1 Volume 32 - Number 3 Established 1983 March 2014 General Meeting March 12, 2014 The first General Meeting of 2014 will be held on March 12th at the San Diego Automotive Museum. As you know, we begin each meeting at 6:00 pm with a catered dinner from the Barbeque Pit and the cost is a very reasonable $ We will get the latest on OUR 2014 National Tour (coming in July) and you should be there to pick up your latest 2014 Membership Roster. We hope to meet at least two new families to our club, so come expecting a great time. The date of the next event can be obtained by calling any of the club officers or by checking the Upcoming Events listing in this issue. The main publication of the MTFCA is the Vintage Ford, which alone is well worth the national dues of $40 per year. Lifetime memberships are also available. 2 President s Message 2014 is the year of the Model T - at least for the San Diego club. Not only are we hosting a national tour in July, but we have other tours and events planned. This year s out-of-town tour is in Arizona and not only San Diego people, but others will be there. These tours are always a good place to see old freinds. We are coming home on March 12, which is a meeting night. I ll try to get home in time, but if I don t Chuck West will chair. Thanks, Chuck! Janna Laughon will fill in for Cathy on table decorations. Thanks, Janna! More at-home tours are planned along with the speedster run in October which will be in Temecula. Some good news - we have a few former members who have rejoined; including one from the earliest days. Welcome back! Any club is only as good as it s people. Let s everyone participate and we ll have a banner year National Tour Notes The next meeting of the 2014 National tour Committee will be held on Thursday, March 6, 6:00 PM at the Histerical Auto Works Sunshine Report We missed Gary and Susie Murdock at our annual meeting at the 94th Squadron. Glad to hear that Gary is feeling better. Get Well Soon. (Perhaps we ll see them at the March meeting - Ed.) 3 Ruckstell Review March 2014 Minutes of the Board Meeting Held at Coco s Restaurant, February 12, 2014 Attendees: Greg and Cathy Rising, Jerry and Ana Yeadon, John Chapman, Janna Laughon, Chuck West, Tony and Heather Bowker, Norm and Delores Kling Start Time: 7:08 PM Greg opened the meeting President Greg introduced Kirby Pray, a new member. REPORTS - OLD BUSINESS: Banquet We had good comments on how it went and where we held it. Food was fantastic. It was difficult for Tony to check-in participants due to configuration of the room. The stairs were difficult for some members. REPORTS - NEW BUSINESS: Treasurer - Tony reports we have money to conduct club business. Union Bank is our new bank. We were short about $400 on the banquet. The new password for Members Page on the website is Cathy (the wife of our current president). This password will be valid until we change presidents in Member at Large - John reported the Automotive Museum confirmed to the Car Council that our club has donated $300 to the museum to purchase more folding chairs. Tony will send them a check. The City of El Cajon is starting the Wednesday evening car show. It runs April 22 to Oct 29. La Mesa s show will start in June. The Balboa Park Museums are offering a yearly pass for $100 for admittance to all museums. As members of the MTFCSD, we are given a $20 discount on this pass. 4 The San Diego Chapter of the Club was chartered on the evening of March 29th in the community room of a local savings and loan association. If the enthusiasm shown that night is any indication, this chapter is bound for success! Because of this enthusiasm, the San Diego Chapter accepts the challenge which the Harbor Chapter (Torrance, CA - Ed.) made in the March-April issue of The Vintage Ford. Give us a little time and we ll see who s trying to keep up with whom! Plans are already being made for an active touring season with a pot-luck picnic in Balboa Park and an overnight tour in the local mountains, not to mention sponsoring the joint SFV-Harbor Chapter tour to Coronado Island in November. The Model T Ford Club of America is a fresh and progressive organization with many new ideas. This Chapter is planning on giving it all the support it possibly can! Ruckstell Review March 2014 MTFCSD News From The Past Editor s Note: We are all aware that our current club was established in 1983, but we hear from some that there was a previous Model T club in San Diego. One or our newest members, Kirby Pray, showed us a copy of the Vintage Ford, May-June 1966 issue, Vol 1, No. 2 (Yes, that s volume 1 - they re now up to volume 49) that indicates on March 29, 1966, the San Diego Chapter of the MTFCA was formed with Kirby Pray as one of it s first members. Other names that are noted include Walt Rosenthal (National President), Max Treece (still a current member) and John Carroll (a former member now deceased). Of interest is the fact that at that time there were only eight (8) chapters and Korby Pray was listed as the contact person (president) of the San Diego Chapter. The truck is a real media magnet and attention getter. Things Worth Knowing From Rand McNally Road Atlas issue To keep your windshield clear of mist on rainy days, rub a sliced onion over the glass with an up and down motion. This will be found to be an admirable protection against rain obscuring the vision, but it is not as well adapted to falling snow, as snow seems to adhere to the glass if the car is running fast. Be sure to coat the entire surface of the glass with the juice of the onion. A small amount of shellac wiill stop small leaks in radiators. Pure vinigar will clean celluloid windows in the curtains of your car. Watch your spark lever. The driver who leaves the spark lever fully advanced, irrespective of grades, road condition and speeds, imposes unnecessary strain on the engine and does not get the efficiency he would in car performance. It pays to regulate the spark to suit the load and speed of the engine, so that ignition does not take place either too early or too late for smooth running and steady flow of power.
