1 Newsletter of Harbor City Wings Melbourne, Florida Gold Wing Road Riders Association NOV 2012 Happy Thanksgiving to you all, With the Holiday Seasons approaching and the influx of traffic (snow birds), we all need to be extremely careful on the highways. More traffic means more folks that "don't see us" (motorcycles). Please be careful through the seasons and be careful of the wind as that is equally dangerous. We just had one of our own wreck because of the wind. Harry Anderson wrecked less than a mile from his home on his scooter. He is busted and skinned up some. Please keep him in your thoughts to help him heal. On January 1 we will be going to Shrimps are us for our annual ride, this is a wonderful ride and great food. This is a restaurant in Waletka Florida that opens for GWRRA. Everyone is welcome and invited. They have a buffet of great shrimp and chicken, salad and dessert. Please join us as we usually have a great turn out. All the chapters in Florida converge on this place and chow down. This past month Barb and I were at our place in West Virginia and then went to Lake Lure North Carolina for a mini vacation. The leaves were colorful and the weather was in the low 60's during the day. 2 was too rainy. We only rode one day. In North Carolina we put some miles on. I just talked with Glenn and Betty and they went to Ft. Lauderdale. Glen went scuba diving after his recent certification. His description of what he experienced and saw is inspiring. Please share with us things you and your loved ones have done. It is a great ice breaker. In November, Barb and I will be traveling to West Virginia to see our son and grandchildren as well as do some hunting. With any luck I will have some wild game to share with you if you like. Don Totsi has already put dibs in on some squirrel. Just a reminder, with the fuel prices down, the weather cooling off, everyone should be taking advantage of this by getting out on the motorcycles. I would like to ask for you all to join us on rides and such during this great weather. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Steve and Barb Squires CHAPTER DIRECTORS A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says,"i hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough. "Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her." Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this," She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way." 2

When they got to about the middle of the graveyard they were startled and stopped moving. There was this terrifying noise, TAP-TAP-TAP coming from the shadows. Trembling with fear, they spotted an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones. "Holy cow Mister, one of them said after catching his breath. You SCARED us half to death. We thought you were a GHOST! What are you doing working here so late at night?" "Those fools!" the old man grumbled. "They misspelled my name!!" 3

She gets into the cab, and the cab driver won't stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring. He replies: "I have a question to ask you, but I don't want to offend you". She answers, "My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive." "Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me." She responds, "Well, let's see what we can do about that. But first, you have to be single and you must be Catholic." The cab driver is very excited and says, "Yes, I'm single and Catholic!" "OK" the nun says. "Pull off to the side of the road, "maybe we will see what we can do." The nun plants a whopper of a kiss on the cabbie! But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. "My dear child," said the nun, why are you crying?" "Forgive me, but I've sinned. I lied. I must confess, I'm married and I'm Jewish." The nun says, "That's OK, my name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween party." 4

5 Safety Educator Distracted Driving in the United States and Europe Distracted drivers are compromising their own and other peoples' safety behind the wheel. Nearly 15 people die each day in the United States in crashes that involve distracted driving, and another 1,200 people are injured. 1 Distracted driving involves driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. Distracted driving activities include things like using a cell phone, texting, eating, drinking, and talking with passengers. Using in-vehicle technologies (such as navigation systems) and portable communication devices can also be sources of distraction while driving. Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it combines visual, manual and cognitive distractions. Driving while distracted is serious and life-threatening, not just to you and your passengers, but also to others on the road. In 2009, more than 5,400 people were killed and an additional 448,000 were injured in crashes that were reported to involve driving while distrated. 1 Among those killed or injured in these crashes, nearly 1,000 deaths and 24,000 injuries included cell phone use as the major distraction. 1 A recent CDC analysis examined the frequency of cell phone use and texting while driving in the United States and several countries within Europe. 2, 3 Talking on cell phone: United States: Overall, 25% of drivers in the United States reported that they talk on their cell phone "regularly" or "fairly often" while driving. 2 Younger age groups had higher use, with nearly 40% of those ages 18 to 29 reporting that they talk on their cell phone "regularly" or "fairly often" while driving. 2 Older drivers were less likely to report cell phone use while driving; only 8% of those aged 60 or older reported talking on cell phones "regularly" or "fairly often" while driving. 2 Europe The percentage of European drivers who reported using the cell phone "regularly" or "fairly often" while driving ranged from 21% in the Netherlands to 3% in the United Kingdom. 3 T-CLOCK CHECK : Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights and electrics, Oil and fluids, Chassis, Kickstand. 5

6 Texting United States Overall, 9% of drivers in the United States reported that they "regularly" or "fairly often" text or while driving. 2 More than a quarter of 18 to 29 year-olds reported texting or ing "regularly" or "fairly often" while driving. 2 Only 3% of drivers aged 60 or older reported ever having texted or ed while driving. 2 Europe Overall, the percentage of drivers who reported texting or ing "regularly" or "fairly often" while driving ranged from 10% in the Netherlands to 1% in the United Kingdom. 3 The percentage of drivers who text or while driving was higher among drivers aged 18 to 29 than other age groups from 13% in Portugal to only 3% in the United Kingdom. 3 Distracted driving is an important and growing public health concern. Some states have enacted laws that ban the use of cell phones while driving, or that ban texting while driving. Regardless of what state you live in, all drivers on the road have a personal responsibility to give their full attention to the driving task when behind the wheel. 6

There I was, on my scooter, on my ride over to the beach at 6:30 in the morning, when out of the bushes, running across the street, right in front of me, was this naked lady. I immediately reached to cover my eyes, and spilled my coffee all over my., and the next thing I knew. I FALL DOWN! I don t know, he covered his eyes? 15

19 Mr. Barns, a city slicker from New York, bought a pumpkin patch. He thought that he could make more money with chickens than the previous owner made with pumpkins. So, he went to a poultry farm and bought 50 chickens. 50 is a lot of chickens for that little pumpkin patch, commented the farmer. I am used to BIG business, Mr. Barns replied. A week later Mr. Barns returned. I need another 50 chickens, he told the farmer. The farmer replied, Boy, you sure are serious about this chicken farming. Oh yes, Mr. Barns replied. I just need to iron out a few problems with these new chickens. Problems? asked the farmer. Yeah, said Mr. Barns, I think I planted the first batch too close together. As an early Christmas present, a man gets a talking parrot from his friend. He takes the parrot home and puts it in his living room. But every time the man goes near the living room, he hears the parrot shouting insults at him. In desperation, he puts the parrot in the freezer. After a few minutes, the insults stop. Thinking he might have killed the parrot, he takes it out of the freezer. The parrot is still alive, but it is shivering. It stammers, "I'm s-sorry for b-b-being s-so rude. P-p-please forgive m-me." So the man forgives him. After a while the parrot asks, "What exactly did the turkey do?" A special thanks to our members who submit articles. We love the support and the good information.
