who might want to go on that one could make it. No promises, though, as I have never been there and don t know exactly how far it is nor how long it will take to get to Cave City. There are some other tours listed but they last into the afternoon and we will be leaving by noon to head back eastward. The website recommends that reservations be made ahead of time so that there are enough places in the tour. Here s the link to the website: Use Ctrl-Click to access it. For tour details, select Cave Tours and Spring 2015 from the menu on the left of the home page. Now for the motel information. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU MAKE RESERVATIONS YOURSELF BEFORE NEXT TUESDAY. I am going to just paste in the information from David Newman, who was kind enough to do the searching and calling of motels for us. Thanks for your help, David. Under my credit card I reserved 10 rooms at each of the below 2 motels for Friday and Saturday, April, reserved in the name of the Gold Wing Road Riders: Cave City, Ky: Super 8 Motel, 799 Mammoth Cave St; : Total w/tax: $74.95: AAA / AARP; complimentary breakfast (cereal, coffee, juice, waffles, eggs, bagels, sausages) Middlesboro, Ky: Days Inn, 1623 Cumberland Ave: : Total w/tax: $64.51: AAA / AARP; complimentary breakfast (cereal, bagels, coffee, juice) The guys should call to reserve their own room(s) no later than Tuesday, 14 Apr as I'm cancelling my hold on the unreserved rooms the next morning, 15 Apr. Thanks for setting up this ride Al; I'm really looking forward to it. David
