3 The End of a Great Riding Season with Three Home Runs This past Sunday we had our closing ride to the Fire & Ice Restaurant in Middlebury, VT. While we were not able to leave with the Chapter, Gary & Donna and Linda & I met the group at the restaurant. The food was very good as usual and I understand the group, albeit smaller than usual had a great ride over under the guidance of Bob & Kate with Dave & Barb handling the sweep position. We also learned a secret from the waitress. Order an appetizer or sandwich and get the buffet for an additional $6.50 which is usually $14.00 by itself. We followed the group home; we traveled by four wheels and stopped at Mr. Bill s in Lake George for ice cream. We all said our goodbyes and it made me think that it s sad to see the season ending and shortly we will lose a good number of our members to the sunny south as they escape the cold and blustery northeast. It s known as downsizing our wintertime get-togethers. Our closing ride was the third Chapter activity this month which makes this September one of our busiest. We started the month out with a trip to Alexandria Bay. The group had super weather going out on Friday and Evelyn D Ambro got to ride her new bike out. They awoke to a few showers on Saturday but not enough to dampen their spirits. They enjoyed a bit of shopping, a luncheon boat ride and bit of sightseeing. On the way home Sunday while rain threatened they pretty much stayed dry on the way home Sunday. A week later we kicked off the Ride Out with a luncheon cruise on Lake George on the Lac du Saint Sacrement. Forty-one people registered for the cruise and once again we had perfect weather and little or no wind while cruising the lake; unlike last year when people could not spend much time out on deck. In fact, we had exceptional weather all weekend long. Friday night we held our ice cream social and probably set a new record for the fastest consumption of 20 gallons of ice cream donated by Jerry Lebarr the owner of Mr. Bill s Ice Cream in Lake George, South Glens Falls and Wilton. Thanks Jerry. Saturday morning, we started off the day with two groups taking a guided tour to White Face Mountain. The winds were quite gusty at the top of the mountain causing things left on the bikes to blow off, including one young lady s helmet which is now part of the Adirondack Forest. Meanwhile other riders took advantage of the selfguided scavenger hunt. Upon their return to Country Cottages and Motel everyone was treated to a barbeque with enough baked goods prepared by the ladies of Chapter N to put an extra pound or two onto everyone. The silent and Chinese auctions which followed the barbeque provided an opportunity for everyone to win some very nice prizes.

4 Overall it been a pretty good season. Mother Nature has treated us very well this year and we have had some great weather. I am sure we will still have a few more days of great riding as the leaves turn into brilliant shades of red and yellow. Please remember that as the leaves change their colors they also mean a change in seasons is coming. Some things to keep in mind to insure your safe riding: Leaves Falling leaves can present an unassuming hazard. People venturing out to see the fall colors, presenting a couple of hazards. Four wheelers may be a little distracted and not paying attention to the road and further may not see you. Be sure to keep your distance from other vehicles. Also, as the leaves begin to accumulate on the roadway they can be very slick. Whether wet or dry, driving through stacks of leaves can reduce traction, making it difficult to stop. A reduction of speed and awareness can make all the difference. Deer Fall riding can present some particular hazards, none more problematic than deer. As crops are harvested, the area deer can forage is reduced. Additionally, as farm equipment run through the fields, deer are being pushed into other areas and, in many cases, closer to the road. Hunters are also in the timber, pushing deer into other areas. We also have to consider this is the breeding season for deer and the fact they will be running more actively than normal. The best defense is to stay aware, particularly while in rural areas. Scan the roadway and just off of the shoulders and watch for deer crossings. Typically, deer movement will peak at dusk and dawn. Areas where crops or timber are relatively close to the road will present the greatest challenge. These are ideal places for deer to cross and, unfortunately, will provide you the shortest reaction time. Frost Fall in Upstate New York brings variable weather conditions. Often midday temperatures may be warm and comfortable for motorcycle riding, while overnight temperatures may be near freezing. It becomes necessary to be cognizant of frost on the roadway in the early morning hours during the fall. Be sure to pay particular attention for frost on bridge decks or other elevated surfaces, railroad crossings, and in shady areas where the morning sun might not have melted the frost yet.

Last month I talked about some of the hazards of Fall riding, please keep those hazards in mind while planning and conducting those late season rides. If you didn t have a chance to read the article please visit our chapter web site and take a look. The District Rideout went very well, especially from a Rider Education and Safety aspect. Everyone used hand signals, maintained proper positioning and rode their own rides. It is a pleasure to ride with safe courteous and fun people. We did manage to confuse some of the riders in the first group to leave for White Face Mountain however. With Bob Ludwig leading and Bob Brown sweeping the group at first thought Bob was just talking to himself. We will remember to refer to one of us as Rob when we pair up for the next group ride. Something else we learned during the ride was to secure your equipment whenever you leave it unattended. The winds at Whiteface were strong and unpredictable. After returning from a visit to the top of the mountain we discovered some of the

gear had been blown off the bikes by the wind. A good Samaritan had done their best to pick everything up and stow it however one helmet did manage to go over the side of the mountain.

It could still be rolling down the hill for all we know. Luckily one member of the second group did have an extra helmet so everyone was able to ride safely back to the Picnic. Great new Roadway leading to the parking area. Very steep shoulders though! We mentioned at the Chapter meeting in September that we would be scheduling training sessions for the Winter period. Kelley and I intend to work with Tim and Eileen to schedule Rider Education, Leadership and Membership Enhancement Seminars. Please come to the October meeting ready to discuss the topics you are most interested in. We would like to combine the lessons with a lunch for the group. I will also be working with John Van Deusen to schedule a Trike Course or Advanced Riders course in April. John has also said he will be hosting a RCICP (Rider Course Instructor Certification Program) in Syracuse this Spring. If anyone is interested in becoming a Riding Course Instructor please let me know and I will pass that along to John. Depending on my work schedule I will be trying to attend myself.
