1 FL-2D HARBOR CITY BEACON Melbourne, Florida October 2008 GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOC. HELLO THERE, I guess I m officially your new Chapter Director. It s been a short eight years as ACD s (and as the old saying goes; time goes by fast when your having fun) and Mike and I had a big time! As I ve said before taking over the position of chapter director is both sad and exciting for us, the sad part is Harry & Lynn stepping down. The exciting part is knowing that all you guys will be there for us, I have great respect for each and everyone of you. Through the years when the chapter needed help in anyway you guys volunteered your time, money, and anything else that was needed to get the job done. Harry and Lynn will be a tough act to follow. I will do my best to maintain the same ethical standards that has come to be expected of this chapter. We are coming to the time of the year where we will be very busy, and I will need all the support this great chapter is known to provide. Looking forward to the cruise in Nov., the annual Christmas party in Dec which is always a fun time for all, and our four chapter breakfast in Jan., just to name a few. Plus, all the kick tires and chapter rides that Bill Harris plans and coordinates for us. For those of you that missed the Dothan trip we really dodged the rain going. It was either behind us or just rained ahead of us all the way there. We left Wed. afternoon with 5 bikes two bikes left Wed. morning. 2 off I-10 and spent the night. Ask Mo how the Huddle House was!!! We arrived Thurs around noon. Mike and I had a good time you ll have to ask the other 12 how they enjoyed the rally. It was another story coming back thought we were going to roast. It was HOT!!! We welcomed the rain just outside Holo Paw. Had such a good turn out at That Little Restaurant we almost took over the whole place. I ll close with ride safe and long, Charlotte $ She s a WINNER! 1. Only in America...can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance. 2. Only in America...are there handicap parking places in front of our skating rinks. 3. Only in America...do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions, while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front. 4. Only in America...do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a Diet Coke. 5. Only in America...do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. 6. Only in America...do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. 7. Only in America...do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place. 8. Only in America...do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. 9. Only in America...do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

For weeks in advance, he coached his patients to respond to his commands. When the day of the game arrived, everything seemed to be going well. As the national anthem started, the doctor yelled, "Up nuts!" and the inmates complied by standing up. After the anthem he yelled, "Down Nuts!" and they all sat down. After a home run he yelled, "Cheer nuts!" and they all broke into applause and cheers. Thinking things were going very well, he decided to go get a beer and a hot-dog, leaving his assistant in charge. When he returned there was a riot in progress. Finding his assistant, he asked what happened, "what in the heck is going on"?. The assistant replied, well...everything was fine until some guy walked by and yelled, "PEANUTS"!!!

4 Safety Educator BRINGING BACK STREET STRATEGIES Just this past month, while coming back from Dothan, I witnessed a very good lesson in progress. A fellow on a Goldwing, and an experienced rider I might add, pulled into a gas station and got in line behind a truck pulling a cargo trailer. Both he and the truck were waiting in line to get gas. The next thing you know, the bike rider is yelling, and once everyone else sees what is ensuing, everyone else starts yelling also. The truck driver had decided that he was not going to wait in this line and was backing up to move to another pump. He could not see the motorcycle behind him because of the trailer hiding the motorcycle, and the motorcyclist had turned off his ignition and did not have time to start it up to blow his horn. Luckily, the other patrons were able to get the drivers attention before he backed into the bike. Street Strategies.. In GWRRA we spend a lot of time on talking and walking Safety & Education. CPR, First Aid, ERC, Parking Lot Practices, Group Riding, Road Captains, etc.. Unfortunately, I don t feel that we talk enough about the fundamentals of good ole street strategies. Reminding ourselves of the basics of riding single. Motorcycles are the IN thing. With gas prices going up, many more bikers have entered into the everyday commute. Mopeds and smaller bikes are selling as fast as the dealers can get them in. Pay attention to the daily commute and you ll notice more and more motorcycles being used as a form of transportation. In fact, where I work, we have now created a motorcycle parking area only, since there are so may more of our employees riding to work everyday and they need a safe place to park away from 4 wheelers. NOW, that should tell you something right there!!! Motorcycles are at risk even when they are parked. It took two incidents where parked motorcycles were hit by cars before we implemented the motorcycle parking only area!!! Even in a parking lot, motorcycles are not very well seen. You think that it is better on the open road?!? What are Street Strategies? Street Strategies are not intuitive, that is, they don t come naturally. They are taught, and have to be practiced every day so that they do become second nature. They are strategies when riding single; everyday strategies for reducing the risk and not getting into a no win situations. For example, one would think that all riders should know what lane position, when riding single, to ride when on the interstate. Your in the left lane of I-95 traveling north in heavy traffic. What position in the lane do you take, and why? The main concepts of Street Strategies are See and Be Seen, Space Cushion, Time and Distance Management, Scanning, Predicting, Acting/Execution, T-Clock, Targeting. If these terms do not immediately mean anything to you, then it is time to start asking serious questions. These should be fundamental building blocks of your riding education. Another example. When you coming to a stop at a four lane intersection, what are your natural sequence of events? First of all, you saw that you were coming to and intersection, anticipated that the light was going to turn red, covered your brake and clutch levers along with the foot brake, the light turned red, your eased on front and rear brakes, pulled clutch in, downshifted to neutral, and planted your left foot to the roadway to complete the stop. Then smiled at the gorgeous redhead in the convertible to your left. What two things were done worng??? Smiling at the redhead was not one of them. I m assuming you are not with your co-rider There should be no delay in your answer. What is the most dangerous part of a rain storm? At what speed does a motorcycle start to hydroplane? What is SIPDE? What is SPA? What is SEE? If any of these questions cannot be answered without hesitation, it is time to have a refresher. Time to ask questions. You are never too old or too experienced to ask a question. In the past 17 years with GWRRA, I have spent a lot of time taking advantage of the safety courses and then taking that knowledge and experience and giving back to my fellow riders what I have learned. And most importantly, I have learned that I am far from finished learning. I continue to forget the simple lessons and that I have to be reminded over and over again. So over the next few months, I plan to get back to the basics and hope that you will join with me. Remember, Smooth Transitions!!! (I assume that you know what smooth transitions mean and why!) A passerby commented to the blind man, "What! That dog just went to the bathroom all over your legs, and you are petting him?! Are you crazy?" To which the blind man replied, "Madam, I am not petting him, I am feeling for his bottom, so I can kick him." Two guys, Joe & Bill went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, they fell sound asleep. Some hours later, Joe wakes his faithful friend and says, "Bill, look up at the sky and tell me what you see." Bill replies, "I see millions of stars." "What does that tell you?" asked Joe. Bill ponders for a minute, and then says, "Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies, and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small, and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Joe?" Joe is silent for a moment, then says, "Bill, you idiot! Someone has stolen our tent"!

10 Completed Events During September 2008 September 2 Business Meeting Our September business meeting was again at Lizzie s Bistro, 1851 Palm Bay Rd. We had a good turnout of about 29 Gold Wing enthusiasts. This was Harry s last official meeting as Chapter Director. Charlotte and the staff presented Harry with a gift of an all expenses paid trip to the Region A Rally in Dothan. September 6 Poker Run - This Poker Run was for the Organ Transplant organization that gave a presentation at our August meeting. There were 10 Chapter members present. The run started at the Palm Bay Harley dealer, went to Earl s in Sebastian, then to New England Seafood in Melbourne Beach, next to Long Doggers in Indialantic, then on to Twin Boar Deli & BBQ on Palm Bay Rd, and finally back to the Harley Dealer. After the ride, there was a long list of door prizes given out. Everyone had a great time and helped out a deserving charity. Pictures are attached. September Region A Rally A large group made the ride to Dothan Alabama for the Region Rally. Additional details are presented elsewhere in this Newsletter. September 16 Kick-Tire The Kick-Tire for September was held at That Little Restaurant on Wickham Rd. There was a large turn-out of 20 people. Everyone seems to have a good time and the food was excellent. Pictures are attached. September 20 Cedar Key - The ride planned through the hills of Hernando County and on to Cedar Key for lunch was cancelled due to lack of interest. This is a beautiful but long ride. If anyone is ever interested in making the journey, contact me. Bill Harris Ride Coordinator Whoo. Watch our for the lip When your going down.. It s too late for the gloves. Who plans on falling? 14 GREENVILLE RALLY Our representatives: Larry Hicks and Ray Mercier

15 Three golfing partners died in a car wreck and went to heaven. Upon arrival they discover the most beautiful golf course they have ever seen. St. Peter tells them that they are all welcome to play the course, but he cautions them that there is only one rule: Don't hit the ducks. The men all have blank expressions, and finally one of them asks "The ducks?" "Yes", St. Peter replies, "There are millions of ducks walking around the course and if one gets hit, he squawks then the one next to him squawks and soon they're all squawking to beat the band, and it really breaks the tranquility. If you hit the ducks, you'll be punished, otherwise everything is yours to enjoy." After entering the course, the men noted that there was indeed a gaggle of ducks everywhere. Within fifteen minutes, one of the guys hit one of them. The duck squawked, the one next to it squawked and soon there was a deafening roar of duck quacks. St. Peter walked up with an extremely homely woman in tow and asked "Who hit the duck?" The one who had done it admitted "I did." Immediately, St. Peter pulled out a pair of handcuffs and cuffed the man's right hand to the homely woman's left hand. "I told you not to hit the ducks," he said. "Now you'll be handcuffed together for eternity. The other two men were very cautious not to hit any ducks, but a couple of weeks later, one of them accidentally did. The quacks were as deafening as before and within minutes St. Peter walked up with an even uglier woman than before. St. Peter determined which one had hit the duck by the fear in his face, and cuffed the man's right hand to the homely woman's left hand. "I told you not to hit the ducks", he said. "Now you'll be handcuffed together for eternity." The third man was extremely careful. Some days he wouldn't even move for fear of even nudging a duck. After three months of this he still hadn't hit a duck. St. Peter walked up to the man at the end of the three months and had with him a knock-out gorgeous woman, the most beautiful woman the man had ever seen. St. Peter smiled to the man and then, without a word, handcuffed him to the beautiful woman and walked off. The man, knowing that he would be handcuffed to this woman for eternity, let out a sigh and said "What have I done to deserve this?" The woman responded "I don't know about you, but I hit a duck." A special thanks to our members who submit articles. We love the support and the good information. Send them to Richard Mitts rm32904@yahoo.com Word documents are preferred.
