The weather still played a major role, but as the Cabalka's stated in our last newsletter: wind, rain, cold, but we had FUN! The Joint Rally was excellent, thanks to the planning, organization, and work by our hosts, Jeff and Wanda Paine. Their original goal was 25 units, but we had 34! Cooperation and the sharing of responsibilities by the Units could not have been better. Thanks to North Iowa, chaired by John and Carol Heckman for the supper on Thursday evening and the Sunday morning service, the Minnesota Unit chaired by Steve and Susie Jedlund for the Saturday morning breakfast and the Saturday tour to Charles City and to our Iowa Unit members for the Oatmeal and Ice Cream Breakfast and Sunday morning breakfast. Thanks to all who set up and took down the THREE tents. Thanks to all who attended and helped with the activities. We appreciated the supper provided for us by Shorewood RV and for bringing down Airstreams to show us. I always dreamed of having a rally in this area, especially touring the Surf Ballroom, the Music Man Square and the puppets COME TO AUGUST STATE FAIR RALLY Join us for the State Fair Rally August 14-17th at Saylorville Lake just North of Des Moines. The Goldenrod Circle with 14 sites has been reserved at the Prairie Flower North Campground. There is space for 14, so be the first to reserve your space by calling me at or at ljdell@gmail.com. Normally during the Iowa State Fair there is no camping available for drop ins. We will visit Reiman Gardens in Ames, eat at the famous Hickory Park BBQ Restaurant in Ames, visit downtown Ames to their famous shops, their Farmers Market and visit the High Trestle Trail Bridge near Madrid. LAVONNE S LINES from the Sound of Music seen in the Art Museum. My dreams were realized! Our next Iowa Unit Rally in August will be at Saylorville Lake near Des Moines at State Fair time. This will give you an opportunity to attend the State Fair but there are so many different things to see and do in the Des Moines area. We will also spend some time in Ames. Pat has reserved fourteen sites and please let her know as soon as possible since the State Fair time is a busy time for this campground. One morning last week Pat and Larry Dellamuth invited me over for breakfast to sample a new breakfast dish and you will be in for a treat! One of the perks of being President! Mike and Dana Johnson will be hosting the September Rally in Long Grove at the Scott County Park and that will also be a great time. Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka are completing plans for the Caravan along the Mississippi River in October. Put that on your calendar and let them know as soon as possible if you to plan to attend. The International Rally is coming up soon in June and we have a number of our Iowa members leaving at different times for Gillette, WY for early worker jobs. There is still time to register and if you decide at the last minute to attend the rally, just come and register when you arrive. See you down the ROAD! Lavonne For those who like to go to the State Fair, here's your chance! A short drive gets you there! Friday will be State Fair Day with our own Blue Ribbon Judging that night. For those who don't like the Fair you might want to tour Des Moines and visit the Botanical Gardens, State Capital, Iowa Holocaust Memorial, State Historical Museum, Pappajohn Sculpture park, Salisbury House or other possibilities that we will have information about. JUST RESERVE YOUR CAMP SPOT WHILE THEY ARE AVAILABLE BY CONTACTING US. Thanks, Pat and Larry Dellamuth or ljdell@gmail.com

Kathy Links JOIN A CARAVAN TO GILLETTE At the membership meeting at the Clear Lake rally, two early worker caravans to the International Rally in Gillette were approved. One, to be led by Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka will be scheduled to arrive at Gillette on June 12 th, while a second caravan led by Chuck and Nancy Helle is scheduled to arrive on June 19 th. If you are interested in joining either of these caravans, get in touch with either leader immediately to indicate your desire to join them. Chuck and Doris Jean currently plan to leave about June 8 th or 9 th. Routes and departure dates will be established once it is known who will be joining either caravan. Even if you do not join either caravan, try to get to Gillette, anyway. The International Rally promises to be a good one and you ll be sorry if you miss it. These are pictures of the Cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin, Washington, DC in April by Pat & Larry Dellamuth. MAKE YOUR OCTOBER TRAVEL PLANS NOW We have very important news for those planning to attend the October unit rally, whether you plan to travel with the caravan along the Mississippi River or just bring your rig to the final stop to attend dinner, the business meeting and installation of the 2015 unit officers on Saturday evening, the 11 th. Even if you have already indicated that you plan to be part of the caravan or just attend the final stop at Prairie de Chien, please let Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka know, as they have just started assembling the list. Rendevous for the caravan will be at Hickory Haven RV Park, about 3 miles north of Keokuk, IA, just west off Hwy. 218, on Saturday, October 4 th. Driving details to the park will be provided those joining the caravan. The caravan will spend Saturday and Sunday, the 4 th and 5 th at Keokuk, before moving north on Monday, the 6 th. The owner of Hickory Haven prefers not to have individuals call in to make reservations, but wants Chuck and Doris Jean, as caravan leaders, to assemble a list of names and numbers of those intending to camp at the RV park and let him know the total. He would like this information no later than August 20 th, so make your plans accordingly. Chuck and Doris Jean would like the information as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the last minute. Camping costs are $23.00 per night plus 5.5% tax for 30 amps and $24.00 per might plus tax for 50 2 amps. Depending upon the number of other campers in the park at that time, it may be necessary for our units to park backto-back in the long spaces, but that should not be a problem. A buffet dinner is scheduled for Saturday evening at nearby Ogo s Restaurant and Buffet at a per-person cost of $9.50 plus tax ($8.75 plus tax for seniors). At this dinner, printed information and driving instructions will be handed out to caravan attendees. Present plans are to spend Sunday at the Mormon Village and Visitor Center in Nauvoo, IL, with those arriving during the forenoon on Saturday being provided info on a number of places of interest in Keokuk. The second overnight stop, on October 6 th and 7 th, is planned for Clinton County s Rock Creek & Marina Campground, about 3 miles south of Camanche and 8 miles south of Clinton, IA. This leg of the trip will bypass Davenport, since the preceding month s rally (September) will be in Davenport, hosted by Mike and Dana Johnson. Overnight camping costs are $20.00 for reserved electric and $17.00 for walk-in electric. The third leg, on the 8 th and 9 th, is planned for overnights at Miller Riverview Campground in Dubuque. Although the Iowa Unit has camped at this location a couple of times in the past, this time it is planned to serve as the base for a Day-in-Historic- (Continued on page 3)

A dinner at either Breitbach s Restaurant in Balltown or at the Mystic Island Casino next door to the campground are possibilities yet to be finalized. At the time of this newsletter preparation, the campground is closed due to flooding by the Mississippi River. Hopefully, all flooding will be over by October. Reservations can also be made at this campground, but not until the flooding has receded. Nightly rates are $15.00 with electricity, once the campground re-opens. Due to the spaces available at these two campgrounds (84 at Camanche and 100 at Dubuque), your leaders do not anticipate problems with mid-week camping availability. Reservations can be made at these two campgrounds by calling for Camanche and for Dubuque. The final caravan stop, Friday to Sunday (October 10-12) will be at Sports Unlimited Campground in Prairie du Chien, WI. You cannot imagine how difficult it is to secure 20 camping sites on the prime weekend for leaf viewing in NE Iowa and western Wisconsin. Consequently, we were lucky to find a campground, even though it is a little pricier than we had hoped for. Each campsite will have full hookups and parking will be on level sites under shade trees. The campground was good enough to hold 20 spaces for us for a while, but it is imperative that, if you plan to attend, you get your reservations made AS SOON AS POSSI- BLE!!! They will release any unreserved sites for leaf peepers later in the summer. The campground discounted their normal charge of $38.00 ($40.09 per night, including taxes) to $32.00 ($33.76, tax included). This $6.33 discount helps. For those planning to stay Sunday evening, the cost would be $31.65 for that night. The campground can be reached by phoning and, when doing so, indicate you are part of the Iowa Airstream Club. After you have made reservations, please let Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka know, by phone ( ) or at cdjcabalka@juno.com, so they can add you to the attendee list. Pikes Peak State Park near McGregor, IA was checked, but, as one of the early Iowa State Parks (1935), the hilly spaces are quite short and are very sloping. Four other commercial parks were also checked, but were either too small, accepted seasonals only or were already filled for that weekend. Chuck and Doris Jean have already registered at Sports Unlimited. A room has been reserved at Huckleberry s Family Restaurant for the Saturday evening dinner, business meeting and officer installation. More about that later. 3

4 HAVE YOU SEEN INTERESTING PLACES? We are now entering the time of year when the Airstreams have been taken out of winter storage and the wheels are ready to roll. That means that Iowa Unit members will be traveling to many various places around the state and nation. It also means that there are a lot of interesting articles and pictures that can be shared with fellow Iowa Unit members. So, as you travel to these locations, please write up an article (it doesn t need to be long) and send it to your newsletter team. Any pictures that you would want to send would also be appreciated. Your team will do all they can to get these articles and pictures in the next newsletter. After all, you may be visiting a place/places that some of the rest of us would like to visit. Our address is cdjcabalka@juno.com and our mailing address is in the Iowa Unit Directory. FROM 25 YEARS AGO Since your newsletter team has access to the old Recording Secretary books, it was thought It might be interesting to include excerpts from business meetings of the Iowa Unit from 25 years ago. This is the first one and if you like it, or dislike it, let us know. The May 12-14, 1989 rally was held at Fiscus Grove near Liscomb, IA with 43 trailers, 8 walk-ins and 3 visitors present. President Jack Bruin presided, with 1 st VP Wayne Sutherland, 2 nd VP Gene Teggatz, Corres. Sec. Dorie Bruin, Rec. Sec. Barb McMullen, Treas. Helen Sutherland and Directors Lorraine Axtell, Carl Hunter and Pete Koskamp, along with Past Pres. Don Pearce, present. Helen Sutherland reported on the upcoming Iowa Breakfast in Bozeman, MT. The Treasurer reported a balance of $3, New members Robert and Alpharetta Koch from Des Moines were installed. The Iowa Unit had an International Teen Queen Contest entry (Erika Wilkins), but no parade entry. Maury Rich reported there were 3,450 units pre-registered for the Bozeman International Rally. FIRST EVER THREE IN ONE RALLY COLD! WET! WINDY! That describes weather conditions as three WBCCI units gathered at Clear Lake State Park in north central Iowa on the weekend of May Thirty-four Iowa (11), North Iowa (8) and Minnesota (15) Airstreams met in a triunit rally hosted by Jeff and Wanda Paine of the Iowa Unit. Although the rally began with rather inhospitable weather, it gradually improved and the weekend ended with sunny, but cool, conditions. True to Airstreaming traditions, however, the 65 people attending did not let such a little thing as weather affect the Fun and Fellowship. Activities began on Thursday afternoon, as rally attendees made the 20-mile drive to Forest City, IA to tour the Winnebago motorhome manufacturing plant. It was interesting to learn that the Winnebago and Itasca motorhomes are nearly identical; just the emblems and prices differentiating one from the other. The Winnebago name originated from the name of the nearby river, the county and the Indian tribe that had originally resided in the area. The North Iowa Unit prepared and served the Thursday evening meal of sloppy joe sandwiches with all the trimmings IOWA UNIT WBCCI YOUR UNIT NEEDS YOU! It is now time for the Iowa Unit Nominating Committee to start securing members to serve as unit officers for the 2015 year. The committee consists of Chairperson Linda Beu and members Pat Dellamuth and Chuck Cabalka. If any of you feel a responsibility to the unit and would agree to serve in one of the officer capacities, let any of the three know. As our current First Vice President, Paul Ryan will undoubtedly be the committee nominee for President, although any unit member can be nominated.. Kathy Allen and Pat Dellamuth will each have one more year to serve as Directors. The offices of First and Second Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer will also need nominees. Two 2-year Director positions will need to be filled with nominations from the membership at our August rally. Please give this matter serious thought and help the committee out by volunteering for one of the offices. Talk to the current officer that you would consider replacing and see how much (or little) work is involved. Your unit needs your help and the committee will thank you. LUNCHEON PLANS FOR GILLETTE Paul Ryan has made arrangements for an Iowa Unit Luncheon at Gillette. It will be at the Mufa Cafe, 500 Or Drive, Gillette at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 29. This will be a buffet luncheon, dutch treat, at a cost of $10.95 plus tax and gratuity. The cafe does not have a separate room but will try to get our group seated together. Their normal group of customers is finished by this time. Paul does not recommend arriving ahead of time. 4 Note the coats at hearty breakfast of oatmeal & ice cream and muffins. (including dessert). The Iowa Unit had Friday morning responsibilities and served everyone an oatmeal and ice cream, muffins and fruit breakfast. Then, the touring began. Lavonne watching Chuck Helle as he asks Is that enough oatmeal? Friday s first stop was the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. This nationally reknown ballroom, with a 3,600 sq. ft. dance floor, has hosted hundreds of musicians and bands since 1933, ranging from the Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington bands to country stars Martina McBride, Roy Clark and Clint Black. It was at the Surf Ballroom that rock and roll stars (Continued on page 5)

5 (Continued from page 4) Clear Lake Rally Above Panorama of the Surf Ballroom dance floor Below Group gathered on the ballroom stage Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. The Big Bopper Richardson last performed on February 2, 1959 before dying in an airplane crash about 1:00 AM the following morning when flying to their next gig in Moorehead, MN. Since 1979, an annual tribute is held in their honor at the Surf on the first weekend in February and concerts, dances and galas are still held at the ballroom. The second Friday stop was at the MacNider Art Museum in nearby Mason City, where a 45-minute walking tour began that took attendees past several homes designed by world-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright or individuals who had studied under Mr. Wright. The Wright-developed Prairie School style of homes have a distinctive appearance and are easily distinguishable from their neighbors. Collectively, the homes make an interesting historic district. After lunch, a visit to Music Man Square completed the day s touring. These facilities, Frank Lloyd Wright home also in Mason City, pay tribute to songwriter Meredith Wilson and his origination of the stage play and movie The Music Man. A street scene duplicates the 1912 street scene from the movie, complete with an operating ice cream parlor, which really scored with the Airstreamers. Numerous exhibits show memorabilia from Mr. Wilson as well as clips from some of the many movies for which he wrote the musical score. Also included in the admission price was a tour of Mr. Wilson s boyhood home sitting right next door to the museum. This was a great way to end a busy day of touring. Friday evening s meal consisted of a humongous potluck, with everyone contributing. Dinner responsibilities were divided up with the Minnesota Unit providing salads, veggies and fruit, the North Iowa Unit providing desserts, bread and buns and the Iowa Unit providing main dishes, meats and casseroles. With four tables heavily loaded with food, no one went away hungry. The Saturday breakfast was pancakes, sausage and fruit prepared and served by the Minnesota Unit. Although the morning was sunny, it was a little cool (40 degrees) and the hot food and coffee really hit the spot. The rest of the day was free time, with a provided list suggesting places to go and things to see in the area. The plant sale in Clear Lake was a hit, as were the citywide garage sales, a horse show and the historical museum in nearby Charles City. Shorewood RV Sales (an Airstream dealer in Minnesota and Iowa) brought several new units to the rally and provided the hamburgerbratwurst meal on Saturday evening, for which they deserve a big THANK YOU. A pastry and coffee breakfast was served by Three tents lined up with sides down and one end open provided seating space and windbreak for everyone. Airstreamers gathered around to enjoy supper prepared and served by Shorewood RV Sales. Marcia Woolley conducting raffle drawing with proceeds going to Common Sense. the Iowa Unit on Sunday morning, preceding a worship service conducted by the North Iowa Unit. Then, it was time to hook em up and move em out as the thirty four Airstreams headed for home and other places. Everyone agreed that they had had an enjoyable weekend and it was fun to visit with neighboring unit members. New friendships were developed, old ones renewed and fun was had by all. After all, that is what WBCCI is all about, isn t it?. 5

6 First of all I would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to all of the units for all of the work that you did on the rally. This being my first region rally I do not mind admitting that I was somewhat nervous about it and if everything would work out and what did I forget to do. Looking around Tuesday afternoon and seeing all of the units doing what was assigned it dawned on me that this was, after all Region 8 and I did not worry about a thing after that. I am not going to list all of the people and what they did because I know that I would forget someone and I do not want to do that - just know how much I appreciate all that was done by all units. I did find out on Monday what I forgot to bring - the coffee but I got that at the store. A few things that I want to mention- Thanks to all of the cooks -I never thought I would see that many COOKIES. They were great. Our International 1st Vice President Joe Perryman was with us and installed our vice presidents. Gary Rush was installed as 1st VP. Even though he was not official until this rally, I would like to thank Gary and Linda for the work they did to help me on the rally. I hope that all of you noticed that I used the plural of vice presidents. I am very glad to announce the we have a 2nd vice president. From the Kansas City unit Beth McCall is our new 2nd vice president. I think that we as a region have set a record - from the time that Beth agreed to become our second vp - to the board voting yes - to the installation was around one hour. Welcome aboard Gary and Beth. I would also like to thank those that did the workshops. A note from Mary Ann Braden: A big "Thank You" to all of you who participated in the categories of community service. One item that I did not mention Saturday night was that Rosalie and Jim Macumber delivered 30 cabbage patch dolls to an agency for children in Greenfield, Iowa. A retired teacher in Manilla, Iowa refurbishes the dolls and Rosalie and Jim find a place for then. What a great job they have done over the years. Thank you to those who are helping to deliver Region 8 Community Service projects to the International. I hope you will start soon on the collection of hats, tabs, stuffed animals, making $$ for common cents and blankets. Thank you so much. Mary Ann Braden, #2812 IOWA UNIT WBCCI MESSAGE FROM REGION 8 PRESIDENT, GLENN WATERS The results were: Hats 1 GSL 2 Nebraska 3 KC Tabs 1 MGO 2 KC 3 GSL Blankets 1 GSL 2 KC 3 MGO Stuffed animals 1GSL 2 KC 3 Tie MGO and N Iowa Common cents 1 MGO 2 KC 3 Iowa Also from Mary Ann. JOKER We had a wonderful joker tournament. 24 people participated. When they lost they played the losers and had a good time. When the winners group finished we had 15 minutes of designated time left. The winners are 1st place Joe Bublis and Jo Ann Kolley from GSL and 2nd Betty Sullivan (KC) and Berta Atkins, Mary Ann's daughter. I never thought that I would write a cook book but several wanted Sharon's Sausage-Apple Pancakes recipe Ingredients 1 pound bulk pork sausage 2 med. apples peeled and thinly sliced 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons butter 6 eggs 1 1/2 cups 2% milk 1 cup all purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup (4 ounces) extra sharp shredded cheddar cheese maple syrup optional Directions 1. Cook sausage over med. heat until no longer pink; drain and set aside. Cook apples and brown sugar until apples are tender. Place in bottom of 9 x 13 pan. 2. In a blender combine the eggs, milk, flour, sugar and salt. Process until smooth. Pour over apple mixture. Sprinkle with sausage and cheese 3. Bake uncovered at 425 degrees for minutes or until pancake is puffy and golden brown. Serve with syrup if desired. I think I am done for now.. Glenn The Will Doug Smith is on his deathbed and knows the end is near. His nurse, his wife, his daughter and two sons are with him. So, he says to them: "Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses." "Sybil, you take the apartments over in the east end." "Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City Centre." "Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the river." The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Doug slips away, she says, "Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property". Sarah replies, "Property?... the asshole had a paper route!" [Ed. Note: Hope we didn t offend. It s just too funny!] 6
