July is always a fun filled month starting off with the best small-town celebration in Washington, The Kingston 4 th of July Celebration. What a great family event with music, fireworks, parades and a pancake breakfast at the Yacht Club. I want to give a big thanks to all the people that have signed up to help volunteer on the 4 th of July. You are not only helping KCYC but you are helping the Kingston Community as well. For all of you that helped with the KCYC fund raiser or will be helping at the Pancake Breakfast or the Beer Tent or even cooking up hot dogs for the kids, I say thank you so much! You are really showing the KCYC Spirit. Speaking of community service, The Helen Meredith Award has been awarded to Clint Boxman. In case you don t know the Helen Meredith Award is given to a non-club member for outstanding community service. Clint has been a standout in community service having served as the President of the Rotary amongst other things. If you see Clint around town say thanks, he deserves it. We have some other great activities coming up as well including the annual KCYC Crab Feed. This year we are doing the crab feed on a Sunday afternoon so don t miss out. Also, if you are a crabber we can use some help in getting crabs for the event. Contact Cheryl Callais for more info. The General Meeting will be on Thursday July 20 th. As usual we will have a pot-luck dinner so please bring something to share. We look forward to seeing you around the club house in July. Sincerely, Tony Clark Commodore KCYC 2017 The Best Little Yacht Club in Washington

Rear Commodore s Report At the half way mark for this watch, a quick look at the status of the goals for the Rear Commodore might be in order. There were 12 at the beginning of the watch. Some are on going, but most could be called accomplished. However, there is still more time to improve. Let s look at the first Provide a friendly and fun atmosphere for all aspects of the bar operations. Hopefully this continues to be the #1 goal. If this is not accomplished, we ve lost the battle! 2. Ask and provide reasonable requests of special offerings from the bar. Working with Kim Page, there have been several special Friday night events, even the Robin Colada drink. 3. Contribute the best financial return to the Club s general fund. Over the first 7 months the bar has transferred $7,100 into the General Fund by optimizing ordering from our suppliers, offering wine selections the members want and offering special selections. 4. Expand wine selections and establish a wine list. The wine list has been expanded and is dynamic. The wine by the case program continues to grow. In June the bar sold 7 cases of wine to Club members. A win-win for all. 5. Evaluate beer on tap possibilities. This is still on the radar. 6. Establish a HOW TO manual for the next Rear Commodore. The manual continues to evolve. Initially it contained everything that might be helpful to the next RC. For the rest of this watch, it will be streamlined to organize the information to make the learning curve easier for the next RC. We ll talk about the rest at a later date, so as to not bore everyone! Jerry

Report from the Fleet Nancy Langwith, Fleet Captain After a very busy May, the Poulsbo Cruise, June 2 4, was a little more laid back. We had 4 boats, but 17 for cocktails at Sogno Di Vino on Friday. The Twilight Criterium was exciting and we managed front row seats at the finish line for the first two races and the end of the professional race with cocktails and a pot luck in between. Thank you to all who joined us by car for the various activities. Upcoming KCYC Cruises July October 2017 As always, everyone is welcome! Boaters will receive additional reservation information for each cruise. All will receive additional social event information. July Langley/ La Conner - Friday night Crab Feed Langley. - Saturday travel to La Conner. - Sat and Sun activities in development process. - Note this a long week-end cruise. Aug Port Townsend - Uptown Street Fair and Parade. - Additional activities under development. Sept 1-4 Pleasant Harbor Labor Day - KCYC Olympics! - Note this a long week-end cruise. - Bed and Breakfast lodging available next door. Call Sept 29 - Oct 1 Shilshole - Details will follow closer to the event.

Sunshine and Clouds for June 2017 ARE WE HAVIN FUN YET???? Aloha! It s JULY And we have been been having some hot sunny days! Great for boating and outside events! Be sure to join us this month at the club for all the fun July 4th events! I m sure it will be a BLAST! Thomas Tearnen hopes to get out soon and come see us at the club.. He is battling prostate cancer and a broken foot that required a plate and screws. OMG! Send him and KIM positive thoughts, prayers and lots of love. Deni Lee is still battling ALS...Lou Gehrig s Disease. Feel free to contact Bobby Lee to see if they can use any help. As stated before insurance isn t covering all of her care. Deni would love some visitors. Call to check for a good time. Makoa Saffery (AKA Koko), Dave and Adela Lucas grandson got some fabulous news. His cancer scans are clear. He kicked Cancer s Ass just like he said he would. You go Koko! Another round of meds and he is good to go. Calypso Carol Ray Wetmore

From Tom Davies: July 4th Revisited! We should all be happy our Founding Fathers chose July instead of January to declare our Independence. Think about the 4th of January parade, huge vehicles careening down the street sliding towards the ferry dock on black ice. Poor Miss Kingston, riding on a float, hovering under a parka, trying to smile through smiling teeth while waving to the crowd. Think of the expense of building an indoor arena so we can watch the fireworks in comfort, just another project for the fundraisers. Forth of July includes the pancake breakfast at the KCYC. I reminiscence about past pancake breakfasts. One July 3 preparations are made, sausage cooked, ham sliced, floor covered with butcher paper, and all the electric cords located and tested. Kiddingly I asked Tom Chambers to check the propane. Guess what? We were OUT! Someone had left the oven on and the propane ebbed. We could collect every fry pan in Kingston or call Bobby Lee (then Vice Commodore). Trying to visualize cooking pancakes on the B-B-Q, with the batter leaking all over the coals not an option! Bobby Lee now wears a Superman Badge as he had propane delivered at 0600 on July 4th, phew! The Setting: July 4th, 0700 The Scene: Pancake Breakfast The Players: Pancake Flipper, Batter Beater, Juicer, Servers, Ticket Taker Atmosphere: Oven started, batter beaten by a large turbo engine, large pig on spit waiting to be carved into little sausages and thin slices of ham while the pancake flipper is creating round fluffy morsels, buttplates, plastic wear and syrup stands ready for the onslaught of hungry Kingstonites. The calm before the storm. The clock ticks and 0800 arrives and crowds arrive lining up from the ferry dock and storming through the doors. The Batter Beater s tools are screaming. The Pancake Flippers yelling for more batter, the Servers yelling for more pancakes, and the Bossman shouting commands. The nutritional overachievers anxiously thrust their plates upward, grabbing and clamoring I want my eggs over-runny No eggs Can I have 35 sausages, I need to feed my dog No The griddle sizzled, the pork boiled and the drill drilled. Bossman barked orders and pancakes sailed through the air like flying saucers. Server says Everything seems to be going well Bossman: If everything is going well you obviously overlooked something. Pancakes were being hurled from the deck to the throngs lined up in the parking lot and slabs of ham were fired out with sling-shots approaching and we discovered a special pancake-boat from Seattle had just docked. The Batter Beater s crock was dry, the grill was empty and the pork was depleted. The angry horde was protesting and threatening. Somewhere a bell rang and I woke up and Bette said Time to get up. We have to serve pancakes this morning! my reply But I dreamed I got fired! REMEMBER SOME PEOPLE DRINK FROM THE FOUNTINE OF KNOWLEDGE AND OTH- ERS JUST GARGLE

Where the Heck is Pete? End of June 17 Good Question. In the Coast Guard, a couple of times I patrolled off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire. We pulled in to Portsmouth once to get some fuel but never spent any time on the beach. This is a fascinating part of America. And, it has been around a lot longer than Seattle has! If a visit to New England, and I don t mean Boston is not on your bucket list, sign it up. Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire offer a solidly diverse landscape. The Hamptons provide spacious beaches and ocean front mansions making Bainbridge homes look small. The inland towns are spread way out and many boast of populations smaller than Kingston. But, oh the politics. I can see why the New Hampshire and Vermont presidential primary season unfolds the way it does. Those candidates must visit EVERY little village and if they don t the whole town is slighted. The non-visiting candidate will get little if any support from a place he or she bypassed. Photos in all café s pubs and gas stations show the history from FDR s Campobello retreat in northern Maine to the present. Again, the cemeteries are fascinating. I found the grave of John Percival in Barnstable MA. If the name is not familiar, he was called Mad Jack a famous Naval Officer. Famous for commanding Old Ironsides (USS Constitution) around the globe on her last journey. Next week I will visit the ship in Connecticut. Lobster here is much more plentiful than Dungeness Crab in the Northwest. The season is months long and everyone has a pot. I paid as little as $6 per pound and up to $8.50 for nice live ones I cook in the rig. At restaurants, they are still spendy at about $45 for dinner. But those guys are the big ones over pounds. This guy cost me $9.50

The little ports and harbors are neat places to walk around. A lot of boats moored on anchor buoys and dingy docks are all over the place with a much smaller footprint. Solar battery chargers are everywhere. Boat Building on the east coast is a great business too. I wanted to tour the Hinkley plant in Rockport Maine but they were at a company picnic. Bar Harbor Maine is quite a tourist attraction. It is typical of a seaside seasonal resort town. Lots and lots of hotels, B & B s and campgrounds. Pubs and great restaurants abound. Lobster Rolls, consisting of hotdog bun, lobster meat and mayonnaise sell for $15 to $19 all over the place. They are pretty good though. Most of my book sales happen in pub. Imagine that.

The Hamptons are interesting; there is North Hampton, South Hampton, Hampton, Hampton Beach West Hampton and Hampton Falls. I stayed a week in a camp at Hampton Falls near Exeter. I was able to do the whole neighborhood. Big homes, nice beaches and happy people visiting and having fun. People here have an abbreviated season from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Business is competitive and everyone is trying their best to serve folks. It is also the home of a few championship horses. In a little town called Corea in northern Maine, I drove past the Wind families home. No one was home but I knew where I was from their yard sign.

If you follow me on Facebook, you can see a few more updates and check in s I went back to Cape Cod to meet up with some friends from my Ecuador experience a few years ago. Yesterday I returned to Woods Hole for lunch at Captain Kidd s. It was worth the drive. Last time I was there, it was raining sideways. Yesterday was perfect and the town was packed with tourists. I chose not to take the ferry to Martha s Vineyard. Walk on space is booked several days in advance. I could have taken the car gut the $175 round trip was a little out of my budget. To take the RV over it would cost around $350 and RV sites there and Nantucket are in the mid hundreds per night. They are also booked up for weeks in advance. Next week I am headed towards New London and Mystic Seaport. And will then start working my way south through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC. More old shipmates and friends all over the place there. Maggie is a real trooper. She rolls with the punches and we are getting good at finding Dog Friendly Beaches. Not all of them are. Work keeps progressing on the sequel to Heave To. Lots of my old friends have taken up residence in my brain again. That s always fun! Wishing all of you a wonderful 4 th of July. I will have to have pancakes for breakfast and open up that jug of Vermont Maple Syrup. Have a great time and be safe. I will be watching fireworks near the river in front of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Pete
