1 Parker Newcomers DATE: TIME: Fran Cronin Editor THE PARKER NEWCOMERS WEBSITE: Suggestions are welcome. Gail Berger at General Meeting February 13th Social: 11:30 am Lunch: 12:00 noon PLACE: The Pinery Cost: $20 PROGRAM: Judy Winnick returns to portray Marie Scott, millionaire rancher of the Dallas Divide who acquired 100,000 acres of land where many Western movies were filmed. You will remember Judy from her portrayal of Irena Sendler last February. She received a Colorado Distinguished Teacher Award during her teaching career. Her portrayal of Marie Scott is both educational and entertaining. DIRECTIONS: Parker Road south to North Pinery Parkway, turn left (when you see the bubble), then right at the Country Club sign. MENU: Deli Buffet Seasonal Mixed Greens with Assorted Dressings Assorted Deli Meats and Cheeses to include: Smoked Turkey Breast, Black Forest Ham and Pastrami Cheddar, Swiss, American and Pepper jack Lettuce, Tomato, pickles and Onion Condiment Tray with Sandwich Spreads Assorted Rolls and Breads Potato Chips Coffee and Ice Tea Cherry Pie President s Message Gail Berger Greetings from Gail Well here it is February and I am trying to get this done for the newsletter on time, but it s just January first and my mind is just not anchored around February Ground Hog Day, Valentines Day and Presidents Birthdays, so I am focusing this newsletter on Newcomers Club. I spent New Years Eve at the PACE center along with 500 other Parkerites, including about thirty club members. I decided that I wanted to see if there would be anyone that I knew if I just walked through the center on my own. No husband to guide me, no friend at my side. I stood by the Coney Island Hot Dog Stand. (Disappointingly, there was not a barrel of corn on the cob sitting in hot oil ready to be slapped into your hand on a thin piece of paper and then lathered in BUTTER!) To my surprise, no matter where I wandered during the evening I met a friendly face. What a wonderful feeling to feel at home and comfortable in a crowd of 500. I ended my solo journey at the refreshment stand, for a Staten Island Ferry, when Leslie thanked me for all of the PNC members who give their time in volunteering at the PACE Center. This is possible because of the PNC, meeting new friends, extending your interests and becoming part of the community. PNC has become a positive force in Parker. Keep up the good work! We applaud all of you who reach out to our community. Bombs are dropping on London. And President Roosevelt is promising he won t send our boys to fight in foreign wars. But American radio gal Frankie Bard, the first woman to report from the Blitz in London, wants nothing more than to bring the war home. Frankie s radio dispatches crackle across the Atlantic Ocean, imploring listeners to pay attention - as the Nazis bomb London nightly, and Jewish refugees stream across Europe. Frankie is convinced that if she can just get the right story, it will wake Americans to action and they will join the fight. Meanwhile, in Franklin, Massachusetts, a small town on Cape Cod, Iris James hears Frankie s broadcasts and knows that it is only a matter of time before the war arrives on Franklin s shores. In charge of the town s mail, Iris believes that her job is to deliver and keep people s secrets, passing along the news that letters carry. And one secret she keeps are her feelings for Harry Vale, the town mechanic, who inspects the ocean daily, searching in vain for German U-boats he is certain will come. Listening to Frankie as well are Will and Emma Fitch, the town s doctor and his new wife, both trying to escape fragile childhoods and forge a brighter future. Alternating between an America still cocooned in its inability to grasp the danger at hand and a Europe being torn apart by war, The Postmistress gives us two women who find themselves unable to deliver the news, and a third woman desperately waiting for news yet afraid to hear it. Reading Ahead: The March book is Lots of Candles Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen 3

As a brand new member I attended the Christmas Lunch in December and was struck by how enthralled we all were by the excellent Chaparral choral entertainment! Which got me to thinking that there must be some musical people amongst us and I wondered if any of you would be interested in getting together to form a group of singers? I understand that a previous group had a lot of fun in the past. We could meet at my house say once a month perhaps and see what develops? I recently moved to Parker from England and have been a singer all my life. I have taught all ages from 5 to 95! (both individually and in groups) singing mostly light and popular pieces, and know how much fun can be had! Just call or me if you are interested and I will coordinate a get together...all are welcome. michele.summers@hotmail.com Tel: Cell: If you would like to join our group, please call Ginny. 6
