Director, Pat Dellamuth Another wonderful year has been completed for the Iowa Unit. Our President Linda Beu, along with our rally hosts, planned for and did a wonderful job of keeping with our theme of Fun, Fellowship and Adventure. THANKS FROM ALL OF US! This will be my second attempt at being the President of the Iowa Unit; only this time it will be a solo flight. I thank all that have filled my garage with the treasures of the Iowa Unit. LAVONNE S LINES My deepest appreciation to Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka for doing the newsletters. They make a magnificent effort in that awesome responsibility and have won recognition at International for the wonderful Iowa Unit Newsletters. I told them I would undertake the Unit Presidency if they did the newsletters. We have many faithful workers in our unit Nancy and Chuck Helle for the Directory, Marilyn Mulbrook for the History Book, our Treasurer Marcia Woolley, Kathy Allen for Webmaster, all the members hosting our rallies and luncheons and the people attending our Rallies and Luncheons. This unit has personally been a very positive aspect in my life; wonderful friendships and interesting places to visit in Iowa and across the US at International Rallies. I am especially grateful to Donella Watkinson for allowing me to go with her to the rallies in her Airstream. It beats staying in a motel. It has also been a tremendous benefit for my Fifth Grade Iowa History class to be able to share with them the information about the places we go for rallies and to tell them to Travel Iowa. I also appreciate the outpouring of care and concern during Dennis illness and the support by the many members who attended his funeral. Let s work together to keep the FUN, FEL- LOWSHIP AND ADVENTURE going in our IOWA UNIT. No business is conducted but lots of good conversation is guaranteed. UNCLE SAM (OOPS!) REGION 8 NEEDS YOU! As you will notice in the attached Region 8 Newsletter, put out by Betty Sullivan, it has become necessary for Leonard to resign his position as Region 8 President, much as he hates to do so. Problems with his heart have necessitated this move. With the previous resignation of 2 nd Vice President Paul Lloyd (also with health problems), Region 8 is left with just Glenn Waters to fill the top three offices. Consequently, there is a drastic and urgent need for members to step forward to fill these vice president vacancies. Since several months of the officer-year have already passed, the terms of the offices will be somewhat shorter than normal. If you, or any Region 8 WBCCI member, are interested, contact Leonard and Betty Sullivan or Glenn Waters. Your help is needed and greatly appreciated.

2 OFFICERS INSTALLED On Friday evening, following an excellent lasagna supper prepared and served by Paul and June Ryan, Leonard and Betty Sullivan installed those 2014 Iowa Unit Officers that were present. Due to Leonard s health problems, this was one of his last, if not the last, duties as our Region 8 President. Those present and installed were Lavonne Sandersfeld as President, Paul Ryan as 1 st Vice President, Donella Watkinson as Corresponding Secretary, Doris Jean Cabalka as Recording Secretary and Pat Dellamuth as a 2-Year Director. Not present for installation were Marcia Woolley for Treasurer and Kathy Allen as the second 2-Year Director. Leonard introduced Glenn Waters, who as Lavonne being installed by Leonard Region 81 st Vice President, will be moving up to the presidency on November 1 st when Leonard s resignation becomes effective. Lavonne announced several of the committee chairpersons for 2014, as well as the locations for the four Iowa Unit Rallies. It promises to be an interesting year for the Iowa Unit. Make sure you attend all the rallies. Linda Receiving Plaque From Leonard and Betty ROLLING RALLY PLANNING UNDERWAY Work is progressing on the development of a Rolling Rally along the Mississippi River in October of next year. The current plans are to rendezvous at Keokuk and proceed north on the Iowa side of the river, culminating at McGregor. The caravan is anticipated to run about 8 days, (Oct. 4 to 12) with overnights at Keokuk, Clinton, Dubuque and McGregor. There is more to see along the way than time will allow, but your caravan/rally hosts (Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka) will be trying to pick out the most interesting points. Keep this in mind when setting up your 2014 vacation (if you are still working) and regardless of whether you are working or are retired, plan to join your Airstream friends on a fun-filled trip up the Mississippi. Hopefully, the leaves will be in full and glorious color. More will be forthcoming in future newsletters. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then you body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends., DIRECTORY CHANGES AND DUES ARE DUE The time is rapidly approaching for the preparation of the 2014 International and Iowa Unit Directories. If there are any changes you desire to make, PLEASE get them to both Nancy Helle and Doris Jean Cabalka. Nancy will need them to prepare the Iowa Unit Directory and Doris Jean will want them to make changes in the listing so newsletters can be sent. Any changes can be made in writing and mailed or, better yet, they can be sent by . Nancy s address is nhelle@aol.com and Doris Jean s is cdjcabalka@juno.com. Many of you have dropped your landline and are solely cell phone and you may not have remembered to let the rest of us know. This is also another reminder that 2014 dues are payable. International dues are still $65.00, while Iowa Unit dues are $15.00, making a total of $ Affiliates and friends are also $ Send your checks to Marcia Woolley at her Independence address; 1997 Three Elms Park Rd, Independence, IA If your dues are not received before November 30 th, your name will not appear in the national directory. NEW IOWA UNIT OFFICERS Pat Dellamuth, 2-yr. Director, Donella Watkinson, Corr. Secy., Doris Jean Cabalka, Rec. Secy., Paul Ryan, 1st VP, Lavonne Sandersfeld, President, Betty Sullivan, Past Region 8 President & Leonard Sullivan, Region 8 President FOR SALE Thanks to John and Carol Heckman, your newsletter team has received word of a 1977, 24 ft. Argosy motorhome that is for sale near Manchester, IA. The unit is on a Chevy chassis and the owner, Steve Ross, is asking $4,000 or best offer. The unit has just 24,914 miles on it and needs a loving home. If interested, call Steve at BEEN SOME PLACE? DONE SOMETHING INTERESTING? We are now entering the part of the year when rallies are over, vacations are done for many and it is time for a great many Iowa Unit members to hunker down to survive the upcoming winter. Yet, most, if not all, of you will continue doing things and going places and the rest of us would like to know about it. Your newsletter team would beg you to get the information to them for inclusion in upcoming newsletters. Articles you send by either U.S mail, (cdjcabalka@juno.com) or telephone ( ) would be appreciated and if you also have a picture, or two, that would certainly add to the item. Articles DO NOT need to be lengthy a paragraph or two would suffice. As you can see from the Camping World article on the next page, member-supplied articles are really interesting. So, please help us. Thanks. 2

The company Chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis hosted the event and it was spectacular!! A delicious buffet meal was offered to all in attendance and this was followed by a full two hours of awarding door prizes. And, the door prizes were awesome! When a person s name was called, Mr. Lemonis invited him/her to come forward and he asked them what they wanted that Camping World could give them. All couples that had been married for 50 years, or more, were given gift certificates. He also handed out gift certificates for $250, $500, $1,000, Honda generators, new awnings, foldable bikes, chairs, rugs, an inverter, camper covers, a trip to Cancun, a trip to Hawaii, and a trip to Italy. A couple that was in the process of dealing on a new camper received $5,000 off the listed price; there seemed to be no end to the prizes. We were amazed at his generosity. Mr. Lemonis reminded everyone of the importance of being volunteers in their communities and that Camping World requires volunteerism from their employees. He also informed everyone that the Good Sam Club name is based on the Bible narrative of the Good Samaritan. Camping World plans to open two more stores in Iowa; one in Davenport and another in West Des Moines. We highly recommend making it a priority to attend either, or both, of these openings. Camping clubs that were at the opening were each awarded gift certificates for $1,000 in merchandise. And, a good time was had by all in attendance! Editors Note: The following additional information was received by telephone from Gene and Carolyn Haller #22146 Iowa Unit Members. 3 Camping World in northeast Iowa became official when they held their open house on October 16 th at the previous Ace Fogdall RV facilities at 7805 Ace Place in SW Cedar Falls. According to Gene and Carolyn Haller (who were among several Iowa Unit members in attendance) more than 1,200 people turned out, with 700 registered for the drawings. The President of Camping World was there and he presided over the numerous drawings for prizes and gift certificates. Each camping club present and registered received a $1,000 certificate good for anything in the store, so the Iowa Unit should be receiving their certificate sometime in the near future. Since the unit has been trying to reduce the amount of stuff that is either hauled from rally to rally or stored at some member s home, the certificate will be something the unit will have to deal with. Gene said that there had to have been more than $100,000 in merchandise given away at the open house. One example was when the group was asked who had been married the shortest time. That couple was awarded a trip to Italy. Another was when the Mr. Lemonis called forward all couples who had been married for more than 50 years. The couple married the longest (64 or 67 years) received a $500 certificate, while all the others got $250 certificates. Each child present was given a shopping basket, was told to go shopping in the store and to keep everything they put in the basket. Another couple from Waverly received a $5,000 certificate toward a new RV. Gene knows one of the employees who works at the facility and was told by that person that he alone carried out 12 generators and more were given away, along with several washer-dry combos and numerous satellite systems. Unfortunately, Gene and Carolyn s name was not among those drawn.

4 WHAT A LOVELY WEEKEND FOR A RALLY The Villages of Van Buren County certainly lived up to their billing as the Iowa Unit gathered at the Heartland Christian Camp in Birmingham for the October Fall Festival Rally. Paul and June Ryan were hosts for the rally and they did a wonderful job. Units began arriving on Wednesday with beautiful, sunny and mild weather. Additional units arrived on Thursday and Friday. Attendees included Norm & Linda Beu. Chuck & Doris Jean Cabalka, Ivan & Jo Curtis, Larry & Pat Dellamuth, John & Carol Heckman Richard & Martha Jirus, Dave & Candy Jones, Chuck & Nancy Helle, Mike & Dana Johnson, Ian & Carolyn Muir, Marilyn Mulbrook, Lavonne Sandersfeld, Leonard & Betty Sullivan, Donella Watkinson and Glenn Waters. The early arrivals were able to go to the Dutchman Store in Cantril on Friday to From l. around circle: Curtis, Johnson s, Nancy, Doris beat the expected mobs on Saturday. (The store is not open on Sunday). This store Jean, Glenn, Chuck H, Marilyn, Donella, & Lavonne not only has the usual array of groceries and other necessities, but also has bulk foods and locally grown produce and has expanded to stock clothing and miles and miles of yard goods. However, well before the rally began, on Thursday afternoon, Leonard Sullivan gave everyone a big scare when he suddenly started feeling short of breath. Leonard was rushed to the hospital in Fairfield, about 10 miles north. There it was discovered that he had fluid in his lungs and it was not pneumonia, but caused by his heart. After numerous tests, he was given some drugs and allowed to return to the rally by early evening. Everyone was very glad to see him back and hope he does not experience this problem again. He was still quite weak, but, at least, he came back! He even recovered enough that he was able to install our unit officers on Friday evening. Glenn, June, Chuck H, Marilyn, Donella, & Lavonne. Rain was forecast for Friday night and Saturday morning, but it never materialized. We awoke on Saturday morning to clouds to the east which rapidly continued further east and we were blessed with a beautiful blue sky day which continued throughout the rally. Following a tasty and filling breakfast of egg-cheese-potatoes-sausage casserole on Saturday morning, it was time for everyone to take off to visit the Villages of Van Buren County to see what sights there were and to find those bargains. For a 48hour period, Van Buren County must have been the center of all garage sales. Everywhere one looked, there was another garage sale sign. A few, among the many, many places to visit, was an antique tractor show in Milton, an equestrian drill team demonstration in Farmington, a parade in Keosauqua, a quilt show in Bonaporte and a buckskinner rendevous in Lacy-Keosauqua State Park. And, the food! Oh, my! It seemed as if everywhere you looked there was a food stand where one could get anything from a sandwich to a full meal (with dessert, too). Rally attendees spent Saturday and Sunday (after attending church services in Birmingham) exploring the ten communities and one state park that made up Van Buren s Scenic Drive Festival. Congratulations and our biggest THANK YOU goes to Paul and June Ryan for all the work they did in hosting the rally. The grounds were good, the facilities were more than adequate and the food was great! And, to top it off they provided fantastic weather. What a fabulous end for our 2013 Rally Year! 5 WHERE DID THAT STRANGE IDEA COME FROM?? There are probably a goodly number of Iowa Unit members who wonder how combining oatmeal and ice cream ever came to pass. When that combination is mentioned to those who never had it, the first reaction seems to be Yuck. However, when you stop to think about it, the ice cream provides not only the sugar but also a very rich milk product. Some even add brown sugar and/or raisins for more kick. As far back as anyone can remember (and Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka go back to 1967), the first time it was served at an Iowa Unit breakfast was at the October 12, 1991 unit rally at the fairgrounds in Marengo, IA. It seems that Jack and Walda Gufstason (unit members who were hosting the rally) had been camping a few weeks earlier in their Airstream motorhome. Walda prepared oatmeal for their Sunday breakfast and when Jack went to the refrigerator to get the milk, he discovered they were out. His first thought was that they would have to pack up the motorhome to drive to the nearest grocery store to get milk. Walda said that they had ice cream in the freezer, so they tried it. Lo and behold, it tasted great! When it came to the Iowa Unit rally a few weeks later, they simply noted the breakfast on the schedule as a Mystery Breakfast just bring your own bowls. They then sprung the combination on the group and, to everyone s surprise, it was wonderful. For many years thereafter, it became a staple for at least one unit rally a year. After having been prepared and served at a Region 8 rally when Iowa was assigned a breakfast, Region 8 President Charlie Kennedy liked it so much that for the next three or four years, Iowa did not have a choice of what to prepare for their turn at breakfast it was assigned oatmeal and ice cream - period. The ice cream can be any flavor that strikes your fancy. Chuck and Doris Jean have found that butter pecan is so popular that that is all they serve when they annually prepare the oatmeal and ice cream breakfast in their park in Arizona. AUTUMN IS A BEAUTIFUL SEASON Ever wonder what makes the leaves turn pretty in the fall and why trees turn different colors? No, it is not fairies with paint brushes! Every leaf-bearing tree (not including evergreens) has the ability to turn some sort of color in the fall because all of them have the various colors already in their leaves. During the spring and summer months, the trees are growing and a process called photosynthesis turns sunlight, water and minerals into chlorophyll. This chlorophyll provides the food for the tree and is so dominant that it masks all the rest of the colors and the leaves are all green. As the sun drops lower in the sky, the days get shorter, the temperatures get cooler and photosynthesis ceases, chlorophyll production ends and no more green is produced, thus allowing the other colors to appear. Different species of trees have differing amounts of the other colors, accounting for the reds, yellows, oranges and maroons we all love to see. So, it is no wonder Joyce Kilmer penned those famous words, I think that I shall never see, a poem as lovely as a tree... IT S NOT TOO EARLY TO MAKE PLANS Now is the time for all good WBCCI members to come to the aid of their club. Pre-registration for the 2014 International Rally in Gillette, WY is at an all-time low and our club is facing a crisis. Perhaps you were in Gillette in 2010 and don t plan to go back next year been there, done that. Or, perhaps you feel the drive is too long, but you don t mind driving miles just to do some shopping. Or, perhaps you feel the fuel cost is too much, but you will pay $5 for a pack of cigarettes. This is not to be critical of any of these practices or thoughts, but simply to point out that we all do things that satisfy our desires but may be reluctant to do the little extra to support our club. Maybe the time for International Rallies is coming to an end, but we don t need to be among those who help speed it s demise. Pre-register and plan to attend the 2014 rally. You will certainly help your club and, who knows, you might even have fun and enjoy it. Comments by Chuck Cabalka A motorist passing an orchard was intrigued to see a farmer there with a herd of pigs around him. The farmer was feeding a pig by holding it up to a tree, so that it could bite off an apple. Then, he would put the pig down and raise another one. The motorist stopped and shouted to the farmer, Why don t you just shake the tree and let the apples fall on the ground? Why should I? asked the farmer. A blonde has sharp pains in her side. The doctor examines her and says, You have acute appendicitis. The blonde says, That s sweet, doc, but I came here to get medical help. Well, it would save a lot of time for a start. replied the motorist. Yes, the farmer said, but what does a pig care about saving time? 5

6 Iowa Unit Meetings at Heartland Christian Campground, Birmingham, Iowa; October 11, 2013 The Executive Board Meeting was called to order by President Linda Beu at 4:05 pm. Officer roll call was answered by President Linda Beu; 1 st VP Lavonne Sandersfeld; 2 nd VP Paul Ryan; Corresponding Secretary Norm Beu; Directors Marilyn Mulbrook and Chuck Helle and Immediate Past President Pat Dellamuth. Recording Secretary Kathy Allen; Treasurer Marcia Wooley; and Directors Chuck Kiple and Sue Storjohann were absent. Minutes for the Adel Rally were approved as corrected. Reports of Officers: A motion for payment of bills associated with the Birmingham Rally and with the Installation of Officers ceremony and reception was made by Chuck Helle and seconded by Pat Dellamuth. The motion passed. First VP Sandersfeld firmed up several Committee Chairmen for President Beu confirmed to the Board that Unit bulletin boards were no longer used or required at International and Region 8 Rallies. This introduced discussion which led to review of Iowa Unit property which essentially moves from one garage to the next as new unit presidents are installed. There was general agreement that property not required should be eliminated. Following the meeting, the Board reviewed the property and made decisions regarding retention of selected property items. First VP Sandersfeld explained that the August, 2014 rally is scheduled for Prairie Flower North Campground at Saylorville Lake. To reserve one loop of 14 sites, a deposit of $ is required. Second VP Ryan moved to pay the deposit. Lavonne seconded the motion, which passed. Hearing no objection, President Beu adjourned the meeting at 4:54 pm. The Iowa Unit Business Meeting was called to order by President Linda Beu at 7 pm. Corresponding Secretary Beu provided an informal report of the Executive Board Meeting. The purpose of the Business Meeting was to install unit officers for the club year. The Installing Officer was Leonard Sullivan, WBCCI Region 8 President. As her final duty, President Beu presented the traditional Big Wheel to incoming President Sandersfeld. Respectfully submitted, Norm Beu, Corresponding Secretary FROM Pat & Dave Shaw, Wed., Oct 9 North Iowa Unit held their Installation Rally in Albert Lea, MN. On Saturday, October 5th following the installation of new officers, our "retiring" president Rosalie Macumber had difficulty standing. She was taken to the local hospital by ambulance and sent to Rochester, MN by air ambulance. They have run a series of tests, and it is our understanding that she had bleeding on the brain. She is still in Rochester as of this writing. Ted Holmen has been visiting her and sending us reports on her condition. Here is the latest; we will keep you informed of any updates. "Just got back from visiting the Macumbers. Rosalie can do some moving of her left leg and arm. Has no vision in left eye. Has had several MRI s to see if any change in the bleed. Was moved from ICU to the rehab section of the hospital. Will be a couple of days to access what she can do. Possibility of getting therapy near home." Address is: Rosalie Macumber, St Mary's Hospital #2-250, nd St SW, Rochester, MN Ted Holmen FROM Pat & Dave Shaw, Sun., Oct. 13 We have received two updates concerning Rosalie's condition. First one is from members Ann & Fred Marcalus: "Ann & I just got off the phone after talking to Rosalie & Jim Macumber. As we understand it Rosalie is still in St. Mary's in Rochester receiving therapy. She is making progress toward returning function to her left arm and leg. They have been discussing options with family about continuing her rehab closer to home. The good news of course is that she is making progress and she is expected to make a full recovery in time." Second info is from Ted Holmen: "Just got back from St Mary s seeing Rosalie and Jim. She has had a lot of improvement. From no movement of right arm and hand, now has a fairly good grip and the strength to push. Also control of left leg is coming back. Today her food was changed from all pureed to more solid foods. Also can have all water she wants. When we departed she was being moved to the bathroom by aides, that end of the business has picked up and working. In her talking, she was more up beat and positive. She is getting therapy twice a day. She will be here at St. Mary s another week or more. Will be looking at getting her therapy closer to home." FOR ONCE I GOT A GOOD ONE By Carolyn Muir I call this Going Home. It was taken in early August at Kohler-Andrea State Park near Sheboygan, WI. We were camped here on the way home after 4 nights In Door County and just days before the Birmingham rally. 6
