Jason Fabbi is the wagon master, call him for details at There is an impromptu unofficial field trip to McDermitt, NV starting June 22nd. Check with Peggy Sue Moore for details. These may be the last until fall with the hot temperatures in July and August. Last year it was late September before we planned another one. The hot months are a good time to come to the shop and work on the rocks you ve collected this past year, make some beautiful cabochons. The shop is doing great, all machines are in good shape. Many thanks to Del Walkenshaw, Wayne Muth, Tony Duran, Gary Webb, Chopper and the others that chipped in. When we got back with the truck from Boulder City, Chops, Gary Webb and the young guys Chops brought with him to help all pitched in and cleaned up the show items and placed them back in the storage room. It really looks good. Don t forget the Nominations for Lifetime Memberships. They need to be in by September for the Board to review. A Nominee must be a member for ten years with no breaks and hold an office in the club. If you bring any rocks to the shop, make sure to fill out a card with your name, date and who they are for. One of our members is moving to North Carolina and brought his rocks to the shop for all club members. Come on down and pick out a rock or two. He collected them in and around Delta, Utah and they appear to be all cab quality. A couple of things in July: Sunday, July 8th: Supervisors Meeting 10 am to 12pm at the shop. Sunday, July 15th: Shop Clean Up 10 am to 11 am. Bob Belcher President SNGMS June 2018

Sunday, July 8th, 10 am 12 pm, Shop Supervisors Meeting: Sunday, July 15th, 11 am 11 am, Shop Clean Up Birthstones for the Month of June are Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite: Pearl is a hard glistening object produced within the soft tissue of a living shelled mollusk or another animal. It actually belongs to the marine animal kingdom. but most people consider them precious stones. A pearl is composed of calcium carbonate ( CaCO3) in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. A pearl necklace is believed to warn sensitive people of imminent danger. Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminum silicate with the chemical formula (Na,K)AlSi 3 O 8 and belongs to the feldspar group. Moonstone has been used in jewelry for millennia, including ancient civilizations. The Romans admired moonstone, as they believed it was born from solidified rays of the Moon. It has always been the stone of love and lovers. Alexandrite belong to the chrysoberyl family (BeAl2O4) with a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale. The three main varieties of chrysoberyl are: ordinary yellow-to-green chrysoberyl, cat's eye and alexandrite. Alexandrite will show emerald green, red and orange-yellow colors depending on viewing direction in partially polarized light. It promotes inner harmony, joy and cheerfulness for the wearer.

After adjournment six Board members approved the purchase of a 16 saw blade. Shop Talk : Brad s Bench Tips REVOLVING SOLDER PAD Often when we're soldering we have multiple pieces on the pad or a single piece and would like to work on several sides of it during the same heat. One of the ways to deal with this is to put your solder pad onto a turntable. That way you can rotate each piece into position when you need to or can rotate the pad to reach another side of a larger piece. All you need to make one of these is a piece of aluminum sheet and an inexpensive turn table assembly. A good hardware store will have both, although you can usually find the aluminum in the scrap pile of a local sheet metal shop. (Continued On Page 7)

7 June 2018 the polished slab PAGE 7 Shop Talk : Brad s Bench Tips (continued from pg 3) To build a turntable for my 6 inch solder pad, I used a seven inch square piece of aluminum sheet and cut out 1/2 inch notches from each corner. Then I used a bench vice to bend the sides along the dotted lines to form a tray that cradles the solder pad. I attached the tray to the turntable assembly with a couple small flat-head machine screws and nuts. QUENCHING Do you hear that little hiss when some jewelers drop a hot piece from soldering directly into the pickle? That hiss sends small droplets of acid into the air that can rust nearby tools and can't be all that good to breathe. To avoid this, I keep a coffee cup of water at the solder station to cool a soldered piece before dumping it into the pickle. It's also useful for annealing metals and for cooling off tweezers. NEW BENCH TIPS BOOK For those who enjoy these bench tips, I'm happy to announce a second volume is now available on Amazon. "More Bench Tips" includes 86 additional ways to save time, avoid frustration or improve quality at the bench. These new tips cover problems in fabrication, stone setting, casting, soldering and polishing. Browse through a couple of the new ones at For more tips or to learn new jewelry skills see Amazon.com/author/bradfordsmith
