1 PREZ SEZ November 30, 2016 Editors- Chuck & Doris Jean Cabalka OFFICERS President, Chuck Cabalka st V.P, Mike Donahue nd V.P., Tom Herron Secretary, Doris Jean Cabalka Corr. Secy., Lavonne Sandersfeld Treasurer, Donella Watkinson One-yr. Director, Wanda Paine One-yr. Director, Arden Taube Two-yr. Director, June Ryan Two-yr. Director, Sue Storjohann INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Dealers, Birthdays, Anniversaries 2 Glen & Millie Hubbard 2 Pumpkin Nut Bread 2 Cabalka s to SE Arizona 3 Muir s in British Columbia 4-7 Thanksgiving is over and I hope all of you had a very enjoyable holiday, with plenty to eat, friends and family to share the event with and were elated to see the Iowa football team beat Nebraska on Friday. Doris Jean and I enjoyed a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner at our park here in Apache Junction with 70 members and guests in attendance. Three turkeys were roasted and they were nearly completely consumed. Now we are moving to the Christmas season, with all it s joys and headaches. Our Christmas lights are up, the weather has cooled off (highs in the 60's, lows in the 40's) and it s feeling more like the holiday season every day. The big days (Black Friday and Cyber Monday) are behind us and we can now look forward to calmer shopping. Word recently received from Jackson Center indicates that 46 members have paid their International dues through the Iowa Unit. We also have seven Affiliate Members. That is great! If there are any of you who have not paid your dues, get them to Donella Watkinson immediately, so she can get the word to Jackson Center and to Nancy Helle so you are not left out of the new directories. And, to those of you who will be traveling to warmer climates for the winter, please drive safely. We want to see all of you back with us next spring. Chuck LUNCHEONS IN IOWA AND ARIZONA Sixteen Iowa Unit members and two guests gathered at the Hwy. 63 Diner in Waterloo for the November 12 th Unit Luncheon, hosted by Gene and Carolyn Haller. They were, in addition to Gene and Carolyn, Scott and Kathy Allen, Chuck and Nancy Helle, Marilyn Mulbrook, Donella Watkinson and daughter, Deb Blaha, Unit 1 st VP Mike Donahue and friend, Marty, Larry and Marsha Larson, Mark Kvidera, Mike and Linda Rickert, and Don and Sue Storjohann. Good food and good conversations were enjoyed by all. The December Luncheon will be hosted by Marilyn Mulbrook at Ryan s Steakhouse in Cedar Rapids. The date is Saturday, December 10 th and the time to gather is 11:30 AM. The steakhouse address is 230 Collins Road and the GPS co-ordinates are N o and W o. Let Marilyn know if you plan to attend, so the early arrivals won t start eating before you arrive. She can be reached at (home phone), (cell phone) or by at marilyn4947@gmail.com. Let s hope the weather cooperates and she has a large turnout. Your newsletter team would appreciate it if someone would get us an article about the luncheon, including the names of the attendees, along with a picture, or two, for inclusion in the next newsletter. (LUNCHEON Continued on page 2) PAUL DOING BETTER Just a short note to let everyone know that Paul and June Ryan have safely arrived at their mobile home here in Apache Junction. Paul is getting around quite well on his crutches and even does a little walking without them. He still has his little knee cart to use when he needs to, but he is getting better each day. Total recovery may be some time off, but it is great to see how far he has progressed since July. Keep it up, Paul! REMEMBER TO MAKE MAY RESERVATIONS This is just a reminder that it is not too late (or too early) to make your site reservations for the May rally at Roberts Creek East Campground in Marion County, Iowa from May 4-7, Detailed instructions were listed in the October newsletter. Since this rally will coincide with the Pella Tulip Time Festival, it promises to be a fun and colorful rally. Tom and Shirley Herron will have things to do and see, other than just the tulips in Pella, so plan to attend. Once you get a reservation made, please let them know so they can plan accordingly.

2 GLEN & MILLIE HUBBARD Some of the older Iowa Unit members will remember Glen and Millie Hubbard, previous unit members who live in Des Moines. Peggy Maston (another past member) let Donella Watkinson know recently that Glen has Parkinson s and has been in a care facility in Des Moines since August. Millie is in a different section of that facility and she and Glen have lunch together every day. The address for them is 4210 Hickman Road, Room 263, Des Moines, IA They would undoubtedly appreciate a Christmas card. DEALER SPOTLIGHT Bill Thomas Camper Sales, Inc. 101 Thomas R.V. The recipe make three 9"x5" loaves. (LUNCHEON Continued from page 1) Pumpkin Nut Bread 3 ½ cups flour 1 tsp. allspice 4 eggs 2 tsp. soda 1 ½ tsp. salt 1 cup vegetable oil 1 tsp. cinnamon 3 cups sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp, baking powder 2/3 cup water ½ tsp. ground cloves 1 cup chopped pecans 2 cups pumpkin Sift dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Make a well and add remaining ingredients, Mix well and pour into 3 parchment lined or non-stick loaf pans. Bake in 350 degree pre-heated oven for 1 hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the loaf. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before removing and placing on wire rack to complete cooling. 1/2" slice: 198 calories 27 gm carbs 9 gm fat 24 mg cholesterol 1 gm fiber You can sprinkle a cinnamon and sugar mixture on top of each loaf before baking; you can drizzle a thin glaze of powdered sugar and water over the loaf tops while they are still quite warm; or drizzle a thicker powdered sugar and water glaze when the loaves are cool. Sue says she just bakes the bread and it will be half gone before it is cool enough to glaze. Shame on you, Don! This uses up the recipes that were sent to us for inclusion in the monthly newsletters. We would appreciate it if some (or many) of you would send us more for future use. Just send them via to cdjcabalka@juno.com or to our winter address; E. Boise St., #46, Apache Junction, AZ We d love to hear from you. The first Iowa Unit Brunch in Arizona was held on Thursday, November 3 rd at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Mesa, AZ, with ten people in attendance. They were Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka (hosts), Bert and Donajean Sherwin (Nebr. Unit), Herb and Sandy Henderson (KC MO Unit), Dick and Floy Winter (past KC MO Unit) and Pat Moyer (past IA Unit) with daughter, Deb. The next Iowa Brunch in Arizona will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 1 st at the Golden Corral at 1868 N. Power Road in Mesa. Remember, those in Arizona get together at Golden Corral at 10:30 AM on the first Thursday of each month through April. Stop in if you are in the area. You don t have to be an Iowa Unit member; just enjoy Airstreaming! Bert & Donajean Floy Pat & Deb DJ Sandy & Herb Dick 2

3 EXPLORING SOUTHEAST ARIZONA Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka made the 150-mile drive, with their Airstream, from Apache Junction, AZ to Benson, AZ on Thursday, November 17 th to attend the Arizona Unit s November rally. The rally was held at the Butterfield RV Resort, which has a unique attraction for guests. The previous owners enjoyed astronomy and had built their own small observatory with a 16-inch telescope. The current ownership, using two resident amateur astronomers, provides a nightly program, weather permitting. While at the rally, everyone had an opportunity to take in the 90- minute program and got to view numerous heavenly bodies, including Mars and The Pleiades (the Seven Sisters) constellation. Although the temperature was cool, it was still very enjoyable. The hosts had scheduled Friday for a 25-mile drive to Tombstone, the Town Too Tough to Die. The town is now strictly a tourist destination, since the silver mines have pretty well played out. If you recall your western lore, this is the town where the Earps and Doc Holiday participated in the Shootout at the OK Corral. The shootout is recreated several times daily and one can view it, for a fee. Chuck and Doris Jean took the trolley ride around the town and saw numerous historic sites, such as the houses where the Earps and Doc Holiday lived, as well as the first church, the first hotel and the Birdcage Theater. Their lunch was at Big Nose Kate s Saloon. The place had originally been the lobby for the Grand Hotel, but had been re-decorated and is now a bar and restaurant. Saturday s outing was scheduled for Bisbee, AZ, where fortunes have been made from mining copper. Having been there just a few years ago, Chuck and Doris Jean opted to drive to Willcox, AZ, about 35 IOWA UNIT WBCCI miles east from Benson. The principal attraction in Willcox is the Rex Allen Museum. You older unit members will remember Rex Allen as The Arizona Cowboy who starred in several western movies in the 50's and 60's. He was born on a ranch about 45 miles NW of Willcox and always claimed Willcox as his home. The community still celebrates Rex Allen Days on the first weekend in October. His statue is in Railroad Park, across from the Museum. His son, Rex Allen Jr. followed in his fathers footsteps when it came to writing music, including the lovely state song, Arizona, I Love You. Next door to the Rex Allen Museum is the Friends of Marty Robbins Museum. Marty Robbins was a avid race car driver, competing in 35 NASCAR races. However, Marty is best known for his singing career and among his hits were A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation, My Woman, My Woman, My Wife and, probably the most famous, El Paso. Wall of Marty Robins Albums Before heading back to Benson, we drove south of town to visit the Willcox Playa Wildlife Refuge, where about 20,000 sandhill cranes winter. We couldn t find it, so stopped to get directions at a cotton gin that was operating. Not only did we get directions, but we also got a quick tour of the ginning operation, where seeds, stems and other debris are removed from the harvested cotton bolls, before the cotton is packed into 600-lb bales for shipment to be spun and woven into cotton cloth. We did finally find the wildlife refuge, only to discover that just a few cranes had arrived. Later we were told that they normally do not arrive until early January, when Willcox celebrates the cranes appearance with the Wings Over Willcox celebration. Following a continental breakfast on Sunday morning, it was time to hook up and head back to Apache Junction, arriving there about 1:00 PM. It was fun to get the trailer out, go somewhere to see new things and meet fellow Airstreamers. We have already registered to join the Arizona group at Ajo in southwestern AZ in February. Christmas Stories From Reader s Digest The gift list is done, and there s a nip in the air time to get your gaudy on! My daughter and I took the long route through the neighborhood to admire the Christmas decorations. One yard contained a trove of lights, ornaments, elves, carolers, trimmings in short, it was a mess. My daughter summed it up perfectly when she announced, It looks like Christmas threw up. Cecille Hansen, Seattle, Washington You re not home free yet. Much more can go wrong! Securing Christmas lights to the tree can be a production. One year, when we finally stood back and flicked on the light switch, I noticed that a branch obscured our prized angel ornament. I grabbed the pruning shears, mounted a stool, and snipped once, and the lights went out. My husband quietly said, You don t have your glasses on, do you? Lynn Kitchen, Parksville, British Columbia 3

4 One beautiful December evening Huan Cho and his girlfriend Jung Lee were sitting by the side of the ocean. There was a romantic full moon, and Huan Cho said, "Hey baby, let's play Weeweechu." "Oh no, not now. Lets just look at the moon", said Jung Lee. "Oh, c'mon baby, let's you and I play Weeweechu. I love you and it's the perfect time," Huan Cho Begged. "But I had rather just hold your hand and watch the moon." "Please Jung Lee, just once... play Weeweechu with me." Jung Lee looked at Huan Chi and said, "OK, we'll play Weeweechu." Huan Cho grabbed his guitar and they both sang... "Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year." Three Wise Women (as opposed to Three Wise Men) Do you know what would have happened if there had been Three Wise WOMEN instead of Three Wise MEN? The WOMEN would have: - Asked directions, - Arrived on time, - Helped deliver the baby, - Cleaned the stable, - Made a casserole, and - Brought practical gifts (like diapers!) Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. "I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE... I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE... I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE..." His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf." To which the little brother replied, "No, but Gramma is!" MUIR S HEADING THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA We promised to include some (maybe all) of the picture blogs sent by former members, Carolyn and Ian Muir, while they were on the WBCCI caravan to Alaska this past summer. The blogs are wonderful memory joggers for those who have taken that trip and may encourage others to try it themselves. Hi Family and Friends, We have a bit of catching up to do with you! First, there have been so many planned activities and stuff to see when we aren't pulling to a new location (which we've done consistently almost every other day since July 12th), that there has been little time to put our newsletters together. Then, our travels have taken us into areas with poor cell coverage and wifi access. This edition has been ready for nearly a week with no way to get it out. The next one is almost done. We just arrived in Fairbanks and will be here for 5 nights with full hookups and great cell and wifi coverage. We also welcome the green grass and actual trees in the campsites! (You'll soon see why we appreciate this.) We are very ready for a community where we can find just about everything to restock, service our hard-working vehicles, and just sit still, in comfort, for a bit. And one of our goals is to catch you up with all we've been doing before we leave here. Here is the account of our trip through British Columbia, July Since we are with the Airstream caravan starting with this edition, you will see that we like to include Airstreams in our pictures when possible:). l also point out that the campground shown in this one, at Toad River, BC, was one of our favorites so far for the scenery, greenness and wonderful atmosphere (that included horses!). We liked it even though we had no hookups except minimal electricity and were crammed together so tightly that we couldn't deploy our awning to keep the sun off. This place was off the grid. The owner had literally built all the buildings himself out of logs. He generates his own electricity. There being no cell service, he had, at great expense, brought in pretty decent internet--which we could access from the office porch. We hope you enjoy this!. Carolyn and Ian 4 (Blog starts on next page)
