Well, one meeting down! 22 members attended the January Chapter Dinner/Gathering and 18 attended the ride planning meeting. I was glad to see how well both were attended. Fun was had by all! I think we have a pretty good schedule worked out and it is attached at the end of the Newsletter. I want to thank you all for your suggestions and participation. Our next Chapter Dinner is on Thursday, February 2 nd at The Factory Eatery & Spirits at 20 Prospect St., Ballston Spa for 6:30 pm. Hopefully we will be celebrating that Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow and we will be that much closer to riding season. February 5 th is the Superbowl Party at Pileggi s Palace. We will meet you at the new bar! Hoping for another great turn out there. So who do you think will take the trophy? Our next Chapter gathering is on Wednesday, February 15 th and as food for thought, I will be looking for a volunteer to arrange our March dinner meeting, a couple to do a meet the members article and bring back the discussion of the chapter patch. The patch must be no large than 4 and must have at least one of the following on the patch: GWRRA, Gold Wing Road Riders Association or the official logo. Once we have a design we will seek approval from the District Director. Don t forget your Ride in registrations for May if you plan on attending, there is a new revised registration form attached below. Also, please see our information page on the Chapter weekend trip for August to Laconia, NH. Don t forget to remember your special valentine! Paul and Evelyn
Chapter Weekend Trip August 10 to August 13, 2017 Laconia, New Hampshire One item, however, that requires your attention sooner than later is our overnight trip to Laconia New Hampshire on August 10 th 13 th. Yes, we are returning to Dave Smalley s favorite spot, Laconia New Hampshire. The place where his quest for an 1800 was first realized. We initially contacted the current owners Michael and Janet George of the Birchknoll Motel where we stayed our last trip four years ago, the owners offered us reasonable rates, however, we located another resort that has several benefits: 1. It is a minimum, based on accommodation, of $ less for the Thur. Sat. stay. 2. The cabins while rustic also have kitchenette facilities and small grills. 3. Some cabins are large enough for two or three couples or more so folks could share in expenses. Given the preceding we have selected Sun Valley Cottages as our home away from home. Right now they have very good availability of cabins. Since August is a busy time for all resort locations, we would like to have our reservations locked in by February 15 th for people to get an accommodation of their preference. We realize some folks may not want to commit this early to a trip in August, however, we need to get our rooms reserved while they have availability. The tentative schedule for the trip is as follows: Aug 10 th - Leave for Laconia with breakfast and lunch along the way Aug 11 th -Tour the White Mountain area including the Kancamagus Highway Aug11th - Dinner at Weathervane Weir Beach Aug 12 th - Plan your own activity or travel to North Conway for shopping for the co-riders at the outlets and White Horse Motorcycle Gear August 12 th -Dinner cruise on the ship Mt. Washington. Dinner and Rock & Roll Cruise is $57/person. Note: We would need to make reservations for the dinner cruise in May Details to come later. August 13 th Depart for home This is replay of our trip four years ago, so we hope you will join us. The contact information for the motel is: Sun Valley Cottages 686 Endicott St. North (Rt. 3) Weirs Beach, NH Fax: sunvalleycottages@myfairpoint.net When you call mention that you are with Chapter N of the Goldwing Road Riders Association

February /12 GWRRA Rider Education Rider Educators Bob and Kelley Brown Happy Valentine s Day We are still up in the air regarding Rider Education and Leadership seminars and presenters for Kelley and I will work with Eileen Guile and put together a training schedule as soon as possible. As discussed at the January chapter meeting we do need a Medical First Aid and CPR class though. Fifteen of us need the refresher course to maintain our Levels program up to date. If you are not sure if you need the class give me a call or and I will let you know. Tim and Eileen have volunteered to teach the class Saturday February 11 th at The class will be taught at the Saratoga Central Catholic School, 247 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. See the flyer later in the newsletter. Cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. At the January meeting I also asked folks to let us know if they had any ideas for the monthly newsletter. We re always looking for new ideas and we like to cover things of interest to our members. Evelyn D Ambro came up with a great idea and we ran with it this month. She asked us to look into flat tire repairs and sent a link that walks through the process. That link is located a little later in this article along with a few more. When Evelyn sent the idea of writing about flat tire repair it immediately brought back memories of being stranded in Jackson Wyoming with a flat tire back in 1978.
There are a lot worse places to be stranded we know, and it held pressure long enough to make it to town, so we really didn t have much to complain about there either. We were however about 110 miles from home on a Sunday with no motorcycle shops open, no tire repair kit and had not planned on spending the night. In that case we did end up spending the night and getting the tire replaced the next day when the local motorcycle shop opened. In this case it was a slow leak caused by a small screw so we did make it to town and were able to keep the tire inflated enough to find a motel. So what would you do if something similar happens on your next ride? What are the options? You could call for roadside assistance, you probably have Rescue Plus. That could take a while though and we ride in many areas where cell coverage is poor at best. You could pump up the tire and continue to a service station if you have a means of keeping the tire inflated. You could perform a temporary repair to get you to a service station. This could include using a can of fix a flat or similar product - we will talk about that more later. Or you could plug the hole if you have the tools to do so. But is an emergency repair OK to perform on a motorcycle tire? Can a motorcycle tire be repaired or does it have to be replaced? We did some research and here are some of the things we found out. We have included links to the articles if you want to check them out on your own. Most sources don t recommend the can of Fix a Flat" or any similar products. They don t work that well, leave a real mess to clean up and dispite what Fix a Flat says they tend to mess up your Tire Pressure Monitor equipment, and TPMS sensors are not cheap.
The most common recommendation is to Plug the tire. There are differing ideas on plugging motorcycle tires and this link from Motorcycle Garage (MC Garage) contains a great discussion about the options and what some of the manufacturers of motorcycle tires recommend. Not all leaks can be plugged. MC Garage gives some good guidance on what is safe to plug. Obviously you re not going to fix this one! Bottom line is that plugs are the most recommended emergency repair to get you out of the woods - literally. All emergency repairs should be followed up by a professional assessment of the tire and a permenant repair or tire replacement is required. To be considered a permanent repair the inside of the tire needs to be accessable. There aren t many folks that carry equipment to breakdown and repair a Goldwing tire on the road so plan on a visit to a good shop. Please - if you are riding on a plugged tire keep your speed down and try to minimize the stress on the tire. As far as repressurizing the tire there are a few methods for that as well. Portable air compressors are readily available if you have room to carry them. You can also carry CO2 Cartridges, make sure you have enough for the size of your tire though. Kelley and I opted for the Stop and Go Plug kit with a portable compressor. We also have a similar plug kit for our Mazda Miata which doesn t have a spare tire either, it did come with it s own compressor though.
For step by step guidance on plugging a leak follow this link from Revzilla. I am attaching another link here for a very good U-Tube video that shows three different methods to plug a motorcycle tire. The video is about 24 minutes long and we found it very informative. We like the Australian accent too. Let us know what you think of the article and links provided. If you have any interesting flat tire stories bring them to the next monthly meeting. If you are stranded away from home for a while with a flat tire we hope it is in a place as nice as Jackson Wyoming. Don t forget - Dress for the Slide not for the Ride.
