Chapter Weekend Trip August 10 to August 13, 2017 Laconia, New Hampshire One item, however, that requires your attention sooner than later is our overnight trip to Laconia New Hampshire on August 10 th 13 th. Yes, we are returning to Dave Smalley s favorite spot, Laconia New Hampshire. The place where his quest for an 1800 was first realized. We initially contacted the current owners Michael and Janet George of the Birchknoll Motel where we stayed our last trip four years ago, the owners offered us reasonable rates, however, we located another resort that has several benefits: 1. It is a minimum, based on accommodation, of $ less for the Thur. Sat. stay. 2. The cabins while rustic also have kitchenette facilities and small grills. 3. Some cabins are large enough for two or three couples or more so folks could share in expenses. Given the preceding we have selected Sun Valley Cottages as our home away from home. Right now they have very good availability of cabins. Since August is a busy time for all resort locations, we would like to have our reservations locked in by February 15 th for people to get an accommodation of their preference. We realize some folks may not want to commit this early to a trip in August, however, we need to get our rooms reserved while they have availability. The tentative schedule for the trip is as follows: Aug 10 th - Leave for Laconia with breakfast and lunch along the way Aug 11 th -Tour the White Mountain area including the Kancamagus Highway Aug11th - Dinner at Weathervane Weir Beach Aug 12 th - Plan your own activity or travel to North Conway for shopping for the co-riders at the outlets and White Horse Motorcycle Gear August 12 th -Dinner cruise on the ship Mt. Washington. Dinner and Rock & Roll Cruise is $57/person. Note: We would need to make reservations for the dinner cruise in May Details to come later. August 13 th Depart for home This is replay of our trip four years ago, so we hope you will join us. The contact information for the motel is: Sun Valley Cottages 686 Endicott St. North (Rt. 3) Weirs Beach, NH FAX: sunvalleycottages@myfairpoint.net When you call mention that you are with Chapter N of the Goldwing Road Riders Association

He waggled, looked up, looked down, waggled again, but didn't start his back swing. Finally his exasperated partner Mel asked, 'What the hell is taking you so long?' 'My wife is watching me from the clubhouse balcony,' Jeff explained. 'I want to make a perfect shot.' His companion said, 'You don't have a chance in hell of hitting her from here.

June 2017 GWRRA Rider Educators Bob and Kelley Brown Rider Education Here we are writing the June newsletter, how time flies. It seems like just yesterday we were talking about snow and looking forward to some great riding weather. Well so far Kelley and I haven t been able to make any of those group rides. We hope to make the ride this coming weekend though. We have covered many different topics this year and were struggling to come up with ideas for this month s newsletter. After looking back at some of our past articles we decided to re-publish an article from one of our 2012 Newsletters. The topic of the article actually has come up several times during Team Riding and Road Captain courses over the years. Since many of our chapter members weren t able to participate in those classes this year we thought it would be appropriate to include in this newsletter. One other item brought up at our May chapter gathering was First Aid Kits. It was suggested that members carrying a first aid kit should carry the kit in the right side saddle bag for two wheelers and the right side of the center storage area on Trikes. This will make it easier for members to find in the event of an emergency

From the July 2012 Chapter N Newsletter Education is an ongoing process The dedication to rider education and group riding has really helped Chapter N members enjoy some great rides this year. We started out right with an excellent Road Captain Course in April and followed that up with several opportunities to practice during rides in May and June. The rides have varied in length, terrain and group size but all have gone relatively well. The Road Captains have practiced what they learned and so have the other members of the group. We couldn t do that without everyones commitment to safe riding and education. That doesn t mean we didn t have any problems, it means we don t ignore issues when they are identified. Instead we analyse the situation, develop a possible solution, train our members and evaluate the outcome. On our trip to Cooperstown in June we did have a minor collision between a guests two wheeler and a members trike. By minor I mean no one was hurt and all riders were able to complete the ride. I am sure the trike owner doesn t feel the ride went all that well now that he is going to need to contact his insurance company and arrange for body panel repairs. As group members we all have a responsibility to avoid these unpleasant and avoidable problems. This incident occurred during one of the more difficult parts of any ride. An intersection with a busy road, a stop sign and limited visibility. While coming to the stop sign and looking left for traffic, before proceding with a right turn into traffic, the two wheeler lost track of the trikes position just in front of him. When he thought it was clear to proceed (no oncoming traffic) he failed to notice the trike

still at the stop sign in front of him. By the time he noticed the trike it was too late to stop and he hit the rear right fender of the trike, cracking the fiberglass. To reduce the likely hood of this type of incident going forward the Chapter has added some additional items to our pre-ride brief and we will be discussing the following at the next several meetings. This should help reduce or eliminate these minor collisions at intersections. We will stress that it is each riders responsibility to ride his/her own ride. They are responsible to be in control of their machine at all times. We will stress that at stop signs it is each riders responsibility to stop and check traffic is clear both oncoming and at the stop sign. There will be no pressure for a quick stop and go. The group can always reform after the intersection if other traffic splits up the group or it gets too spread out. Safety is the primary concern here. Another contributing factor may have been that the group had informally started to announce all clear on the CB as they navigated an intersection. Thinking it would help the other riders still at the stop. Instead of helping we believe that it is actually causing a false sense of safety and may contribute to the tendency to perform a quick stop and go. The chapter will instead request members NOT make any announcements over the CB as they navigate an intersection unless they see a hazard such as an oncoming vehicle or obstruction. That should keep the airwaves clear for warning announcements and allow each rider/co-rider team to make there own assessment of whether it is clear to proceed. Group riding is very rewarding and enjoyable and that is the reason many of us have joined GWRRA. We must remember however that it is still an individual activity as well. Even though this article was written five years ago it is still applicable and we continue to follow the guidelines above at intersections. We also continue to stress that members must ride there own ride. Don t forget - Dress for the Slide not the Ride. Bob and Kelley Brown Chapter N Educators

Getting to know Bobbi Hardman, Chapter N s MEC As a life-long resident of New York State, I moved around quite a bit during my younger years because of my dad s job. Thanks to him, I was spared big city life and was able to enjoy the scenic countryside and slower pace of upstate New York, which provide me with many fond childhood memories. Once in high school, I was very active in sports, dance and the chess club. I deliberated on whether to go to college or business school and eventually decided to become an administrative assistant. It was a decision that has served me well, as I have over 40 years of experience in my chosen field. I ve worked for major Fortune 500 companies, a millionaire, in academia and banking, the stock market, just to name a few. I m just a few years short of retirement from SUNY and plan to move to the Southwest at that time so that I can ride my bike all year long. Having ridden as a passenger for 7 years, I decided to try soloing on my own bike in When my ex-husband and I split up (he s still my good friend and riding companion), we made a deal that I d help him move if he would teach me how to ride. I took the MSF beginner course and at the same time practicing in a parking lot for a month on my Honda Rebel before venturing out on the road. Within two years of getting my license, I decided to compete in Americade s King and Queen contest on my Honda Shadow VT600 and was crowned 2001 Americade Queen. What an awesome experience that was for that year! That s when I joined GWRRA and have participated with Chapters F, Y, G and now N in every capacity except Chapter Director. My passion is riding my bike; and when I retire, I plan to do a 4-corners USA tour. My goal is to do it on a Goldwing trike with a trailer over a 3-month period. I treasure my family gatherings and love spending time with my mother, daughter and son-in-law, two grandsons, brother, sister-in-law, niece and nephew. I also enjoy dancing, horseback riding, bowling (264 high game), gardening, music and trivia. For a while, I took tap and modern jazz lessons and even competed in a dance competition on Broadway, and my group took 2 nd Place Regional Grand Championship and 1 st Place in our Senior Division. After retiring, I plan on volunteering at animal shelters, the soup kitchen, and will join the Patriot Guard Riders.
