The New Year is upon us and it is already mid-january. I have to admit that I just took down our Christmas tree last week! I was enjoying it too much or just was unmotivated to do the deed. THLU s first rally of the year will soon be upon us. Right now, between rigs are signed up to meet at the Matagorda Nature Park at the mouth of the Colorado River south of Matagorda, TX beginning Thursday, February 5 (or Wednesday, February 4 if you want to arrive a little early). A great team of THLU members has signed up to no-host this rally. A tentative schedule is shown later in this newsletter. As of this writing, there are 12 sites still available in the south loop of the park where THLU will be. Reservations can be made at ReserveAmerica.com. I recently received a note from our Region 9 President, Andy Selking. He wrote to let me and other unit presidents know that Jim Courtney tendered his resignation as First Vice-President of Region 9 due to Jim s ongoing health problems. Andy is asking all units if anyone is willing to step up and take on that First Vice-President role for In addition to the First Vice- President position, the Second Vice- President spot is also open. President s Message Continued on Page 3 Airstreamer s New Years Resolutions Travel to a new destination Maintain my Airstream Eat at a famous restaurant Visit historic sites Make new friends Volunteer in my unit Give service to the community Be thankful for life s blessings Make healthy choices Share my adventures with others

3 3 PARTY LINE and PRAYERS/CONCERNS Dale Burger had a negative change in blood test results for lymphoma at a recent doctor s visit. His doctor wants to stay on top of things so Dale will return for tests in six weeks to see if treatment is needed. Jim and Janie Haddaway are traveling to Louisville, KY to attend the funeral of Jim s 32 year old grandson. Sybil McNeely has returned to work at the Houston VA Hospital. She and husband, Arliss, are living in their Airstream. Stephanie Sobotik and Julie Jordan said I Do on January 15. Congratulations and best wishes. Steven and Kelly Sosland have started building their home in Fredericksburg which should be finished in July. Kelly has a Habitat build this September in the UP and will drop off their leaking Airstream in Jackson Center on her way. Their youngest daughter, Bekah, will be married near Wimberley in July. Their oldest, Rachel, is in her residency at Vanderbilt and working 95 hour weeks! Doug and Kyong Draves moved to the state of Washington and now live off the grid on 200 acres of forested land. Doug retired and they plan to manage their forest, harvest some to supplement their retirement income and look for some gold. Doug had a cancer surgically removed from his tongue and after a serious trip to the hospital, is now doing well. They enjoyed their time with THLU and look forward to joining a new unit closer to home. Jim and B Bailey hit a patch of black ice while traveling in south Texas. Their truck and Airstream are totaled but thankfully they are both well. They want to replace their trailer, and would appreciate any news of Airstreams available for sale in the unit or otherwise. Jim Courtney continues his battle with cancer. Please keep Jim & Vickie in your thoughts and prayers as they focus on getting Jim healthy and strong so they can start to travel again. Thank you Jim and Vickie for all the hard work you have done for Region 9! Ben Covington, former member, has been hospitalized in St. David s Hospital and placed under hospice care. Betty, who just turned 80, is now living with her son, Frank, in Austin. President s Letter cont d So, I ask everyone in THLU to consider these opportunities to volunteer your services for either of these Region positions and in so doing meet new folks, travel Region 9, attend great rallies, participate in the ongoing growth and direction of our Region, and have great fun doing so. 5 5 SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN ADOPTED AS NEW SERVICE PROJECT On New Years Day, those watching the Rose Parade saw the Shriners Hospitals float titled, A Million Stories of Hope and Healing. The float focused on story books representing Shriners Hospitals for Children s patient success stories. Each page depicted the realization of the hopes and dreams of a child made possible by the encouragement and strength they found at Shriners. It also tells the story of the more than one million children Shriners Hospitals has cared for since Shriners Hospitals for Children has a mission to: Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment. Provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals. Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. This mission is carried out without regard to race, color, creed, sex or sect, disability, national origin or ability of a patient or family to pay. In 1962 the Shriners of North America allocated $10 million to establish three hospitals that specialized in treatment and rehabilitation of burned children. After visiting numerous university based medical institutions, the decision was made to build the first pediatric burn unit on the campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). What began in 1963 as a seven-bed ward has now become a thirty-bed non-profit pediatric burn hospital, research and teaching center. It is one of the four Shriners Hospitals that specialize exclusively in burn care in addition to numerous other hospitals that care for children with orthopedic disabilities. Shriners cares for children with burn injuries from the time of acute injury through rehabilitation and individual reconstructive needs throughout their childhood. The children at Shriners Hospital are in need of tote bags and lap blankets. We will be cutting, pinning and sewing these items at the Mardi Gras Rally. Please bring scissors, pins, ruler, thread and fabric donations. We also need sewing machines. If you have a pattern, please bring a copy with you. Fabrics need to be durable and easily washed such as fleece and cotton. No skill is needed so please make plans to help with our service project.

6 6 The Nominating Committee is currently in the process of searching for candidates to serve as officers and trustees for the Texas Highland Lakes Unit. The officers of the unit consist of a President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, Treasurer and four Trustees. For Trustees the term of office is two years and a one year term for the reminder of the offices.
